ABOUT our cover:

The surname BAIRD is originally from the south of France, but the first mention of the name in Britain came with William the Conqueror. There is reason to believe that some of our name came to Scotland in 1174 when King William the Lion returned from his captivity in England Early spellings are: BARD, BARDE, BYRD, BEARD, etc.

An old tradition in the family records is that William the Lion, while hunting in one of the southwest counties happened to wander from his attendants and was alarmed by the appearance of a wild

Boar,

and calling for assistance a gentleman by the name of BAIRD, who had followed the King, came up and had the good fortune to slay the object of the King's alarm. For this signal service, William conferred upon his deliverer large grant of land and assigned him, for his Coat-of-Arms, "A Boar Passant" and for his motto "Dominous Fecit"- which arms are to be seen upon the ancient monuments of the BAIRDs of Auchmedeen in the church yard of Banff.

Some mottoes on our Coat-of-Arms are: "Vi et Virtute" meaning, live with virtue/honor. "And, Dominus Fecit" meaning, God hath made, Wear it well... .

The genealogy of the BAIRDs begins with the religious persecutions of King James and the Test Act of 1681 against Presbyterians by Charles II of England BAIRDs are an integral part of the history of Scotland, North Ireland, France, the Presbyterian Church, and our own American Revolution. Many of our name gave up their lives, their fortunes, their homes, to follow valiant if not always winning causes. Some were political followers of "Bonnie Prince Charlie," and others, for the sake of their religion, were forced to leave their native Scotland

Baird's History of Clark County. Indiana:

By Captain Lewis C. BAIRD, President of the Clark County Historical Society. Published by B. F. Bowen & Company, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1909.

Page 505: BEARD, James H. This wellknown business man is a native of Gallatin county, Kentucky, where his birth occurred in the year 1845. His father, John BEARD, a native of Butler county, Pennsylvania, was of Dutch extraction and his mother, also born and reared in the same county and state, bore the maiden name of Emily J. MORRIS and was of Irish descent. These parents moved to Kentucky a number of years ago and settled in Gallatin county, where Mr. BEARD resided until his removal to Jeffersonville, in 1892, dying in the city four years later, Mrs. BEARD having departed this l i fe some time previously in Madison, Jefferson county, Indiana.

and best known organizations of the kind in the southern part of the state, also one of the most successful, being capitalized at one million dollars and conducted by some of the most reliable business men of the city. In connection with the secretaryship he also deals extensively in real estate and insurance, in both of which lines he has built up a large and continually growing patronage, his business comparing favorably with that of any other man or firm in the city similarly engaged.

Mr. BEARD was married in Gallatin county, Kentucky, in the year 1867, to Diana E. SATCHVILL, daughter of Joseph and Anna SATCHVILL, natives of that county, the union being blessed with two children, John T. and Emma D., the former an engineer in the city of Louisvi l le, the latter the wife of Charles BANKS, a soldier in the Spanish-American war, at the end of which he was given a position in the government work on the Panama Canal. Mr. BEARD has been active in public affairs since becoming a cit izen of Jeffersonvil le and is deeply interested in whatever tends to the material advancement of the city and the social and moral good of the populace. Previous to his removal to Jeffersonvi l le he served for a number of years as a Justice of the Peace at Markland and earned the reputation of an able public servant. He takes an active interest in secret benevolent work and belongs to a number of fraternal orders, including Clark Lodge, No. 40, Free and Accepted Masons, Horeb Chapter, No. 66, Royal Arch Masons, Jeffersonvi l le Commandery, Jeffersonville Chapter, No. 327, Order of Easter Star. He is also identified with Clark Assembly, No. 43, Union Fraternal League. In religion he subscribes to the plain simple teachings of the Christian church, and in politics supports the principles of the Democratic party.

James H. BEARD grew to maturity in his native county and state, received his education in the public schools and later fitted himself for a bus iness career by tak ing a course in a commercial school in Cincinnati. He remained in Gallatin county until 1868, when by reason of an injury he gave up farming and removed to Markland, Switzerland county, Indiana, and engaged in the mercantile business, which he conducted in that town for a period of fourteen years . At the exp i rat ion of that t ime he disposed of his stock and moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where he accepted a position with a wholesale grocery house, subsequently severing his connection with the firm to enter the employ of the Adams Express Company. In 1892 he resigned his position with the company and changed his residence to Jeffersonville, Indiana, where he has since been engaged in various enterprises, devoting the greater part of the time to his duties as secretary of the Falls City Savings and Loan Association, one of the oldest

William T. BAIRD, No man in Kirksville takes higher rand than he whose name heads this sketch; no one is more public-spirited or has done more to advance the educational interest of this community than he. He has been wise in not waiting to have his executors erect a monument to his memory, for in life he has carried out his own plans and has endowed a chair in the Missouri Valley College. His generosity is a matter of comment, and his fixedness of purpose and strict integrity of character have won for h im the love and admiration of his fellows. He has served in many local offices, having been a member of the School Board, Treasurer of the State Normal School for twenty-three years, was Acting County Treasurer for four years, and a helper of the American Sunday School Union (through Rev. George W. SHARP, ifs Missionary for Northern Missouri) in the great work of evangelizing the people, especially the children and youth, in the outlying districts, thus perfecting the happy relations formed with Mr. SHARP, who was his first pastor. During the seven years of his pastorate, peace, growth and prosper i ty attended the church. Mr. BAIRD acknowledges his lasting gratitude and thanks to him for leading him into the activities of the Christian life and usefulness in the Master's service. Of Mr. BAIRD's numerous private benefactions we are not permitted to speak; the day of the Lord will reveal them.

Mr. BAIRD was born in Carroll County, KY, January 19, 1835, and is the son of Barzilla Adams and Mary M. (SCANLAND) BAIRD. The former, a native of Paris, KY, born November 4, 1803, was a farmer and son of one Thomas BAIRD, o f N o r t h C a r o l i n a . T h e f a t h e r of Thomas was a native of Scotland and in company with six brothers emigrated to the

U n i t e d S t a t e s p r i o r t o t h e W a r o f t h e Revolution, and all settled in different parts of the country. They were agr icu l tur is ts by occupation and took their share of service in the early wars of their adopted land. Our subject's g r and fa the r was a he ro o f t he Wa r f o r Independence, and subsequently concluded to try his fortunes in Kentucky, moving his family into the heart of the Blue Grass region; his wife was Miss Mary SMITH, of Scotch-Irish descent, and of the old Covenanter faith. Both lived to be over four-score years of age. Barzilla and Mary BAIRD had the following children: Mary Elizabeth, wife of Jesse Edward, a farmer in Oklahoma; Martha Jane, wife of John W. NOGGINS, a farmer of Carroll County, KY; William T., of this sketch; Parker, who owns a farm in Carroll County, KY; Agnes, unmarried and a resident of Garden City, Kan.; John J., traveling salesman, whose home is in Beloit, Kan.; Nancy T., wife of W. T. EASTERDAY, a grocer of Watson, Cal. The mother of these children died in February, 1846, aged forty-seven years, and the fa ther a f te rward mar r ied Eliza WRIGHT, of Owen County, KY., who bore him six children. Mr. BAIRD died September 20, 1885, at the age of eighty-two years, as a result of an in jury sustained while engaged in assisting a neighbor in lifting an immense log. He was actively interested in the Methodist Episcopal Church, in which he held official positions.

William T. BAIRD was reared to farm life and received a district school education during the winter months. The remainder of the year he helped to clear his father's farm, aided in making rails and was a first-class hand at cradling wheat. He attributes much of his success in life to the fact that he would never partake of liquor under any circumstances. After reaching his majority he engaged in teaching in Grant County, Ky., and three months afterward came to Missouri in company with Prof. NASON. A part of the journey he made by steamer, and landing at La Grange, he rode as far as Kirksville, where he stopped on account of the impassable condition of the roads, his intended destination

being a point in Kansas. The date of his arrival here was March 21,1857, and for the next seven months he found employment in teaching in Elys District; then for four months he conducted a school in Wilson Township, and finally was for a year in partnership with Prof. NASON in Kirksvi Ile.

August 24,1858, Mr. BAIRD married Martha C., daughter of Matthew P. HANNAH. About this time he accepted a position as clerk for J. C. THATCHER at fifteen dollars a months, and when his wages were raised to twenty dollars he thought he was doing well. His wife was a most efficient aid and rocked their first baby in a cradle improvised from a shoe box. Their eldest child, Frank, who was instructed in business ways by his father, is now a banker in Helena, Mont. Ella died at the age of two years, and Aggie Myrtle when an infant of two months. Alta Melone, who is now studying in Mission Valley College, Marshall, Mo., is talented as a singer and gives great promise.

In 1859 Mr. BAIRD was employed by the Circuit Clerk to make out tax books and the same fall, when a branch of the Bank of St. Louis was organized here, he was made clerk. In 1863 he was appointed cashier, and continued to hold that position for two years and until the bank closed up its business in compliance with an act of the Legislature. In 1866 he took charge of t he p r i va te bank o f S tebb ins & Po r t e r , conducting the same for a year, and then, in company with S. REED, he bought out the firm. A year later Mr. REED disposed of his interest to Melone & Epperson, the style of the firm becoming Baird, Melone & Co. For ten years they were very successful and passed through the crisis of 1873 unscathed. In 1878 Mr. BAIRD bought out his partners and conducted the business alone as the Exchange Bank of W. T. Baird. In 1882 he organized the First National Bank, of which he was the principal owner and cashier. The First International Bank, with

which he is now connected, was regularly organized under the State laws in November, 1894.

Mr. BAIRD is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, of which he is a Ruling E lder , and i s T reasurer o f the Synod o f Missouri, and also Treasurer of the Church Extension Association of the Synod of Missouri. He is a member and Vice-President of the Board of Trustees of the Missouri Valley College, and its Chairman of the Finance Committee, having charge of the endowment funds. At a meeting o f the Board o f T rus tees , the fo l l ow ing resolution was adopted on motion of J. C. COBB:

"A true friend of Christian education is a loyal friend of Christ and of His Church. The man who gives his money for the purpose of endowing a religious college is a far-seeing benefactor to the coming generations of his race. 'Well done, good and faithful servant,' is the manner in which our Lord would recognize the faithfulness of his stewards. Following this Divine example, we desire, in the name of the Lord and of the Church, to express to William T. BAIRD our hearty gratitude for his generous additional gift o f f i ve thousand do l l a r s t o h i s a l r eady mun i f i c en t g i f t o f a l i k e amoun t t o the endowment fund of Missouri Valley College. 'He tha t sowe th boun t i f u l l y sha l l r eap a l so bountifully.' The names as well as the deeds of generous and faithful men are inheritance of the Church. In order, therefore, that the name of our brother and co-laborer may be fittingly connected with our col lege in a memorial relation, he is hereby requested to nominate one of the chairs of the institution, the same to be known hereafter according to his designation.

"Da t ed J une 11 , 1890 . "JAMES MARTIN, Secretary."

Complying with this suggestion Mr. BAIRD named the chair Baird-Mitchell, the latter out of compliment to his pastor, the Rev. J. B.

MITCHELL, D. b., under whose teachings he had sat for eighteen years. A literary society in the same college is called the Bairdean, out of compliment to our subject. He is a life member of the American Bible Society of New York, and of the Board of Missions of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, St. Louis, and is a member of the Board of Publication of the Cumberland Presbyterian Publishing House, Nashville, Tenn. For thirty years he has been Superintendent of the Sunday School in Kirksville. Fraternally he was for seven consecutive years Master of the Kirksville Masonic lodge, and for several years was Deputy Grand Master of the Second Masonic District of Missouri. Politically he is a Democrat.

++++FAMILY LEGENDS & TRADITIONS++++

JAMES BAIRD, EARLY SANTA FE TRADER, by Frank B. Golley, Graduate of Purdue, Washington State and Michigan State Universities, now teaching zoology at the University of Georgia, a descendant of James Baird, Santa Fe Trader. April, 1959

COMPREHENSIVE STUDIES of the prominent pioneers of the Santa Fe trade and the

Southwestern fur trade are relatively rare in historical literature. This may be due, in

part, to the fact that few diaries and written records were kept by these men, many of

whom were forced to operate illegally in Spanish territory and, risking capture, could not keep documents which might incriminate them. Possibly this is the reason that James BAIRD, one of the early pioneers of the Santa Fe trade, has been mentioned only briefly in published accounts. By gathering scattered records which refer to BAIRD and adding unpublished material from family records, I hope in this paper to indicate BAIRD's importance in the history of the Southwest, and, moreover, to provide the basis for a definitive study of his life.

The history of James BAIRD has captured the imagination of several family historians. First, his grandson, James Wallace BAIRD, of Louisville, Kentucky, gathered source material and compiled several manuscripts which are deposited with the Missouri Historical Society. Second, his great-grandson, and my grandfather, Captain Lewis Conway BAIRD, United States Army, gathered additional material, traced the route of the Santa Fe trail in 1937, and presented his findings to the Pennsylvania Historical Society. Walter Bond DOUGLAS has used J. W. BAIRD's manuscripts to write a brief biographical sketch of James BAIRD for his edition of Thomas JAMES, Three Years Among the Indians and Mexicans. Unfortunately, the records and diaries of BAIRD's wife, which probably contained much valuable information, were carelessly destroyed by a daughter in the late 1800's.

James BAIRD was born in 1767, at Carlisle, Pennsylvania. His father, David BAIRD, was of Scotch ancestry and may have been descended from Sir Robert BAIRD, a merchant of Edinburgh, Scotland. David BAIRD was a Revolutionary War soldier, who served as a private in Captain James POWERS' company of the 7th Battalion of the Cumberland Militia in 1777, and later, in 1790, was killed at Fort Wayne, Indiana, while a non-commissioned officer in the Pennsylvania artillery. The mother of James BAIRD is not known.

James BAIRD himself was a member of the Cumberland Militia in 1793, and was either stationed or living at the fort at Erie, Pennsylvania, when he met Jane WILSON of Path Valley, Pennsylvania. In the next year, 1794, James and Jane were married at Path Valley and within the first several years of marriage they adopted a nephew, James, from North Carolina. This adopted son became one of Stephen AUSTIN's colonists and fought in the war of Texan Independence. For two terms he was also sheriff of Fort Bend County, Texas, being known there as Deaf BAIRD. Jane's parents, Thomas and Lady Agnes MURRAY WILSON, had arrived from Ireland in 1767.

+FAMILY LEGENDS di TRADITIONS (CON'T):In 1796 James BAIRD moved with his wife and adopted son, James, from Fort Duquesne to Erie, Pennsylvania. In the next years the BAIRD family increased rapidly, sons William, Thomas WILSON, and Alexander being born in 1803, 1806, and 1812, and daughters Margaret, Nancy MURRAY, Harriet IRWIN, and Mary Ann being born in 1798, 1800, 1805, and 1809 respectively. The birth date of an additional daughter, Jane, is unknown. The family also made several moves during this period. After a relatively long residence in Erie, where BAIRD was elected one of three street commissioners in 1806, they moved first to Pittsburgh in 1807, and then to St. Louis in 1810.Family tradition suggests that BAIRD and the famous explorer, Zebulon MONTGOMERY PIKE, became friends during their stay at Pittsburgh, and that it was through PIKE that BAIRD first became cognizant of the possibilities of the Mexican trade. PIKE had returned from an expedition which had led him to Santa Fe and into the northern provinces of Mexico in 1807. His account of this journey was published in 1808 and may well have contributed to BAIRD's decision to move to St. Louis in 1810 and to undertake a trading expedition to Mexico. After arriving in St. Louis in August, BAIRD set up a blacksmith shop on Main and Clark Streets. This was his usual occupation, and he was apparently successful in the growing town since in the following year, 1811, he moved to Third and Fourth Streets, between Almond and Spruce, and constructed a one-story frame shop. On January 18, 1812, there appeared an advertisement in the Missouri Gazette stating that James BAIRD had moved his business to this new shop on the premises previously owned by John COON. This blacksmith shop, approximately 40 by 80 feet, served as the first courthouse and later as the first theater of St. Louis. In these shops BAIRD made beaver traps, which were in great demand for the active fur trade in the Northwest, and later constructed wagons and pack equipment. A further record of James BAIRD during this period is his listing on the 1811 tax records as assessed for property worth $608.00.

THE FIRST SANTA FE EXPEDITION

Dwring 1811 and 1812, James BAIRD, together with Robert McKNIGHT and SamuelCHAMBERS, developed plans to engage in trade with northern Mexico. The feasibility

of this plan was shown by the journey of Zebulon M. PIKE, as well as by the assorted successfulattempts to reach Santa Fe by Baptiste LaLANDE in 1804, James PURCELL in 1805, and JamesMcLANAHAN, Reuben SMITH, and James PATTERSON in 1810. Although the officialSpanish policy was one of discouraging trade across the prairies, the news of the HidalgoRevolution in 1810 led BAIRD and the others to believe that the trade barriers had beenremoved. Plans then matured for the proposed expedition to Santa Fe. BAIRD, CHAMBERS,McKNIGHT, Benjamin SHREVE, and Michael McDONOGH, as proprietors, each furnished apart of the trade goods carried by the expedition. The goods were probably purchased from

the John McKNIGHT and Thomas BRADY mercantile business, established in St. Louis in 1809,since John McKNIGHT was the brother of Robert of the Santa Fe expedition. BAIRD and his

+FAMILY LEGENDS & TRADITIONS (CON'T):

associates apparently had little competition in the Southwest in 1812, since the efforts of the major established traders of St. Louis were directed at the time toward the Northwest. Manuel LISA and others, who had indicated an earlier interest in the Santa Fe trade, were engaged in the beaver trade on the Missouri River in 1812.

Mules and horses, provisions, and trade goods were finally gathered, and the expedition was ready to leave St. Louis for northern Mexico. The exact date of the departure is unknown, but it was probably late in April, 1812, since the last letter received by BAIRD's wife from her husband was dated from St. Charles, May 6, 1812. On this date too, James and Jesse MORRISON, important merchants from Kaskaskia, gave Robert McKNIGHT a letter of introduction to Baptiste LaLANDE. It may well be that in St. Charles, where the party picked up an interpreter, Charles Myette CUADO (MIERS in some accounts), they also obtained a further consignment of goods from the MORRISONS.

The complete cargo of the expedition was valued at approximately $10,000, and was packed in bundles so that it could be transported by mules. Yard goods were the main items carried, as they were in later years on the trail, along with other items thought to be in great demand in New Mexico....

Besides James BAIRD, there were nine men in this first expedition. Their names and residence, which varies in different accounts, were as follows:

Irelanda denizen of St. Charles

Using Zebulon PIKES's Explorations as their guide book, the party headed up the Missouri River to Fort Osage, which they reached on June 4, 1812. From here the party shifted their course to the southwest toward the great bend of the Arkansas River, and then on into the unknown. Among the many stories handed down to the descendants of James BAIRD is one to the effect that, ignorant of the dangers of the route, BAIRD's exposition forced their way across the fifty-eight miles of the Cimarron Desert, luckily escaping death. An alternate route would be, as PIKE recommended on his map, up the Arkansas River to the Purgatory River, thence to the mountains, and finally to Taos. From available evidence, it appears that the latter route was the one actually used by the BAIRD party.

+FAMILY LEGENDS & TRADITIONS (CON'T):

After traveling along the mountains, the party crossed through the north pass, and finally reached civilization in the form of the Indian village, Taos, in northern New Mexico. There in Taos the travelers found, much to their surprise, that the Hidalgo revolution had long since failed and that they were suspect as spies. They were arrested as such by the Spanish troops, and were conveyed in chains to the capital, Santa Fe. In spite of documents and letters, as well as trade good, proving that the party consisted only of peaceful traders, the governor of New Mexico, Joseph MANRIQUE, caused the party to be thrown into jail at Santa Fe and their goods confiscated and sold at public auction. The governor, on July 24, 1812, sent a letter to Jose Antonio ALANDEZ, instructing him to make an inventory of the goods taken from the Americans.
