Crime chronicle Issue #269 June 2008 “where a good crime can be had by all” Over the years, we have attempted a couple of big celebrations. The first was in 1990 when, along with the late Dulcie Stretton and the Fairmont Hotel, we held a lavish weekend party at the Fairmont in Leura to celebrate Agatha Christie’s Centenary. There was a formal dinner with a playlet put on by the Genesians, competitions and special displays of Agatha Christie titles, including many first editions, with an antique desk and 1920s typewriter. I had a photograph taken of me sitting at the desk, but I can’t seem to lay my hands on it now. The event certainly couldn’t have been achieved without the indefatigable Dulcie Stretton, who really put it all together. The weekend was a great success with over 100 people in attendance. The second Centenary we celebrated was for Dorothy L Sayers in 1993. The party was held in the shop, again organised with the help of Dulcie. This was not as lavish as the Christie Centenary, but a good time was had by all. Our special guests were Bunter (whose real name I can’t seem to recall) and Lord Peter Wimsey (Graham Keating, who was also the Sydney Town Crier). Dulcie was a wonderful friend and customer of Abbey’s. She organised our 25th Birthday Celebration, with authors at lunch and in the evening, running for two weeks. I am sure Eve will tell you more about these events in her reminiscences. - Peter ABBEY’S TURNS 40 : A Continuing Retrospective: Part 6 Dulcie, Bunter, Lord Peter & myself at Dorothy L Sayers Centenary BEST NOVEL Down River by John Hart (Tp $33.00) BEST FIRST NOVEL (by an American author) In the Woods by Tana French (Pb $20.00) BEST PAPERBACK ORIGINAL Queenpin by Megan Abbott (Tp $25.95) BEST FACT CRIME Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F Kennedy by Vincent Bugliosi (Hb $95.00).
