Vistara Automation – Goals

• Automate common management

tasks at scale

• Save manual effort

• Eliminate human error

• Improve consistency

Page 4: Applying Vistara Runbook Automation

Use Cases

• On demand system administration tasks

– E.g. Check 100s of severs for a security

vulnerability (e.g. Heartbleed)

• Routine system administration tasks across:

– E.g. Scrape old logs from 100 servers to a

central repository for future audits

• Collect additional context around an alert

– E.g. Get processes running when alert

occurred

• Auto remediate issues as they come up

– E.g. Restart a Windows service if it is down

How to do the following for RBA scripts…

• Setup up permissions

• Create

• Organize

• Run on demand

• Run on schedule

• Run an Alert

• View output

• Report

Scenario #1: Identify OpenSSL version installed, on demand

Scenario

• A new security vulnerability has been identified –

it is all over the news (like recent Heartbleed

issue !)

Your task

• Check all your servers if vulnerable version of

OpenSSL is installed

Solution

• Run an RBA script that checks OpenSSL

version across your servers

• Export output to identify which servers need an

update

What version of

SW installed?

Scenario #2: Archive log files to central location on a schedule

Scenario

• Your organization has a new audit and compliance

policy

–Key log files in production servers must be

archived for 36 months for audit

Your task

• Move key logs files in all your servers to a central

archive in AWS S3 storage

Solution

• Run an RBA script that collects log files from each

server and moves them to AWS S3

Scenario #3: Collect context around an alert aid troubleshooting

Scenario

• You are seeing an intermittent failure on devices that

is proving hard to troubleshoot

–You want to get a snapshot of key information

from the device when the failure happens

Your task

• Collect a snapshot of key information whenever a

specific alert occurs

Solution

• Configure RBA script to be run when an alert

triggers
