Promoting Positive Behaviour

At Craigavon Senior High School, we recognise it is important that good behaviour, achievement and progress is acknowledged. The school has developed a rewards system that aims to encourage, promote and improve behaviour. This system is closely linked to the students’ ability to have access to certain school organised activities (e.g. trips, school formal).

Pupil achievements are recognised in a number of ways including assembly announcements, posts on social media and wider media outlets and in events such as Prize Day.

The school operates a system of achievement points to encourage good citizenship, hard work and continued positive behaviour. Pupils may earn points in line with individual departmental policies in a variety of ways, including:

Consistently improved standards of work

Good or outstanding pieces of work

Excellent effort in class or homework

Outstanding result in end of unit test / module

Polite, courteous or helpful behaviour Outstanding effort or achievement in extra curricular activities

Leadership

Achievement points are recorded on SIMS and will be used to reward students appropriately.

Sanctions

Behaviour points will be given in response to inappropriate behaviour. These points will be recorded on SIMS and monitored by Form Teachers, Heads of Year and SLT with sanctions given as appropriate. For minor level incidents sanctions may include a verbal reprimand, break/lunch time detention or extra work issued. For incidents which the school deem as medium level sanctions may include school detention, withdrawal of certain privileges, multiple lunch time detentions. Finally, for the rare occasions that major level incidents occur the school may sanction multiple detentions, internal suspension, external suspension or even expulsion.

Some Frequently Asked Questions By Students

What must I do if I have a dental or medical appointment during school hours? Non-emergency appointments should not be made during school hours. However, if you have to leave school for an appointment you must bring to school that morning a note from your parent or guardian. If permission is granted the Vice Principal/Senior Teacher will sign the note. Before you leave school take the note to the General Office where your name will be recorded in the Early Leave book. On return to school after your appointment you must sign in at the General Office. My mum wants me to leave school early so that I can go to Belfast with her. Will this be all right? No! We do not give permission for pupils to leave school early for reasons such as these. What do I do if I feel unwell in school? If you feel unwell you should tell your class teacher and be guided by what he or she says. The teacher may give you permission to go to the General Office where a member of staff will decide what action to take. Can I go home if I feel unwell in school? If a member of staff feels that you should go home the school will contact your parents. You may not go home without the permission of the school and the knowledge of your parents. You must never use a mobile phone to ask a parent to come and collect you without having first obtained the permission of a member of staff. My parents want to take me on holiday during term time. Will the teachers provide me with some extra work so that I don’t fall behind? You should not be going on holiday during term time. The law requires you to be in school and you will miss out on important teaching. Teachers will not supply you with extra work since the decision not to be in class is yours. What will happen if I arrive in school without proper uniform? A parent will be contacted and requested to bring in your full uniform. I have just had my eyebrow pierced and I need to wear a stud for two weeks to keep the hole open. May I cover it with a sticking plaster? No! Jewellery – you may wear small items of jewellery that the school agrees will not cause a health and safety risk. Piercings – you may wear one small, plain stud in the lobe of each ear and one small stud in the upper ear.

I dyed my hair at the weekend and it turned out a strange colour. What happens now? We do not allow pupils to come to school with hair dyed a colour that is not found naturally. You will be required to take appropriate measures to return your hair to a natural colour. Can I listen to my own music in class? No. If a teacher would like you to listen to music it will be played by the teacher through speakers. What happens if my parents want to come in to the school? If your parents wish to speak to your Form Teacher, Year Head, Senior Teacher, Vice Principal or Principal they should telephone the school to make an appointment. What should I do if I have a problem in school? You should speak to a teacher. If the problem is related to a particular subject speak to the subject teacher. Problems can also be taken to your Form Teacher, Year Head, Senior Teacher or to the Vice Principal. Always look for help if you are having problems. What should I do if I find or lose something? Items that are found should be handed in to the General Office so if you lose something you should ask at the office to see if it has been handed in. Make sure that your name is on all your belongings. Where are the ‘out of bounds’ areas? In general terms you are not allowed in those parts of the campus that are owned and used only by the Southern Regional College. Can I change an option subject? Each year a few pupils find that they do not like or cannot cope with a particular option subject. Provided that it is early in Year 11 you should take your request for a change to the Vice Principal/Senior Teacher. If your reasons for changing are good and if there are spaces in another suitable class, you may be able to change. However, we know from experience that only a few changes are possible each year. What should I do if I am unable to do PE? You must bring a note from your parent or guardian that explains why you cannot do PE. If the problem is a long term one you will need a note from your doctor.
