APPLICATION GUIDELINES

ELIGIBILITY

Any active member of the LeMarquis Dejarmon-Daniel George Sampson Chapter of the Black Law Students Association may apply for an appointed position. An active member is a dues paying member for the 2011-2012 School year. The person must remain active throughout their term in office.

Applicant must be a student in good standing with North Carolina Central University School of law and must remain in good standing throughout their term in office.

If you are not a paid member please contact the treasurer at [email protected] and cc., [email protected], and make payment arrangements. If appointed you must be a paid member before the school year begins.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Please log onto Twen and download the word document application form. Fill out the form and email the form to [email protected] applications must be submitted no later than Monday, May 30, 2011 by 10:00 pm EST to [email protected] .

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process involves: (1) a review of applications, (2) president and vice president recommendations, and (3) board recommendations.

All applications will be reviewed immediately after the submission deadline. Please attach a professional headshot photo to your application.

President and Vice President: The President and Vice President will score applications separately. The scores of the President will be added to the scores of the Vice President and the highest scores will be recommended to the executive board.

Applicant Interviews: Interviews will be conducted June 1-June 4, 2011. All applicants will be e-mailed regarding an interview time.

Board Recommendation: Final recommendation to the board will be made on June 4, 2011. Selection is based on a 100 point metric. Points are allocated as follows:

CHIEF OF STAFF

The Chief of Staff is responsible for the motivation and encouragement of the organization’s officers, specialists and membership. The Chief of Staff must coordinate with NCCU facilities management to reserve all needed program space and materials for all programs. The Chief of Staff must coordinate the incentives program for the organization’s members and board members. The Chief of Staff is responsible for coordinating all partnerships with the Black Law Students Association, other school organizations and outside organizations. The Chief of Staff is responsible for providing professional support to the President and Vice President and performs other duties and special projects assigned by the President. This position requires exceptional organization skills, motivational skills, analytical skills and communication skills.

PARLIAMENTARIAN The Parliamentarian serves as an advisor to BLSA and the BLSA executive board on parliamentary procedures and decides all questions of interpretations and construction of the parliamentary authority and procedural rules of BLSA. The Parliamentarian works with the President to coordinate the election procedures of the new board officers. The Parliamentarian is responsible for making sure the constitution is updated and corrected as needed. The Parliamentarian is responsible for making sure all mock trial and moot court teams know, understand and comply with all competition rules during practice and during competitions. The Parliamentarian is responsible for making sure all competition teams receive case files for practice and for competitions in a reasonable time. The Parliamentarian is responsible for coordinating with the Regional and National Parliamentarian as necessary. This position requires exceptional interpretation and understanding of rules and procedures.

HISTORIAN The Historian prepares a narrative account for BLSA’s activities for the 2011-2012 term. The Historian is responsible for website updates and changes as determined by the executive board. The Historian must work under the direction of the Director of Communications to complete BLSA’s Legal Pad magazine. The Historian must work under the direction of the Secretary to create BLSA’s Historical Archive system. The archive system preserves and maintains the health of BLSA’s historical records. The Historian is responsible for maintaining and creating the organization’s logos, scrap book, videos and banner. This role is also responsible for coordinating photography and other multimedia resources needed by the organization, regional conventions, national conventions, meetings and programs. This position requires creativity, technological skills, visual presentation skills, innovative thinking, and flyer, video and website design skills.

DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP

The Director of Membership oversees all aspects of the member enrollment process. This role develops materials and programs to market membership and directs online membership enrollment. The Director of Membership also presents membership statistics to the executive board; works with inactive members to make sure they become a member in good standing and makes sure events, news, and programs are properly communicated to the membership. This position will work closely with the National Director of Membership and the Regional Director of Membership to make sure local membership needs are met. This position requires exceptional people skills, innovative thinking, motivational skills, communication skills and organizational skills.

DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY SERVICE

The Director of Community Service coordinates and implements community service programs and initiatives with the local community, student body and other law schools in sub region 3. The Director of Community Service is responsible for overseeing the community service requirement program with North Carolina Central University and BLSA’s Undergraduate Internship program. The Director of Community Service will work closely with the Regional Director of Community Service and the National Director of Community Service to make sure all chapter community service requirements are met. The Director of Community Service will develop a sustainable community partnership contract with other community service organizations for future community service programs. This position requires exceptional communication skills, organization skills and motivational skills.

DIRECTOR OF COLLEGE STUDENT DIVISION

The Director of College Student Division is responsible for all pipeline programming aimed at encouraging students to consider the legal profession. This role works to promote interest in the legal career field for high school and undergraduate students, partners with the National and Regional College Student Division, and the National Black Pre-law Admissions and Preparation Conference to help recruit Black students to law school, and develop programs and initiatives to increase the proficiency of black undergraduate students on law school entrance exams. This position also disseminates SRBLSA and NBLSA information to college student division members, and exercises general authority over the business function of the College Student Division. This position requires exceptional communication skills, leadership skills, organization skills and writing skills.

DIRECTOR OF ALUMNIAFFAIRS & DEVELOPMENT

The Director of Alumni Affairs and Development is responsible for growing and improving the alumni database while developing new techniques to maintain relationships with current attorneys who were members of BLSA while in law school. This position will also be tasked with the creation of 4 alumni newsletters as well as alumni networking receptions during the course of the year. Finally, this role is tasked with developing strategies to conduct a comprehensive fundraising campaign for BLSA that includes, identification of alumni and other gift prospects, development of marketing materials, personal solicitation of donors, and directing the solicitation of prospective donors. This position requires innovative thinking to implement many new ideas. This position works closely with the Treasurer and Community Sponsorship Specialist.

DIRECTOR OF SCHOLARSHIP, ACADEMIC & CAREER DEVELOPMENT

The Director of Scholarship, Academic and Career Development develops and implements programs aimed at academic success and professional competence. This position is responsible for mobilizing students for participation on NBLSA’s E-Professional Development series; maintaining BLSA’s online job bank., and assisting in the execution and increased student participation for the regional academic retreat. This position partners with the Director of Alumni Affairs and Development, to develop programs that fosters connections between members and BLSA Alumni. This position also works with regional and National Directors of Education and Career Development to increase participation of BLSA students at regional and national job fairs. This role administers BLSA’s annual academic awards Program and mock mid-terms for 1L’s, 2L’s and 3L’s. This role works with the Treasurer to organize BLSA’s end of the year two day conference/ job fair.

DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL ACTION

The Director of Social and Political Action executes grassroots initiatives that supports the regional and national social action programs and works to link NCCU BLSA with regional, and national social justice initiatives. In particular, this role coordinates with the National Election Specialist and BLSA’s Legislative Advocacy and Judicial Specialist and other board members to raise awareness about voter rights and restoration, youth empowerment, criminal justice, or other pressing legal-based issues. This position is responsible for finding creative ways to execute NBLSA’s constitutionally denoted projects within it’s framework. Programs should focus on communities with historically low voter turnout and/or underrepresented populations.

LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY AND JUDICIAL SPECIALIST

The Legislative Advocacy and Judicial Specialist assists BLSA’s Director of Social and Political Action, and the Regional and National Attorney Generals with the legislative advocacy work of SRBLSA, NBLSA and NCCU BLSA. As part of the Advocacy team, the specialist monitors legislation in Congress, and the North Carolina General Assembly, maintains scheduling of appointments and meetings with Legislative offices; and assists with the implementation of SRBLSA’s Lobby Day. This role may also require assistance in legislative meetings, including attendance if necessary. The Legislative Advocacy and Judicial Specialist may also implement their own lobby day and social action rally. Preference will be given to individuals with connections to North Carolina General Assembly and the Capitol.

DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL PROGRAMS

The Director of Social Programs develops and implements activities for the promotion of networking within the organization, as well as other organizations and professionals. This role develops programming to meet the social and interactive needs of NCCU BLSA members and executive board members. The Director of Social Programs is also responsible for planning executive board unity events and retreats to foster unity and team work. This position requires skills in communication and customer service

INTERNATIONAL NEGOTIATIONS SPECIALIST

The International Negotiations Specialist coordinates the International Negotiations Competition (INC). Further, the International Negotiations Specialist of INC is charged with preparation, and operation of the INC team; and actively seeks the permanent accreditation and recognition for the INC at NCCU School of Law. He/she has the ultimate decision making authority over INC practice, and INC training teams. This position requires experience in negotiation competitions.

COMMUNITY SPONSORSHIP SPECIALIST

The Community Sponsorship Specialist solicits funding from institutional sponsors (e.g., law firms, government employers, corporations, .etc) in the form of sponsorships and tax‐deductible gifts to BLSA. This position works with the Treasurer and fundraising team to develop a realistic fundraising target. This role works under the guidance of the Treasurer and leads the fundraising team. This role works with the President and Director of Communications to prepare and finalize sponsorship solicitation packets. Prior fundraising and/or relationship management experience is strongly preferred.
