Eleanor Adcock Turns 90By Randal Adcock

ON NOVEMBER 27TH Eleanor(Garside) Adcock will turn 90. Overher many years, her interests inwriting, gardening, history, andcommunity service have come togetherin many ways to make a difference inour local quality of life.

Writing has been a common threadand ongoing passion for Eleanor.Starting as a teenager, she expressedher romance with nature in her veryCanadian poetry. Many peopleremember her articles in The IslandClippings and North Shore Sentinel. While her news column on localpeople and events helped create a senseof shared authentic community, her articles to preserve local history eventuallybecame My Little Book of St. Joseph Island Stories.

When Eleanor married Russell Adcock in 1946, she joined him in a marketgardening business. Together they supplied consumers in the Sault with fresh St JoeIsland garden produce such as corn, beans, and squash. That continued on a parttime basis while living in the Sault from 1956 through the ‘60s. Eleanor earned herMaster Gardener designation through correspondence studies at University ofGuelph, and shared that knowledge repeatedly at the Horticultural Society and withvisitors at Adcock’s Woodland Gardens.

Beginning in 1985 Eleanor worked with Russell and her son Grant to design andbuild Adcock’s Woodland Gardens. She played an important role particularly inplanning and designing the gardens and selecting plants. Every year over 2,000people from Algoma and abroad visit the Gardens enjoying a few moments awayfrom a hectic world. In private, she still keeps her own vegetable garden for thetable.

Eleanor’s community service began as a schoolgirl helping out at fall fairs and as ayoung woman with the Women’s Institute. Beginning in 1943 she joined the wareffort by serving in the RCAF -WD (Women’s Division) at Rockcliffe ManningDepot. She served as a nursing aid to 1946, usually drawing blood samples fromreturning troops at the women’s RCAF hospital. For this she earned the rank ofCorporal.

Through the years she volunteered countless hours and donated baked goods toraise funds for organizations such as United Church Women, Mathews Memorial

Hospital, Island Museum and the Harvest Festival. She sharedher knowledge of history with the Historical Society. She alsofound time while raising her family to volunteer at the Sault’scrisis prevention phone line.

Eleanor worked with the Chamber of Commerce as an advo-cate for tourism and economic development and in manyways helped raise the public profile of Old Fort St. Joseph. Shehas also been outspoken on the improvement of logging andforestry practices and other issues.

Over the years Eleanor has given freely to the community, even while raising five boys. Her writings on local history, herlandscaped gardens and volunteer work have helped make StJoseph Island a warmer, more inviting place. And yes, kids, shereally did walk three miles to school, sometimes barefoot insummer and sometimes through darkness, howling wolvesand two feet of snow!

On Sunday, November 27th friends and family are invited toEleanor’s 90th birthday party at the Legion Hall at RichardsLanding, from 2 pm to 5 pm. There will be a Come-and-Gotea with a special event at 3 pm for half an hour. Best wishesonly.

Editor’s Note: Eleanor, we’re happy to join your family, friendsand admirers in wishing you a very Happy Birthday, and many, many more of them! You are indeed one of the Island’s greattreasures!

“Adopt a Highway”

Since St. Joseph Island has a tourist based economy, perhapswe should all consider adopting the above program. Myfriend Elsie Turner and I have just finished picking up thegarbage, cans and bottles from half of Canoe Pointe road - wepicked up 3 large (33 gallon) bags – and this was the secondtime this year we did this.

The City Boy

I just had to write and say how much I enjoyed reading about“installing the dishwasher”! It was a tremendous effort andyou have a way with a story! Could be that it was ‘embell-ished’ a little to make a good story, but it was entertainingand I had a good laugh!

I live at Collegiate Heights, but lived in Richards Landingfrom 1998 to 2004, and I like to keep in touch with the Islandand its happenings. I am also still affiliated with the medicalfacilities there.

I pass on ‘The Clippings’ to a former resident of HiltonBeach, and she maybe passes it on again. She wouldn’t get herown copy, so I’m not taking a customer from you! I knowwhat I pay each year only pays for the postage, but it’s worthit!

Please keep on with your stories. “The Clippings” is a pleasureto read.

Sincerely, Pat MorganMail Subscriber, Sault Ste. Marie

Thanks so much Pat! Actually, there wasn’t really that much‘embellishment’ to the story. The City Boy really IS that stupid!Nonetheless, we’re always happy to hear that people do enjoythe Island’s little newspaper that just keeps on growing. And byall means, keep sharing the Clippings! We’ll save paper ... andmore than a few trees!

WELL, FOLKS, IF YOU’RE READING THIS, the scientists were right.

As predicted, Asteroid 2005 YU 55 passed within 323,469 kilometers (201,000 miles)of the earth early Tuesday evening.

“It is the first time since 1976 that an object of this size has passed this closely to theEarth. It gives us a great — and rare — chance to study a near-Earth object like this,”said astronomer Scott Fisher, a program director with the National Science Founda-tion, during a Web chat with reporters.

The orbit and position of the asteroid, which is about 1,312 feet (400 meters) indiameter, is well known, added senior research scientist Don Yeomans, with NASA’sJet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Scientists suspect YU 55 has been visiting Earth for thousands of years, but becausegravitational tugs from the planets occasionally tweak its path, they cannot tell forsure how long the asteroid has been in its present orbit.

Computer models showing the asteroid’s path for the next 100 years show there is nochance it will hit Earth during that time, added Yeomans. “We do not think that itwill ever impact the Earth or moon (but) we only have its orbit calculated for thenext 100 years,” he said.

NASA is working on a mission to return soil samples from an asteroid known as1999 RQ36 in 2020, followed by a human mission to another asteroid in the mid-2020s. Japan also plans to launch an asteroid sample return mission in 2018.

This November, be the somebodywho saves a life!

IF YOU WITNESSED A FAMILY MEMBER in cardiac arrest, would you know what to do?

November is CPRMonth and theCanadian Red Crosschallenges everyoneto get the trainingthey need to helpsave a life. Effectivebystander CPR,when used inconjunction with anAED and adminis-tered immediatelyfollowing cardiacarrest, can double a person’s chance of survival.

“Knowing how to help a person suffering from cardiac arrestcan mean the difference between full recovery and perma-nent disability or even death,” says Don Marentette, managerof national first aid programs for the Canadian Red Cross.“CPR training teaches people how to recognize signs andsymptoms of cardiovascular emergencies and how torespond quickly and effectively.”

Red Cross CPR courses also include training on the use ofautomated external defibrillators (AEDs): how to assess aperson in cardiac arrest, determine whether defibrillation (ashock to the heart to restore normal beating) should beperformed, and use an AED unit to deliver a shock ifrequired. The Red Cross is the only national training agencyto include AED training as a mandatory component in alltheir programs.

Polling conducted last year by the American Red Crossrevealed that 25 per cent of respondents had been in a situa-tion where someone may have needed CPR, but only 66 percent of those were confident they could help someone whoneeded it.

“Training not only gives you the knowledge and skills torespond, but also the confidence to act,” says Marentette.

The Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED program wasupdated in 2011 to meet the latest international scientificevidence on first aid and CPR released in 2010.

“Seventy per cent of cardiac arrests happen at home, yet onlyone in seven people know how to perform CPR,” says Don.“Knowing these simple techniques could mean the differ-ence between life and death for someone you love.”
