A.P.I The American Petroleum Institute (API), is the largest U.S trade association for the oil and gas industry ,claiming to represent around 400 corporations engaged in oil production, extraction, distribution, and other aspects of the industry. API is based in Washington, D.C. and has offices in 27 state capitals.

API released its first standard in 1923, intended to promote interchangeability of oil field equipment throughout the industry.

Today, over 900 API standards serve as the basis for API quality programs covering production material and lubricants, and certification programs for storage tanks, pressure vessels, and piping inspectors.

They also publish recommended practices, research reports, and specifications on pipelines, valves, offshore structures ,oil spill response procedures, environmental protection, exploration, facility management and much more.

API in the field of oil & natural gas

API works under the area of

exploration & production sectors ,

Transporting oil and natural gas ,

fuel and refinery sector and .

also in understanding the crude oil and product market.

API in the field of Environment ,Health & Safety In this field API mainly works to enhance environment principles ,clean air, climate change, clean water ,health and safety ,energy efficiency and recycling ,process safety and environmental performance .

API is dedicated to continuous efforts to improve the compatibility of their operations with the environment while economically developing energy resources and supplying high quality products and services to consumers.

For clean air, a act called Clean Air Act (CAA) was passed in 1967. The CAA was first passed as the 1967 Air Quality Act. The 1967 Act established the concept of air quality control regions which was amended time to time to include various other thing related to air quality. It was lastly amended in 1990.

In March 2011 the board of directors of the American Petroleum Institute approved the creation of the Center for Offshore Safety to address industry safety and environmental performance. This action follows recommendations made by the Presidential Oil Spill Commission investigations in response to the BP Deepwater Horizon / Macondo oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that occurred in 2010.

Safety Data Sheets presents a summary of how petroleum industry companies develop and distribute Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) for purposes of hazard communication.  An SDS is a written document that describes the properties and hazards of a material and is used to transmit hazard information to employers and employees

API in the field of Publication, Standards & Certification Program API publications help users improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of their operations, comply with legislative and regulatory requirements, and safeguard health, ensure safety, and protect the environment.

Some of the API publications are in the field of Exploration & Production, petroleum Measurement Publications, Marketing ,Pipeline Transportation, Refining, Safety and Fire Protection, Health and Environmental Issues Publications.

API also defines and drafts standards for measurement for manufactured products such as: Precision thread gauges ,Plain plug and ring gauges ,Thread measuring systems ,Metrology and industrial supplies ,Measuring instruments, Custom gauges, Precision machining and grinding, ISO 17025 registered calibration and in many more areas.

API 610 is the specification for centrifugal pumps, API 675 is the specification for controlled volume positive displacement pumps, API 677 is the standard for gear units and API 682 governs mechanical seals.

API has entered petroleum industry nomenclature in a number of areas:API gravity:- a measure of the density of petroleum ,

API number:-a unique identifier applied to each petroleum exploration or production well drilled in the United States

API unit:-a standard measure of natural gamma radiation measured in a borehole.

API also runs certification programs to boost confidence in the industry by various certification program such as API Monogram Program, API’s Individual Certification Programs (ICP), Process Safety Site Assessment Program (PSSAP)

API in the field of events & training

API-U is dedicated to providing excellence in petroleum industry training ,it also enables participants to maintain professional competency and meet the ever changing statutory requirements, as well as networking opportunities.

API also provides API e Learning courses that are the perfect way to continue your professional development on your own schedule. It also provide courses in mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, instrumentation and control and safety.

API organizes seminars, workshops, conferences and symposia on public policy issues through API University.

API in the field of campaigning

"Energy Citizens-“The group has loudly protested the decision to have greenhouse gas emissions regulated under the Clean Air Act. API members include Chevron, Conoco Phillips, Exxon Mobil, Halliburton and Shell.

Vote 4 Energy -The Vote 4 Energy Campaign which argues that "A Vote For Energy is a vote for more jobs, higher government revenues and greater energy security." the site features a state by state breakdown of how states could be impacted by adopting their policies.

Standards development process

API is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

Openness, balance, consensus, due process

– Periodic program audits (conducted by ANSI)

Transparent process

Any interested party can participate on committees and comment on API standards

All comments must be considered

One vote per company

Page 13: Api

Standards development process

Developed by consensus (does not mean unanimity)

Committee balance between users, manufacturers and contractors/consultants

Standards developed using ANSI-approved API Procedures for Standards Development

API corporate membership is not a requirement for participation on API standards committees

Page 14: Api

Use of API StandardsNational Technology Transfer and Advancement Act (NTTAA) NTTAA requires Federal Agencies to use voluntary consensus standards and encourages Use of API Standards participation in the standards development process

API standards are cited in regulations by the various agencies including the OSHA, EPA, DOT and BOEMRE per the NTTAA

100 API standards are cited over 270 times in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations

API Standards also widely cited by States

184 API standards are cited over 3300 times in state regulations
