The Big Rap-Up
The RIAA has announced the first gold single of the year, and it's Salt-N-Pepa's rap crossover 'Tush It." Theiralbum. Hot, Cool & Vicious on Next Plateau, has goneplatinum. Three or four years ago there were plenty of
people who would have told you rap was nothing more than afad, just trashy street rhyme over basic rhythm. So what's it allmean?
First off, it's a stunning achievement for the two youngwomen, their producer Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor, and NextPlateau. Secondly, it's proof positive that all those naysayers
were dead wrong. As if proof was still needed after Run-DMC'ssuccess with "Walk This Way," or the Beastie Boy's multi-platinum debut. Still, those same naysayers will tell you that"Walk This Way" was only a hit because it was a Aerosmithremake, that the Beasties were a goof, and that "Push It" is a popsong and not rap.
The time came long ago for talk like that to stop. This is notrend we're alerting you to; the public likes this stuff and thepublic buys this stuff. These are the facts, and the facts are goldand platinum records. Rap, and dance music in general, is asmusically sophisticated, vital, self-sustaining, and marketableas any metal, AOR, or MOR pop. The success of Salt-N-Pepa ora hard-core club record like M/A/R/R/S' "Pump Up TheVolume" should prove that.
With house music following rap from the underground intothe mainstream maybe we should all listen up to Joseph "Run"Simmons of Run-DMC who said it plain and simple the nightof the Grammy Awards: "Rap is music." Word.

Henry Lee SummerBy Tom De Savia
LOS ANGELES - Recently, duringa photo shoot in Hollywood, Califor-nia, CBS Associated recording artistHenry Lee Summer was informedthat his debut single had gone Top 40.The Brazil, Indiana (pop. 5,000) na-tive ran onto the streets of glitter city
to announce to passers-by andspeeding cars "Henry Lee here! Top40 Henry Lee!"
In today's competitive radio scene- where established artists dominatethe airwaves - it is unusual andrefreshing to see an artist's debut
single garner such amazing out-of-the-box acceptance. It is equally im-
pressive to see a song which does notsound like the predictable packagedpop that dominates today's Top 40outlets do so well. But what isprobably most rewarding is seeingthe artist genuinely gratified andhumbly excited about the ac-complishment. One can almost hearthe buzz going around Brazil, In-diana right now: "It couldn't havehappened to a nicer guy."The single in question is "I Wish I
Had A Girl," the first off Summer'sself-titled debut LP, which is quicklyestablish the artist nationwide.Recently, Summer spoke to Cash Box,discussing the new album and hiscareer: "I figured that we would dopretty well onAOR radio because thealbum is an AOR kind of album... Iwanted to get Top 40 but I know howthe radio works and I know what thetrend is right now, but because it's apop song in the rock and roll vein Iwas hoping that [radio] would feelthe energy of the recording and theywould get the picture. Apparentlythey did.
"My song is definitely not the kindof song you're used to hearing [onTop 40 radio], so I think that meansthat they are giving people chances...
it shows you that radio is changingand they are reaching out and ex-panding their playlists."
Henry Lee Summer^
Although new to mainstreai^audiences, singer/songwriter Henrv^Lee Summer is no newcomer to thefield of rock and roll music. For years^Summer had been building up a localfollowing in his native Indiana - cor^''
sistently playing to SRO crowds andgamering a tremendous amount Qt,local airplay with his various inde-
pendent releases. Finally, in Octoberof 1986, Summer was signed to CBSAssociated Records.
When did a small-town boy decidfrtthat music was his destiny? "I neverreally did decide," Summer ex-
,
plained. "It just sort of fell into place.
I always loved playing music.didn't ever think 'gee, 1 think I can
make enough money to do it for a'Tliving now'." Summer credits suchearly influences as Elvis Presley, TheBeatles as well as the Motown /Stax.*soul of the sixties coupled with th^of contemporary artists such as BmcqSpringsteen, John Cougar Mellen-camp and Bob Seger - his musictimes is reminiscent of all, yet still
retains an obvious freshness and^originality.
^'The main thing that I want to d^^)
is continue to make records - if 1could do that I'll consider that the**"success 1 want. As long as you can ,make records you can say what youwant to say and you can go out and_‘play and people will know yourmusic." c
TALENT ON STAGE
C2lammin'Watusis
THE RITZ, NEW YORK CITY -Pegged as a skate-thrash band be-
cause of one tribute to sidewalk sur-
fers ("Skt, Skt, Skt"), and ridiculed
because they open their major label
debut with "Won't Sell Out" (atribute to their own love of playingmusic just for the fun of it), Chicago's
Slammin' Watusis will be the first to
tell you it just ain't fair. They don'tskate, only occasionally thrash, and
shouldn't be expected to make senseof the Amerindie underground'stroubled relationship to the
mainstream.
Their album, Slammin Watusis
(Epic), is crammed with what thisquintet has to offer: loud, brash,^
metallic glitter pop filtered through
amphetamine paranoia and lacecV
with a burping, brawling sax that
sounds for all the world like Jolu\t,
Coltrane staring into the great void of
chicken shack R&B and strip jointbump & grind. If that sounds like alittle too much, it is. The WatusCmagic is flattened on disc; it's n*^
wonder people mistakenly pigeonshole them as some sort of post-^hardcore amalgam of disperate ele-ments fused into a dense, snarling'’
mass. Captured in the single dimen-
sion of black vinyl it all sounds a lit-
tie confusing.
But onstage at the Ritz, Friday,
March 18, there was a little room to
spread out, and that density gave
way to a more comprehensible.

NEW FACES TO WATCHShannon Gibbons

EAST COASTINGS
NEW YORK - Everywhere you^um, record labels have been maldngroom amongst the heavy metal and'^eoclassic-retropunk for singerssinging Great American Songs. You
^!?.ow, standards by guys like Kern,Berlin, and Gershwin, and aspiringstandards by guys like Sondheim,Sondheim and Sondheim.Oddly enough, Italy's PolyGram-
^istributed Soul Note Records, a jazzlabel, is where you'd expect to have
^'fi’iund such records for years. ButSoul Note, which is root^ in avant-g^rde and bebop, hadn't shownmuch of an inclination to sign stand-ards singers imtil the release late lastyear of Shannon Gibbons, the debutalbum by a singer who warbles Great.Apierican Songs in the GreatAmerican company of jazz veterans_Cecil Bridgewater, Kenny Barron,Rufus Reid and Ben Riley.
"I'm from Seattle, Washington byway of Alaska," says Shannon Gib-

area; sort of pop, in a band. And thej7fano player and I branched off fromthere and started doing standardsand more lounge-oriented material. We worked together for three or fouryears in Seattle and then I came to'^lew York."
Seattle, she says, provided lots ofwork for a talented singer of stand-j^fds. So why move to New York, aciity that ^provides little work fortalented singers of anything?
'
"I wanted to make a record, I.W&nted to pursue this on anotherlevel. For me, it seemed like the right^^hing to do. And it turned out that I^was on the right track. I also wanted‘^to. come to New York and be able tolisten to the music. You have visiting
ists coming into Jazz Alley every^^eek, but not anything like being
snarling richness. The SlamminWatusis worked harder and hadmore fun than most bands, moving'fOce mad from the moment they hitthe stage imtil the moment they left, tossing guitars and saxes in the air,
shaking their booties in theaudience's faces, throwing fists in the
.Smt, and generally behaving like they'enjoy playing live at a time when you?^'t figure out why most rock actsbother. They captured all the glam-'crash-thrill of 70s bubblegum-punkwhile avoiding the cartoonish''Qualities of Red Kross.j^The visual spectacle helped theBund a lot, not least because no twoBatusis look alike and you can sortijf make sense of their sound by
fdecoding their individual sartori^

able to go and hear Etta Jones up atthe West End one night, SarahVaughan down at the Blue Note thenext night, and Kenny Barron atBradley's another night. Eventhough I personally don't work asmuch here as I did on the west coast,I'm surrounded by such good musicthat it helps you grow and learn."And, needless to say, it helps you
meet musicians who know othermusicians who know the guys at therecord labels and...bingo!, an album. The album has helped lead to a tourof Japan and various work aroundthe country.
"I'm pleased as punch," saysShannon Gibbons. "But I'd like tomake another record as soon as pos-sible and keep that momentumgoing. There's always that anxiety:
'Oh, am I going to get the mostmileage out of this?' But you tend toforget that you can just keep onmaking records. There's no ne^ topanic. I don't mean to sound light-hearted about it. I'd just like to con-
tinue making records as long aspaople want to buy the records andrecord companies are ready toproduce them."
these songs.
Playing live the Watusis displayed
a well crafted sensibility lost onrecord. "Walking On Knives"sounded like overly agressive Top 40from the Twilight Zone, and some"Some Sex" (which may or may notbe a straight faced safe sex an-nouncement) was jazz-metal frompowerchord heaven. Mark Duranteslid to the lip of the stage to solo, nod-ding his guitar towards audiencemembers, like a faithful member ofthe Kiss Army (although he didcrank out the same fake Van Halennoodling more than once).Saxophone player Fast Frank Ravenblew inchoate blasts of farting poetry. And Lee Pope got a tear in his PJsfrom working so hard. The Slammin'Watusis should be touring the Southand West, opening for Fetchin' Bonesand the Red Hot Chih Peppers. Maythe world bow down to them as theyparade forth.

^NE STEPH UP ~ The big Carnegie Hdlconcert to celebrate the 80th birthday of
^ Stephane Grappelli (c) is coming up AprilI
14. Here, maldng plans with thehonoree, areparticipants Yo-Yo Ma (1) and RogerKellaway.
:iWORDS FROM RA -Sun Ra, bless his littleheart, performed a solopiano piece at Alice
Tully Hall the other day, as part of aSpotty jazz triple bill. Here, ifanybod^s interested, is what Sun"Ra had to say about himself in the^program notes:
"\ do not remember being bomtherefore I do not like to speak ofbirth as a self-authorized known
i.'fact. I think I am here but even thatthought might be some pro-creatorsdream-blueprint designed plans for
cosmo-computer reference. Thees-"^sence of me is of the Eternal SpiritBeing. The music is like my self: it
'is not born, IT HAPPENS.
'7ust say, I arrived on this planetsome other when at some seeming
[^point of then on possibly the leftside of now. True music is not
, born...it be: it is of cosmo-being gift-
magnificence. I can feel the spirit-
’fvibration of each place, person orwhatever,...is or ain't. By the way, I
' could sue a lot of people who havefalsely stated I was bom Herman
r'Blount."
Space, indeed, is the place.
NO BAND - Bobby McFerrin's^latest album, everybody is quick topoint out, is not a jazz album; it's apop album. Personally, I don't real-ly see it as much different from
"^^McFerrin's other albums - his jazzalbums - only that instead of therebeing one of him there's as many as14 of him. But they moved him
"from Blue Note to Manhattan tomake the point that THIS IS A POPALBUM. In any case, he's on theroad and, pop album or not, here
* are some dates and places: Tor-rance, CA (4/16), San Francisco(4/18), Calgary (4/20), Salt Lake
^jCity (4/22-23, with the WoodburyH^bance Company), Davis, CA^[4/25), San Francisco (4/28, with
^l^e Pickel Family Circus), Pit-^tsburgh (4/29), the famous MasseyHi Hall in Toronto (4/30), and Car-l^negie Hall (5/3). Other dates'll be
annoimced. And, no, don't expectMcFerrin to recreate the overdub-
bing shenanigans of the album.
TUNE UP - New York's NewSchool has a growing Jazz and Con-temporary Music Program with aheavyweight line-up of instmctors
- guys like Amie Lawrence, JonHendricks, Barry Harris, RolandHanna and Jimmy Heath. In anycase, they've been holding audi-tions for the fall semester and thelast two audition dates are April 22and May 20. If there's an aspiringjazz musician hanging around yourhouse or office, call (212) 741^58for the audition information.
FESTS - This is the time of yearwhen summer jazz festivalbrochures cause the demise ofscores of trees. I'll print this infor-
mation in the order I get it. Here's
a start:
The Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival, spon-sored by Japan's NTV Network, will take place August 26-28 atYamanaka Lake, located - youguessed it - at the base of Mt. New Orleans for the JazzFest thismonth, but who'd like to attend afestival of New Orleans-basedmusic, fear not. There's the Festa
New Orleans Music Ascona, set forJune 24 - July 4 in Ascona, Italy. It's
a schlep, sure, but among theperformers'll be Snooks Eaglin,Louis Nelson's New Orleans AllStars, Rockin' Sidney, the FriendlyTravelers and Clive Wilson'sOriginal Camelia Jazz Band. NewOrleans' USA Travel Agency isworking up tours to this one, andthey've even got a toll-free numberfor you to call: (800) 228-9711.BOPPING AROUND - Ken
Webb Enterprises, they of the 'JazzFrom the City" radio show, are nowplanning a "Jazz From The City"television show; call them at (212)402-1236 if you'd like to knowmore...Joe Williams and DaveGrusin will the the recipients ofhonoree doctorates at the BerkleeCollege of Music's May 14 com-mencement...You into saxophones?Go to Berlin May 4-8 and you'll runinto a Free Music Workshop consist-ing of The Nederlands SaxofoonKwartet, the Rova SaxophoneQuartet, the 29th Street SaxophoneQuartet, the Berliner SaxophonQuartett, Itchy Fingers, the Koel-

CB S/FOX GOES OVER-BOARD - Goldie Hawnplays an heiress with am-nesia in this CBS/Fox
Home Video release. Directed byGarry Marshall, this one is atelevision-level comedy that oughtto translate well into a home videomovie. Goldie plays a grating, ob-
noxious rich-bitch who falls out ofher yacht and is retrieved by a car-penter that she had fired (Kurt Rus-sell), who takes advantage of heramnesia and convinces her that heis her husband and that she is themother of his four ill-manneredkids. Slowly she gains control of the
situation becoming the kind ofcharacter Goldie Hawn fans areused to — the good-natured anddippy girl with a big heart. There
are some funny scenes in her transi-tion from unconscious wench tocaring mother. Hawn does acredible job of playing with the twopersonalities when she finally real-izes who she really is. Not a greatwork of art, but good, clean familyentertainment. Rated PG, 112minutes, $89.98.

MCA HOME VIDEOPRESENTS CRY FREEDOM -Nominated for three AcademyAwards, Ciy Freedom is directed bySir Richard Attenborough whoused his broad, historical brushstrokes previously in Ghartdi. If youbuy the whole genre of the histori-cal drama, especially Atten-borough's preachy style, than thisfilm is a palatable, informative andsometimes moving depiction of lastyears of South African revolution-ary Stephen Biko. There is a major
flaw in the film, however - Atten-borough opts to split the film intotwo parts. The first half follows thelife of Biko (Denzel Washington),
through the eyes of white SouthAfrican journalist Donald Woods(Kevin Kline). After Biko's deathhalf-way through the film, the storyfollows Wood's attempt to escapethe country with his family and hismanuscript about Biko's Ufe. It's atrue story, but a bad way to make amovie. Part of the "problem" isDenzel Washington, he's so good inhis portrayal of Biko that you don't
care to see anyone or anybody els ^When he dies in the film, neithi r
j
Kevin Kline or the limply evokedattempt at a suspenseful escape foWoods can fill the vacuum. This i ihalf a great movie, but a goO' Lenough half and a good enough* ^cause to warrant getting this film
jDebuts June 16th. $89.95.
