THE use of iron sulphate has been suggested (La7zcet,Sept. 14, p. 340) as a substitute for other iron salts whichdo not justify importation or manufacture in war-time.There is some doubt (Ibid, Sept. 21, p. 366) whetherferric salts are absorbed as such. Mr. H. W. Tomski,M.P.S., chemist to Damancy & Co. Ltd., writes about aprevalent belief that ferrous sulphate cannot be given inwatery solution because of its instability, and mentionsthe following formula which he has published (Pharma-ceut. J. 1939, 1, 239) for a stable liquid preparation :Ferrous sulphate 2-500 Essence of pineapple.. 0-125Copper sulphate .. 0-006 Oil of lemon.... 0-025Dilute sulphuric acid 2-000 Acid fuchsine 0-006Citric acid 0-200 Yellow dye (for acid) .. 0-050Lime juice 6-000 Chloroform water to 100-000Dextrose ....20.000An elixir has since been put on the market containing
gr. 3 of ferrous sulphate (approx. 39 mg. of metallic iron)to the ounce.
