Berlin - Political and Cultural Centre of Germany

Since the fall of the Iron Curtain and the end of division by the Berlin Wall, the city has experienced architectural and cultural regeneration and enhancement, redefining Berlin as a world city in the 21st century, without turning its back on its turbulent history. The steel and glass cupola of the Reichstag and the postmodern shopping centres reflect the opulent historical build-ings of the imperial era alongside the monuments and memori-als.

Over 150 concert halls and theatres, three opera houses and around 200 museums and art collections as well as some of the world’s liveliest nightlife, including the Berghain, all vie for the attention of over 10 million visitors a year. The relatively new Berlinale now rivals the established European film festivals in Venice and Cannes. Contemporary art has found its new home in the galleries and ateliers of Auguststraße and at the Berliner Biennale. Meanwhile, music lovers are spoilt for choice by some of the best symphony orchestras and choirs in the world.

There are also some memorable nights out to be had, as Berlin’s diverse nightlife never sleeps; moreover, the city on the Spree is the only German city to hold the Long Night of the Museums twice a year - and the famous Museum Island has even been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

By day, the German capital is a city of science par excellence. Its 31 universities and institutes of higher education attract greater numbers of students than those in any other federal state, with around 160,000 students registered here in the winter semester 2012/2013. The renowned Humboldt Univer-sity (founded 1810/11) and the Freie Universität Berlin, which achieved special merit for its ‘International Network University’ future strategy concept, were both recognised as elite German universities for the third time in succession within the framework of the Excellence Initiative. The Berliner Charité is the largest medical faculty in Europe. The Berlin State Library, which holds over 10 million printed volumes, is the largest scientific universal library in the German-speaking world.

Berlin is the second largest yet also the greenest city in the European Union. Approximately 420,000 trees, 29,000 hec-tares of urban woodland, countless parks and public gardens - such as the Berlin Zoological Garden and the Botanical Garden - all sustain the unrivalled and famed ‘Berlin air’.

The two airports, Tempelhof and Berlin-Schönefeld, provide convenient international connections to the city, as do the numerous long-distance bus routes that regularly cross into other European countries.

Berlin is the largest and by far the most enthralling city in Germany.

F+U Academy of LanguagesLanguage Courses at F+UThe F+U Group of Companies is one of the largest private education providers in Germany. It has centres throughout the Federal Republic as well as in other European countries and cooperates with state and private education providers all over the world. In the capital city of Berlin, F+U specialises in professional and continu-ing further education, as well as in commercial retraining and qualifica-tions. Over several years, the successful model of the dual bachelor degree programme at the International University of Cooperative Education (Internationale Berufsakademie - IBA) as well as the latest distance, full-time and dual master’s programmes at the University of Applied Sciences for Business, Technology and Culture (Hochschule für Wirtschaft, Technik und Kultur - HWTK) have offered young people training opportunities with a practical and international orientation.

Since 2002, language teaching in Berlin has focused on company training. As of 2013, the newly founded F+U Academy Of Languages Berlin complements and expands our teaching to include customised language and computer courses tailored to international standards. This continues the tradition first begun in 1980 in the romantic Neckar city of Heidelberg. The parent of all F+U language schools, the Academy Of Languages Heidelberg teaches around 9,000 learners from over 100 countries every year and is one of the largest and most successful language schools in Germany. Additional schools in Tenerife and Darm-stadt have extended the scope of the courses, also geographically.

All of our language learners in Berlin - whether international students seeking to raise the standard of their German in readiness for higher education, or local people aiming to improve their foreign language skills, for example in Business English - can profit from this innovative network of teaching experience and educational competence.
