President’s Welcome

Wow, these last seven months have been quite exciting….and exhausting at the same time. Your board has been very busy filling some large shoes from our previous board members. First, we updated our membership site and payment pro-cessor. The site is easier for you to navigate, allows us to add member only information and take credit cards or invoice members. We are excited to continue updating it and hope to have it up to date by August. Please let us know throughout today or via email at [email protected] what updates you would like to see. We also just completed a four month audit of our accounts by Twilley, Rom-mel and Stephens, PA. We gained some valuable knowledge and will be im-plementing their recommendations. Today during our meeting we will be discussing them with you. It is nice to know what we are doing well and what changes need to be made for security of our funds. Hopefully you are enjoying the new monthly newsletter and have had an op-portunity to take advantage of our AACRAO Chat and Chew as well as the presented webinar regarding transfer credit. Our Professional Development team released their first recommended readings and will have a second com-ing out after our meeting ….so please keep an eye out for that. In two weeks Seth Kamen, President Elect and I will be heading to DC for AACRAO Leadership where we hope to bring back new information to our members as well as learn additional strategies for running our organization. Our biggest change comes directly from your feedback. So many of you, our members told us that a June meeting would be best. To ease this transition we are not only holding today’s one day meeting, but another in December before moving to a two day only meeting in June 2019. We encourage each of you to continue to provide us feedback regarding this change as well as on our new Veteran meeting/conference track. We hope to continue this track during our future meetings. Thank you all for your patience and support as we have made several chang-es since November. We hope each of you enjoy the conference and join a CAPACRAO committee.

Session 4.1 Title: PROSPER and Perish: How the Proposed 2018 Higher Education Act Could Cripple HBCUs Presenters: Jason DeSousa, Howard University; Nick Boyd, Morgan State University Abstract: Since Lyndon B. Johnson signed the first Higher Education Act (HEA) into law in 1965, for decades American Colleges and universities rested on a firm platform for college access and success. HEA had a particularly profound impact on the progress of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-serving Institutions, and Tribal Colleges. Under President George W. Bush, HBCUs enjoyed additional Title III funds and President Barack Obama strengthened the HBCU White Initiative and provided financial resources for Black males through his "My Brothers Keepers Initiative.” Congress laid the foundation for a 2018 HEA that is likely to have deleterious effects on HBCUs. Some components of the proposed Bill, which was passed by the Congressional Work Force and Education Committee in early 2018, include the elimination of critical federal grants, reductions in Federal Work Study and in Title III funds. This session is designed to better understand its negative impact on underrepresented, underserved, and underfinanced students who attend HBCUs. Room: BE162 Session 4.2 Title: Working With Transfer Students in a SEM Environment Presenter: Seth Kamen, Montgomery College Abstract: With a focus on SEM, attendees will explore best practices to frame a conversation on using the enrollment cycle to influence transfer recruitment, matriculation and enrollment. The presentation will be a share and experience opportunity for all professionals working with transfer students. Room: BE158
