The Kansas Notable Books List
is the annual recognition of 15
outstanding titles by Kansas
authors or about Kansas. It is
the only honor for Kansas
books by Kansans, highlighting
our lively contemporary writ-
ing community and encourag-
ing readers to enjoy some of
the best writing of the authors
among us.
A committee of KCFB Affili-
ates, Fellows, and authors of
previous Notable Books identi-
fies these titles from among
those published the previous
year, and the State Librarian
makes the selection for the
final List. A reception and
medal awards ceremony honor
the books and their authors and
illustrators.

The Dust Bowl: An Illustrated History by
Dayton Duncan and Ken Burns
In this riveting chronicle,
which accompanies the docu-
mentary, the authors capture
the profound drama of the
American Dust Bowl of the 1930s. Terrifying
photographs, along with firsthand accounts,
bring to life this heart-wrenching catastrophe
of the Great Plains.
Wide Open by Larry Bjornson
Based on actual events, Wide Open is a novel
of family and coming of age set in 1871 Abi-
lene, a place where good and evil are so even-
ly matched that no one knows which will
triumph. Will Merritt finds himself torn be-
tween the Texas cowboys he and his friends
idolize and the migrant settlers whose farms
threaten to crowd out the cattle. Recently
hired marshal, Wild Bill Hickok, struggles to
control the streets of Abilene.

Rodeo Queen Story Time
The Children and Teen’s Services department held a story time with Miss Rodeo America Chenae Shiner and Miss Rodeo K-State Lindy Singular.
Chenase Shiner was crowned Miss Rodeo Ameri-ca on December 12, 2012 in Las Vegas after a week long pageant. She will travel more than 100,000 miles during her reign represent-ing Miss Rodeo America and the Professional Rodeo Cow-boy’s Association.
Chenae proudly says that rodeo is her favorite sport! She truly feels at home on
their ranch where branding or herding 600 head of cat-tle can’t be beat!
Lindy Singular was crowned Miss Rodeo K-State in Feb-ruary 2013. Throughout her reign she will be traveling the state of Kansas to pro-mote Kansas State Universi-ty and the sport of rodeo. Lindy spent her timing growing up riding horses on her family ranch. Born a triplet, she began riding at just two years of age along with her two brothers, who share their love for the west-ern lifestyle. She is currently a senior pursing a degree in Agriculture Economics with
a minor in Animal Science at Kansas State University.
Both queens read stories followed by questions and pictures. Participants made crafts and ate ice cream do-nated by Mr. K’s Express.

Children and Teen Services
Friends of the Library
I find it an honor to live in a community that recognizes the importance of reading. As the Children’s Librarian at the Abilene Public Library, I am an eyewitness to the fact that the youth of today still read and value books. During the course of the 2013 Sum-mer Reading Program, 552 youth logged 5,833 hours of reading time and had a collective attendance of over 1,600 at our 36 “Dig Into
Reading” programs.
Thank you to all that made our Summer Reading Program a success. We could not have
done it without you.
