The APMAA 2018 (14th) Annual Conference will be held on October 29th -November 1st ,
2018 in Tokyo. The conference venue is the Waseda Campus of Waseda University and
Rihga Royal Hotel Tokyo located in the campus.
Theories and proposals in management and accounting must be inextricably tied to the
actual organizational situations and environment that they are intended to serve. This posture,
the tradition and identity of APMAA, enables academics and practitioners to provide society
useful solutions. The theme of APMAA 2018 is “The Forefront of Management Accounting:
Research and Practices” (a tentative theme).
As can be seen in this issue of our newsletter, a variety of events of APMAA 2018 can
provide you the latest insights in many areas of research and practice in management and
accounting, in addition to opportunities to present your research outcomes.

Mr. Nishiyama has extensive experience in Accounting, Finance, Internal Control,
M&A, and Management in Hitachi group companies in Japan and the United
States since he joined Hitachi in 1979. His work experience includes the followings: Director,
Hitachi America, Ltd. (San Francisco); CFO, Hitachi PC Corporation (San Jose); Senior Director,
Hitachi Global Technologies, Inc. (San Jose), General Manager, Finance Department, Hitachi, Ltd.

Shortly after graduating with a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering
from Shizuoka University in Shizuoka, Japan in March 1975, Mr. Ogino joined a Japanese leading
trading company, Itochu Corporation in Tokyo, Japan. With 29 years’ experience in ITOCHU
Corporation, he occupied the professional, managerial and executive positions in the business
management in Japan, Middle East, South East Asia, USA, and Australia. During his employment
with ITOCHU Corporation, he earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the
University of Chicago in Illinois in June 1984. In July 2004, he joined Akebono Brake Industry
CO., LTD in Saitama, Japan. He has served in executive positions in various segments; corporate
planning, administration, human resources, finance, accounting, investor relations, public relations,
after market, and also top management of operations in the USA, Europe and Asia. Now, he focuses
on Finance & Accounting as CFO.
Ryohei Yanagi, Ph. D. Chief Financial Officer, Eisai Co., Ltd.

Dr. Yanagi holds a Ph.D. in economics from Kyoto University, Japan. He also
obtained an MBA with distinction from Thunderbird Graduate School of Global Management,

Arizona, USA. In connection with corporate value enhancement activities in Japan, he has been one
of the drafting members of METI’s “Ito Review” (Japanese version of Kay Review) and was
instrumental in establishing the “ROE 8% guideline”. He has also gathered evidence and advised
the TSE on corporate disclosure and governance to promote improvement of the earnings guidance
system and IFRS adoption and disclosure. He is also a member of the ICGN Disclosure and
Transparency Committee since September 2017. He was selected as the Best CFO in Japan’s
healthcare sector in 2016 and 2017 by Institutional Investor whereas ranked in the Top 10 CFOs by
Forbes Japan for the second consecutive year as well. In addition, he was granted the Best Teaching
Award 2017 by President Kamata, Waseda University. Dr. Yanagi has also written and published
many books and theses on corporate governance, corporate finance, and investor relations in Japan.
His new book, Corporate Governance and Value Creation in Japan, will be published from
Springer in May.

Conference
APMAA 2018 Parallel sessions will be held on October 30th (Monday) and 31st (Tuesday)
at the Waseda Campus of Waseda University, Tokyo. It is a great honor to hold the 14th
APMAA conference in Japan.
As we agree, Asian countries have become the major growth engine of the development of
global economy. We all admit that management accounting plays an important role to create
corporate value. Companies in Asia have created various kinds of striking management
accounting systems. The main theme of APMAA 2018 conference “The Forefront
Management Accounting: Research and Practices” means that the year conference will focus
on practices of Asian companies and try to develop fundamental management accounting

theory in the parallel session. In this sense, APMAA can contribute to future management
accounting research. We believe that presentations in the parallel sessions will be the starting

The Paper Submission Deadline is scheduled for July 10th, 2018. The submitting authors
will be notified of the acceptance decision by September 1st, 2018. All submissions are
subject to a double-blind review process organized by the Review Committee consisting of a
panel of leading scholars.

Your paper for the APMAA 2018 should be submitted

the paper submission site after April 1st , 2018).
Formatting
All manuscripts should be in Times New Roman, font size 12, double–spaced with an
abstract of 200-300 words. Include up to 5 keywords. An abstract should be on a separate
page immediately preceding the text.
Manuscripts should be as concise as the subject and research method permit. The length of
text should be over 5,000 but not exceed 10,000 words.
All papers will be double blind reviewed. To promote anonymous review, authors should
not identify themselves directly or indirectly in their paper. Single authors should not use the
editorial “we.” Referencing should follow the APA style (Refer to http://www.apastyle.org).
The cover page should contain the title of the paper (all bold capitals), the author’s name (first
name, initial(s), and family name), title and affiliation, fax and phone numbers, and email
address.
Please indicate clearly the corresponding author.

1) All submitted articles should report original, previously unpublished research results,
experimental or theoretical.
2) The final papers must be submitted before the deadline and the version of your submission

Greeting from Shoichiro Hosomi, APMAA 2018 Doctoral Colloquium
Chair
APMAA 2018 Doctoral Colloquium will be held on Monday, October 29th at
the Waseda Campus of Waseda University, Tokyo, in conjunction with the
APMAA 2018 Conference.
The doctoral colloquium provides a unique opportunity for doctoral students to develop
their research ideas, to learn about the challenges of conducting research and building a
successful academic career, and to broaden their professional network. The colloquium has
the following objectives:
・Provide a setting where students can present their work and meet other students,
・Provide feedback on students' current research and guidance on future research directions,
・Offer each student comments and fresh perspectives on their work from researchers and
students outside their own institution,
・Promote the development of a supportive community of scholars and a spirit of
collaborative research, and
・Contribute to the conference goals through interaction with other researchers and

conference events.
At the APMAA 2018 Doctoral Colloquium, students can receive high-quality feedback
from external reviewers and directly interact with peers, exchange ideas, discuss concepts,
and establish (in) formal cooperation with various research groups. Doctoral students and
candidates at all stages are welcome to submit a thesis-position paper, but preference will be
given to students in the earlier stages of their doctoral work. You are welcome to participate
in this Colloquium.
Participants (doctoral students and candidates) are hereby invited to present and discuss
their preliminary results or work-in-progress. They are expected to give short and informal
presentations of their work during the Colloquium, to be followed by a panel-like discussion.
The discussants comprise of a group of international professors.
Doctoral students interested in participating in the doctoral colloquium should submit a
single PDF file consisting of:
1. An introductory letter in which you indicate what you wish to obtain from the doctoral
colloquium and what you will be bringing to the doctoral colloquium.
2. A one-page research statement on the research field you will pursue. If you are at the
doctoral dissertation stage, this statement should focus on the dissertation.
3. Your CV.
4. A letter of recommendation from your primary dissertation advisor, who should state what
you could contribute as well as gain from the doctoral consortium.
5. Your paper (The text should be about 4,000- 8,000 words.).

The deadline for full paper submissions is July 10th, 2018.
The notification of acceptance is September 1st, 2018.

The colloquium chairs will arrange the selection of the accepted papers using a peer review
process. The accepted papers will be published in the Doctoral Colloquium proceedings. At
least one of the authors should register for the conference before the deadline of conference
registration (September 15th, 2018), and attend as well as present the paper in the conference.
Otherwise, the paper will not be included in the conference program and proceedings.
Notification:
1) The first author should be a doctoral student who is mainly responsible for conducting the
research on the respective topic.
2) Names of the authors are preceded by: first author and, where applicable, supervisor.
3) The author should register (pay the participation fee) for the conference before the deadline

We invite you to participate in identifying and tackling a new frontier of Management
Accounting by organizing Special Sessions and/or Workshops for APMAA 2018. The
proposed sessions and workshops expected to be related to the APMAA 2018 theme,” The
Forefront of Management Accounting: Research and Practices.” However other new streams
in research like “Implementation of Cloud Technology,” “Manufacturing Execution
Management,” “Cockpit for Top Management Decision Makings,” etc. are welcome also.
You will be assigned a “one and half an hour” timeslot (time bucket) in the parallel
sessions. The proposal for the Special Session or the Workshop should clearly state session
title, session objective/ summary, targeted audiences, and names and associations of a session
coordinator, presenters and discussants (Susumu Ueno).

Waseda University (早稲田大学 Waseda Daigaku) is a Japanese private research university
in Tokyo. Founded in 1882 as the Tōkyō Senmon Gakkō by Ōkuma Shigenobu, the school
was formally renamed Waseda University in 1902.
Waseda is organized into thirty-six departments: thirteen undergraduate schools and twenty-
three graduate schools. As of May 2016, there were 42,860 undergraduate students and 8,269
graduate students. The Waseda University Library is collectively one of the largest libraries in
Japan and currently hold some 4.5 million volumes and 46,000 serials.
Waseda consistently ranks among the most academically selective and prestigious
universities in Japanese university rankings. In 2015–2016, Waseda ranked 212th in the QS
World University Rankings.
Waseda has graduated many notable alumni, including seven Prime Ministers of Japan,
many CEOs, including Tadashi Yanai, the CEO of UNIQLO, Nobuyuki Idei, the former CEO
of Sony, Takeo Fukui, the former President and CEO of Honda, Lee Kun-hee, the Chairman
of Samsung Group, Mikio Sasaki, the former Chairman of Mitsubishi, and Hiroshi Yamauchi,
former President of Nintendo.
