“I always had an interest in engineering and enjoyed breaking things down to their components to see how they worked and building them back up. I saw an advert for an apprentice scheme for Babcock to work on a local RAF base and straight away I thought I can do that. I take each opportunity as it comes and my work has taken me to several other sites across the UK and even abroad on ‘detachments’.

Babcock has provided me with a wealth of training on health and safety. Every course and qualification I gain gives me more and more responsibility as I utilise what I learn in the section.

I have really enjoyed my training with Babcock and look forward to progressing my career and seeing what other opportunities working for the company brings. If somebody asked me if I would recommend an apprentice program with Babcock my answer would be a firm yes!”

“When I started the apprenticeship I was 23 years old, so slightly older than some of other apprentices. I had already done A levels and after that had worked in a completely unrelated job for five years. I was always very interested in mechanics and spent a lot of time working on mine and my friends’ cars.

As Babcock is such a large company, there is scope for progressing my career in the future. This could include undertaking more responsibility on the shop floor as an inspector or team leader. There are also prospects for going into an office based job such as technical services, planning, or management.

I have enjoyed my time so far doing an apprenticeship at Babcock and would recommend it to anyone interested in mechanics. It’s a great way to get into the industry and an ideal start to your career.”

“I saw the opportunity to be a candidate for the Babcock apprenticeship programme. A different role altogether than planned, but the possibility to work on aircraft made it very appealing to me. Everyone was willing to give me their time and I thoroughly enjoyed working in an enthusiastic environment.

At present I am currently studying my Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Technology and will be starting my level 4 NVQ diploma in engineering. I’m very grateful to everyone that has helped and allowed me the opportunity to follow my career aspirations with Babcock.”
