Honouring Freighters ... continued from page 1

Passenger and packet service initially carried settlers, mail, and supplies to new communities being established alongthe upper reaches of the Great Lakes, above the naturalobstacle to shipping posed by Niagara Falls. As agricultural, fishing, lumbering and mining industries grew, dozens ofsmall navigation companies operated to supply them. Fordecades, passenger and packet freighters were virtually theonly source of transportation for goods and people to andfrom isolated Upper Great Lakes coastal communities.

While in operation, they were integral components ofCanada’s earliest transcontinental transportation systems, complementing rail service in moving settlers and suppliesto the west and bringing western grain to the east.

Great Lakes steamers gradually evolved into their owndistinctive design, specially suited for service at thenumerous, and generally small ports of the upper lakes. From 150-300 ft. long with a shallow draft, these steel hulledboats had cabins for up to 1,000 passengers, and side-loading freight ports for moving hundreds of tons of cargo. Most were built in local shipyards on the upper lakes, espe-cially at Georgian Bay.

Eventually however, by the late 1960’s Norgoma and herfellow steamers could no longer compete with the now-

New Steeple Dedicated at St. John’s AnglicanChurch, Hilton Beach

By Pat Brown

IN MAY 2002, the Anglican parish on the island had St. John’s Anglican Church inHilton Beach moved from its location next to the Hilton Community Hall “up thehill” to its original home in the Anglican cemetery. As part of that move, the steeplehad to be removed. It was discovered that the steeple was deteriorating and notsound enough to be re-installed on the church. The search to find someone to builda new steeple began.

Over the intervening 9 ½ years, several people offered to take on the project but forone reason or another (all of them valid) it was never built. Finally, Bucky Garsidewas approached and he agreed to build a new one. Besides being a first ratecarpenter he has members of his family, including his mother Lucy Garside, buriedin St. John’s cemetery.

As part of the design process, Bucky consulted long-time member of the congrega-tion, Alice Trainor. Alice approved of Bucky’s design and the project got underway.Sadly, Alice passed away before the project was completed but her family asked thatmemorial gifts to St. John’s in Alice’s memory be used to help pay for the newsteeple.

Finally on September 7th, the new steeplewas put in place. This past Sunday morningmembers of the Trainor and Garside familiesjoined the congregation at St. John’s for aservice to dedicate the steeple to the memo-ries of Lucy Garside and Alice Trainor. Aspart of the dedication, members of bothfamilies rang the reinstalled bell.

The members of the parish are very gratefulto Bucky for a wonderful new steeple thatlooks like it has been there forever, and sopleased that the project to bring St. John’ssteeple home is finally complete.

Well I cannot believe the season is over and this is my finalmoment. We have had a very busy summer, getting a lot ofrepairs done. The students were busy beavers this year. Theylandscaped, cleared the hiking trail, built a retainer wallaround the dinosaur pit, installed weather stripping, chalkedall the holes, built a ramp to the Church, built a stand for theboat, painted the Church porch, painted the barn stairs, andpainted the flower containers. This was in addition to therunning day camp, regular treating of artifacts, cleaning, accessioning, mowing lawns, weed whacking, conductiontours, and assisting with the advertising, promotion andfund raising.

We are also getting the brick work and cracks repaired on theI Line School, the chinking in the Log House and the flashingon the Log School done this fall.

Island InsightAS VISITORS TO YOUR BEAUTIFUL ISLAND we weredelighted to be able to attend the benefit concert on Saturdayfor your hospital fund. The evening was superb. We enjoyed alovely meal; our congratulations to the volunteers whoprepared it all.

The entertainment was great. The ladies were superb eventhough they were not 100% fit. In fact, we both stated that ifthey were so good when ill we would love to see them whenthey are completely well! However, we must comment on therudeness of the people in the table just behind ours (we werein the middle at the front table). They showed no respect foreither the artists or the people around them, but talked noisilyall the way through the entertainment. At one stage they hadto be told just how rudely they were acting.

Whilst here we have found the people extremely friendly andaccommodating so we know full well that the abovementioned were the exception to the rule. To the people of St.Joe’s we say thank you for a wonderful stay and to these otherswe say show a little respect for your neighbours and think alittle less of yourselves.

From the St. Joseph Township Heritage Committee …

Vandalism hurts everyone!OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, the Committee has put a lotof effort and personal time into restoring the “Old Jail” inRichards Landing, for tourists to view, enjoy and maybe takea picture or two.

Unfortunately, vandalism by a few of our local youth (youknow who you are) has escalated this year. We have asked theTownship to close the “Old Jail” earlier this year, so we canassess the cost of repairing, monitoring and securing thisvaluable Historical Site.

Working together, The St. Joseph Township HeritageCommittee and The Township of St. Joseph have completedthe work to open the “Ray of Light Lighthouse,” but therecurring vandalism has made us hesitant to move forward tothe next phase of displaying Historic Artifacts and Maps.

Should you witness vandalism at our tourist attractions, please notify the Township or a member of Council immedi-ately. Your tax dollars go into the restoration of these heritagesites, as well as into repairing them, when damaged by sense-less vandalism.
