Canadian Applied Research EcoSystem (since 2000)

• Significant growth in Tri-Council-eligible colleges, polytechnics & institutes – NSERC eligibility

has been the first stepping stone for most/all institutions

• NSERC has championed applied research in the colleges

• “One-hour drive” point-of-view

• Funding has grown over the years, but had plateaued (until FY 18); resulting in fewer competitions

• But still funding-driven limitations & gaps

• “Overlaps” – Research Discipline & Sector Served

• Research Support Fund

• Consultation & cooperation is the norm – many moving parts

• More consistent messaging amongst like-minded organizations (e.g. ACCC/CICan & PC)

• Much capacity has been built

• Faculty participation is still a challenge

• Demand is increasing

• Intellectual Property (thankfully!!) is not an impediment

• Growth has led to national rankings (both good & bad)

• Patience & Persistence Pays
