874 Notes and News DEMISE AT NEW END THE recent occupation of the new Royal Free Hospital has meant the closure of the small but internationally known endocrine unit at New End Hospital. In 1932 the London County Council established there a thyroid unit in the charge of Sir Thomas Dunhill. This prospered under him and his successor Sir Geoffrey Keynes but remained almost solely a surgical department, the reputation of which was further enhanced by the skills of J. E. Piercy and carried on by his surgical proteges. The medical side came later but developed no less powerfully under the guidance of Raymond Greene. Biochemical and biophysical laboratories were added in 1952 by the regional board with the aid of a generous gift from King Edward’s Hospital Fund. For more than 20 years the unit flourished, providing first-class clinical care to thousands of patients with endocrine disease, contributing hundreds of scientific papers, and offering clinical and laboratory training in this specialty to many British and overseas doctors. One of the outstanding characteristics of the unit was the way in which surgeon, physician, and radiotherapist combined in the management of patients with thyroid disease and the excellent rapport that existed between the clinicians and the laboratories. In its short life the New End Endocrine Unit built up a formidable reputation in Britain and abroad.
