In Association with
11-19 March 2015
Apeejay Svrán International Design and
Performing Arts Week
The Apeejay Education Society and Apeejay Stya University organised the Apeejay Svran International Design and Performing Arts Week, from March 11th -
19th 2015.
A truly global campus, Apeejay Stya University is home to students from over 20 countries. Their presence has brought a great confluence of cultures into the campus lending a multi-cultural and multilingual ambience to the university. Firing up the global spirit and in collaboration with our International partners Willem de Kooning Academy for Fine Arts and Design (WdKA), Rotterdam, Netherlands, Chengdu Textile College, China and CODARTS, Netherlands, the Design Week was organised in two fragments, at Apeejay Institute of Design (AID) New Delhi and Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA) Jalandhar, Punjab.
With stress on promoting Indian Crafts and Art Forms, The Design week aimed at providing a platform to diverse students of art and design to enrich their creativity, skill, and vision. It highlighted the role of design as a catalyst for innovation, linking creativity with practical industry, technology and society. Such a stage was prepared for students from India and abroad to hone their skills and learn more techniques and arts from their counterparts in other countries.
During this week long program, in co-creation teachers and students of these institutes from all over the world worked on innovative curricula and programs by introducing ‘ design thinking’ and creative skills unique to their own country. Extensive workshops on Indian Crafts like Workshops on Indian Crafts like Zardozi, Chikankari,Kutch Mirrorwork, Applique, Patchwork, Wood Engraving, Costume Jewelry, Calligraphy/ Typographical Design etc and Classical Performing Art encouraged students to witness the contrasts in design, patterns and art forms in their own country and India. Attending classes and workshops with their Indian counterparts, traveling to heritage sites, working with a range of local industries and getting hands on exposure on real time projects, gave the participants a glimpse of the diversity, progress and development of Indian Design & performing arts. Jamming sessions with classical singers from Netherlands and India, dutch students playing the tabla, Indo China Fashion show, Dutch and Chinese students making
punjabi jootis and embroidering Zardosi on fabrics saw the realization of the objective with which the Design Week was organized.
Regular interactions with biggies from the Fashion, Interior, Autombile, engineering and other realms of the Design field laid the foundation to help industry and academia in working together to push the boundaries and form a powerful team capable of driving innovation and economic growth. A fascinating panorama of crafts, cuisine, cultural performances, traditional art forms, rural settings and the ethnicity of India found a grand stage during the Design Week.
This initiative will encourage a better understanding and appreciation of contemporary India, foster closer ties with the youth capital of other countries, enhance their engagement and help to explore possibilities for further work or study in India. On return these students will act as "ambassadors of global Design" promoting closer and flexible understanding of art, design and culture between India and their native countries.
