Course Assessment

Your overall course grade is meant to assess your academic performance inside and outside of the classroom (relative to the course materials). The assessment tools used do not measure your overall potential as a person nor do they assess your overall intelligence or worth. A variety of assessment/grading tools were designed to assess your knowledge, skills and achievement of the course objectives; they are presented in the table below, then each of them is described briefly in the sections that follow.

Assessment Marks % Due DatesWeekly open book tests 36 (12 x 3) See course roadmapHRM paper 25Final Examination 39 During final exam period

Weekly Open Book Tests (36%). You will complete a timed, open-book multiple-choice test for each lesson. Each test will contain 15 multiple-choice questions that pertain to the required reading and the lecture material for that week only (they are not cumulative). Once you begin the test, you will have 20 minutes to complete it. You must complete the test in one sitting, so make sure that you do not have any distractions when you decide to complete it. You must complete the test by Friday of each lesson week at 5pm. The purpose of this assessment is to test your learning of each week’s topic, and also to keep you on track in this course.

Temp Paper (25%). Douglas Coupland is a Canadian novelist. He has published over 20 books, one of which is the influential Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture. In November, 2013, Coupland wrote a special novelette-series for the Toronto Metro newspaper called “The Temp.” The protagonist is called Shannon. He stated, “You already know Shannon – everyone knows Shannon – you may well be Shannon. She’s that slightly geeky gal who temps at every office you’ve ever worked at” (Metro, November 4, p. 3). In this series, you will read about many problems TWK, the 1

organization where Shannon works (and potentially have a few giggles at some of the antics). In this assignment, you will be put into the position of Director of Human Resources and asked to develop an HR strategy that will transform the organization to improve morale and productivity. Find more information on this assignment on Moodle.

Final Examination (39%). The exam will be held during the formal examination period for the semester, in a room and location to be announced closer to the exam date. The final exam will cover material from the entire semester. It will include both multiple choice questions, and short answer questions.

Important Policies:

Missed Examination: In accordance with the University Policy, medical documentation will be required when an examination is missed, in order to defer the final exam. A Deferred Standing Agreement must be submitted to the School of Administrative Studies within one week of the missed exam. Students who miss the final exam may petition to write a deferred exam. No make-up dates will be offered during this term.

Medical Documentation: Attending Physician’s Statement. If any grading component is missed due to illness, appropriate documentation must be provided to the course director within two weeks of the missed work. The only acceptable documentation that can be used to support an absence due to illness is an Attending Physician’s Statement dated within two days of the missed component. A soft copy of this form is available from the Registrar’s website at: http://www.atkinson.yorku.ca/Council/Students/physicianStatement.pdf . Please note that a “doctor’s note”, typically written on a prescription pad, is not acceptable.

Late Assignments: Late submission of assignments requires permission obtained from the instructor prior to the assignment's due date. Students will not be given extensions due to travel (employment, vacations), weddings or other personal commitments. An opportunity to hand-in late assignments without penalty will be given for legitimate reasons such as illness, personal or family emergencies, or bereavement only. However, as a matter of fairness to all students, you will be required to support any request for an excused late assignment with written documentation. For example, such documentation might consist of a doctor’s certificate (for an illness), an obituary or funeral announcement (for a bereavement). If you have questions about what constitutes acceptable documentation, please ask the instructor.

If permission was not obtained, an assignment submitted 1 day late will receive a 10 percentage point penalty; 2 days late will receive a 20 percentage penalty; work 3 or more days late will not be accepted and the student will receive a 0.
