Gevgelija Recycles!

Did you know that it takes between 450 to 700 years for a plastic bottle to decom-

pose, and nearly every piece of plastic EVER made still exists today. Recycling is the

simplest and easiest way to preserve the Earth’s valuable and finite resources. Gev-

gelija started recycling the plastic bottles, thanks to a grant from US AID for the

“Gevgelija Plastic Recycling program” made from Piece Corps volunteer Kristen Halseth

and Apollonia Foundation. The municipality

of Gevgelija already has eight bins located

around the community labeled “Plastic

Only” with two holes on the top designed to

fit plastic bottles, but the local government

reports that any plastic deposited into these

bins currently goes to the landfill with the

rest of the garbage. This project will take

advantage of the resources already avail-

able and use six of the “Plastic Only” bins

for recycling plastic bottles.

This program includes coopera-

tion between the two primary schools in

Gevgelija and other citizens of Gevgelija

who will fill the containers with plastic,

the local government and public enter-

prise “Komunalec” who will empty and

transport the plastic containers, the local

company called Bliznak Kom who will buy

off the plastic and Apollonia Foundation

who will monitor and use the income from the sold plastic for expanding this program.

The goal of this project is to improve the ecological conditions of Gevgelija and

to educate children and all residents of Gevgelija about recycling plastic. Thanks to this

program the community started it’s own initiative for collecting also paper twice a

week, from bigger companies that have more paper waste, and they are building new

containers just for plastic and paper which will be set up on several location of our

town. Now all we have to do is recycle.

Concerts of classical music in Apollonia

The classical music program “Gevgelija Spring 2010” continues with new concerts. In April were held two more concerts. On the 13th of May we had “Night of famous opera melodies and duos” with the postgraduates from the class of prof. Marija Muratovska - Naumovska from the Faculty for music in Skopje. The unforgettable arias of Mo-zart, Puccini, Verdi, Sans, De Lib, Z. Masne were performed by Elikona Husaj and Dielza Sulejmani (mezzo - so-prano), Bela Lugaci, Adelina Taci, Delina Hajra (soprano), Ivan Naumovski (baritone) and prof. Elena Atanasovska on piano. The drama, the poetics and the expression of the feelings were so effective which was one more recogni-tion of the talent that these artists have and have achieved with their performances through Europe. Adelina Taci has a significant appearance with the world known tenor Carreras on her career record, and Beca Lugaci has been per-forming in Paris, France and Italy this year and she is preparing for concert in Austria. On the beging of the concert their professor Marija Muratovska expressed her gratitude because the Gevgelija music scene is always open for artists from Macedonia and abroad, like in this case with her students that come from Prishtina, Kosovo.

On the 27th of April the classical music public of Gevgelija had the pleasure to hear guitar-flute duo concert in performance of the profes-sors Tanja Jankova (guitar) and Silvana Culeva - Atanasova (flute). Peaces from Mozart, Leu, Schile, Schubert, Piazzolla were performed in the program. Silvana Atanasova during her 23 years career had per-formed 3 times as soloist with the Macedonian Philharmonic, had played with the Revial orchestra of the Macedonian Radio Television, and made a lot of concerts for the local public. She established the quarter flute ”Sirinks”, and is an author of few children musical scenar-ios, among them “Story for the planet Musicland”. Jankova mastered her instrument in 2001 and is the winner of the first price on the State competition for guitar and second price for chamber music (1993). So

far she has had many concerts in Skopje and the other towns of Macedonia, and recorded many videos for MRTV with cooperation of the French studio “Music entertainment”.

The classical music concerts that are in the program “Gevgelija spring and Gevgelija music autumn 2010” are organized by Apollonia Foundation and supported by the Ministry of culture.

stillness and dynamic” says the
