NEWSLETTER – No.1 – 5th February 2019

Dear Parents,

We welcome all members of our school community to the

beginning of the 2019 school year at OLA. We ask for God’s

blessings on the coming year: blessings of hope, trust,

compassion, openness, joy, understanding…..and rich learning for

all.

Thank you to staff and parents who have assisted in the happy beginning for our students. Within our school, we try to model God’s love for each one of us, by being a renewing community where all members are valued, affirmed and empowered; where our commitment to Gospel values is expressed in every facet of our school’s endeavours. “The Lord has told us what is good. What he requires of us is this:

to do what is just;

to show constant love;

and to live in humble fellowship with our God,” Micah 6:8

For this sentiment to continue throughout the year, it will require our collective wisdom and generosity of spirit to be at the forefront of all our communications.

Education today is a complex engagement because of the intensity and variety of external influences particularly through various forms of media and electronic communications. Our school has a special role in assisting every parent with the education of their children, so that all children will develop a sense of personal responsibility and learn the correct use of freedom.

“We come with

a listening

heart”

2019

In planning ahead each year, the school’s consultative process includes staff reflection on the best use/ practice of programs and resources. When we look to introduce new initiatives, it is challenging to maintain best practice across the whole curriculum. Each year our specialist programs may be adjusted accordingly. Whilst the specialist programs for 2019 remain the same as last year’s, timetables and resources have varied. When STEM was initially introduced as a fortnightly program, a new OLA P-6 Performing Arts program was developed for classroom teachers to use in terms 1, 2, and 3, and incursion presenters to be booked for weekly workshops in term 4. Since the successful introduction of STEM three years ago, it was agreed to further build resources and the program; thus in 2019, students will have weekly STEM lessons in the newly established Makerspace Room. This year, our beautiful school library will operate differently. Class teachers have completed workshops to update library lesson skills to take their class for at least one timetabled, fortnightly library lesson. Teachers with their classes, will continue to visit the library to further support learning in the classroom. The library will be staffed for three days, instead of last year’s four. As always, parent helpers for the library are invaluable. The size of today’s newsletter is witness to the exciting programs and activities planned for all at OLA this year. I encourage you to read, diarise, check the OLA School Information Folder on the website, and get involved…. whenever, and wherever possible. Yours sincerely,

Mrs Leonie Young Principal

EDUCATION IN FAITH

“We come with a

listening heart”

2019

Our theme for this year is “We come with a listening heart”. The theme is inspired by the Plenary Council which we will be looking at as a staff throughout the year. During the

Plenary Council we will be asked to consider the future of the Catholic Church. It will not only be a practice of sharing ideas but also one of listening to our peers. We ask God to

grace us with attentiveness and understanding.

For our greater community; our staff, our parents and students, we ask that we are open to listening to the word of God and the wonderings of others. May we learn from one another

and be inspired to live the message of Jesus.

God speaks in the silence of the heart.

Listening is the beginning of prayer.

Mother Teresa

Term 1 Catholic Social Teaching: Dignity of the Human Person This year we are changing the way we plan our Religious Education Curriculum. Looking across a two year cycle, we have allocated a Catholic Social Teaching to each term and also looked at creating two brand new units addressing traditions and scripture while also keeping in mind topics relevant to the world of our students. The Catholic Social Teaching ‘Dignity of the Human Person’ is the focus for Term 1. Each person is made in the image of God. As Christians we celebrate that God has created each person uniquely. We are joined together as a family and that God loves each of us equally. We experience God through our family and friends and The Church. This means we have to treat people with respect and fairness.

From this Catholic Social Teaching, we developed four fertile (or rich) questions to help direct our units. Each question is centred on the same concept but designed to fit the level of development of our students.

Fertile Questions:

Prep: What makes me special?

Junior: How should we treat each other?

Middle: What does dignity mean?

Senior: How is dignity upheld?

SCHOOL NOTICES:

EDUCATION IN FAITH

Throughout each term’s RE unit, there will be both teacher-led and student-led content. Teachers have planned half a term’s worth of work in order to cover the curriculum and key understandings. From these, the students own wonderings and interests will help scaffold the rest of the unit. For this reason, each class’s RE unit will be slightly different. We are very excited to be undertaking this new method of curriculum development and believe it will further engage and enhance the faith development of our students.

Date changes for your calendar:

Please be aware of the following changes to the 2019 RE dates:

Grade 4/5 Focus Masses have been changed from the long weekend. These will now be

on Saturday 15th June 6:30pm OR Sunday 16th June 11am.

Have a Ball Day has been added to the calendar – Friday 29th March.

Miss Caitlan Prosser Religious Education Leader

SCHOOL ACCOUNTS School Accounts were issued on Tuesday 29th January 2018. If you have not received your account, please check your email inbox, junk mail, spam or contact school office on 9584 9488 for a copy. Term 1 fees are due by the 22nd February 2019.

PARKING

For the safety and well being of all users, parents and family members are asked to observe the parking directions and restrictions in our car park area. The 2018 Handbook clearly outlines the procedures for parking within the school grounds and I encourage you to look over page 50 of this handbook to refresh your memories. The parking section of the handbook can be found here: http://bit.ly/OLAParking, as well as on the school website. I turn your attention to point number 1 in particular: “No Parking in Clearway – If you choose to stop in the ‘keep clear’ area, even for a short time, this lack of consideration for others can cause traffic congestion; place people and cars at risk, and generates some frustration for other motorists.” This includes blocking the driveway.

Car parking facility is available within the school grounds, BUT NECESSITATES THE CO-OPERATION AND PATIENCE OF ALL PEOPLE WHO USE THIS AREA. There are crossing supervisors on Centre Dandenong Road and Wilson street to ensure the ‘Part way is OK’ approach is safe for those who are happy to park/drop off in surrounding streets.

Please take care.

SCHOOL NOTICES:

SCHOOL CROSSINGS

Children must use the school crossings in Wilson Street and Centre Dandenong Road. Bikes are to be walked across the crossing and walked in front of school carpark to avoid accidents with pedestrians.

ABSENTEEISM Attendance at school is compulsory for all children over the age of six years. If your child is unable to attend school at any time during the year, you are asked to phone or email the school by 9.30am on the day of your child’s absence. When a child is absent from school, please email:

[email protected] (Please do not email absences to [email protected])

Please be reminded that it is important to include:

child’s name

child’s class

reason for absence

In the instance of contagious or serious illness please call on the day.

ALLERGY TO NUTS As we have a number of children and staff in the school community who are allergic to nuts and nut product the same procedures will be in place for 2019 to help prevent an allergic reaction. Parents are asked to be aware of which snacks contain nuts and avoid these where possible.

Parents have been informed by letter sent home if there is a student in their child’s class that has a LIFE THREATENING ALLERGY to NUTS. Our risk minimisation approach also includes asking parents of classmates to use alternatives to peanut butter and nutella on sandwiches and lunches and avoid sending raw nuts and muesli bars that contain nuts if a class member has a nut allergy. The OLA school community does not encourage children to share their food, food containers or utensils for this reason.

SCHOOL UNIFORM The school policy regarding the uniform is – that it is expected to be worn by all students. This includes neat hairstyles for boys and girls. The wearing of the uniform publicly states that they belong to Our Lady of the Assumption School. All students are expected to be correctly attired at all times, and we encourage children to wear their uniform with pride and ask that parents please support this policy. Please see uniform list in the OLA information folder, and if you have any queries, please discuss with class teacher or Mrs Leonie Young. I appreciate your co-operation in the past and look forward to it continuing.

Whole School Meditation

Starting from Monday 11th February, as a whole school we are going to trial running meditation each day of the week at 8.45am. Our Gr 6 Community leaders will be meeting with me this week to begin their training in leading whole school meditation for 2019. We strongly encourage students to be settled in their classrooms by 8.40am to commence at 8.45am and if any parents and friends are in the school at this time, that you stop and meditate with us. You are welcome to join with your child’s class, find a quiet spot on the yard, go into the parent room or front office. This will support our whole school approach to meditation and will not be disruptive to the process.
