Students enjoyed a variety of foods each day, served to them by the faculty and staff. One of the highlights of the week was the free massages that were made available to students during their class breaks. T Additionally, over the course of the week, representatives from several local businesses and vendors, including Broward 211, Broward County Supervisor of Elections, Broward County Transit, Sam’s Club, and Tri- Rail, came out to share information and resources with students. Students enjoy breakfast during their class break Bagels being served by the Financial Aid team to students during Student Appreciation Week Mock Trial On April 12, 2014 several City College Paralegal students volunteered as jurors for the finals of the University Of Miami School Of Law Mock Trial Competition. The event was held at the Richard Gerstein Justice Building in downtown Miami. The trials were presided over by actual Dade County Circuit Judges and were held in the actual courtrooms used by the Judges. The three students who participated sat as jurors in two different trials, although the same case was at issue (a civil assault and battery tort case). The students who participated were Valrie Johnson, Kellee Ruise, and Brenda Rojas. Brenda was elected by the other jurors to be the Jury Foreman. Normally, jurors deliberate in private, but all three of the students did their jury deliberations publicly as part of the exercise. T hispastApril,theCityCollege BroadcastingClubtooktheir annualfieldtrip,attendingtheNational Association of Broadcasters (NAB) ConventioninLasVegas.Theconventionistheworld’slargestelectronicmediashowcoveringfilmedentertainment,andthedevelopment,management,anddeliveryofcontentacrossallmediums.Withmorethan93,000attendeesfrom156countries,andover1,550exhibitors,theNABShowistheultimatemarketplacefordigitalmediaandentertainment. Duringtheconvention,studentswereabletositinonworkshopsandpresentationsforeditingsoftware,recordingbooths,cloudstorage,and

greenscreentechnologies,aswellasvisitsomeofthemanyexhibitorsthatwereonhand.Inadditiontotheconvention,theclubalsovisitedHollywood,California,wheretheyvisitedParamountstudios.ThegrouphadapersonaltourthattookthemthroughtherichhistoryofParamountStudio’sfilms,actors,props,andsets.Theexperiencegavethemaninsidelookonhowmoviemagicismade. Thetourwasaneyeopenerformanyofthebroadcastingstudents,asthiswastheirfirsttimevisitingamotionpicturefilmstudio.“Iwillbewatchingmyfavoritemovieswithanewsetofeyes”saidstudentWilson Louis.

City College Students in Action hispastspring,theAcademicDepartmentoftheFortLauderdalecampusheld Simulation Day;aninter-departmentalquarterlycollaborationdesignedto highlightCityCollegestudentsinactionapplyingwhattheyhavelearned. Thesimulationscenariobeganwhenalawnworkercuthislegandgoesintothedoctor’sofficeofthebuildinghewasworkingat.ThepatientwasinitiallyassistedbyAlliedHealthDepartmentstudents,whoworkedtostopthebleedingandcalled911.EMSDepartmentstudentsreportedtothescene,stabilizedthepatient,andthentransportedthepatienttotheemergencyroom.Atthehospital,NursingandSurgicalTechnologyDepartmentstudentsassessed,prepped,andaidedwithsurgery. Inthesecondscenario,Business,LegalAssisting,andPrivateInvestigationDepartmentstudentsparticipatedinamocktrialaboutthedefectivelawntoolthatcausedtheinjury.PrivateInvestigationstudentsprovidedtheevidence,whileLegalAssistingstudentsactedasboththejudgeandtheattorneys.BusinessDepartmentstudentsactedasbothwitnessesandjurors.Themocktrialendedwithaconvictionofthemanufacturer.Inaddition,theBroadcastingDepartmentprovidedlivecoverageofbothsimulationscenarios,andrecordedthemforreview. Thesimulationprovidedfacultyanopportunitytoobservehowstudentsareapplyingtheirknowledge,whilegivingstudentsachancetolearnthroughhandsonparticipationandobservationoftheirpeers.

R ecently,CityCollegeparticipatedinthe4thAnnualCareer DaywiththeBoys and Girls Club of Broward County.High schoolagemembersoftheClubwerepresentedinformationonvariouscareerchoicesbyover17colleges.CityCollegeAdmissionRepresentatives,alongwithseveralBroadcastingStudentAmbassadors,didpresentationsoncareersinthefieldofBroadcastingandPrivateInvestigation;usingacameraandfingerprintmachinetodemonstratesomeofthetypesofequipmenttheycouldworkwith.Theeventprovidedagreatchanceforstudentstoseeallthepossibleopportunitiesavailabletothem.

Since1965,ithasbeenthemissionoftheBoys&GirlsClubsofBrowardCountytoenableallyoungpeople,especiallythosewhoneeditmost,toreachtheirfullpotentialasproductive,caring,andresponsiblecitizens.Theirgoalisforallmemberstograduatefromhighschoolwithaplanforthefuture;demonstrategoodcharacterandcitizenshipbyparticipatinginleadershiptrainingandvolunteeringincommunityserviceprojects;andengageinsportsandactivitiesthatpromoteahealthylifestyle.

Whenitcomestoseekingemployment,thoseabovetheageof50bringfarmorethanjustexperience,especiallyiftheyareVeterans.Theybringtraitssuchasleadership,problemsolvingskills,andadeterminationtogetthejobdoneright,thefirsttime. SeasonedVeteransunderstandthevalueofthingsthatarevitaltoanyunit,militaryorcivilian,suchasdependability,honesty,andintegrity.Additionally,beingseasonedgivesthemtheaddedbenefitofhavingtheoutlookandwisdomthatonlytimeandexperiencecangive.Leadership Ontwoseparateoccasions,whileservingintheUnitedStatesAirForce,Iwaspromoted,asaStaffSergeant,tothepositionofNonCommissionedOfficerinCharge(NCOIC)oftheMidShiftAvionicsShopfortheF-111aircraft;onceatCannonAirForceBase,Clovis,NewMexico,andtheotheratRoyalAirForce(RAF)Lakenheath,England.Inthisposition,Ioversawtheentireshopandallofitsfunctions. Lifetimecivilianandmilitarybenefit:Iencounteredmanytypesofsituationsrequiringmetomakemajordecisions,setschedules,assignduties,andcoordinatewithothershopsinordertoaccomplishthemission. DuringmytouratRAFLakenheath,IcoordinatedremotesupportforourDeployedAvionicsShopatTiaf,SaudiArabia,duringOperationDesertStorm.Heretoo,manychallengeswerefacedandmetduringanactualwar-timesituation.Problem Solving Skills AtRAFLakenheath,ourshopwaslocatedinanundergroundfacility,withverylimitedfloorspace.DuringOperationDesertStorm,Ideveloped,implemented,andsupervisedasuitablefloorplanandchange-overforthenewincomingF-15testequipmentandcrewwhilesimultaneouslyremovingtheF-111testequipmentandcrew;nosmalltask,especiallyduringanongoingwar. Normaldailyroutinesareonething,butbeinginthemilitaryduringwarissomethingelseagain.ManytimesIsawtheeffectsofthestrainoftheenormouspressuresthattheAirmenwereundertofulfillthemissionrequirements,andhoweachreactedtoit. Sometimesaquickresponsewasrequired,sometimesfillinginforthemwhiletheygotamuch-neededbreak.Beingabletotellwhendisciplinewasneededandwhenitwasnot,solvedmanyproblemsandeasedthefearsofgettingintotroubleforsomeminorthing. Beingseasonedpresentedthana“fatherfigure”manyoftheseyoungAirmenneededtofeel.Resolvingmentalfatigue,throughpsychologicalempowerment,weincreasedmorale.Takingadvantageofdirectandindirectinfluence,seasonedveteranshelpedourunittoachieveandmaintainaFullyMissionCapablestatusandultimatelyhelpedourmilitarywinthewar.Commitment AsaNonCommissionedOfficer(NCO),oneisnotonlyaSupervisor,butatrainer,manager,scheduler,andcounselor.IntheAirForce,thenormaldutydayis8hours,butduringanexercise,oreveninwartime,youtrainlikeyoufight:whateverittakes.Theshiftscouldbefrom8,16,24,oreven36hours,whateverwasrequiredtoaccomplishthemission.Beingseasoned,oneunderstandscommitmenttogoalattainment,thisisourway. ManytimesIsleptattheshopbecausethejobrequiredthatIbetherearoundtheclock.AndmanytimesIworkedtripleshiftssothatsomeoftheyounger,lessexperiencedtroopscouldgetfood,catchaquicknap,orwritealetterhome;allthingsthatgreatlycontributedtotheoverallsuccessofthemission.Also,timeslikethesepresentedtheperfectopportunitytogiveadditionaltrainingundercircumstancesandconditionsthatwouldotherwisebeextremelydifficulttoreproduce,sothetrainingwasdoublyvaluable.Employer’s Value FortheseasonedVeterans50andabove,everythingbeginswithattitude.BeingaVeteranmeansthatapersonhasbeenbothmilitaryandcivilian.Assuch,theVethasseenandexperiencedthingsmostotherpeoplewillneverexperience.Therearehowever,somethingsthatarejustcommontolife,eithermilitaryorcivilian.Stressisabigfactorinbothkindsoflife,andtheVeteranhasseenhisorhershareandknowsfirst-handhowtohandleit.Byruleofthumb,first,takeadeepbreath,analyzethesituation,choosethebestcourseofaction,andgoforit!Thereisno“I”intheword“TEAM”,andmoreoftenthannot,itisateameffortthatmakesthedifference. Anotherfactorisrecognition.TheVetknowstheimportanceofrecognizingwhenajobiswelldone,andjusthowgooditmakesthejuniorpersonfeeltoberecognizedfortheirperformance.Andlastly,morale.Thisisonefactorthatcanmakeorbreakanyteamorcivilianorganization,andtheVetisalltooawareofthis. Moraleisthegluethatholdsaunittogether,andtheunitisonlyasstrongasitsmorale.Findaunitwithgoodmorale,andyouwillfindagoodleaderthereaswell.Veteransarenotbetterthananyoneelse,buttheydohavemoreexperienceinmoreareasthanmostothers,andtheyhavealsobeentestedunderfire,so,hireaVet!
