By Bill Vint - PBA PORTLAND, Maine – Gradually, Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., is beginning to believe in himself, and thanks to a momen- tary burst of confidence, the 30- year-old left-hander rolled his way to a two-game sweep of 16- time Professional Bowlers Association title winner Tommy Jones in the best-of-three-game title match of the bowlingball.com PBA Maine Shootout at Bayside Bowl. After winning a 2-1 decision over Michael Markin of Tafton, Pa., in the Round of 64, and a 2-0 sweep of Ronnie Russell of Marion, Ind., in the Round of 32, Ciminelli completed his run to his sixth PBA Tour title and the $10,000 first prize with best-of-three-game victories over Shawn Maldonado of Houston, Texas; Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, and Tim Mack of Indianapolis before rolling past Jones in the title match, 255-213 and 225-203. “I caught these guys at the right time on the right pairs of lanes,” Ciminelli said. “For once, everything fell in place for me. to his sixth PBA Tour title and the $10,000 first prize

with best-of-three-game victories over Shawn

Maldonado of Houston, Texas; Wes Malott of

Pflugerville, Texas, and Tim Mack of Indianapolis

before rolling past Jones in the title match, 255-213

and 225-203.

“I caught these guys at the right time on the right

fell in place for me. I didn’t think

I had a chance to win this tourna-

ment, but I kept my head down

and kept fighting.”

A year ago, Ciminelli’s confi-

dence had bottomed out so badly

United States Bowling Congress

Youth members have been select-

ed to receive the 2016 Earl

Anthony Memorial Scholarship in

recognition of their academic

achievements and community

service.

The International Bowling

Campus Youth Committee deter-

mined the recipients of the Earl Anthony Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded

in honor of the late USBC and Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer who

was dedicated to assisting youth bowlers. The 2016 award winners each will receive

a $5,000 scholarship.

The 2016 Earl Anthony Memorial Scholarship recipients are:

• Cyan Baker, Chicago

• McKenna Collier, Brick, New Jersey

• Lauren Douglas, Phoenix

• Richard Hochecker IV, Ballwin, Missouri

• Zachary Marlow, Gulfport, Mississippi

Baker is a senior at Lindblom Math and Science holds a 4.6 grade-point average

(4.0 scale). A National Honor

Society school chapter vice pres-

ident, she was one of only 80 stu-

dents to receive a $10,000

Nordstrom Scholarship in 2015.

She is a four-year girls varsity

bowling team member and also

was selected as an Illinois State

scholar by the Illinois Student

John Kamenitsky of Stratford,

Connecticut, became the first

bowler of the 2016 USBC Open

Championships to celebrate 50

years of tournament participation.

The 84-year-old right-hander is

one of 20 bowlers scheduled to

reach the milestone this year, and

he received a plaque, chevron and

diamond lapel pin March 11 to

commemorate his entrance into

the event's 50-Year Club.

Kamenitsky made his Open

Championships debut at the 1966

edition in Rochester, New York,

which was held at what was then

the Rochester Community War

Memorial, the home of the

Rochester Americans of the

American Hockey League.

The journey to five decades at

the Open Championships was due

in part to Kamenitsky's time work-

ing with his local USBC associa-

tion.

"When I reached my 25th year, I

was on the association board, and

I would plan my time at the tour-

nament around the convention,"

said Kamenitsky, an association

director with the Fairfield County

(Conn.) USBC. "Now, I come

with my friends to just have a

great time."

With his 2016 Open

Championships concluded,

Kamenitsky owns a career pinfall

of 76,773, a 171 average.

Collier has volunteered more

than 250 hours of time working

with the Brick Rotary Club,

assisted with setup and clean-

up for school dances as part of

the Student Government

Association, participated in

school fundraising efforts and

served as a volunteer bowling

coach at her local center.

Douglas currently is a junior

at the University of St. Francis

(Illinois), where she possesses a

3.89 GPA (4.0 scale) and com-

petes on the lanes for the

Fighting Saints. Collegiately,

she has garnered several aca-

demic honors during her career

which includes a stop at the

University of Alabama-

Birmingham. She has been

named a National Tenpin

Coaches Association Academic

All-American, selected to the

Dean’s List, earned a

Conference USA

Commissioner’s Academic

Medal and earned an Athletic

Director’s Honor Roll selec-

tion.

She is a member of the

Student-Athlete Advisory

Committee (SAAC) where

she’s participated in campus

food drives, and currently is

aiding a campus initiative to

end sexual violence as part of

the nationwide, “It’s On Us”

campaign. She also has volun-

teered at the Ronald McDonald

House, Greater Birmingham

Humane Society and Children’s

Hospital of Alabama.

Hochecker, who attends South

Tech High School with a

weighted GPA of 3.79 (4.0

scale), has taken several AP and

Honors classes. He is a member

of the National Honor Society,

National Technical Honor

Society and the South Tech

Ambassador program. He’s also

earned several awards including

Shop Assistant, Consistent

Outstanding Math Performance

and Math Student of the Month.

He was elected as a youth

director to the St. Louis USBC

Board of Directors, and has

served as a member of the St.

Louis USBC Youth Committee,

Missouri State USBC Youth

Committee and as chairman of

the Publicity Committee. This

is Hochecker’s second USBC

honor after being selected as

the 2014 USBC Male Youth

Ambassador of the Year.

Marlow, a senior at Bay High

School, holds a weighted GPA

of 4.21 and is a member of the

National Honor Society, a four-

year member of the Alpha

Honor Roll and Woodman of

the Year award winner in U.S.

history. He is a member of the

Marksmanship team, Academic

Bowl team, Awareness

Presentation team, Physical

Training team and the Spanish

He’s held several JROTC staff

positions including WINGS
