If you didn’t know this was a retirement community, you’d never believe it. That’s because SearStone is changing the way people think about senior living. You expect the convenience, security and value; what you might not expect is a perfect location with most everything you could want or need within walking distance. You might not realize just how affordable we are compared to everything you’re spending today. And you certainly wouldn’t expect your family to want to spend as much time as they can here. We’re not just changing the way you think about retirement living, we’re changing the way you experience it.

The Art Walk: Saturday, May 16 from 9 am – 2 pm on Lake SearStone.SearStone is only 25 minutes from Duke’s campus!

10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Friday and Saturday)Nasher Museum of Art at DukeColour Correction: British and American Screenprints, 1967-75 Drawn primarily from the Nasher Museum’s vast collection of prints, Colour Correction examines a moment when artists adopted, and adapted, the screenprint technique during an extremely fertile period of experimentation and productivity in the United States and Great Britain. Coinciding with a confluence of social upheaval, political turmoil and artistic change and exchange, Colour Correction illustrates what many art historians consider to be the “golden age” of screenprinting. The exhibition includes more than 100 works by 40 artists─from the playful Pop art of Andy Warhol and Eduardo Paolozzi to the scathing political critiques of May Stevens to the minimalist abstractions and optical exercises in visual perception by artists such as Richard Anuszkiewicz, William T. Williams and Liliane Lijn.

Open This End: Contemporary Art from the Collection of Blake ByrneAn exhibition of both iconic and lesser-known works from some of the most significant and compelling artists of the last 50 years, Open This End: Contemporary Art from the Collection of Blake Byrne will trace a number of intertwined narratives in the history of recent art. These narratives include Pop and Conceptual Art, Minimalism, body-oriented performance art, the Pictures Generation, identity politics and psychologically-inflected figurative works. The exhibition’s title comes from a 1962 painting by Andy Warhol, a gift from Blake Byrne to The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the earliest work in the show. Guest curator Joseph R. Wolin utilizes the strengths of Byrne’s collection to chart a broad but personal overview of contemporary art, while also providing a window into the collector’s personal vision.

Juan was a pioneer in the post-9/11 effort to use all elements of national power, especially economic and financial tools of statecraft, in combatting terrorism, and he went on to be the top coordinator in the Bush White House National Security Council staff with day-to-day responsibility for terrorism issues. Juan’s book, Treasury’s War, is the seminal book outlining the new techniques of financial warfare -- techniques that have migrated from the fight against terrorist networks to be at the center of U.S. strategy in confronting Russian adventurism, Iranian nuclear ambitions, and other geostrategic threats. Anyone who wants to understand the intersection of economics, finance, foreign policy, and national security will benefit from reading this book. And Duke is fortunate that we can both read the book and discuss it with the author.

The shuttles will make several trips between Reunions HQ and East Campus. Breakfast will be served from 8:00am - 9:00am.

For 42 years, the East Campus was synonymous with the Woman’s College (WC), a coordinate college for female students. With its own student government, library, and administrators, the WC offered a residentially separate experience for women students, but they still shared faculty, classrooms, and curricula with their male counterparts. Beginning in 1930, the WC offered women leadership opportunities and a special community, but also social restrictions that, at times, differed markedly from those of the male students, and led to the end of the separation of genders in 1972. University Archivist Valerie Gillispie’s program traces the ups and downs of this unique Duke institution, with plenty of photographs, stories, and anecdotes to bring back memories—or create some new ones! Light continental breakfast will be available outside the East Duke Parlors prior to the program.
