DEMISE AT NEW END
THE recent occupation of the new Royal Free Hospital hasmeant the closure of the small but internationally knownendocrine unit at New End Hospital. In 1932 the LondonCounty Council established there a thyroid unit in thecharge of Sir Thomas Dunhill. This prospered under himand his successor Sir Geoffrey Keynes but remained almostsolely a surgical department, the reputation of which wasfurther enhanced by the skills of J. E. Piercy and carriedon by his surgical proteges. The medical side came laterbut developed no less powerfully under the guidance ofRaymond Greene. Biochemical and biophysical laboratorieswere added in 1952 by the regional board with the aid of agenerous gift from King Edward’s Hospital Fund. Formore than 20 years the unit flourished, providing first-classclinical care to thousands of patients with endocrine disease, contributing hundreds of scientific papers, and offeringclinical and laboratory training in this specialty to manyBritish and overseas doctors. One of the outstandingcharacteristics of the unit was the way in which surgeon, physician, and radiotherapist combined in the managementof patients with thyroid disease and the excellent rapportthat existed between the clinicians and the laboratories. In its short life the New End Endocrine Unit built up aformidable reputation in Britain and abroad.
