Shaper has been appointed research professor in cardiovascular diseases. University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland Prof. J. M. Mynors has been appointed to the chair of surgery, and Prof. Reginald Lightwood to the chair of pxdia- trics at the new medical school. Naval Appointment Surgeon Rear-Admiral E. D. Caldwell has been appointed medical director-general of the Navy and promoted to the rank of surgeon vice-admiral. Joint Consultants Committee This committee welcomed a proposal that a vacancy among the 10 representatives of the British Medical Association’s central consultants and specialists committee should be filled by a junior hospital doctor. At a meeting on Jan. 26, the Ministry of Health confirmed that the Joint Consultants’ Committee remains the recognised negotiating body with the Ministry (and with the management side of the appropriate Whitley Council) on behalf of all grades of medical and dental Staff in the hospital service. British Congress on Crime This congress, organised by the British Society of Crimin- ology, the Howard League for Penal Reform, and the Institute for the Study and Treatment of Delinquency, is to take place at University College London, Gower Street, W.C.1, from Monday to Friday, Sept. 5 to 9. Subjects for discussion will be crime and new developments in social control, crime and personality, and crime and society. Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine This academy is to hold its first international congress in Palma De Majorca, from Sept. 12 to 16. Symposium on Drugs and Sensory Functions A symposium on this subject, arranged by the Co-ordinating Committee for Symposia on Drug Action of the Biological Council, is to be held at the Royal College of Physicians of London, 11, St. Andrews Place, Regent’s Park, N.W.1, on Wednesday and Thursday, March 23 and 24. It will deal with the effects of drugs on hearing, vision, taste, and smell. Institute of Animal Technicians This institute is to hold a congress at the University College of North Wales, Bangor, Caernarvonshire, on Thursday and Friday, March 31 and April 1. Subjects for discussion will include breeding and management of cats under laboratory conditions, problems of poultry isolation, parasites found in newly imported animals, and teratogenic effects of drugs.
