Although a formal announcement will be made later in the week, the Island Clippings has been advised by Sault Area Hospital officials that a series of ‘Public Engage- ment’ meetings will take place next week, presented by Sault Area Hospital, the Blind River District Health Centre and the North East Local Health Integration Network (NE LHIN) for residents of the areas served by the Matthews Memorial, Thes- salon and Blind River hospitals. The purpose of the meetings is to provide an update on the progress made on the much- anticipated Tri-community ‘Hospital Partnership’ aimed at developing new solutions for delivering health care in a rural environment. The meeting for the Matthews Memorial Hospital catchment area will be on Tuesday, October 9th at the Royal Canadian Legion in Richards Landing, starting at 7 pm, followed by meetings in Thessalon and Blind River on Wednesday, October 10th and Thursday, October 11th respec- tively. Currently, the Matthews Memorial and Thessalon hospital sites fall under the auspices of the Sault Area Hospital, and are administra- tively treated as “floors” of the SAH. Under consideration since October 2010, a ‘Rural Hospital Partnership’ would separate the Matthews Memorial and Thessalon facilities from Sault Area Hospital and partner them with Blind River, sharing common management, administration and resources to provide more ‘rural focused’ healthcare. The ‘Rural Hospital Partnership’ concept was first publicly announced as being under consideration back in October 2010 by then-LHIN Chair Peter Vaudry on a visit to St. Joseph Island. His comments were reported in Issue # 770 (October 21, 2010) of the Island Clippings, which can be viewed by visiting our website, www.islandclippings.com and clicking on ‘Archives.’ Peter confirmed that Elaine Pitcher, Chair of the SAH Board of Directors (and appointed Chair of the North East LHIN last August) had confirmed that they “just don’t get” rural health care and they support the LHIN’s seeking other alterna- tives for ensuring quality medical care outside of the Soo’s City Limits. The news was met with wild enthusiasm at the time, since it

assured that Matthews Memorial Hospital would NOT be

closed, as was widely feared. In fact, its role in delivering

health care in our community could well be increased.

As Peter then described it, MMH would no longer be ‘tied’ to

the Sault Area Hospital, but rather would be one of three

‘partner’ facilities, all oriented towards delivering quality

health care to a re-defined rural catchment area that would

stretch from the Soo City Limits to Spanish. The area was

tentatively named ‘Lake Huron North Shore Algoma, and

would include the Garden River First Nations and the unor-

ganized territory to the north.

The three hospitals would share facilities and resources, with

more complex cases and surgeries still being referred to the

larger Sault or Sudbury hospitals.

It seems that not much has happened since, at least

outwardly to those not directly involved. Initial ‘governance’

discussions amongst the parties involved appeared to stall

over matters such as the ratio of representation on the Board

of Directors, or even who would sit at the table to discuss

such issues. Many feared that the promising ‘partnership’ had

gone dormant, or had even died completely.

Perhaps it won’t be a ‘partnership’ at all. It appears that the

Matthews Memorial Hospital Association Board of Directors

has been excluded from the organizational discussions to

date. Representatives of the MMHA Board chose not to

comment at this time, awaiting more accurate, detailed

information. Perhaps they too will have to wait for Tuesday

night to find out what’s in store for our small rural hospitals.

So plan to attend one of these important meetings yourself!

After all, it’s YOUR health care that they’ll be talking about!

The MMHA Board of Directors does not have the authority to unilaterally change anyof the association’s bylaws. It must first present its proposed amendments to thegeneral membership and the membership must vote to approve the change.

So if you’re a member of the Association, be sure to attend and have your say. You’renot a member? You can be! You too can attend the meeting and join the associationright then and there. Perhaps now more than ever, the Matthews Memorial HospitalAssociation needs a strong, participating membership base.

And based on what might be happening with the ‘Rural Hospital Partnership’ featuredin our cover story, we’re sure that we’ll have lots to talk about!

jump hair etc. He served his time andwas released. He took his ant with himin a matchbox. The first place he wentwas to a bar. He sat down, took out thematchbox and emptied out the ant. Hethen said to the guy beside him, “You’renot gonna believe what this ant can do”.

He showed him all the tricks and theguy was impressed and told him that hecould make a fortune with the ant. Theguy with the ant was excited and calledthe bartender over and said “You see

that ant?” The bartender put his fingeron the ant, twisted it and said,

“Sorry sir it won’t happen again.”

“The Lemon Secret”Don’tWaste That Lemon Peel!MANY PROFESSIONALS in restaurants and eateries use theentire lemon and nothing is wasted. How can you use thewhole lemon without waste? Simple!

Place the lemon in the freezer section of your refrigerator.Once the lemon is frozen, get your grater, and shred thewhole lemon (no need to peel it) and sprinkle it on top ofyour foods.

Sprinkle it on your whiskey, wine, vegetable salad, ice cream, soup, noodles, spaghetti sauce, rice, sushi, fish dishes. OPPWarns of ‘Distraction Thefts’ and Jewellery FraudONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE (OPP) remind the public and retail store ownersto always ensure their personal safety and prevent becoming victims of theft andfraud.

There have been numerous complaints of distraction thefts in retail outlets and fraud-ulent or ‘black market’ street-level sales of merchandise, including jewellery, in severalareas of Ontario in recent weeks. These incidents are not isolated.

The suspects travel in groups using rented vehicles and are identifiable by the distinc-tive types and styles of clothing they wear which also assist with their crimes.

Some victims have been defrauded for amounts ranging from a few hundred to up tofive-thousand dollars ($5,000). At a retail shopping check-out, a victim may use theirdebit card while the suspects are behind the victim to memorize the PIN number.Once outside, the victim is deliberately distracted while another suspect steals theirwallet.

In other retail locations, while astore employee is distracted by asuspect, another female suspect willhide items in pockets under a long, flowing skirt - so-called “booster”skirts - before exiting the store.

In incidents involving street-levelsales, a suspect approaches a victimand offers them gold jewellery inmemory of a dead relative, or as agift. The suspect placesthe necklace on thevictim, while removingthe victim’s own goldnecklace.

In other instances, oneor more suspectsapproach a victimclaiming they have arelative in need, andoffer expensive-lookingjewellery in exchangefor money to help. Thevictim later discoversthe jewellery is worth-less.

OPP remind storeemployees and commu-nity members to beaware of these incidents.

If this type of groupenters a store or if youhave been approachedby someone wanting tosell jewellery or othervaluables, call police orCrime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
