Introduction

This is the eleventh edition of Approved Pesticides for use on Vegetable Crops, which wasfirst published in 1998. The following abbreviations have been used: HI – Harvest Interval,Max No. – maximum number of sprays allowed, OLA – off-label approval, EUA – EmergencyUse Authorisation, DR – deregistered.

One new crop has been added to the book – Chinese Cabbage, which also covers theclosely related Pak Choi. Off-labels are included, brief details of which are included in theAppendix of this publication, listed in alphabetical order. Changes made since the last editionare listed at the end of the book along with a commentary highlighting the main points.

This publication is intended to provide growers with a quick reference to the commonlyavailable approved pesticides, which can be used on vegetable crops. Not all genericproducts are mentioned. The term pesticide includes fungicides, insecticides andherbicides. Molluscicides (slug pellets) are not included as most products can be appliedacross all crops with the exception of Draza Elite, which has specific crops listed on the label– hence its inclusion.

The Pesticide Control Service (PCS) of the Department of Agriculture has changed its nameto the Pesticide Registration and Control Division (PRCD). The PRCD is responsible forimplementing pesticide legislation and publish an annual list of authorised pesticides themost recent being Pesticides 2012. This can be downloaded from the Department’swebsite, www.pcs.agriculture.gov.ie, where you will also find a searchable database.

Once a pesticide is cleared for use the onus is on the grower to use that product responsibly. The instructions for the correct use of a pesticide are on the product label, which is a legallybinding document that should be read carefully. By law, a grower can use a pesticide on acrop only if its use is specified on the label. The label also provides a precise summary ofprecautions to be taken in relation to how a pesticide is handled, applied and stored.

Take note that in addition to on-label uses there are several off-label applications (Extensionof Field of Use). Growers must be in possession of the relevant Extension document beforeuse. Full details are available from the Teagasc Food Assurance website at the followingaddress: www.teagasc.ie/faol (note new web address); on the opening page click on CropsBest Practice > Extension of Field of Use. There is also an off-label listing available on thePCS website. Pesticide Postings, part of the Teagasc off-label website, aims to keep theindustry updated with changes taking place in the world of horticultural pesticides.

Growers need to be aware that off-label uses are applied at their own risk and that theapplication rates quoted need to be tested for crop safety purposes on a small area first.Proceed with caution in using off-label recommendations on your crops as damage mayoccur. Always consult with your crop adviser before use. Let the user beware.

To ensure compliance with the regulations and to reassure consumers that the food they eatis safe, the Department regularly test for pesticide residues on a range of foodstuffs, including vegetables. Samples are taken at wholesale level and if a residue is detected itmust not exceed the Maximum Residue Level (MRL). MRL’s have been established for allpesticides and represent the maximum residue that should arise in food when pesticides arecorrectly used.

Every effort has been made to ensure that the details in this book are correct. However thedefinitive source of information on pesticides is the PRCD, and if you have any doubts aboutthe contents of a product label telephone 01-615 7552.

Commentary on 2011

During the past year there’s been a constant stream of new products arriving and some oldones leaving as can be seen from the changes made since the previous edition.

New productsThe vast majority of new uses for vegetable crops stem from the eighteen new off-labels thatwere added during the year. Most are based on existing plant protection products but therewere two very welcome arrivals – Dual Gold and Wing P. Both of these are herbicides thatcover a broad range of crops – brassicas, alliums, beetroot and French beans. Salad onionsdid well in 2011 – eleven new products added to the range.

Disappearing productsAliette is gone due to non compliance issues and Previcur N was revoked on 30 September2011. But both the actives, fosetyl and propamocarb, are still available in Previcur Energy. This product was recently reregistered and damping off in seedling brassicas was added, inaddition to the old uses. Basilex was deregistered on 13 January 2011 and Scotts thecompany who market the product hoped to get a reformulated version through a newregistration process. However they missed the deadline for submission to the PCS andhence the product’s deletion. However the product is being re-evaluated in the UK and if itpasses we will be in a position to mutually recognize this registration and register the productin Ireland. One of the last of the OP pesticides, dimethoate, made its final exit in 2011.

CeleryThis continues to be the Cinderella crop of the vegetable world. The main problem is lack ofan effective aphicide – we need to obtain either Plenum or Aphox for this crop. Both areavailable as off-labels in the UK. We have had the use of Bravo for the past number ofseasons in the guise of an Emergency Use for leaf spot control but it looks unlikely that we’llget it this year.

Mancozeb2011 saw a welcome return of mancozeb (Dithane DF) for outdoor lettuce and it was alsoadded to onions and scallions as an off-label. This active is important in relation to stoppingthe build up of resistance to the newer systemic fungicides that we use for downy mildewand blight in crops like lettuce, onions and potatoes. Certain member states in the EU areintent on getting rid of mancozeb but it seems to be safe until 2015 at least.

BravoBravo was reregistered last year and we lost all horticultural uses from the label. The oldBravo 500 (PCS 00198) had on-label use for cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts andonion with an off-label use on broccoli – and the use-up period is to 14 December 2012. Thenew Bravo (PCS 03452) has only cereals on the label but a new off-label has reinstatedBrussels sprouts, cauliflower and onions with new uses on salad onion, leeks andasparagus. But take note that CT 500, the Bravo lookalike product from DHM is currentlyregistered but will be revoked on 14 May 2012 (use-up to 14 November 2013) – this haslabel approval for use on cabbage, amongst other crops. Chlorothalonil is also available inmixtures in Amistar Opti and Folio Gold.

Deregistration of chemicalsThere’s a new law regarding deregistered products by way of Regulation 1107 of 2009(Article 20) which came into force in June 2011. It has changed several aspects of thederegistration process. Following the date of deregistration retailers have 6 months to sellthe product and growers have 18 months to use the product - that’s a 6 month extensionover the old 12 month use up period. But the grower will now have to dispose of anyunused product after the 18 month period - which can be costly. Prior to this growers wereentitled to keep deregistered chemicals in their chemical store for as long as they wanted.
