Welcome

After a five-year absence from an auction sale following our move south, we return this Monday 21st September to hold our 36th Raff Angus Bull Auction Sale.Since our re-location south we have continued with bull sales by selling privately in the paddock. Both new and loyal clients have supported us over these past years however we were aware that some would find it simply too difficult purchasing off King Island. In making this decision we were mindful of the current global difficulties and travel restrictions – current and potential. This sale will be held on an online platform only with no traditional physical attendance auction sale day. All bulls will be sold through the Elite Livestock Live In-room Online Auction. We are well aware that actual inspection of bulls in essential for most. Because of this and our preference to have bulls safely on mainland and settled prior to selling, these bulls were sent across to mainland early July and are now located at COROWA, NSW. Open inspection day will be held on Friday 11th of September. Inspections outside this date can occur by prior arrangement. For those who cannot inspect these bulls, through personal reasons or by state COVID regulations, we have endeavoured to supply every piece of information required. Along with the pedigrees and individual data, both EBV and actual, we will have a video of each lot available by very early September.

We promote this sale as ‘Pedigrees with a Difference with Performance on the Hook’… We like looking at our cattle. We obviously want our cows to maintain all fertility and maternal qualities of both past and modern times but we still want them to have the capacity and rib with that hip and pin width and depth of body shape of the past. We want our bulls to have presence with strong heads and length of neck. We want them to have width of top line, depth of hindquarter with actual muscle expression. Weight still drives profitability – they must weigh heavy with high yields and extra carcass weight. We find that the modern Angus genetics are too small for our program and generally they lack the capacity, bone and muscle that we are looking for. Most have a side profile but from behind have limited natural thickness with narrow hips and pin-set with a protruding tail see - we don’t like poppy eyes and piggy ears with narrow muzzles. Because of this change in phenotype within the modern Angus and our refusal to use these genetics our

pedigrees are different. In fact, if you were to look at the most widely used high $Index sires over the past decade Raff Angus would not contain any of them. Marketing of this year’s sale bulls… we don’t boast sale comments such as ‘this lot ranks in the top 10% for all Indexes…’ This is our choice – it’s not because we can’t but because we choose not to. They’re easy to create. Instead we have stuck to our beliefs, our client’s successes and our own within herd carcase feedback data and actual paddock performance. If you are a modern cattleman that likes graphs and put more emphasis on the piece of paper than the integrity of the producer and its program then you won’t like our cattle. If you like the actual carcass data on full brothers to these sale bulls and the fact that we have near five hundred carcasses from the past 2 ½ years that prove our genetics are profitable and trust that over the past 55 years we have been focused on producing Angus seedstock genetics that are profitable for all sectors of the Australian Beef Industry - then these bulls should well suit your program.

These bulls have not been pampered. They are 100% pasture raised. They arrived at COROWA, NSW on July 8th after their Bass Strait crossing. Since arrival on mainland they have been Ultrasound Scanned, Clipped, Breeding Soundness Examined and then videoed – all within near one month from arrival. Please be mindful of this when viewing each lot. Following arrival these bulls have continued to be grazed in a single mob on pasture only without any supplements.

We are pleased to be able to offer this year’s spring born draft of Raff Angus Bulls for public sale. They are a very high-quality line-up that represent this our 56th year of dedicated breeding to the Angus Breed and the Australian Beef Industry. Be sure to contact us for any inquiry regarding this year’s sale bulls.

Raff Angus Carcass Data…

The below MSA Index graph highlights where Raff Angus sits nationally with its genetics.

It reflects all steers processed nationwide on that day (13/07/20) and sorted for direct comparison with an ossification of less than 230, are grass fed only with no HGP. These twenty-one-month-old spring born steers are genetic brothers to these sale bulls. Their MSA Index was higher, they have more fat, more marbling with a heavier carcass weight.

Raff Angus results National Results

Part of our move south was to allow for both expansion of breeder numbers and a re-structure of our business model. In Queensland 94% of every bull calf weaned was sold for breeding. Obviously, this meant that we only had a limited number of steers to follow through to a carcass end point however, as seasons were almost always against us, these were always the first to be sold. Since re-location we will this year calve at near full production – 800 breeders. From these 25% of the male calves (100) will be sold for breeding duties and 75% (300) will become steers which will be pasture fattened on farm through to carcasses hanging on the hook. Whilst not at full production in past years we still however have had near 500 animals processed over the past 2 ½ years. This has given us invaluable feedback.

Carcass results on full brothers to these sale bulls – HIGHER INDEX, MORE FAT, MORE MARBLING, HEAVIER CARCASS WEIGHT – MORE PROFIT.

In the past 12 months Raff Angus have processed 128 pedigree and performance recorded cows.

This graph highlights that Raff genetics again perform well above industry averages. Younger in age these cull cows again expressed more marbling and fat with a carcass weight advantage of 75 kilograms. Their MSA Index was substantially higher than the nation average.

Raff Angus results National Results

Raff Angus results National Results

In the past 12 months Raff Angus have processed 211 fully pedigree recorded prime yearling steers and heifers with an ossification score of less than 230.

These Raff carcasses yielded a higher MSA Index, with more fat coverage and more marbling when compared nationally. Furthermore, these Raff Angus animals boasted an 84-kilogram heavier carcass. Adjusting to age similarities and at current market values of past 12 months at $6/kg dressed weight these Raff Angus genetics have added $300/head extra profit.

Sale Information

Sale DayThis sale be held through the Elite Livestock Live In-room Online Auction platform. This sale will not be held by physically attending a traditional auction sale day. Please refer to page 7 where it shows how to register. Be sure to contact Elite Livestock Auctions 1300 15 31 35 for any queries. Michael Glasser of GTSM will be auctioneering the lots. Michael has sold for us over many sales for us when in Queensland. If you would prefer to bid over the phone please contact Michael before the sale to arrange – 0403 526 702.

It is important to familiarise yourself with this online platform prior to sale day. Be sure to go to www.elitelivestockauctions.com.au to have a look. During this sale each lot will be sold individually. You will have access to the lot’s pedigree and performance information while their video is being played. You will physically see Michael Glasser auction the bulls. He will call bids and drop the hammer at conclusion of each lot. Within our SALES page we will have a video clip of a lot being sold under this system from a previous Elite Online auction sale for your interest. InspectionsBulls will be available for inspection on Friday 11th of September. If this date does not suit alternate days can be arranged by appointment - please contact Michael Glasser 0403 526 702 or Andrew Raff 0429 691 975 to arrange.

Registration StatusAll but one bull is Herd Book Registered with the Angus Society of Australia. The other, Lot 1, was downgraded to Angus Performance Registered due to a small white mark under his brisket.

Animal IdentificationAll bulls are freeze branded with the ‘bench axe’ symbol, year letter and number. A near side ear tag has the bulls ID, year letter and number. The off side ear has the bulls NLIS tag. Lot numbers will be paint branded on bulls for inspection day Friday 11th of September.Performance Information• Carcass Evaluated – genetic brothers to these sale bulls were processed on 13th July 2020. These results are available on page 4. In the past 2 ½ years we have processed nearly five hundred 100% Raff Angus Pedigree and Performance Recorded animals. These results totally contradict their $$ Index values and carcass EBV’s. It is insulting to have the majority of these sale bulls reported as less profitable by way of a graph on a piece of paper. Please refer to pages 4-5 to view actual carcass information on Raff Angus genetics processed this past twelve months. Further we strongly recommend that you visit www.raffangus.com.au – CARCASS DATA where you can view the carcass feedback information on every animal processed over the past 2 ½ years.• Sire Verified – all bulls have been Sire Verified.• Genomic Tested – all bulls have been HD50k tested. This information has been analysed and included within Breedplan.• Genetic Conditions – all bulls are free of any known genetic defects.• Raw Data - Ultrasound scanning data along with bulls actual scrotal and hip height measurements are located page 18.• EBV Information - Angus Group Breedplan EBV’s for all lots are published on page 19 for quick reference and again individually within each lot.• Structurally Assessed – these bulls were assessed by Roger Evans. Lots 6, 10, 14, 15, 24, 28, 30, 32, 35 & 40 were score 7 for front feet claw set. Full report available on request.

DeliveryBulls will be available for delivery immediately after the sale. Livestock carriers Falls Transport will be handling all of the transport and delivery arrangements – Lachie Falls 0429 826 342.

Sight unseen guaranteeWe expect under current COVID restrictions and personal safety concerns that a number of bulls will be purchased ‘sight unseen’. We are happy to assist with selections by offering an unbiased and honest assessment of the bulls. Those that purchase any lot sight unseen within this catalogue, that have discussed their selection with the vendor, are offered an unconditional money back guarantee of the lots purchase price if the purchaser is not satisfied

with their purchase within seven days of taking delivery of their bull.GuaranteeIn the unlikely event of a bull proving incapable of natural service within 12 months of purchase, provided it is not caused by injury or illness after the fall of the hammer, the vendor agrees to provide the purchaser with a satisfactory replacement if available or issue the purchaser with a credit equal to the purchase price minus salvage value that may be used to purchase another Raff Angus bull. A veterinarian certificate must be presented to Raff Angus within this 12-month time frame.

DisclaimerWe pride ourselves on our upfront, honest and sometimes critical appraisal of our cattle. We are always happy to provide assistance to those seeking guidance and our opinion. However, the final decision will always be that of the potential purchaser. The partners of Raff Angus are not in any way responsible for the final result or performance of any resulting purchase outside of our guarantee.

InsuranceWe strongly encourage successful purchasers to insure their bulls for loss of use from illness or injury and death. Generally, the highest risk for any mishaps occurring is within the first six-month period from purchase date while the animals are transported, adjust to their new environment and settle into their new animal groups.

Phone BiddingPhone bidding facilities will be available on sale day. It is essential to make contact with your preferred agent or the vendor prior to the sale to ensure that contact can be made on sale day. Contact Michael Glasser for any enquiries – 0403 526 702.

SALE INFORMATION

It is important to select for as much of any economically trait within a breed but as soon as we start to change another trait of importance specific to that breed we must stop there and

accept that this is as far as we can go.

RAFF ANGUS ‘PEDIGREE WITH A DIFFERENCE WITH PERFORMANCE ON THE HOOK’ BULL SALE 10

Raff Danny Boy D207 was imported as an embryo from the famous Hoff Scotch Cap Angus program and sold to K5X Angus Stud where it became one of their most successful Angus sires ever. His full brother Raff Distinction D197 was retained by us and considered one of our better bulls resulting from our USA Hoff embryo project. He was as wide based a sire as you could find with excellent feet and legs with length and strength of spine. He had incredible width and depth of hindquarter that usually you would only find in Euros. An outstanding son sells as Lot 2. This lots dam is of full O’Neill’s Angus genetics as she herself was also imported as an embryo from the United States.

Raff Empire E269 is a 10th generation Raff bred bull that traces back to our foundation cow, Sarum Doris 19th purchased in 1965. We consider Empire to be one of the greatest bulls we have ever bred. During his show career he clocked up over 20,000 kilometres in trucks going to shows where he won eleven Inter-breed Supreme Beef Exhibit titles. He broke tradition to most acclaimed show bulls by breeding the house down with over 320 progeny now recorded through our herd. We used him for many seasons with sons and daughters topping sales over years. We have numerous daughters in production exhibiting great maternal qualities. 1 son sells.

Raff Jovial J350 is the bull to use if you want to return width of hip and pin to your females with increased spring of rib, capacity and udder quality or to bring back the traditional head shape and muzzle strength, improve docility, get away from the narrowing Australian Angus gene pool or even to simply add extra muscle. He is a well proven sire who has just arrived to his new home – Mylong Angus Stud Young NSW where he will see his later years in stud duties. Jovial has been a brilliant stud sire for us. With his departure we will certainly be using some outstanding yearling sons. His dam was an extraordinary cow – bid in stature and heavy in weight.

Raff Knockout K20 was a sire that we used with success on both heifers and cows. He was one of the stand outs in his year and later shown as a junior. He was a bull of extreme length with extra smoothness of shoulder and natural muscle expression. His dam was ‘picture perfect’ when in her prime and still sound and an active breeder here with us now having made the trip south. Her 2017 born bull calf was a high selling private treaty son with a full genetic sister to him the following year recording one of the heaviest weaning weights. Knockout sons have extra hindquarter expression with jump muscle and bone.

RAFF ANGUS ‘PEDIGREE WITH A DIFFERENCE WITH PERFORMANCE ON THE HOOK’ BULL SALE 12

Raff Lieutenant L140 excels for muscle expression being wide topped, square set with excellent hindquarter definition. We imported just 10 straws of his sire from the United Kingdom after personally inspecting him – Peter Pershore. His Grandam Raff Doris S128 retired when over 20 years of age – even at that age her foot shape and structure were perfect. Lieutenant has numerous full sisters in production that are breeding exceptionally well with a full brother having also sold for stud duties. A son from this year’s sale group has been retained by us. He has 3 bulls in the sale by him – they are good performers with high yielding qualities.

Raff Lethal Weapon L156 has achieved success in our program as proving to be a true purpose sire. Sometimes we use sires that we don’t necessarily want our herd to replicate but want an injection of particular traits of importance. For Lethal Weapon it was – growth, weight and yield. Each of his progeny had added frame and always weighed heavier within their contemporary groups. We have had sons go through to carcasses hanging on hooks and despite being reported on paper as the least profitable animal by way of a graph they totally contradict this and are always the highest dollar valued carcass on the hook. He has proved that carcass weight and yield still drive profitability. His calves do weigh heavy at birth but despite his EBV they are born easily. He was imported by us as an embryo from the United Kingdom. Only several sons sell and they are all big performers.

Raff Lazarus L227 is the result from genetics out of the United States and the United Kingdom. His dam was one of six magnificent full sisters imported as embryos from Hoff Blackbird 5217 – bought by us at the Hoff Scotch Cap dispersion sale in 2006. These sisters have had a huge genetic influence in our herd. His sire was personally inspected by us when touring the UK where we subsequently imported semen from him. The genetic makeup of Lazarus is very different to mainstream. His daughters are super maternal types and shortlisted to breed a sire or two from. His sons that sell are very long and smooth fronted. Keep their daughters.

Raff Marshall M82 is a true beef bull with extra bone and muscle. He has always been an easy doing type with an abundance of natural fleshing. He is big footed with forearm strength and docility. Again, he contains no mainstream genetics. His dam is a powerful cow with tremendous neck extension and capacity. We wish we had used her sire – Raff Dakota D85 – a lot more as his daughters have bred very well. Having imported the limited amount of semen from his sire there are only 25 progeny in Australia – we have over half of them. Only several sons of Marshall sell.

RAFF ANGUS ‘PEDIGREE WITH A DIFFERENCE WITH PERFORMANCE ON THE HOOK’ BULL SALE 14

Raff Mustang M106 is a moderate framed sire that is exactly what the photo shows – square set, strong spined and very neat. From birth he carried extra thickness of top-line and a very expressive hindquarter. He is sired by UK import Penguin Henry and a half-brother to Marshall M82. Mustang has left us some very easy doing types with several of his spring 2019 born sons absolute crackers. We look forward to using Lethal weapon sons on his daughters. His sons that sell should be suitable for heifers.

Raff Magnum M165 was an absolute standout from birth who later went on to be a high seller at the Sydney Royal Feature Show and Sale last year selling to Greenlands Pastoral at Guyra. His pedigree is outstanding. We have used a full brother to him this autumn joining and have since purchased back 100 doses of semen from Magnum himself. His progeny are all of a kind – proud and upstanding with spring of rib, extra capacity and weight. His daughters are already looking like cows. He contains the two of our best homebred sires Raff Jovial and Raff Empire combined with some of the tried and proven Hoff Scotch Cap genetic lines.

Raff Neptune N4 contains some absolute power genetics within his pedigree. His sire, from Denmark, is big in stature and big in weight with tremendous strength of spine. His dam, sired by Raff Empire E269, is out of a flush sister to Raff Dictator D364 - a massive 64 inch direct Hoff Scotch Cap import that weighed over 1400 kilograms. Neptune himself was one of four bull calves within his contemporary that weighed over 500 kilos at 9 months of age with his weight the heaviest. The one lot to sell at the September 7th sale has tremendous muscle expression and individual performance.

SAV Seedstock 4838 was an obvious choice for us to use to further enhance our maternal strength. His dam and sires dam are the two most dominant and high earning cows within the Schaff Angus program – this cannot be ignored. If you add Madame Pride 0075 to SAV Resource then you have Seedstocks pedigree. He was the $235,000 bull Herbster Angus selected at the 2015 SAV sale. His phenomenal dam, SAV Blackcap May 4136, has generated over $10 million in progeny sales. Herbster are quoted as saying… ‘Seedstock has majestic maternal presence, is loaded with performance and is structurally superb. He is powerfully built and stunning from all angles with superior soundness and herd bull authority.’

RAFF ANGUS ‘PEDIGREE WITH A DIFFERENCE WITH PERFORMANCE ON THE HOOK’ BULL SALE 16

O’Neill’s FrontiersmanFrontiersman was the top performance bull calf in the 2012 O’Neill’s calf crop, in fact he was the heaviest yearling weight bull ever produced at O’Neill Angus. His dam is a daughter of O’Neill’s Expedition and a full sister to the sire of the Pen of 8 steers that were the high gaining, high feed efficiency combination pen of steers in the 2011 Tri- County Steer Futurity competing against over 9,000 steers. We used Frontiersman by AI particularly to produce full siblings to O’Neill’s Back Bardolier – lot 23 is such. His second son sells as Lot 1 – he is a real beef bull that is extremely docile and from our heaviest weighing cow on farm.

Penguin Henry M503 is a bull we have not physically inspected but were that impressed with his photo on the outside back cover of the Aberdeen Angus Journal that we made further enquiries and subsequently imported his semen. His pedigree is very safe and well proven. His progeny are moderate, easy doing and easy fleshing cattle that might not break any records but are consistently of a type. They all have added bone and tremendous backend width. We have used his sons with some outstanding progeny being produced. His only son that sells in our September 7th sale is an embryo calf out of the Hoff Scotch Cap dam who produced the 2019 Sydney Show and Sale record priced bull.

Nightingale Parson M667 was personally selected by us as a young bull from veteran UK breeder Willie Robertson of the famous Nightingale stud. Parson impressed us for his extreme length, flawless structure, balance and outlook. His 9-year-old sire was still active in the herd. We have used an outstanding son of Parson, Raff Lazarus L227, who has bred exceptionally well for us. Willie Robertson commented ‘Parson M667 is definitely the most stylish and structurally correct bull bred to date with his excellent legs and feet making his locomotion perfect, it is difficult to look past him. He is a bull that exuberates all the qualities that the future will require -length, carcase, nice bone, style, perfect calving shape and a pleasing personality.’

Despite selling in age order this is one of the better bulls to sell. He is an embryo calf out of our heaviest weighing cow in the herd sired by who we consider one of the better bulls to come out of the O’Neill’s herd in America. P165 has excellent foot and leg structure with a B- muscle pattern confirmed by his largest EMA measurement within this group. A standout from birth he is docile, weighs heavy with length and strength of spine. He simply excels for all traits important for profitable beef production.

Genetically very unique. P169 is the result of the importation as embryos from USA of both his dam, from O’Neill’s Angus, and his sire, from Hoff Scotch Cap Angus. We think so much of his pedigree we have retained and used a full brother. P169 has a strong head and muzzle with extra bone, good feet, good skin and natural thickness. His sire has genetically dominated over many years at K5X Angus in Queensland before being retired at 11 years old weighing 1310kg’s as sound as a bell.

This is the first son of Raff Neptune N4 to sell having been conceived when Neptune was just 10 months of age. The first of several sons sired by new AI sire within our program SAV Seedstock 4838. This lot is jam packed with maternal strength in every corner of his pedigree – keep his daughters. His dams’ sire, Shock n Awe, was viewed by us in the States. Unfortunately, we only have several daughters within our herd but both of them are breeding very well. P188 has good structural integrity, solid performance and tight sheath type.

This lot is a more moderate framed bull, thick in body type and tough in nature. Put him out on a station and he will do what bulls are meant to do – eat, service and survive. There is loads of longevity in his pedigree as his maternal granddam retired impeccably sound at 20 years of age. He does have a bit of arrogance but with a B- muscle score, structural integrity and in the right paddock his progeny will be stout, well-muscled and sound.

P195 was slow to recover from his crossing over Bass Strait but now getting back on track. His body shape and skin type along with muscle pattern lend himself ideally to be used as a terminal sire being best used on tropical type cows or the narrow shaped British females that have enough frame but need thickening up.

RAFF ANGUS ‘PEDIGREE WITH A DIFFERENCE WITH PERFORMANCE ON THE HOOK’ BULL SALE 24

A bull that is very hard to fault. He is good footed with all the right leg angles with a strong weight gain, width of top line and a B- muscle pattern. Occasionally he can be a bit stand offish but he is just being like his father who, despite his arrogance, was successfully shown as a junior before his move south. With his body type, bone pattern and muscle expression he proves that you don’t have to move to a Euro to get traits that some modern Angus have lost in the quest for marbling.

If you need to improve frame or if you want to add kilograms of weight to your weaners then this bull must be considered – he is one of the higher growth bulls and higher daily gain bulls on offer. Despite his negative fat EBV every one of his brothers processed to date have meet industry fat specifications. He will efficiently convert grass to beef and despite this bull and his steer brothers being reported as Less Profitable by way of a graph they have proved some of the most profitable carcasses hanging on the hook.

Jovial P212 is a very well-balanced beef bull with capacity and style. He has a big scrotal, big daily weight gain average, extra fat over his rump and an expressive muscle pattern resulting in a B- assessment. His sire is still active and sound as a 7-yearold. P212 does have slight swelling inside his offside leg as some high weight gain cattle can have. We back him as we know his depth of pedigree behind him and know what his progeny will perform like.

Do not confuse birth weight with calving ease – this lots progeny will be born easily as his shape is right. P224 is a magnificent beef bull. Big in weight, stature, scrotal, eye muscle and IMF% makes him one of the top all-round performers to sell. Docile in nature he excels in those traits that drive profitability – his progeny will weigh heavy, be efficient converters and produce heavy carcass weights of extreme yield. This bull excels for smoothness of shoulder and boasts more softness and coverage than all within this draft of sale bulls. He has really good structural integrity and will leave outstanding daughters, from cows or heifers, oozing of maternal qualities. The Duchess cow family resulted from the mating between two live import animals introduced by us from USA in the mid 1980’s. He has a good skin type.

If you need to improve your muscle pattern and increase your dressing percentages this bull should suit. His sire really marked his progeny as they are all of a type – big in stature, with presence and carry an abundance of red meat. His dam has proved a solid breeder in our program with nine progeny recorded. P246 should prove a survivor and a real calf getter. Genetics within his maternal pedigree have been exported to Thailand.

Seedstock P247 is a cracking bull – his progeny will suit any market and his daughters are a must to keep. He has good forearm strength and body shape with an eye-catching sire outlook. His dam is 12 years old and calving down here again this spring. In fact, she is out of the dam of show bull sensation Raff Empire E269. RAFF ANGUS ‘PEDIGREE WITH A DIFFERENCE WITH PERFORMANCE ON THE HOOK’ BULL SALE 30

A very sound structured bull with good feet, good leg structure and a solid body of beef. His dam was retired this year after maintaining a 379-day calving interval to 12 years of age. P248 is moderate in stature with a very even fat coverage recording even fat depth measurements for both rib and rump. His maternal pedigree goes to the heart of those good old Angus genetics that expressed extra capacity, bone and substance when compared to the new age high marbling types of today.

By using our own homebred bulls, we eliminate so much variance and add so much security of type. There is not an inconsistent or risky animal is this pedigree for performance or structural integrity - at all. P252 is very well balanced. He is very soft in both flesh and skin. There in no way he can be produce progeny less profitable as his coloured $Index graph shows. In fact, we can prove this as we have the carcass data on his brothers. It’s quite the opposite. Don’t overlook him.

We gave P255 his own name, Panda, at weaning as we had him short listed to use on heifers however did not as we had enough Blackbird blood within the intended heifer mob. He has tremendous neck extension and smoothness of shoulder with length of body and strength of spine. You will note that he has been linebred to Blackbird F14. This cow was my ‘once in a lifetime’ cow but typically something always happens to the best – she died form snake bite. F14 was big in stature and massive in weight.

RAFF ANGUS ‘PEDIGREE WITH A DIFFERENCE WITH PERFORMANCE ON THE HOOK’ BULL SALE 32

If you want something genetically different then this lot may interest. We personally know the O’Neill’s Angus program from the States and knew the value of their Royal Lady cow family. Six embryos were imported with this lots dam the result. We then saw O’Neill’s Black Bardolier being promoted by Jim O’Neill as one of their best bulls he had ever bred. This lot, Raff Frontiersman P259 is a full genetic brother to Black Bardolier. He is very quiet in nature and solid in performance.

Raff Jovial P275 would be best suited for big paddocks where they have to get out and cover a bit of country. He does not like pressure however he is too good a bull to leave out. He will sire heaps of calves and he will survive. He has softness of body and skin with smoothness of shoulder and extra length. He contains two of our Hoff import cow lines and the best of our Doris genetics.

Take the time to look at this bull’s pedigree. Whilst there are not any Raff cow families within, it was Raff Angus who independently imported all of the animals within this lot’s pedigree. Three of them as embryos from the South Dakota – F60, D167, D345. Semen sires Parson M667, who was inspected by us in the United Kingdom, and Prime Star 80 who was introduced by us from personal knowledge of the O’Neill’s Angus program. Plenty of growth by weight - not frame - in this bull as he is thick in body type and solid in shape. He is in some way similar to his sire who certainly had more bone, forearm strength and natural thickness than most bulls with fancy numbers. The Doris cow family shown in three corners of his pedigree all descend from the foundation Doris cow first purchased when Raff Angus was established in 1965.

RAFF ANGUS ‘PEDIGREE WITH A DIFFERENCE WITH PERFORMANCE ON THE HOOK’ BULL SALE 36

The industry must not leave behind animals of outcross pedigrees with generations of built in longevity and structural integrity for an animal simply sound on paper – there is so much more to breeding. Jovial P305 is a really well made and sound performing lot that is tight sheathed, good structured and quite natured. His progeny will be all of a kind and of good types.

Fat and marbling go hand in hand just like muscle and yield. P359 recorded one of the higher fat depth measurements and unsurprisingly measured the equal highest IMF% of 6.6. Again, he combines good body shape with structurally soundness, a tight sheath and docile nature. Both his dam’s parents and his sires dam were imported by us as embryos from the Hoff Scotch cows that we purchased in 2006.

P370 has always been a loose skinned type suggesting he still has a long way to go. His dam has had seven calves in seven years – one set of twins – for a 359-day calving interval. She is a big milking cow with good capacity and type. We wish we had more daughters by her sire, a ¾ brother to Hoff Limited Edition, as they have all bred the house down. This bull should breed good bullocks.

RAFF ANGUS ‘PEDIGREE WITH A DIFFERENCE WITH PERFORMANCE ON THE HOOK’ BULL SALE 42

We don’t advocate the use of bulls that produce very small calves at birth as the end result is that the daughters you retain by such bulls get smaller themselves which puts you on a downhill spiral in the quest for calving ease. Many decades ago, there was nowhere near the selection emphasis on this trait and heifers calved down easily back then. However, whilst this lot does not contain such genetics, I believe he will suit heifers. He is very smoothly made.

Almost saving the best until last. This bull is a ripper and my father is very angry I’m selling him!! His dam is one of our best and a donor in our herd whist his sire is an absolute outcross to mainstream Australian genetics. For anyone that wants to improve or maintain a good frame size but keep all traditional maternal qualities then don’t overlook this lot. His daughters will be magnificent and his sons will weigh heavy. We retain the right to collect semen, at our expense, for within herd use.

RAFF KNOCKOUT P396 SV

RAFF PARSON P412 SV

The only direct son of UK import AI sire Penguin Henry to sell at auction in Australia. The dam of P433 produced the new record priced bull at last year’s Sydney Angus Feature Show & Sale at $34,000. She resulted from the most potent breeding line we imported as embryos out of Hoff Scotch Cap cow purchase Blackbird 5217. This lot will breed the house down – remember he is the youngest to sell.

The Raff Family are sincerely grateful to those that have shown interest

in our program and supported us at this sale. We thank all purchasers

and underbidders for your competition.

Our thanks to Murk and Kate Schoen of Aarden Angus who have

managed these bulls on their farm for the past 2 ½ months. They have

treated them as their own and for that we are very grateful.
