IES San José is a general secondary school situated in southwestern Spain and it offers basic Secondary education for students up to sixteen years old. The education offer is completed by two non-compulsory advanced courses which grant our students access to tertiary studies once they have finished their upper secondary education. Our school has also three Vocational Training courses dealing with marketing, mechanics and electricity which enable students to find a job in local firms or businesses. IES San Jose hosts students from the surrounding rural areas and also takes part in the implementation of vocational-oriented courses to help students who have previously failed in their studies, supporting them until they get the general certificate of education or enrol into vocational training. IES San Jose has been granted the implementation of a bilingual class, thereby improving the quality of the education offered to students and allowing teachers to take advantage of an CLIL approach in some subjectcs. Likewise, the current participation into other European programmes or initiatives such as the Portfolio of European Languages is improving the use of foreign languages (English, French and possibly Portuguese) more actively into the school curriculum.

Geniko Likio Diapolitismikis Ekpedefsis Sapon is an intercultural training high school unit located in Sapes, a small town of Rodopi, Greece. Sapes is a disadvantaged rural area with high rates of unemployment, near the borders with Bulgaria. The aims of our school are the following. First, to prepare pupils for the general exams in order to be admitted to universities. Second, to offer intercultural education teaching cooperation and tolerance between people of different cultures and origin. The pupils of our school could be characterized as participants with specific needs for multiple reasons. First, our school's population consists of minority groups. These groups consist of either religious minorities, e.g. Muslims, or social minorities such as Gipsies. Second, many of our pupils are either migrants or refugees originating from the former Soviet Union. Third, most of our pupils live in small relatively isolated villages in the vicinity of Sapes. It is evident that the vast majority of our pupils are at risk of social exclusion due to their different religious beliefs, social status and origin and by the fact that by living in a small villages of a rural area do not enjoy equal opportunities .

Cirkevne gymnazium Stefana Misika is located in town Spisska Nova Ves in Slovakia. It is Curch General Secondary school. The students who are attending our school today have to be prepared to consider the European society as a field of their intellectual, professional and political activity, a society founded on the rights of human beings, on peace, on tolerance, equality and solidarity. The European school has the duty of preparing young people to enter the multicultural world. Our Europe wants to be a multi-cultural and multi-lingual society. All teachers and students need to acquire a “European experience” through relationships and contacts. Aims which are essential for a European school are promoting the knowledge of languages and encouraging the pedagogical innovation,. The school has to put the question of the European identity and to give new generations the dimension of “being European”.

The National Gas School is a vocational and technical secondary school, established in 1873, at present attended by more than 1100 learners aged 15-18/19, with a teaching staff of about 80 teachers and trainers. Our students are specializing in the following sections: Mathematics and Computer Sciences; Economic Studies; Electronics; Chemistry and Environment Protection Based on last year’s entrance selection we hold the third place in the Sibiu County, while our graduaters’results in the final exam place us among the best highschools in the country, with 87% students who passed the Bacalaureate exams, of which about 90% usually take up university studies. We are proud of some of our students’ prizes won at national and international competitions and contests throughout the years. Our town, Medias, is situated in Sibiu County, at the heart of Romania, in a multicultural region of old traditions and natural beauty, close to many touristic attractions. However, our town is situated in a region that was highly polluted because of the 15 km distance from Copsa Mica. Our students come from the whole region, many of them being from the surrounding rural area, which means that they either commute or they live in our boarding facility during the week. In this project we intend to encourage our students to discover the beauty and cultural wealth of our region as well as to learn and appreciate the variety of cultures belonging to the partners’ countries. Our school is situated in Eastern Norway, close to the border of Sweden. Most students come from the local community, although some fields of study (e.g. Sports) attract students from the rest of the county. There are approx. 6500 inhabitants in the municipality of Trysil, which at the same time hosts of Norway’s largest ski-resort. Therefore, tourism has taken over as the main income for most people in this rural area as opposed to farming and foresting previously. Another interest for many people in this area is hunting, which is a tradition in many of the local families. The level of education of the inhabitants in this area is lower than the average national level. Furthermore, the rate of early school leavers from Upper Secondary School in our region is relatively high, and it is a priority of the politicians to lower that. The majority of the students at our school are ethnic Norwegian, but there are a few refugees and students from foreign countries. Trysil Upper Secondary School is a relatively small school with different fields of study both vocational and general studies in preparation of entering university. Some of these students specialize in social studies and languages with a particular focus on travelling and tourism. In addition to that many students are striving to learn English and many are not very motivated to study foreign languages at all. We believe that an international project will be very motivating for both students and teachers. Furthermore, it is important to bring the European dimension into teaching and this project will function as a tool in doing so. Students will become acquainted with students from other countries and cultures of Europe and through a communications- and learning process they will get to know what it means to be “European” and be inspired to experience different areas of Europe themselves either as tourists or perhaps during studies and work. At our school we have very good access to ITC technically, and we are in the process of exploiting these tools in teaching. We have been using an LMS solution for a number of years and every student has his or her own labtop in class. Therefore, communication with students and teachers in the project will be easy with regard to the technical aspects.

I.T.C.G. "Argentia"Secondary School in Gorgonzola has 900 students coming from various nearby towns in the milanese province and from families with different socio-economic levels. It is remarkably located in an industrial area, within a regional and eclectic context and due to this fact most of our students show a positive attitude towards all the curricular and after school activities. However, the increasing enrolment of foreign students (especially from Eastern Europe) is pushing the teaching staff to take up strategies to foster the integration of such students and promote at the same time fundamental educational values that are primordial to our school objectives: tolerance, respect and multiculturality. According to this view, we apply for our partnership for this LLP Comenius Project since it highlights both students' personal and intellectual development to be attained by means of direct contact and common activities with students from foreign countries. This way, another challenge is to strengthen their awareness of European citizenship in a global perspective that promotes participants' responsibility in building up a fair and equal society that considers "diversity" as a source of wealth for an enriching pluralism.

It is the first time our school takes part in Comenius since it sees in the programme the opportunity to develop and adjust its learning standards to the European ones in terms of common respect of social and cultural values. Teaching at Zespoł Szkol Ponadgimnazjalnych Nr 2 in Kielce aims at leveling the playing field of those students who come from different social and geographical backgrounds, i.e. teens from rural and urban areas. The situation in which teenagers of the school struggle with poverty, unemployment of either of both parents or, those which are to some extend dysfunctional families. The school tries to provide and ensure the equal educational start and standards to all participants, especially for the teens of the disadvantaged areas; those with specific needs (the ones at risk of social exclusion, migrants and refugees) and help them to overcome differences between socio-cultural levels of competence in learning by the school's organization of extracurricular activities and Comenius programme. The equalization is thus significant since it plays the chief role in shaping youngters' characters, develops linguistic skills and enables them to discover the variety of cultural methods, standards, profiles and values via European community of the same youth sharing similar interests and beliefs. Our school is situated in a beautiful surrounding of Świętokrzyskie Mountains which have plenty many remarkable forests, geological parks, ancient villages, mineral streams, cultural places and historical institutions which are priceless for the Kielce's municipal city.

Kaunata Secondary School lies in the eastern part of Latvia, called Latgale. D.1. SUMMARY

Summary of the planned partnership in the communication language of the project. This description may be used by the European Commission and/or the National Agency when providing information on selected projects, so please be clear and precise.

"Euroguide" is a Multilateral Comenius Project aimed at creating a series of guidebooks covering the following subjects: school life, traditions and habits, historical facts, job opportunities, cultural and natural heritage and free time activities of those countries involved in it. These guidebooks are aimed at students and teachers who want to enlarge their educational or professional training in other countries. The project provides with with useful information about language, culture, history and labour market in specific parts of Europe in order to promote European mobility and lifelong learning. This project also aims at the consolidation and development of both communicative and social skills of all the partners involved. With the establishment of a two-year partnership, we would like to give our students the opportunity of participating in an European project where they can discover the variety and distinctiveness of European regions or cities by means of international cooperation, exchange of ideas or visits and active involvement in meaningful tasks. Since our main purpose is to get to know each culture and society better -from a respectful and stimulating approach- and to offer a variety of activities for young people to do; we really hope that we can contribute to improve the quality of education and promote a sense of social cohesion and European citizenship in our schools.

D.2. RATIONALE

Please describe the motivation for this project and why this project is needed.

Our project aims to broaden the range of possibilities for our students from both an educational and European perspective. With such a vast and complex background as that of the European Union there are many opportunities students have to discover and take advantage of. A project like "Euroguide" helps students learn and enjoy this European reality and provides them with a support and guide tool to encourage them to visit and explore a variety of European countries. In these guidebooks they will not only have an introduction to historical, geopolitical and linguistic facts but also to working possibilities in order to make their future visits to these countries easier and more enjoyable. We think that mobilities are very important for students because they can discover different countries and live with host families in order to experience new ways of life and culture. Communication and cooperation are very important among students in international work groups during project meetings so they learn how to cope with problems and tasks and assert their opinions. we would like to make our students and staff more aware of the advantages of mobility and lifelong education as a means of becoming fully aware of how to deal with the challenges in order to fulfill their own potential. Likewise, every school of this project has somehow experienced the feeling of belonging to a wider and international educational community. We have realised that knowledge of a foreign culture and the awareness of everything it has to offer is indeed an asset that cannot be easily fulfilled in every school without international ties. Our project undoubtedly will bring us closer, likely in sharing the same anxieties and the same hopes as well. Another motivation for this project deals with students' participation in their own learning process through lifelong learning.It is important to improve the learning environment of students in secondary school, to build relations and networks, to create consciousness around the consequences of education and student choices in the process of learning and finding a job. By means of this we mean to address the problem of early school leavers from upper Secondary School, which is a

general problem that applies to all countries in Europe. In order to solve this problem it is of great importance that students are involved in the process. This will give them a sense of self awareness in their role as students and active partners in the future society. We also feel the necessity of promoting social inclusion in education, including the integration of migrants as a way of dealing with this topic. Lastly, with the involvement of nine European states, one of the project main aims is to promote cooperation between similar schools all over Europe in order to ensure the quality of the educational systems. Besides, the project's final product theme - country guides - and the final products will encourage everybody to use them, to share ideas about teaching methods, to improve the knowledge of the foreign languages, and to promote creativity and imagination. The project is important not only in terms of exchanging information regarding culture, traditions and teaching ideas, but also for the opportunity it offers to pupils of disadvantaged areas to feel as members of the greater European family.

D.3. PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND STRATEGY

The main objectives of this project are: - To make our European students appreciate the complexity and diversity of partner countries through a synthesis of culture, language, institutions and youth values. - To provide assistance to students and broaden their working opportunities after finishing one stage of education in order to study or work in a European Union country. - To encourage the use of languages as such as English (a working language) as a communicative tool, and learn to value it as a personal and collective heritage capable of transmitting our cultural values. - To contribute to our students’ longlife learning through a program of activities to strengthen their European awareness and motivate them to continue their involvement by following European programs such "Youth on the Move". - To facilitate the mobility of European students and promote this program in our schools to involve teachers, students, families and local representatives. - To use new technologies and creative approaches to produce, process and disseminate results to a broader level. We intend to address those subjects related to communication, ICT skills, social interaction and career guidance. It is a good opportunity for us all to profit from and assess other countries' learning styles and what they are aimed at. In order to fulfill these objectives, we propose the following strategies: - To establish working groups in order to evaluate, synthesize and produce texts, images or any type of document that will illustrate the culture and society of a country. - By means of multilateral meetings, project coordinators will present their results or a selection of material they think most representative of their countries to their teaching partners. Other participants will give advice and assess the material in these meetings or by using e-tools to participate from a distance.

- Students, thanks to exchanges with their European partners, will have the opportunity to see whether all this material is helpful or not. They will also be in charge of selecting and developing information or facts that are relevant to the final product according to their priorities. - As a working method, it will be proposed the use of communicative approaches that emphasize meaningful learning. We also incorporate programs that enhance students' linguistic competence as the use of European Language Portfolio, Europass, student mobility and focus on CLIL.

D.5. EUROPEAN ADDED VALUE

What is the added value of your project towards a more intensive European cooperation?

The publishing of a guidebook containing helpful information for students or staff who may wish to enlarge their educational or professional qualification would be a valuable source to set up tighter European links of cooperation and friendship. By means of multilateral exchanges or visits, both teachers and students can profit their language skills and European awareness. On the one hand, students' motivation towards learning and finding out about their European partners is expected to increase. "Euroguide" is project conceived also to instill tolerance and respect for other countries customs or traditions, while at the same time that it encourages a critical approach to the understanding of a foreign culture. Students should also be aware of the full range of possibilities that they may take advantage of thanks to using a foreign language effectively with other European youths. Teachers and other staff can share their experiences in relation to new approaches, bilingual teaching and CLIL as examples of good practice. Teachers will also have the chance to find a way of supporting their training as professionals since this project involves the exchanging of ideas and methods while in the visits, so we can develop aspects of different European systems into the curriculum. Team work among teachers and pupils from different countries within a partnership also gives a unique opportunity to experience the European dimension Finally, schools can improve their level of education by taking up progressively a continuous involvement into different European programmes related to youth and education. This way, the coordinators of this project expect to use it as an efficient source of transmitting practical information that addresses the whole educational community.

D.6. IMPACT

What impact do you expect partnership activities to have on persons (pupils/learners/trainees and staff) and on the participating institutions?

The teaching staff will improve the quality and efficiency of their competences first by communicating in foreign languages and using ICT to strengthen that communication, and second by establishing long term relationships of friendship and cooperation with other teachers. The quality of teaching methods will be clearly influenced by the use of creative and innovative approaches into the regular curriculum. The implementation of a working plan which is both stimulating and feasible makes it necessary the use of strategies that appeal to the students and have an attainable result to be enjoyed by the whole community. Because of this, we will highlight the use of meaningful tasks, the importance of cooperation, the involvement in after school activities and the efficient use of ICT. The students will use the English language and mother tongue in order to convey their research on the most outstanding parts to be included in a guidebook. This will have an obvious influence in their language and communication skills. At the same time they will try out new creative and imaginative approaches in order to make the final product as appealing as

possible. Although they will be duly monitored, students will develop working team strategies, assess their work properly and accept the responsibility of involving themselves in the project activities and the final products. Students will also be aware of the impact of lifelong learning on their own development and the challenges and opportunities it gives them to progress as European citizens. This project also wants to enhance European citizenship awareness. It will be our personal contribution to the spreading of modern European ideals dealing with democratic values and tolerance. Democratic and humanistic traditions of the old continent command to observe the democratic principles. They respect the variety of values and traditions. It is the task of a better education to remind the mutual roots from which in the course of thousands of years grew a rich variety of the new Europe. The participant institutions expect to get some support from local and regional authorities in order to prepare the visits and enrich the final product. In turn they will become more widely known through disseminations of project outcomes and a permanent relationship with the local mass-media. Institutions also get the chance of building up twinships based on educational exchanges or cooperation with others from a wide European area.

F. PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

F.1. DISTRIBUTION OF TASKS

Please explain the distribution of tasks between participating institutions and the competences required from each of them. Also explain how you will ensure the active envolvement of all partners in common partnership activities.

The coordinator school's tasks are: - To be in charge of filling in the application form and after that, establishing regular and effective communication between the coordinators in the partner schools. - To be responsible for the organization of the preparatory visit and to monitor the overall progress of the project, acting as a contact point and support for any difficulty. - To supervise and help with the organization of different project meetings in every country. - To collect, edit and store all the available material for the final product. - To evaluate the progress of the project using tests, questionnaires and discussion forums. - To organise dissemination for the whole project, fulfilment of deadlines and providing all the partners with updated and necessary information. The other partners are expected to pay an equal contribution to the project. The following also applies to the coordinator school: - Teachers coordinating the project are supposed to get the partnership under way by exchanging comments and renewed commitment. They should also ensure that pupils and other staff in their schools are involved in the project by the organisation of briefly meetings of introduction and participation into the partnership. - To show the project to the whole school community and help other teaching staff participate by tutorial sessions. - Coordinator teachers will select those pupils who will be involved in the project activities according to a profile agreed on by all schools. These teachers will coordinate all the educational and after school activities belonging to the project, and will set up work groups on the basis of cooperative learning. - Work groups will make a research in the topics suggested for the guide. It includes selection of information, taking pictures and videos and compilation of data in digital form. - To organise project visits according to a work plan which entails the preparation of a meetings, health and safety of participants, activities to be carried out with students, accommodation and counselling. As a whole, all partners are likely to organise dissemination activities in each institution and city and to make a report of the project activities for each year. Since our project is based on collaborative principles, every partner is willing to help the others in the production of final products or in the organisation of project exchanges by means of suggesting a more flexible work plan.

F.2. COOPERATION AND COMMUNICATION

Please explain how effective cooperation and communication between participating institutions will be organised.

The relation of all the institutions will be based on the collaboration and communication between all the participants. Since the project involves nine different countries, it's important for everybody to ensure a good cooperation and a friendly atmosphere. Coordinator teachers will keep a regular communication on every aspect related to the project progress. The coordinator school is again the one in charge of checking that every partner gets the same and appropriate deal of information even when the project is pending of approval. Effective cooperation will be ensured by exchanging information by all the schools via a newsletter that will show each school the project progress. Schools will also account for the visibility of the project by taking into account other staff and parents who may wish to cooperate as well. The cooperation will be particularly visible during meetings where each country will have to prepare something connected to the tasks of the project. The English language will be the "communication tool" and it will be used in all the project documents, besides mother tongues. We will rely heavily on ICT, especially in open source tools such as Open Office and web 2.0 software in order to keep the flow of information going. The communication between all the participating institutions will be made: - by using Internet (e mails), phone and fax. - by creating and using a forum and chat-rooms for teachers and students, this will be carried out using a TwinSpace platform. - by using web-cam connections. - by communicators like MSN Messenger and Skype. - by organizing pod-casting and video- conferences. - by organizing project meetings. Finally, the improvement of communicative skills is also one of the main aims on this project. English has been chosen as working language, but we would like to make everyone participant of a wide and rich linguistic community and that is why we consider the development of a functional knowledge of the languages of all partners involved. "Euroguide" is a project that will provide participants with an opportunity to use and improve communicative skills and learn new languages we might never have considered learning maybe because lack of contact. In order to do this, participants can also apply for Comenius In-ServiceTraining grants to attend a language course or look for resources by means of which teachers and students can learn the most basic things in an unknown language.

Coordinator teachers in all participating schools are involved in decisions relating to the structure and outcomes of the project. Staff also manages the organizational part of the project which includes visits schedule, the setting up of the work plan, involvement of local community and other potential players, and assessment and dissemination of results. Since our project focuses mainly on pupil involvement, they will be involved in the planning of activities according to their necessities, making decisions and improvements of project work and/or material for all the final products, but under the supervision of their teachers that will help them produce texts, collect information, make presentations or organise exhibitions and be good guests. During work group sessions the students will be involved in activities such as: - to communicate with each other through digital media. - to produce oral and written introduction to each national language. - to process material using ICT. - to produce the texts of the guides. - to shoot photos and films containing images of their regions. - to complete the questionnaire and evaluate the project work and outcomes. The main part of students' involvement will take place during exchange visits. All previous work done at the school has to be presented to other students following a series of guidelines based on collaboration and active participation. In order to make visits more enjoyable by the students, they have to cooperate in the organization of project visits by getting involved in the following activities: - to host foreign students at their homes. - to act as guides to their towns and make guest students feel comfortable with a different culture. - to make and share presentations of what they have found so far about the suggested topics and assess others' work and use it as means of improving their own. - to participate in the school and everyday life of their host partner. - to participate in activities (trips, learning events, etc...) that may take place during visits. All schools are aware of students with mixed abilities. All interested students will have the equal opportunity to take part in the project work at their level and according to their capacity and backgrounds.

This project does provide an added value to traditional learning and teaching by bringing in new and creative approaches. We have included many subjects that not always are related to linguistic fields, so our project can be integrated into regular school curriculum from an interdisciplinary approach. As we also do not want to overload our students with extra work, we have agreed on some measures to integrate this project into the current learning activities. Project work can be carried out during morning lessons as a normal part of compulsory education. Teachers who become involved can dedicate part of their class to work on the project. Subjects which are likely to include parts of the project are: - Information and Communication Technologies: creating a newsletter and digital presentations, using TwinSpace. - Foreign Languages: using language skills and strategies to communicate successfully with foreign students. - Geography: pupils will learn in more detail information about the regions described in the guides - History/ European Studies: pupils will learn details both about their home history and culture and about the common European history. - Natural Science: students will know about natural heritage around their region. - Career guidance: pupils find out about job opportunities or high education thanks to lifelong learning. - Arts and Crafts: creation of drawings, pictures and posters. Besides, students will work on the project also as an after school activity in order to supplement the work done at school in normal lessons. Participants can set up an international club of students to exchange greetings, music or any other relevant thing that make the project a rewarding one.

The process of evaluation takes place throughout the two years and it involves all the parts of the project: teachers, students and parents. All students' work will be monitored during the project progress by observation from staff and peers, presentations of results and questionnaires at the end of the project year designed by staff and completed by all students. Final reports written by each school at the end of each project year will be also used for evaluation of the outcomes and the process. The coordinator school will be responsible of gathering all the final reports and, at the same time to monitor the overall progress of the project. Evaluation procedure will be as follows: - at the beginning of the project the coordinating team will make a common checklist about the objectives for each school work group in order to monitor the project activities for the next months. - during visits, all participants and teachers especially will discuss about the difficulties encountered during the activities and will assess their own performance. - feedback from those not directly involved in ongoing activities will be also taken into account to check that our partnership offers tangible and practical benefits. - at the end of each year, the coordinating team will make a final evaluation through checklists. - at the end of the whole project, coordinator school will make the final evaluation of all the activities, final products and it will gather all the documents (questionnaires, tests, reports of discussions, reports of each team) in a portfolio. - the expected impact will be carried out by collecting all schools response to the guide and if they have finally found it as a helpful resource to discover some parts of Europe. The process of evaluation is very important for the progress of our project; it helps each team be aware of the good and weak points of its work. Monitoring progress by means of checklists and questionnaires will also provide with feedback of our performance and allows us to adapt the project objectives and outcomes to new or changing needs.

F.6. DISSEMINATION AND THE USE OF RESULTS

How will you disseminate and use the results, experiences and, where applicable, products of the partnership? - in the participating organisations? - in the local communities? - in the wider lifelong learning community?

The results of this project should be introduced first to the senior management of each participating school and their local government. Schools are responsible for presenting all the results of the project to local press and media including school gazettes or websites. Other activities that are envisaged to the promotion of the project is that each school will create a “project corner” in a classroom or in the hall of the school with information and pictures about activities, project meetings and final products. Students, especially, will get a certification signed and stamped by the host organisation that they can include as part of their dossier in their European Language Portfolio. The guidebooks will be freely distributed among the educational community and into those institutions that have somehow contributed to the project. Since the printing version could be an expensive option, we will make them available in school websites as downloadable material so that everyone can have public access to it. Printed copies will be especially kept in school and local libraries, youth associations, tourism offices and National Agencies. Regarding the local community, the Web page of each school will contain information about the activities and final products of each year and representatives of the Local community and Local authorities will be invited at dissemination activities such as educational seminars or conferences. In the wider lifelong learning community coordinators will invite colleagues from other schools at dissemination activities. Project meetings and guidebook presentations will also be carried out in higher level institutions and in training sessions for unemployed young people. The results will be used to show the importance of collaborative work and lifelong learning as part of an advanced knowledge-based society. These are guidebooks produced by students to students who want to further develop their learning and working skills by means of interchange, cooperation and mobility. We will also use the final product as an example of how the European dimension affects our managing and planning of teaching activities and how we can promote creativity, language learning and use of ICT- based content following a carefully designed work plan that motivates both teachers and students.
