Any person born outside New Zealand on or ater 1 January 1978 and whose mother or ather wasa New Zealand citizen otherwise than by descent at the time o that persons birth or adoption.

Who may be registered as a

New Zealand citizen by descent?

In general, to be a New Zealand citizen otherwise than by descent your mother or ather will havebeen either born in New Zealand or will have received a grant o New Zealand citizenship beforeyou were born. There are other ways that a person can be a New Zealand citizen other wise than bydescent. The Citizenship Oice can provide more inormation concerning these.

How do I know if my mother or

father was a New Zealand citizen

otherwise than by descent at the

time of my birth?

Having your citizenship by descent registered conrms that you are a New Zealand citizen by descent.It also provides evidence o your citizenship or passport and other purposes.

What does registration do?

Processing an application takes 20 working days on receipt o a complete and correct application,except or overseas adoptions. Please note the application is not correct until any required documentsare received and translations are completed. Extra time should also be allowed or delivery to and romthe Citizenship Ofce. Applicants are advised not to conrm travel arrangements until they receive theirpassport documents.

How long will it take?

A person who has been adopted outside New Zealand by a parent who is a New Zealand citizen

otherwise than by descent may be a New Zealand citizen by descent. The adoption must ulil severalcriteria. The Citizenship Oice o the Depar tment o Internal Aairs will be able to provide you withinormation concerning the criteria and any other documents required.

Was I adopted?

All documents not in English must be translated and original documents must be sent in with theEnglish translation. We will accept oicial translations o documents into English by the issuingGovernment agency or a New Zealand diplomatic post. In addition, we will accept translations madeby a court in the country o origin i they have been authenticated by that country s diplomatic postin New Zealand. International language documents (multi lingual) are available rom many countries.

I you need an English translation, the Department can arrange this through the Departmento Internal Aairs Translation Service. Please include NZ$50.00 / AU$45.00 / GBP20.00 or eachdocument that requires translation. The Citizenship Ofce will organise an ofcial translation, which willbe returned to you with your documents.

Alternatively, you may contact one o the agencies approved by the Citizenship Oice to providetranslations. A list o these can be ound on our website www.citizenship.govt.nz or you can contactour oice.

Documents in a languageother than English

The registration o your citizenship conirms and provides evidence o your status as a New Zealandcitizen by descent. It does not enable you to pass on New Zealand citizenship to any childrenthat you may have who are born outside New Zealand.

You may wish to contact the Citizenship Oice to determine your eligibility to apply or a grant oNew Zealand citizenship. Any children that you have who are born outside New Zealand ater youhave received the grant o citizenship may have a claim to New Zealand citizenship by descent.

Fee

Unless a courier ee is paid by the applicant all documents to be returned to an overseas address(outside the country in which the application is lodged) will be sent by standard air mail (which isunsecured and untraceable). For conirmation o the price please contact the Citizenship Oice in thecountry in which you are applying.

Applying from overseas

The ee o NZ$204.40/AU$180/GBP94 provides or the registration and issue o one certicate o NewZealand citizenship by descent. We are not authorised to issue reunds once the application has been

lodged with the Department. The ee is or investigating the claim and is not dependant on the outcome.

Both photos must be the same in all aspects two prints rom the same negative taking care they are notdamaged by staples, pins, paperclips, olding or ink. Photos are required for all applicants.

The Photos must be:

Recent, less than 6 months old.

Be a ull ront, close up view o the head and shoulders with the head covering 70% to 80% othe photograph.

Be taken with a neutral expression (not laughing or rowning) with your mouth closed.

Show you looking straight at the camera, and your head not tilted.

Show your eyes open and clearly visible, and no hair in your eyes.

Without sunglasses. Tinted prescription glasses may be worn as long as eyes are still visible.

A true image and not altered in any way.

Clear, sharp and in ocus with minimum relective light on ace. No redeye.

With a plain light coloured background (not white).

Be o good quality colour and on high quality photographic paper, with no ink marks on the image(no inkjet printers).

45mm x 35mm in size.

Glasses rames must not obscure the eyes.

and date it. Please note that the photo must be signed on the same date as the proof of
