• I have been meaning to write to you guys about XXXX ! 

• He is doing great .... He is doing an apprenticeship in logistics and looking to become a transport co -ordinator next year ... This has been so good for him ... He struggled with studying for A levels and didn’t really know what he wanted to do ... University didn't feel like it was meant for XXXX... This apprenticeship has changed him so much already ... He has got responsibility and respect from his employers and has grown so much in confidence and people skills ... We are really proud of him ...

• I would really recommend apprenticeships as an option for those students not wishing to go to Uni ... XXXX has high ambitions and this seems to be a door for him which will lead to opportunities we couldn't have thought of

• Although his grades weren't amazing he is on a great path !

Apprenticeships an Overview

• A job with a specific training programme

• There are three levels of Apprenticeship

An Apprenticeship – level 2

An Advanced Apprenticeship – level 3

A Higher Apprenticeship – level 4

• An Apprenticeship generally takes between one to three years.

• Apprenticeships are a mixture of on and off the job training.

• Apprentices get paid while they learn.

• Off the job training is delivered by a learning provider which could be a specialist provider or an FE College.

The Framework An Apprenticeship is made up of three parts

1. A Technical Certificate at level 2, 3 or 4

Examples:

– Supporting Youth Work Level 2 and 3 awarded by City & Guilds

– Diploma in Youth Work Level 3 awarded by ABC

2. A Competence based NVQ

Example:

– Youth Work Level 2 or 3

3. Functional Skills

Example:

– Communication Level 2

Sometimes there are additional requirements:

– An appointed first aid person - First Aid Certificate

– Health and Safety unit (for level 3)

Who are Apprenticeships for?

• Individuals who want a work-based learning approach to gaining qualifications – with a view to working towards Higher Apprenticeships and a Foundation Degree.

• Paid staff aged 16 to 64 years in most roles and occupations.

• If you start an apprenticeship before your 19th birthday your training costs are paid by the government. If you start when you are 19 or over your employer has to pay half of your training costs.

• You can not start an apprenticeship if you have been to University.

Applying for an Apprenticeship

Applying for an Apprenticeship – the main ways

1. Apply via the National Apprenticeship Service Website – most vacancies are advertised via this website. You have to register.

2. Via a training provider – you get the most support this way – some of the training providers will be in college next week so make sure you sign up with them but indicating you are looking for an apprenticeship to start after June 2016.

3. Direct with a company – on-line via their website. You need to keep checking websites of employers you would like to work for.
