Notes: A. Solving by using square roots can happen only when there is no 'b' term.

B. Every Quadratic can be solved by completing the square; check first to see if the equation can be factored

Warm-Up/Final Exam Review:

Write the equation which gives the following solutions: 0, 3

Factoring Polynomials & Quadratic Equations

1. T or F, Are Quadratic Equations Polynomials?2. That's right, but Quadratic Equations are polynomials with restrictions. What requirements define Quadratics?

Factor the following equations:

x2 + 2x = 3

x2 + 10x + 30 = 0

The length of a rectangle is 8 inches more than the width. The area of the rectangle is 308 sq. inches. Find the length and width by completing the square.Area = l x w. w(w + 8)

= 308w2 + 8w = 308

w2 + 8w + 16 = 324

(w + 4)2 = 324

(w + 4) = √324

(w + 4) = √324

(w + 4) = √81•4 = 18

w = -4 ± 18; w = -22, w = 14, l = 22
