1. U ing your int ractiv whit boardSwitch on your interactive whiteboard before starting your computer.The power indicator light, in the top-left corner of your board, shouldbe illuminated when the interactive whiteboard is switched on.

When both your Activboard and your computer are fully started, holdthe Activpen lightly on the board, without pushing in the nib. Thecursor, on screen, should line up with the Activpen’s tip. If it doesn’t,you need to calibrate the board.

2. Calibrating your int ractiv whit boardHover the tip of your Activpen over the power indicator light, in thetop-left corner of your board. Take care not to press in the Activpen’snib. Wait a few seconds then follow the instructions that appear on theboard.

Tip for u ing th Activp nIf this is the rst time using an Activpen, try experimenting with thetechniques below:

The Activpen is just like a mouse.

Moving th cur or Hold the pen nib lightly on the board; don’t push in the pen nib. Movethe pen around. The cursor will follow your pen.

L ft-clickTap the pen nib rmly but quickly into the whiteboard.

Right-clickHover the pen nib over the whiteboard, less than a centimetre awayfrom the board. Press the barrel button on the side of the pen.

Click and dragClick on the object you want to move, hold the pen nib down on theboard and then move the pen. The object you have clicked will movewith the pen.

Doubl -clickTwo rm but quick taps with the Activpen’s nib performs the sameaction as a double-click with a mouse.

1. Getting started ( i)‘Flipchart’ i th nam w giv to an Activprimary pr ntation. Lik atraditional paper-based ipchart, an Activprimary ipchart can contain asmany pages as you want. However, unlike a traditional ipchart, you canincorporate a number of different media forms into your ipcharts, includingsound les, videos, animations, interactive activities and web-links. The onlyr al limit i your imagination!

In this tutorial we will create your rst ipchart page, giving you an instantintroduction to om of Activprimary’ mo t important tool .

1. Launching ActivprimaryWhen your computer is fully switched on, you will see the Activprimaryicon on your display.

Double-click on the Activprimary icon with the Activpen.

NOTe: How to double-clickTwo rm but quick taps with the Activpen’s nib performs the sameaction as a double-click with a mouse.

Click OK, or the tick, on any messages until you see Activprimary’sdashboard.

The dashboard is your launchpad to open your les and organiseActivprimary just how you want it. When you have nished thismanual, explore the dashboard for further training ideas and softwareupdates.

On the dashboard, click on New Flipchart.

You’re ready to begin!

The Did You Know box may appear. Click OK.

2. Tool tipA blank ipchart page opens.

Getting started (i)

On the right-hand side of your display is the Main toolbox. Across thebottom of your screen is the Tool Tray.

Move the Activpen lightly on the Activboard without pressing in thepen nib. The computer’s cursor will follow your movement.

If you hover the pen over one of the tools or buttons on the Maintoolbox a tool tip will appear.

Tool tips remind you of a button’s function. Hover over the tool shownhere. If using an Activpen take care to keep the pen still.

You’ll see it is called the Pens, Highlighters and Erasers tool.

3. P n , Highlight r and era r toolThe Pens, Highlighters and Erasers tool is red, showing it is active.

To select a pen, click on one of the icons in the Tool Tray.

Write the word ‘ Welcome’ at the top of the page. Don’t worry if youdon’t get it right rst time, just move on to the next section.

4. Undo tool and R do toolMost changes made in Activprimary can be reversed.

Click on the Undo tool. This will reverse your last action.

Click on it a number of times. Your previous actions will be reversed.

Now click on the Redo tool. This will reinstate actions cancelled withthe Undo tool.

Click on the Redo tool until the full text appears on the page again.

5. Colour pal ttThe colour palette contains a range of colours for you to use. Click onany colour to select it. We have chosen blue.

Choose a different pen width by clicking on a different pen in the ToolTray.

Write ‘ to’ underneath the word ‘ Welcome ’.

IN THe CLAssROOM: Keep changing the penwidth and the coloursyou use to help keepyour lessons colourfuland interesting. Let your students pick their own colour when they write at the board.

6. Cl ar tool

Now we will show you one way to delete items.

Click on the Clear tool.

A menu will appear giving you three options. Select the Clear Screenicon use tool tips to help if necessary. Everything will be deleted fromthe page.

Click on the Undo tool to reinstate the text.

Change the pen’s colour and width again.

Write ‘ Activprimary’ at the bottom of the page. If you make a mistake, just move on to the next section.

7. Marqu s l ct toolClick on the Marquee Select tool.

The Marquee Select tool is used to select and manipulate items onthe page.

Hover the cursor over the letter ‘ y ’ of Activprimary until a crossappears. The cross shows that the item can be selected. Click on theletter. When you click correctly a box will appear, showing you what isselected.

8. Flipchart BinClick on the Flipchart Bin to delete the item.

The letters will disappear from the page.

9. era r toolYou can also delete lines using erasers.

Click on the Pens, Highlighters and Erasers button.

Select one of the Eraser icons in the Tool Tray.

Draw over the word ‘ Welcome’ to make it disappear.

Your selection depends on how you wrote the word ‘ Activprimary ’.

The Flipchart Bin is another useful way to delete items from the page.

Click on the Undo tool.

Click on the Undo tool to make the word reappear.

10. Highlight r toolBefore nishing this tutorial, we will show you one of Activprimary’smost important presentation tools: the highlighter.

In the Tool Tray, select a Highlighter tool.

Click on the Teacher Tools Menu button and select Save a Flipchart.

Select a colour.

Write over the word ‘ Welcome ’ to highlight it.

2. D ign Mod and Pr ntation ModThe Teacher Tools Menu button, at the top of the Main toolbox, isyellow. This shows that you are currently in Presentation Mode.Presentation Mode is best used when you are teaching in front of your students.

Click on the Teacher Tools Menu button and select the Design Modebutton.

1. Opening a previously saved ipchartLaunch Activprimary as you did in the previous tutorial.

In the dashboard, your recent ipcharts are displayed under theheading: ‘Open a recent ipchart’. Click on the ipchart ‘ Activprimary 1’ . to open it.

Click OK on the Did You Know box.

The Teacher Tools Menu button turns red. Design Mode is best usedwhen creating ipcharts. More design options are available and anylinks are inactive.

3. Pag l ctor Currently your ipchart has just one page. To con rm this, click on thePage Selector button, which shows the current page number.

The Tool Tray changes to show thumbnail images of all your ipchartpages. At this point there’s just one thumbnail image in the Tool Tray.

4. N xt Pag button and Pr viou Pag buttonClick on the Next Page button.

This adds a new page to the end of your ipchart. There are now twopages in the Tool Tray. Page 2 is the active page.

Click twice more on the Next Page button to create two more pages.

In the Tool Tray, click on the rst page to make it active.

ipcharts, helping youto control the pace of the lesson.

NOTe: You can alsouse the PreviousPage button to getback to the rst page.

We want to select all the words on the page.

To do this:

1. Click on the page, to the top-left of all the items.

2. Click and drag diagonally to the bottom-right of all the items onthe page. A box will expand as you move, showing you what isselected.

3. Release the Activpen or the left mouse button when everythingis selected..

A dotted rectangle and pick-up boxes will surround the letters,showing that they have been selected.

6. Pick-up boxPick-up boxes are the boxes that surround selected items.

Clicking and moving these boxes changes the size and location of theselected object.

When you have nished, click on the Undo tool until the text is back to

its original state.

Make sure everything on the page is selected before moving on.

7. Duplicat buttonHover the cursor over one of the text’s lines until you see a cross.

Double-click on the text.

The Object Edit toolbox will open.

Try moving these boxes to see what they do.

The Object Edit toolbox contains many design options.

Click on the Duplicate button once to create a copy of the text. Don’tclick on the page yet.

8. Moving it m b tw n pagThe duplicated text will automatically be selected. Hover the cursor over the text so that you see a cross. Click on the text and drag it tothe second thumbnail in the panel.

When you release the pen, a menu will appear with two options: MoveHere and Copy Here. In this case select Move Here.

Page two will become the active page. The text will be pasted here.

NOTe: Any moveable item on a page can be moved or copied onto other ipchartpages in this way, helping you to create multiple pages in an instant.

Click and drag on the page to select the word ‘ Activprimary ’.

Click on the Flipchart Bin to delete this word, leaving you with‘Welcome to ’.

9. A clo r look at pick-up boxClick and drag around the words ‘ Welcome to ’ to select them.

Click and drag on the bottom right pick-up box.

Note how this box changes the size but not the proportions of the text.

Shrink the text to around a half its original size.

Click and drag on the Freely Move Object pick-up box. This box offersone way to move items around the page.

Place the text neatly in the top-left corner of the page.

Don’t forget that the Undo tool is always available if you make anymistakes.

With the whole text selected, drag the text over to page three. Whenthe menu appears, select Copy Here.

The text will be copied onto the page three thumbnail, which willbecome the active page. Note, however, that when you select CopyHere rather than Move Here, the text will also return to its originalposition on page two.

Select the whole text again and copy it onto page four.

IN THe CLAssROOM: Using this techniqueyou only have to ndone excellent imagefor your lesson. You can thenrepeat it many times over many pages in your classesas your students analyseit using different colouredpens, highlighters or other presentation tools.

Click on the Exit button to close Activprimary.

Launch Activprimary.

In the dashboard, select New Flipchart.

Using the Pen tool, write ‘ Working with text’ towards the top of theboard.

Select the Marquee Select tool.

To type text on the page, you just have to hover the cursor on thepage and start typing. We will demonstrate this now:

Click on the page, underneath ‘ Working with text ’.

Using your computer’s keyboard, type: ‘ creating typed text’ .

Note how the Text tool is automatically selected in the Main toolbox.The Tool Tray changes to show options for editing text.

Click on the page under the previous text.

Type: ‘ Change font’ .

NOTe: Don’t worry if you realise that you’ve made a mistake in the text after nalising it on the page. We will show you how to correct text later in this tutorial.

In the Tool Tray, click in the eld containing the number - the font size.Click on the drop-down arrow and select 20. Press enter on your keyboard.

Click underneath the previous text.

Type: ‘ Change font size’.

In the Tool Tray, select a different colour.

Type: ‘ Change colour’.

3. Copying t xt tylThis section can only be done at a PC. Move on to the next section,Editing text, if you are at an interactive whiteboard.

If you like the look of a text on the page, you may want to copy itsstyle to other texts. This is done using the Colour Picker tool and theFill tool.

Select the Fill/Colour Picker icon from the Main toolbox.

Click on the Colour Picker icon in the Tool Tray.

Press the Ctrl button on your keyboard and, with the Ctrl key pressed,click on one of the texts. In this way you copy the style of a text.

Before moving on, rearrange the words, if necessary, using theMarquee Select tool.

Leave space for another line of text towards the bottom of the page.

IN THe CLAssROOM: The recommendedminimum font for text ona ipchart is 18.

NOTe: When using the text format painter, if the text increases in size some of the text could disappear. If this happens, use the Marquee Select tool to change

the size of the text box, making the whole text visible.

4. editing t xtTo edit any typed text on the page:

Click on the text with the Marquee Select tool selected, then quicklyclick on the text again.

You need to get the correct technique for this to work. Click too slowlyand nothing will happen; click too fast and the Object Edit toolbox will

appear.

When you have clicked correctly, the Tool Tray will change to showthe text editing options.

Click and drag on the sentence to select it

Retype the sentence, or correct any sentences on the page.

Click on the Colour Picker icon again to deselect it. The Fill tool willnow be active.

Press the Ctrl key and click on all the other typed words on the pageto standardise their style.

NOTe: If the ObjectEdit toolbox appears,click on the Edit Texttool. This is an alternative wayto edit text.

Click on the Floating Keyboard icon in the Tool Tray.

You can move the oating keyboard around the page by clicking anddragging on any area of the keyboard which doesn’t contain an icon.

In the Tool Tray, select the Categories button.

2. snap to Grid

When using grids, the Tool Tray contains options to increase or decrease the grid’s size, and to delete the grid from the page. We willnow explore another option: select the Snap to Grid tool.

The Snap to Grid tool is an important design tool.

Now, when you draw lines or move any item on the page they willautomatically line up with the grid. This helps to create neat ipcharts.

IN THe CLAssROOM: UsingSnap to Grid is great whenworking with pupils whosemotor skills are poor.Snap to Grid lets themline up pictures in apictogram or blocks in ablock graph neatly.

3. Pen Modi er toolboxClick on the Pens, Highlighters and Erasers tool.

Click on the Pen Modi er toolbox icon in the Tool Tray.

The Pen Modi er toolbox will open. This contains a range of tools for drawing lines and shapes. Using the tools in this box we will draw abar chart.

Click and drag on the blue area to move the toolbox to the top right of the page.

4. Horizontal Lin toolClick on the Horizontal Line tool. Select an appropriate pen thicknessand colour for the axes of a graph. Click and drag a horizontal line onthe bottom of the ipchart page. As you are using Snap to Grid, theaxis lines up perfectly with the grid. This will be the bottom axis of thechart.

7. Fill toolThe Fill tool lets you add blocks of colour to the page. We will use theFill tool to change the colour of one of the rectangles.

Click on the Fill/Colour Picker tool in the Main toolbox.

Click on blue in the Colour Palette.

Click inside one of the shapes to ll it with colour. IN THe CLAssROOM: Students enjoy usingthe Fill tool to addblocks of colour instantly to a page. Thiscan make any lesson instantly

more creative. You can alwaysuse the Undo tool if you don’tlike the result.

8. Mor colour optionFor more colour options, right-click on one of the blank colour swatches.

Select a colour from the box which appears.

The colour in the Colour Palette will change to show the colour youhave chosen.

Right-click on the last animal you added to the page.

Select To Back.

The image will now appear beneath the other animal images.

Note that you’ve changed the order of the images, but they allremain on the middle layer. Working with images in this way is calledstacking. It becomes important when arranging lots of images andtexts on a page.

When shapes are placed on the page, they are also put on the middlelayer. As we create this exercise, we want to be sure that the shapeswill all be above any animals on the page.

Right-click on a rectangle.

Select Top Layer.

Repeat for the other two rectangles.

Using pick-up boxes, change the images’ size and move each one intoits own space. Cover each image with a rectangle.

You’ve used layers to create a basic ‘guess what?’ exercise. IN THe CLAssROOM: This technique is thebasis of a huge rangeof interactive exercises.You can hide theanswers to questions, or hidethe next part of an exercise,letting you choose the momentwhen students are given theanswers.

Click on the Increase Object Size button. The size of the object willincrease by 10%.

Click on the Decrease Object Size button three times.

Change the size of the other images so they are all different.

Until now we’ve shown you how to use images from the ResourceLibrary. The internet is always available, however, if you can’t nd animage you want in the Resource Library. If you nd an image you likeon the internet, store it in your part of the Resource Library so you canuse the image as often as you want.

Select the Web Browser icon.

In the Address bar, type ‘ www.google.co.uk’ . Click Enter on your keyboard.

In the Google web page, click on Images.

5. GroupingCurrently, all the images appear as individual items. We want themall to exist as one item, so it is easier to move and manipulate them infuture. To do this we will group the images.

Using the Marquee Select tool, click and drag to select all four images.

Click on the Grouped icon.

11. Lock on BackgroundEnter Design Mode.

So far we have worked with two of the rectangles. Right-click on theremaining rectangle.

Select Lock on Background.

The rectangle will be placed on the bottom layer, making the imagevisible.

You won’t be able to move the rectangle in either Design Mode or Presentation Mode, but you will be able to move the animal.

To move the rectangle, right-click and select Unlock BackgroundObjects.

Click on the Marquee Select tool.

Hover your cursor over the ruler just below the measurements.

The cursor will change to include a cross.

This means that you can move the ruler. Move the ruler to the bottomof the screen.

Rotate the ruler.

Move the cursor towards the top of the calibrated area and the cursor will change again. This means you can rotate the ruler.

The degree of rotation is displayed in the centre of the ruler.

Rotate the ruler back to 0º.

2. Math toolboxDouble-click on the ruler to open the Maths toolbox.

Click on the Increase Object Size button until the ruler is over 16centimetres long.

Close the Maths toolbox.

3. U ing th rul r Click on the Pens, Highlighters and Erasers tool, and select a thin penwidth. Move the cursor to just above the top ruler line. The pen cursor should change to include a line. This means any line you draw willfollow the edge of the ruler.

Move the cursor to the zero point on the ruler, then click and drag tothe right. Draw a line 16 centimetres long.

Hover the cursor towards the top of the calibrated area and rotate theruler to 40º above the rst line.

From zero, draw another 16 centimetre line.

Drag the zero point of the ruler to the end of the second line.

Rotate the ruler so you can complete the triangle.

Draw another line with the ruler to make a triangle.

Double-click on the ruler to open the Maths toolbox.

Click on the Delete button to delete the ruler from the page.

NOTe: Experiment with the Point to Point tool, in the Pen Modi er toolbox,for another way to create triangles.

4. Protractor toolSelect the Special Tools icon.

Click on the Protractor icon in the Tool Tray.

Select Half Protractor.

A protractor will appear on the page.

As with the ruler, the protractor has several regions which do differentthings.

If you hover the cursor over the inner area of the protractor, thecursor will change signifying that you can click and drag it around the

ipchart.

Move the protractor so you can measure one of the angles.

Like the ruler, you can also rotate the protractor by clicking on theouter areas and dragging. Rotate the protractor and measure the topangle.

5. Creating lled segmentsDouble-click on the protractor to open the Maths toolbox.

Click on the Decrease Object Size button until the protractor is smallenough just to ll one corner of the triangle.

Close the Maths toolbox.

Click on the Pens, Highlighters and Erasers tool. Select a thin penwidth.

Now, with the pen, draw a line around the curved edge of theprotractor as you did with the ruler.

When you have nished, however, a lled segment will be created.

Move the protractor and draw two more segments in the other angles,changing the pen colour each time.

When you have nished, delete the protractor from the page using theMaths toolbox.

IN THe CLAssROOM: Teachers like to create lled segments in this way in numeracy lessons sothey can move the segments together to show how the three angles of thetriangle add up to 180º. Similar techniques can be used to demonstratethat alternate angles or opposite angles are equal.

Click on the Next Page button.

Using the Pen tool, write ‘ Compasses and the XY Origin Tool’ on thepage.

Click on the Delete icon to delete the compass from the page.

An animation will show the dice rolling.

IN THe CLAssROOM: Whilst the Dice tool ismost obviously used inthe place of real dice, itis also, more generally,a useful random number generator. Teachers, for example, use the dice to helpthem decide who will answer the next question, or to decidewhich question should beanswered next. Put a studentin charge of the Roll the Dicebutton.

Close the Dice Roller before moving on.

9. Floating calculator Click on the Floating Calculator button.

The oating calculator works just like the oating keyboard.

Click on the Add Dice Total to Flipchart Page button to put the totalnumber on the page.

Right-click on the calculator for a menu showing an option to displayan adult calculator.

Another option lets you add the calculation to the ipchart.

Close the oating calculator before moving on.

IN THe CLAssROOM: The ‘Add Calculation to Flipchart Page’ feature is great when used with apage of equations - for example multiplications and number boards.

10. Fraction Cr ator toolboxThe last number tool in this tutorial is the Fraction Creator toolbox.

With the Special Tools icon selected, click on the Fraction Creator Toolbox icon

The Fraction Creator toolbox offers a way to put fractions on the page.

You can create fractions comprising numbers, letters or both numbersand letters.

Write the number ‘ 1’ in the top box and the number ‘ 2’ in the lower box.

Click on the Add to Flipchart Page button and the fraction will appear on the ipchart – you might have to move the Fraction Creator toolboxto see it.

Close the Fraction Creator toolbox when you have nished.

Save the ipchart with the name ‘ Activprimary 7’ .

Close Activprimary.

Before moving on, close any windows.

A box will open called the Create a Link Object box. Type ‘ www. prometheanworld.com’ in the box headed: ‘Enter a Web Site link to’.

Click on OK.

Select the Marquee Select tool. You are in Design Mode, so the link isnot active. Click on the text. Move it to the centre of the page.

Click again and change the the text to: Promethean .

Enter Presentation Mode.

Now when you hover the cursor over the link, an arrow will appear showing that it is active.

Click on the link to launch the website.

IN THe CLAssROOM: Creating links in thisway means you candisplay the exact webpage you want at theprecise part of the lesson youwant.

Close the web browser before moving on.

4. PrintingClick on the Next Page button to get to the page headed: ‘ Printing ’.

When you have nished a ipchart, containing interactive exercisesfor your students, you may want to print out some pages, to createhandouts.

Click on the Teacher Tools Menu button.

Select the Print button.

A range of options are available here. When you have decided howyou want to print your ipchart, click on the Print button if you want toprint the ipchart. Otherwise select Cancel.

Click on the Next Page button. IN THe CLAssROOM: Print out your ipchartsto create handouts for exercises, homework or revision.

5. Pag Not toolPage notes are an essential nal touch for any ipchart if you intendto reuse or share it. When you’ve carefully prepared a ipchart andthen returned to it a few months later, you’ll soon nd out why they areessential! The same applies when you want to nd out how someoneelse’s ipchart works.

You can add page notes to every page of a ipchart. We recommendthat you, at least, add page notes to the rst page of a ipchart.

Click on the Teacher Tools Menu button.

Click on the Page Notes button.

The Page Notes box appears.

Write notes for this ipchart here, such as:‘This ipchart can be used to introduce some important fnal touchesto ipcharts’ .

When you close the box your page notes will automatically be savedwith the ipchart. An icon will be placed on the page so you knownotes are available. Click on the icon to open your Page Notes.

Save the ipchart as ‘ Activprimary 9’ .

Exit Activprimary.

Whilst doing the gesture you should hold the Activpen close to theboard. Don’t touch the board with the Activpen.

1. Hold the cursor still.2. Move your Activpen to the top dot and back to its star ting point.

When you perform the gesture correctly the pen will be selected.

Try experimenting with the gesture tool using the other three dotsbefore moving on.

Click on the Teacher Tools Menu button.

Click on the Menu button and select Settings. The ActivprimarySettings box will open.

Click on Gesture Wheel in the left-hand section. Untick the EnableGestures box.

6. Und r tanding th ra r The Eraser tool works by pasting an eraser image on the page. Thisimage makes anything on the top layer invisible. It doesn’t makeanything on other layers invisible. This is why the line you drew withthe pen tool (on the top layer) became invisible but the typed text (onthe middle layer) remained visible.

The eraser image can be moved around the page.

To illustrate this:

Select the Marquee Select tool and click the area you have justerased.

When it is selected, click and drag on the eraser image to move it.The Pen tool’s lines will become visible again.

Move the eraser shape back over the pen line.

It will become invisible again.

NOTe: Move any item, such as a photo, onto the top layer and it can be madeinvisible using the Eraser tool. Using this technique you can erase a photo fromthe page to reveal something beneath.

7. spotlight toolClick on the Special Tools icon.

Click on the Spotlight tool in the Tool Tray.

Four options are available for you to explore.

In this case, select Circular Spotlight.

The page should become black, except for one circle showing theipchart beneath.

Click and drag on the page to increase or decrease the size of thespotlight.

Decrease the size of the spotlight to show just one word on this page. IN THe CLAssROOM: On this page, youcould use the spotlightto encourage your students to read thequestion one word at atime. The Spotlight tool letsstudents build up conceptsfrom individual fragments,ideal for starter exercises.

Click on the Spotlight icon to switch off the spotlight.

NOTe: As with the Reveal tool, you can turn the page after switching on thespotlight, so students don’t see the full screen until you choose.

Click on the Clock tool in the Power Tools toolbox.

Five clock options will become available.

The top three options display a range of standard clocks.

The other two options display different stopwatches.

Select the Count Down button. The Count Down From box appears onthe screen.

Type ‘ 10’ in the Second box.

NOTe: We are assuming that no devices are registered. If some devices arelisted under the Device Name heading, click Remove All and con rm that youwant to remove them. Check with whoever registered them before doing this!

Activote

Device registration is a timed process, so read through the followingsteps before trying them out:

1. Click on the Register button in the Device Registration program.

2. Take the device labelled 1.

a) Press the central Register button on your device. Hold thebutton down for a few seconds.

b) On screen, the voting device will be added to the RegisteredDevices list and given a name (A1, A2 etc).

3. Now registered the other devices, in order, using steps 2a-2b.

4. When you have nished, click on the Device Registrationprogram’s Stop button, which will have replaced the Register button on the display.

Close the box when you have nished. This will save the devices wehave registered.

The devices will remain registered until you remove them.

TROUBLesHOOTeR: You can tell the device is communicating with thecomputer if the red, then the green button on the device ashes. If only the redbutton ashes, your device is not able to communicate with the Activboard or Activhub for some reason. This could be because the device’s batteries arerunning low or your Activboard isn’t switched on. If you are using an Activhub,make sure it is plugged in and the central button is lit.
