Welcome to AP Statistics!
Our textbook is The Practice of Statistics, by Starnes, Yates, and Moore, Fourth Edition, ISBN 978-1-
4292-4559-3.
Your AP Statistics summer assignment consists gathering and analyzing two sets of real-life data.
Statistical data is either quantitative (numerical) or categorical. Quantitative data is data that is
measured in numbers for which it makes sense to take an average, such as the length of time it takes
individuals to run a mile. Categorical data, on the other hand, measures the category that an individual
is in, such as their favorite ice cream flavor. Categorical and quantitative variables are defined on page 3
of the textbook.
You are asked to gather a set of quantitative data and a set of categorical data.
1.
The Quantitative Data.
The first part of your summer assignment is to gather some real-life quantitative data.
Examples of quantitative data include the heights of people, the number of words on a page, the
number of text messages sent in a day or month, or the number of people to visit a certain food pantry
each month. Quantitative data answers questions such as, “How many text messages do you send in a
month?” or “How many people visit this food pantry in a month?”.
Your assignment is to get at least 25 values of some quantitative data that answer a question. If you
choose to do, say, number of text messages sent in a day, you need the number that you have sent each
day for the last 25 days or the number that 25 friends have sent in a day. I want you to get real life datathat you measure, not data from the internet.
The examples that I gave of quantitative data are just examples; you are free to choose your own topic.
The result should be a table of numbers. You do not need to graph the data; we will learn about that in
class. This data will be used for your chapter 1 project.
Here is what I want you to hand in to me:
a.
The question that you asked. (Ex: How many text messages do I receive each day?)
b.
The data table.
c.
A paragraph discussing how you measured your data and what you observed about the results.
Tell me what individual(s) you measured. (The definition of individual is given on page 2 of the
textbook.) Make some intelligent comments on your data. Do you see any patterns in the data?
Does it raise any questions in your mind?
2. The Categorical Data.
The second part of your summer assignment is to gather some real-life categorical data. This data also
should answer a question, but the question has an answer that is a category, rather than a number.

Examples of such questions include, “What is your favorite ice cream flavor?” or “Are you a Republican,
Democrat, or Independent?”.
Your assignment is to get at least 25 values of a categorical variable. The variable must have at least
three categories, so you cannot ask for a person’s gender. (Only two categories.)
Here is what I want you to hand in to me:
a.
The question that you asked. (Ex: What is your favorite ice cream flavor?)
b.
Your data table.
c.
A bar graph of your results labeled with counts. (Ex: 10 chocolate, 5 vanilla)
d.
A circle graph of your results labeled with percents. (Ex: 30% strawberry, 40% moose tracks)
d.
A paragraph discussing how you measured your data and what you observed about the results.
Tell me what individual(s) you measured. (The definition of individual is given on page 2 of the
textbook.) Make some intelligent comments on your data. Do you see any patterns in the data?
Does it raise any questions in your mind?
Since you are asked to make accurate bar and circle graphs, you should use software, such as Microsoft
Excel, or a protractor.
The summer assignment is due Thursday, September 10, 2015. It is worth 64 points and will be graded
on the following scale.
