What is an apprentice? An apprentice is an employed worker who learns a recognized craft

or trade requiring one or more years of classroom and on-the-job

training, prior to being considered a qualified skilled journeyman.

Palm Beach State College offers an accredited, respected, and

progressive building trades apprenticeship program. Palm Beach

State instructors are credentialed journeymen with long-term

industry experience. As an apprentice, you will build the framework

for a solid future.

The oldest form of skill development in theworld is as important as ever.Earliest records from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome reveal that

apprenticeship was a common way of passing along skills. Today,

Palm Beach State College trains up to 1,000 students annually in

seven registered apprenticeship programs in five different building

trades. Each of the apprentice ship programs contribute to local

industry by promoting a skilled, competent workforce with high-

wage jobs. Registered apprenticeship training programs help to

FireSprinklerSprinkler fitters install and

maintain sprinkler fire protection

systems in new construction and

in existing structures. They work

with wet fire and dry-pipe systems

as well as different types of

preaction/deluge systems.

Brick & Block MasonryMasonry workers construct homes, apartments,

shopping centers, schools and other buildings.

Bricklayers and blocklayers build the exterior

and interior walls of buildings.

Plumbing Plumbers learn the codes and plumbing

systems to become licensed plumbers.

Today’s plumber is required to have technical

skills that support complex work related to

residential, industrial and commercial

installation projects. The apprenticeship

program allows apprentices to advance

their career by gaining knowledge in

air/water/piping, natural and LP gas piping,

medical gas systems, repair and remodeling

sanitary waste and ventilation systems,

waste water treatment, water supply, and

OSHA safety.

HVAC TechHeating, ventilation, air conditioning

and refrigeration (HVAC/R) technicians

install and repair systems that control

temperature, humidity and total air

quality in commercial, residential and

industrial buildings as well as

refrigeration systems that make it

possible to store and transport food,

medicine and other perishable items.

ElectricalElectrical apprentices learn the codes

and electrical systems to become

licensed electricians. Electricians install,

maintain and repair elec trical systems

for residential, commercial and

industrial facilities. They work with

project layout, conduit systems, panels,

wires and cables, lighting systems, fire

alarms, control systems, programmable

logic controllers, instrumentation, sound

and communication systems, termi nating

transformers and fiber optic cable.

alm Beach State College’s

building trade apprenticeship

programs, offered through private-

sector sponsors, allow you to earn

journeyperson status in three to

five years after program

completion. As a bonus, you will

not pay tuition for your classes.

Palm Beach State College can help

you build a future in these high-

demand, high-wage occupations

through the seven apprenticeship

programs offered. In addition,

journeymen can receive 24 credits

toward the Industrial Management

Technology A .S. degree program.

Many choices, one objectiveLearn how to do the job through

hands-on training under the

direction of a skilled journeyman

during the day. Learn the

underlying theories behind the

job by taking related technical

instruction classes two evenings

a week.

You can choose your

apprenticeship from several

different trades. They all have this

in common: They are designed to

produce skilled journeymen fully

competent in all aspects of a

specific high-skill, high-wage

occupation.

You will need a Florida driver

license and reliable transportation.

Some programs require a high

school diploma, GED and/or

elective drug testing; call to find

out specific requirements at
