This is one of those
special weekends in Ham-tramck.
First up:Those rascals at Public
Pool are at it again.Providing a viewing
space to the odd and per-haps profane paintings byway-outsider artist Thelo-nius Bone, they have to-gether combined tomount a show called
“Stoned and Alien.”In fact, Bone (Mr.
Bone??) refers to himselfas a “burnout-sider”artist. Get it?
If not, hit it.One of his previous
shows played off hisstated job as a local bar-keep, and was titled “Al-coholics Anonymous,”immortalizing otherwisenameless drinking pa-trons in slathered acrylic.
There’s an opening re-ception for (Mr.) Bone atthe Public Pool space (lo-
cated at 3309 Caniff, justeast of Gallagher on thenorth side of the street)this Saturday night, Nov.9, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
His work will then con-tinue to be on displaythrough Dec. 14.
So shock your kith andkin with a Xmas gift theyprobably won’t forget, andmay not forgive either, and help a no-doubt starv-ing or hungry or at least alittle bit peckish artist, why don’t ya?

And for the second elec-tion in a row, since the Au-gust Primary Election, anincumbent councilmember,Saad Almasmari, wasknocked out the race.
In the August primary,Councilmembers Anam

Here are the results ofTuesday’s election.

This Monday (Nov. 11)is extra special.
It is Veterans Day.As usual, PLAV Post 10
(11824 Jos. Campau.)will hold a ceremony.
Folks will start gather-ing at 10:30 a.m. and atoast will take place at11 a.m., sharp. Ham-tramck’s group of veter-ans has been decreasingeach year as some passon.
There will be food, music and singing. It’s afun time, and it’s also achance to say “thanks”to our local vets. Stop byand say hello, and raisea glass.
As usual, banks andgovernment offices willbe closed on Monday. That also means no mailwill be delivered.
Our country’s first pres-ident, George Washing-ton, had this to say aboutveterans:
“The willingness withwhich our young peopleare likely to serve in anywar, no matter how justi-fied, shall be directly pro-portional to how theyperceive the veterans ofearlier wars were treated

Nayeem Choudhury is one of three new city coun-cilmembers elected on Tuesday. One of the newlyelected, Mohamed Hassan, is a former councilmember.
See you there.Also this Saturday,
there will be a tribute tothose poor souls whowent down on the Ed-mund Fitzgerald in LakeSuperior on Nov. 10,1975.
The entire crew of 29were lost in the tragedy. The Fitzgerald was thelargest ship working theGreat Lakes at the time, and the largest ship inrecorded history to belost on the Great Lakes.
So, on Saturday, from 2to 5 p.m., the folks atBank Suey will host a freefolk concert tribute withLee Murdock.
According to a press re-lease about the event,Murdock “has uncovereda boundless body ofmusic and stories in theGreat Lakes region.
“Lee's timeless GreatLakes songs are made ofhard working, hard-living,ships that go down andships that come in. Themusic is grounded in thework-song tradition, fromthe rugged days of lum-berjacks, wooden sailingschooners, and revelry inthe grand folk style.”
Also on stage that af-ternoon is poet CindyHunter Morgan, who willbe reading from her po-etry collection “Harbor-less” (WSU Press).
And, once again we’ll goto the press releaseabout the event.
“Harborless’ is a collec-tion of poems informedby Great Lakes ship-wrecks -- part history andpart reinvention.
“The poems exploretragic wrecks in riversand lakes, finding andforming artistic meaningfrom destruction anddeath.
“Each poem begins in areal, historical moment
that Cindy Hunter Morgantransforms into an imag-ined truth. The imagina-tive element is essentialto this work, as it pro-vides a previously unseenglimpse into the lives af-fected by shipwrecks.
“The poems in ‘Harbor-
less’ confront the myster-
ies surrounding the ob-jects that cover the floorof the Great Lakes, byboth deepening our un-derstanding of the un-known and teaching greatempathy for a life most ofus will never know.”
Bank Suey is located atthe southwest corner ofJos. Campau and Caniff.
This is an all-agesevent.
police officers wereswarming the city in re-sponse to reports of theincidents.
“An officer saw a vehi-cle, a white Jeep, match-ing the suspect vehicledescription in the area,”
said Police Chief AnneMoise. “As the officer at-tempted to stop the vehi-cle, the suspects fled, butwere captured after ashort pursuit.”
The arrest of the foursuspects happened with-out further incident.
Moise said two of thesuspects are 17 yearsold, and are from Detroit.A 19-year-old suspect isfrom Farmington Hills anda fourth is a juvenile fromEastpointe.
The three adult sus-pects are charged witharmed robbery and usinga weapon in the commis-sion of a felony for one ofthe robberies.
Two of those suspectsare also charged in a sec-ond robbery. The juvenilehas not yet been charged.Police are still completingtheir investigation.
Bond for the adults wasset at $1 million cash.
Chief Moise declined toidentify the suspects. TheReview has submitted aFreedom of InformationAct request to get thenames, but as of Thurs-day, when The Reviewwent to print, there hadbeen no response.

These clinics are put onto help folks with some of
the more common med-ical issues, addressingchronic conditions (includ-ing diabetes); screeningfor blood pressure; check-ing on the management ofmedications and nutritionalike, and discussing easyways to increase yourphysical activity.

Robert Zwolak … 813The city council race was
the only ballot issue forHamtramck voters.
At 4 p.m. on election day,Councilmember Almas-mari, who was in his firstterm, looked glum stand-ing outside the pollingprecincts located at theHamtramck High SchoolCommunity Center.
He called out Chowd-hury, Hassan and Alsomirifor focusing on absenteeballot voters.
“That’s not what a politi-cian should do,” he said. “Iwent and talked with vot-ers.”
He said those who relyon absentee voters are“snakes.”
Chowdhury received themost absentee ballots at643, with Hassan getting638 and Alsomiri getting533.
Almasmari received 334absentee ballots, Lasleygot 329 and Zwolak re-ceived 325.
There is nothing illegal inencouraging voters to voteby absentee ballot. In fact, the state recently made iteasier for people to vote by
this method to encouragemore folks to vote.
Turnout for the electionwas low, as expected con-sidering the city councilrace was the only item onthe ballot. Some 2,810, or22 percent, people voted, out of a total of 12,383registered voters.
City Clerk AugustGitschlag said there wereno incidents to report onelection day.
“It was boring,” he saidabout the day.
The state election lawalso allowed people to reg-ister and vote on electionday. About 25 people tookadvantage of that, register-ing on Tuesday and thenvoting.
The new councilmem-bers’ four-year terms startthis Jan. 1 when they willjoin incumbents Ian Per-rotta, Andrea Karpinskiand Fadel Al-Marsoumi.
They, and Mayor KarenMajewski, will be up for re-election in two years.

In Our Opinion
Last week we re-ported some goodnews/bad news aboutthe GM Poletown plant.
The good: The plantwill remain open.
The bad: It will beshut down for as longas two years, to retoolthe plant for the produc-tion of electric-poweredpickup trucks.
That’s bad news forHamtramck because, during that time, the citywon’t receive the ap-proximately $700,000to $800,000 a year GMpays to Hamtramck inlieu of property taxes.
That is a huge chunkof change for the city,
and it will be quite a hitto the city budget.
Worse, the yearly-pay-ment-in- l ieu-of-taxesdeal with GM dependson how many employ-ees are working at theplant. It is believed thatthe workforce will shrinkwhen the Poletownplant resumes opera-tion – meaning the citywon’t be getting$800,000 a year evenwhen production re-sumes.
We stress this againbecause there will beadjustments to the citybudget. Those cost-sav-ing cuts will likely upsetsome folks.
There really aren’t anygood options.
More disturbingly, wehave heard some candi-dates for city councilvow to cut taxes – par-ticularly the city incometax.
This is naïve at best, and at worst, outrightreckless. These folksclearly do not under-stand how the city oper-ates.
We are hoping thoseclaims were empty cam-paign promises made towin votes. Otherwise, the city will be headingtoward an even moreserious financial blow.
Poletown closing comes witha stiff financial setback for city
