How much summer fun can you cram into 10 days? Apple Valley’s annual Freedom Days celebration answers that question June 25-July 4 with a week and a half jam-packed with entertainment, food and family-ori-ented activities. The festival kicks off Friday, June 25, with the Dancin’ & Cruisin’ classic car show and rock concert at Bogart’s Place nightclub and concludes with a spectacu-lar fireworks display at dusk on July 4 in Johnny Cake Ridge Park. In between these two marquee events there will be plenty to do for people of all ages and interests, including the Cub Foods Family Fun Night, Kids Fishing Derby and Freedom Days Fun Run. Dancin’ & Cruisin’, now in its 11th year, will feature a classic car show, food conces-sions and a business vendor fair from 5 p.m. to midnight in the parking lot outside Bog-art’s Place. Music will be provided through-out the evening by DJ Sounds, along with a concert by ’80s rock tribute band Hairball and opening act Ladies of the 80s. If you go, expect a crowd. Last year’s

Event focuses on fun

Dancin’ & Cruisin’ drew about 2,000 peo-ple and featured 200-some classic cars in the parking lot at Bogart’s. Admission to the car show and business vendor fair is free, but there’s a $10 cover charge for the Hairball concert; ticket sales for the concert are the primary fundraiser for Freedom Days. “All the gate money goes right back into the festival,” said Pat Schesso, Freedom Days chairperson. “We really depend on this event to make it a good festival.”

Music, sports & more Freedom Days takes an idyllic turn at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 27, with Music in the Park in Hayes Park. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic dinner to the free, family-geared concert by the Minnesota Over 60 Band, which spe-cializes in popular music from the ’40s and ’50s. A host of athletic contests are lined up during Freedom Days: a disc golf tourna-ment for middle and high school students (Alimagnet Park, June 28); a juniors tennis tournament (Apple Valley Sports Arena, June 28-29); and 2- and 5-mile “fun runs” (Hayes Park, July 4). Registration informa-tion for all of these events is on the Freedom Days website, www.avfreedomdays.com. The Apple Valley Teen Center is getting in on the festival action with an adapted teen dance (a social mixer for teens with

disabilities) June 25; a skateboard demo/contest July 1; and a Battle of the Bands on July 3 for teen bands in grades 9-12 in which adolescent rockers will battle it out to win prizes and qualify for the Dakota County Fair and Minnesota State Fair. Bands can register by calling (952) 953-2300.

For the kids Children ages 5-11 are invited to cast a line into Lac Lavon during the Kids Fish-ing Derby from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 30. Prizes will be awarded in various categories; bait will be provided, and par-ticipants can bring their own poles or use one provided by the Minnesota Valley In-Fisherman Club. You don’t have to register for the fishing derby, but organizers would like to get a sense of what the turnout will be and are taking RSVPs at (952) 953-2300. A carnival featuring Midway rides, games of chance and food concessions will be held three days, July 2-4, in Johnny Cake Ridge Park. The second day of the carni-val also includes Family Fun Night – a pe-rennial Freedom Days favorite featuring a petting zoo, pony rides, Kids Parade and Apple Valley police car and fire truck tours – from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 3. There’s no admission fee to the carnival, but there is a small charge for the rides, food and some of the other activities.

Fired up for the 4th Freedom Days culminates in a full-day

of festivities July 4 at various sites through-out the city. The immensely popular Fourth of July parade starts at 1 p.m. at Pennock Avenue and Fireside Drive and works its way to Apple Valley High School. Because curbside space for parade spec-tators is such a hot commodity, the Apple Valley City Council has passed an ordi-nance restricting the placement of blankets and chairs along the parade route (to re-serve curbside spots) to 24 hours before the start of the parade. “At one point not to long ago, people had their spots marked two days before the parade,” Schesso said. “I thought it was pretty neat, but we can’t allow it be-cause it hampers the city’s walking and

biking system.” In addition to the parade, American Le-gion Post 1776 is hosting a chicken barbe-cue, beer wagon and raffles throughout the day at the post at 14521 Granada Drive. “It’s good spot to stop and have a bit to eat before the parade, or stop over after the parade,” Schesso said. Johnny Cake Ridge Park will be awash in festivities on the Fourth, with a family carnival from noon to 10 p.m., pre-fire-works party featuring a DJ and food ven-dors from 6 to 10 p.m., and fireworks dis-play at dusk. The Freedom Days schedule of events is at www.ThisweekLive.com and www.av-freedomdays.com.
