Reflections & Preparation for Worship O God, by Your power may we, together with all the saints, comprehend the breadth and length and

height and depth of the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that we may be filled with Your

fullness. Amen. ~ based on Ephesians 3:18-19

“Interestingly, Christianity claims to be based on history. Unlike the Hindu Upanishads which focus onthe believer’s merger with the life force Brahman, or the Buddhist Tripitaka which emphasizes theextinguishment of self and suffering, or the Islamic Quran that centers on the nature and practice of submission to God, the New Testament revolves around a series of  events said to have occurred in

Palestine between 5BC and AD 30. This makes Christianity particularly open—some would sayvulnerable—to the kinds of questions just listed [e.g., from The DaVinci Code]. The logic is simple: if you claim that something spectacular took place in history, intelligent people are going to ask youhistorical questions. On the whole, Christianity has welcomed this. It is as if the Christian faith placesits head on the chopping block of public scrutiny and invites us all to take a swing.”

~ John Dickson, The Christ Files: How Historians Know What They Know About Jesus

“I am a Jew, but I am enthralled by the luminous figure of the Nazarene….No one can read the Gospelswithout feeling the actual presence of Jesus. His personality pulsates in every word. No myth is filledwith such life.”

~ Albert Einstein

“Trusting testimony is not an irrational act of faith that leaves critical rationality aside; it is, on thecontrary, the rationally appropriate way of responding to authentic testimony. Gospels understood astestimony are the entirely appropriate means of access to the historical Jesus.”

~ Richard Bauckham, University of St. Andrews

“I have been reading poems, romances, vision literature, legends and myths all my life. I know whatthey are like. I know none of them are like this. Of this [gospel] text there are only two possible views.Either it is reportage … or else, some unknown [ancient] writer … without known predecessors or successors, suddenly anticipated the whole technique of modern novelistic realistic narrative”.

God Graciously Renews Us in Christ Have mercy on me, O God, in Your faithful love, in Your great tenderness wipe away my offenses; wash

me thoroughly from my guilt, purify me from my sin. ~ Psalm 51:1-2

Call to Confession

Leader: Like the people who greeted Jesus as He entered Jerusalem and later shouted, “CrucifyHim!”, we are fickle people who often deny Christ in our thoughts, words, and deeds.Remembering the events of the last week of Jesus leading to His crucifixion, let usrightly see ourselves for what we are: people who are sinners in need of a Saviour—aSaviour, praise God, is what we have in the Lord Jesus Christ. In honesty and hope, letus confess our sins to God…

Prayer of Confession

Leader: Lord Jesus, You are the King of glory and are full of grace. You rode a donkey and

came in peace, humbled Yourself and gave Yourself for us and for our salvation. AsYou entered Jerusalem, the crowds shouted, “Hosanna!” On Good Friday, they shouted“Crucify.” Jesus, we shout hosannas to praise You. Yet, Lord, we confess that thesame mouths that seek to praise You often deny or defy You. And we confess that thehands that seek to serve You often become fists. Hear us as we confess our sins beforeYou….

~ Silent confession and reflection.

Lord, help us to lay at Your feet all that we have and all that we are, trusting You toforgive what is sinful, to heal what is broken, to welcome our praises, and to receive usas your own. Amen.

The Words of the Gospel

Leader: Hear the Word of the Lord from Psalm 118:

“Let those who fear the Lord say, ‘His steadfast love endures forever.’Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free. The Lord is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation.I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the Lord.”

In Christ, God answers the prayer of faith and sets us free!In Christ there is found the forgiveness of sins!

Songs of Response“How High And How Wide”

No eye has seenAnd no ear has heard

And no mind has ever conceivedThe glorious things

That You have prepared for ev'ryone

Who has believedYou brought us near

And You called us Your ownAnd made us joint heirs

With Your Son

chorus:How high and how wideHow deep and how long

How sweet and how strongIs Your love

How lavish Your graceHow faithful Your ways

How great is Your love O Lord

Objects of mercyWho should have known wrath

We're filled with unspeakable joyRiches of wisdom unsearchable wealthAnd the wonder of knowing Your voice

You are our treasureAnd our great reward

Our hope and our glorious King

(repeat chorus)

“Thy Mercy, My God”

Thy mercy, my God, is the theme of my songThe joy of my heart, and the boast of my tongueThy free grace alone, from the first to the last

Hath won my affection and bound my soul fast

Without Thy sweet mercy, I could not live hereSin would reduce me to utter despair

But through Thy free goodness, my spirit's revivedAnd He that first made me still keeps me alive

Thy mercy is more than a match for my heartWhich wonders to feel its own hardness departDissolved by Thy goodness, I fall to the groundAnd weep for the praise of the mercy I've found

Great Father of mercies, Thy goodness I ownIn the covenant love of Thy crucified Son

All praise to the Spirit, Whose whisper divine

God Gives Us His Words of Eternal Life  Lord Jesus, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life! Let Your word dwell in us richly,

that whatever we do, in word or deed, we may do everything in Your name, giving thanks to the Father through You. ~ based on John 6:68, Colossians 3:16-17

Today’s Scripture Lesson: John Ferguson, Lead Pastor

“Redemption: Fulfilling All His Promises in Jesus Christ (Part 2)”

Luke 1:1-4

“1:1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been

accomplished among us, 2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the

word have delivered them to us, 3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for

some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 that you may have

certainty concerning the things you have been taught.”

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord.Unison: Thanks be to God!

God Feeds Us His Covenant Meal From the east and the west, from the north and the south, people will come

and take their places at the banquet in the Kingdom of God. ~ based on Luke 13:29

A Word About Participating in The Sacrament of The Lord’s Supper

The Lord’s Supper is a special family meal that Christ gave to His Bride, the Church. For Christians, this meal is a time to receive these signs and seals of the New Covenant which Christhas established with them. Believers come to this Table to meet with their Lord and Saviour byfaith, to be renewed by Him and strengthened in their callings and mission as they eat the breadand drink the wine.

Therefore, all baptized Christians who trust in Christ alone as their Lord and Saviour, who areconnected to a church that proclaims His Gospel, and who are at peace with their fellow believers, are invited to come to the Table.

If you are not yet a Christian, or if for whatever reason you are not prepared to share in this meal,we would encourage you to spend this time in prayer (perhaps using one of the prayers listedbelow). Consider the invitation of Jesus, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall nothunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst…for my Father’s will is that everyone wholooks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day”(John 6:35, 40).

We would ask that children who have not yet professed belief in the Lord Jesus also refrain frompartaking until doing so. The pastor would be delighted to speak to families about what it means toparticipate in the Lord’s Supper.

The Words of Institution

“The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he

broke it, and said, ‘This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ In the

same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood,do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ For as often as you eat this bread and

drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

~ 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

The Sacrament of The Lord’s Supper

Please come forward by rows to the center isle and form a semi-circle in front of the Table toreceive the bread and the wine. When finished, place your cup at the side tables and proceed toyour seat via the outer isles. If you are unable to come forward, we would be delighted to serve youat your seat.

New City Church uses wine in serving the Lord’s Supper . We would encourage you to take of the wine since it is a symbol of joy and celebration in Scripture. However, juice is also provided if you cannot drink wine due to health reasons or issues of conscience.

Prayers for Those Not Communing

A Prayer Searching for the Truth: Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life, and thatno one comes to the Father except by You. If what you claim is true, please guide me and teachme. Open to me the reality of who You are. Grant that I might be undaunted in following You as I

consider the reasons for doing so. Give me an understanding of You that is coherent, convincing, and leads to the eternal life that You promise. Amen.

A Prayer of Trust in the Lord Jesus: Jesus, I confess that I am more broken, flawed, and sinfulthan I had ever before dared to admit. Yet You tell me that I am more loved than I ever dared tohope, and that You accept all who turn to You in simple faith. I am doing that right now. I thankYou for taking the justice that my sins deserved when You died on the Cross. I eagerly trust Youfor the forgiveness for my sins, and I receive from You now the eternal life that You promise to allwho come to You. Amen.

A Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin: Lord Jesus, You know the battle that rages within myheart. Grant that in my battles with sin, I may see in You the fulfillment of all my needs. Give me

strength to turn from every false satisfaction to find my ultimate joy in You. Enable me to lay asidethe sin that clings so closely to me, and fill me with your Spirit to run with perseverance the race youhave set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and champion of my faith. Amen.

A Prayer for Children (who have yet to profess faith): Jesus, the Bible tells me that Youblessed kids like me. Help me to know who You are and to understand what You have done for me. Amen.

Our Confession of Faith Heidelberg Catechism #1

Leader: Christian, what is your only comfort in life and in death?

Unison: That I belong—body and soul, in life and in death—not to myself but to my faithfulSaviour Jesus Christ, who at the cost of his own blood has fully paid for all mysins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil…

…that he protects me so well that without the will of my Father in heaven, not ahair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit his purpose for mysalvation.

Therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes mewholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him!

God Sends Us Out Into The World With His Blessing  “God has shown you what is good. And what does the Lord require of you?
