Dear Brothers & Sisters, It is a joy to greet you in the midst of Sum-mer 2017! All the preparations for the Apos-tolate’s 39th year at the Tommy Bartlett Show are well under way. I hope you have August 25, 2017 on your calendar and that you will be able to enjoy a won-derful day. The staff of the Bart-lett show welcome us every year, and I am so grateful to the many volunteers who make it a good experience for all who participate. Of course we can-not predict the weather, but we prayerfully hope for a beautiful day! Msgr. Thomas Campion began the Aposto-late 50 years ago per the request of then Bishop Cletus O’Donnell. I have been privi-leged to serve as the Director since July, 2011 striving to continue the ministry Msgr. TC began. It has been a special blessing to have welcomed Deacon Jim Hoegemeier and Kellie O’Brien to the Apostolate staff as full-time employees. Together we are com-mitted to continuing and broadening the ministry of the Apostolate throughout the Diocese of Madison. To this end, and after much consultation, we are introducing a new name for the Apostolate that expresses the ministry at

this current time. Please know, the purpose, the goals, and expanded work of the Aposto-late continue, but with a new name – Apos-tolate for Persons with Disabilities-Diocese of Madison – and a new logo. The logo is a simple hand of Love, Care and Com-passion, with the Cross at the center of the

circle expressing this special minis-try of the Church that is centered in Jesus Christ. As the name and logo become more familiar, may the Apostolate contin-ue to bring the message of Christ’s love and support to all as we are one family in the Church. I hope to cele-

brate with you at the Dells on August 25th, and be assured of my prayers for you.

About Ordinary Time

In the liturgical year of the Church, we are now in

the period known as Ordinary Time. Other times of

the liturgical year focus on particular aspects of the

mystery of Christ. In the season of Advent, we pre-

pare for the birth of Jesus, when God became incar-

nate. During the season of Lent, we seek conversion

of our hearts as we prepare to celebrate the fulfill-

ment of the Paschal Mystery. Throughout the year,

there are various feasts that are celebrated.

The introduction to the Roman Missal, the book

that provides the specific guidelines for celebrating

Mass throughout the liturgical year, states that Ordi-

nary Time is the period of the liturgical year when

“the mystery of Christ itself is honored in its fullness,

the color of this

liturgical season

is green, a reminder of the life and growth in our

spiritual lives that comes from embracing the full-

Green County Fair will give free carnival rides to in-

dividuals with a disability/special needs and their

families on July 21st from 10a-12p in Monroe, WI.

Parish Inclusion Advocates

Starting this summer, the Apostolate is seeking individuals from throughout the diocese to serve as an advo-

cate for inclusion of people with disabilities at their parish and a contact person for the Apostolate’s activi-

ties.

To nominate a person at your parish, please write a brief letter to the Apostolate explaining why they would

be a great advocate for people with disabilities. Recommendations directly from pastors will be considered

first.

Once selected, the individuals will attend a training session and a monthly phone touch base with the Apos-

tolate staff to ensure they have the support they need.

Please consider nominating someone or talk to your pastor if you would like to take on this role at your par-

ish.

Debra Krebs, Director of the SAA Reading Insti-

tute, will give a presentation on Dyslexia and the

program the SAA Reading Institute uses to provide

participating students the help they need to be-

come successful readers. The SAA Reading Insti-

tute, with the proud support of The Apostolate for

Persons with Disabilities and the Office of Catholic

Schools, is committed to offering this program to

every Catholic School in our Diocese. All students

deserve a great Catholic education with complete

access to the Gospels. The SAA Reading Institute

needs volunteers. Snacks will be provided. Any

Dyslexia Local Information Sessions

August 11-13: Deaf Young People Retreat

Join other young adults for a weekend in beautiful Waukesha, WI at the Schoenstatt Retreat Center. There will be opportunites to grow in faith through prayer and presentations as well as leisure activities to have some fun and enjoy getting to know other deaf Catholic young adults! Blessed Margaret Events: Ongoing

The Apostolate will provide a $500 grant to parishes

for a luncheon to meet and learn about the accom-

plishments of people with disabilities in their parish.

The next event will be at St. Olaf, DeForest & St. Jo-

seph, East Bristol on August 13, 2017.

Catechesis of the

Good Shepherd

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

creates a space where children can

learn about and encounter Jesus in

their own hearts. It is easily

adapted for children with intellec-

tual and developmental disabilities

because it is designed to let every

child progress at their own pace

based on their interests.

This year, several parishes in the

Madison area are starting or pre-

paring to start to offer Catechesis

of the Good Shepherd as an option

for religious education of the chil-

dren in their parish.

Kellie O’Brien, the project manager

for the Apostolate, attended the

first week of Level 1 Training. Lev-

el 1 prepares catechists to work

with 3-6 year old children.

Unlike traditional religious educa-

tion, Catechesis of the Good Shep-

herd is cyclical, reintroducing core

themes every year. It seeks to focus

on the essentials and to give chil-

dren the tools (words, gestures,

experiences) to fully participate in

the liturgical life of the Church.

To attend a Catechesis of the Good

Shepherd Class, a child will go to

an atrium. An atrium is a special

room that is designed for children

to come and work with materials

to learn about their faith.

Catechists strive to create an envi-

ronment that is special and set

apart for prayer and learning

about Jesus. Materials are made to

be child sized by people in each

parish.
