ADHESIVE ENGINEERING POOL GLAZEAPPLICATION GUIDE

A. HOW TO TEST YOUR EXISTING POOL PAINT

Most painted pools have either chlorinated rubber or an epoxy coating. The twosystems are incompatible, it is therefore very important for you to know thesystem you have before recoating.

1 Lower the water level in the pool by approximately 150 to 200mm to achieve adry test area.

2 Lightly scrub a 100mm X 100mm section to remove chalky paint usingmoistened steel wool then rinse the area clean and dry it.

3 Apply ADHESIVE ENGINEERING Tool Cleaning Solvent to a clean rag. Holdfirmly against the scrubbed area of pool paint for two minutes. Rub vigorouslyand immediately check the area. If softening, blistering and loss of coating hastaken place the likely conclusion is that the pool has chlorinated rubber paint asa coating.

4 Should you want to retain the chlorinated rubber pool finish on your pool you willhave to recoat with the same material. Should you decide to upgrade the systemto an epoxy based coat, all traces of the chlorinated rubber pool paint have to beremoved by grinding water blasting and grit blasting. The surface will needattention. We require a smooth uniform finish to paint over. After grit blastinggrinding, Rendering, patching may be required or a sanded down L13 epoxyseal-coat may be enough to achieve this finish (recommended procedure) callfor advice.

5 If no softening or blistering is detected and the surface shows no stickiness, thepool most likely has an epoxy based paint system.

You may proceed to use POOLGLAZE to repaint.

B. REPAINTING PREVIOUSLY EPOXY PAINTEDCONCRETE POOLS

Note; if majority of old paint is blown off with water blasting 3 coats are required.

1 Empty pool. Remove any loose paint or chalk by 3200 psi water jet enough to present aclean etched surface to bond to. Clean up and repair any physical damage to the interiorsurface of the pool by using ADHESIVE ENGINEERING ‘S P110 Concrete Repair Kit. Cureovernight and sand or grinding back all repairs. For the average family size pool you willneed 5 packs of POOL GLAZE for two coats and 7 packs of POOL GLAZE for three coats.(see Application Instructions.)

2 As a general guide paint your pool when the concrete temperature is above 10 °C but donot paint in direct, high summer sun. In summer choose the cool of the day, preferablythe late afternoon for painting. Protect surfaces, if possible, from long exposure to the sunduring the initial part of the curing (first 6 to 8 hours). Defer painting if rain is expected. Threeconsecutive rain free days are ideal to complete your painting. Dew after cold mornings orshowers must be permitted to fully evaporate and the pool surface must be dry beforepainting or repainting may commence.

3 Apply all materials strictly in accordance with Application Instructions (see section D).

4 Apply a minimum of two coats by roller and or brush. Coverage to be 10 sq.m per litre. After the application of the first coat proceed to apply the second and other coats within 24hours of the finish of each previous coat. no sooner than 12 hours after the application ofeach coat. The paint should be applied in a even thin manner. Applying the paint too thickcan result in the paint not curing properly between coats and result in a shorter life.

5 Replace used roller covers after each coat. Clean all other tools and equipmentimmediately after use with ADHESIVE ENGINEERING’S Tool Cleaning Solvent.

6 After completion of the last coat allow Pool Glaze to cure. (Refer item D – Cure*).

C. OLD MARBLE OR QUARTZ TYPE RENDERED POOLS.

Preamble. These types of renders may be porous and contain salt like solutions that whenthe pool is dried these solutions become a crystal . after painting these crystals will get wetand swell causing a blister under our paint. Follow these procedures and the blisters will beless and smaller than if other procedures are used.

1 Drain pool and check for drummy render. Mark out the damage, if the damage isconsiderable it may be an advantage to re-render the pool.

2 Water-blast the marble render with a strong water-blaster about 3200 to 4500 p.s.i.do not have the nozzle too close the render will wear away. This blasting will removethe caulk and stains . Use copious amounts of high pressure water and an averagesized pool of 95 square metres will take 6 hours to prepare.

3 Dry the pool, check the surface for defects such as holes soft marble shene &drummy areas, any areas missed with the water-blasting will need rectifying.

4 Holes should be filled with our P110 two part epoxy paste. Cured overnight thensanded smooth.

5 All soft areas marble shene needs to be removed, in large areas trowlingARMAGROUT AP may be necessary to rebuild the surface to a smooth finishsuitable for painting

6 The application of a L13 epoxy sealcoat dusted down with HP sand is recommended.

7 Your pool surfaces may be ready to paint.

SAFETY; Wear Ear & eye protection, correct shoes, rain coat & pants. Advise yourneighbours of the possible noisy water-blaster. It is always best to have another person onhand to assist if there is an unforseen problem.

D. PAINTING NEW OR PREVIOUSLY UNPAINTEDCONCRETE POOLS1 Rendered or off form concrete must be a minimum of three weeks old before surfacetreatment may commence. Any sign of ground water intrusion must be rectified beforesurface treatment.

2 Remove all contamination, laitance and/or loose surface matter by grinding, light acidetching, or water blasting until a clean, dry and dust free surface is achieved. Thesurface finish should be smooth and uniform before painting. With off form concreteblisters may need to be filled.

3 Clean up and repair all surface discontinuities using ADHESIVE ENGINEERING’SP110 Concrete Repair Kit. Cure overnight, sand back all repairs when cured. For theaverage size family pool you will need three coats (7 packs) of POOL GLAZE.

4 As a general guide paint your pool when concrete temperature is above 10°C but donot paint in direct, high summer sun. In summer choose the cool of the daypreferably the late afternoon for painting and protect surfaces, if possible, from longexposure to the sun during the initial part of the curing (first 6 to 8 hours). Defer paintingif rain is expected. Three consecutive rain free days are ideal to complete your painting.Dew after cold mornings or showers must be permitted to fully evaporate. The poolsurface must be dry before painting or repainting may commence.

5 Apply all materials strictly in accordance with application instructions (see section D).

6 Apply a minimum of three coats by roller or brush. Cover to be approximately10 sq.m per liter per coat. After the application of the first coat, proceed to apply thefollowing coats within 24 hours of finishing each coat. Do not apply paint within 12 hoursof applying a previous coat. Apply paint in thin even coats. When paint is applied to thickit will not cure properly between coats. Resulting in short life.

7 Replace used roller cover after each coat and clean all other tools and equipmentimmediately after use with ADHESIVE ENGINEERING’S Tool Cleaning Solvent.

E. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

HOW MUCH POOLGLAZE ? For the average sized pool of approximately 5 X 10 X 2mdeep you will need approximately 7 1/2 packs for 3 coats of ADHESIVEENGINEERING’S POOL GLAZE.

WHAT SIZE POOL GLAZE comes in10.5 litre, 3.5 litre and 1.75 litre “user friendly” kits.

CONTAINER. Enough space is provided in the larger “A” container to receive all thecontents of the “B” part and still have sufficient space for the thorough mixing of yourPOOL GLAZE.

MIXING Store poolglaze off the concrete floor and mix your POOL GLAZE in theshade in hot weather. Power stir the part A kit before adding the part B. Pierce the top ofthe tin rim to allow all of part B to drain into the Part A. Power mix for 5 minutes at low250 RPM, with care, to incorporate all of the contents, scrape the sides of the pale with ascraper, to ensure complete mixing. Stand for 15 minutes in a warm place. Slow speedpower mix again for 3 minutes. Avoid frothing, then decant some into paint tray. Apply allmixed POOL GLAZE required within one hour.

ADHERE STRICTLY TO MIXING INSTRUCTIONSPAINTING Use “medium nap” 10mm-12mm lamb’s wool roller covers. The paint shouldbe applied in an even thin manner. Applying the paint too thick can result in the paint notcuring properly between coats and result in a shorter life. (10m2 / litre)

As POOL GLAZE contains solvent, take appropriate care with open flames or breathingin fumes in enclosed (deep end of pool) areas. NO SMOKING WHILE PAINTING

Moisture from rain or dew on un cured POOLGLAZE pool paint, will result in a whitepowdery substance. After 12 hours cure, before repainting, wipe off the white spotslightly with a rag moistened with Tool Cleaning Solvent, followed up with dry rag andrepeat if necessary before proceeding with next coat.

After a minimum 12 hours cure time form the first coat. Apply the following coat in asimilar manner, but no later than 24 hours after the application of the previous coat.

Subsequent coats where needed are to be applied in a similar manner.

CURE* In cold weather allow 7 days to cure. In warm weather allow5 days. Do not add chemicals to the water until pool is full

POOL-GLAZE epoxy swimming pool paint General guide

for pool care. After application of POOL-GLAZE, if you have early rain, this may cause a bloom on the surface. Ifthis occurs on the primary coats, allow POOL-GLAZE to set tack free then lightly sand the whitebloom off. Vacuum clean. Continue with next coat.

If caught out on the last coat, you may scrub this bloom off after full cure or allow it to wear away withnormal use.

Leaves or insects stuck to the surface may be gently scraped off when POOL-GLAZE is fully cured.Leaf stains will bleach off when the pool is filled and chlorinated.

Leakage or flooding through the hydrostatic valve will not harm POOL-GLAZE if it has skinned over, but may leave a bloom as in paragraphs 1 & 2.

Pool should not be filled for at least 5 days in summer & min. 7 in winter.

After filling pool, filter for 3 days, then add chlorinate for next 2 nights and vacuum sediment off floor.Continuous filtration should be carried out until water is crystal clear.

Total alkalinity (the measure of dissolved carbonates in the water) should be maintained at 60 to 200ppm. Test the water for Calcium Chloride, reading should be 80 to 500 ppm

Best results and long life of POOL-GLAZE if ph at 7.2 / 7.4 adjust when necessary. Therecommended chlorine level is one to two ppm. Three or more ppm is over supply and shortens thelife of POOL-GLAZE.

See Saturation index guidelines chart for detailed procedures

Broom the POOL-GLAZE regularly especially if you don't have a suction cleaner, note: W ith aneglected & heavily chalking surface your filter will remove only a small % of the cloud & the rest willsettle on the surface & need to be stirred up the next day and so on until you have a chalk freesurface.

After brooming follow with 8 hours filtering. This will continue to present a smooth non-algaesupporting film for the longest possible time, particularly when using calcium hypochlorite.

Turn down salt chlorinator in winter or even off and add one cup of chlorine per week, during theweeks the pool is not used.

We recommend a re-paint every 5 years, possibly two coats is all that is needed if the water has beenkept in good condition & there is no change of colour.

Developed & first installed in 1980 & have many pools that have not been re-painted for eight or moreyears. These pools often need 3 coats to bring them up to standard.

NOTE: Before attempting to paint old or marble rendered pools or previously painted with chlorinatedrubber paint, discuss the work with our office. POOL-GLAZE is an AUSTRALIAN PRODUCT.
