Approximation ( Rounding)Feb. 2015
Students should be able to Grasp the
following:
1- Meaning of Approximation (Rounding).
2- Why do we approximate numbers ?.
3- Types of Approximation (Ten, Hundred,
Thousand, ..etc ,Tenth , …etc).
4- Being able to approximate numbers easily –
using strategies learnt - by themselves.

Approximation :
Nearest Number ;)
3
What do we mean by approximation ?
Replacing the exact number, by another which is : 1- Simpler . 2- Near to it.
Example :
399 400
49.99 50
2.567 3
4950.22278 4950
3400.651 3400.7
How ?

.& So on ..

Now let’s stick to Cases (Types) of Approximation
(Rounding)
TO let it be more Easier when: Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, & Dividing them.
Why do we approximate numbers ( Why
Rounding) ?

SUMMARY
Assign well what’s required ; whether it’s nearest : ( Unit, Ten, Hundred, Thousand, ..
Or Tenth ).
Steps of solution
Assign the certain PLACE of required approximation ; whether the place is ( 1, 10,
100, 1000, … etc , or 0.1) , & write this place - moving from the right to the left – up
to the number needed to be approximated.
CIRCLE the interested place detected ( It’s the number under the column of number
”1“ ).
i.e: If I’m interested in place 100 (nearest hundred), & my number is 215, this means
I should circle the number “2” ( as 2 is under the column of 1 in this case).
21
3
Look at the number Near to the Circled one. If the number is > or = 5 (greater than or
equals 5 ), then the circled number will be increased by “1”. But if it was < or = 5
(less than or equals 5 ), Then the circled number will be kept as it is.
i.e: the number 2 will be as it is in our example of approximating 215.
Any other Number on the right to the Circled number, will be replaced by zero.
Hence: In our example, the number 215 = 300 approximately.
