ST. STANISLAUS KOSTKA PARISH'S PILGRIMAGE TO OUR PATRON'S TOMB...I just wanted to give you a brief report on our recent trip to Rome and Assisi and to tell you that we all behaved ourselves...some better than others!...and had a very great time.

After leaving JFK on Thursday, March 31, we arrived in Rome the next morning, about 45 minutes early, which was a good sign for us all...we even were there before our guide. The 22 of us, exhausted from the trip, boarded our bus and got out of Rome before the morning traffic caught up with us. We headed north-east, and after a stop for coffee and the “conveniences”, we arrived in the lower part of Assisi ready to go. We went to the Basilica which played an important part in the life of St. Francis and the beginnings of the Franciscan Order, and after a tour, we had our first Mass together...a very quiet Mass since both the congregation and the celebrant were totally exhausted. We then headed to Assisi itself for a free afternoon at our hotel. The first thing that we all noticed was the heightened security at all the Churches due to Paris and Brussels...a bit sad to see.

The next morning we celebrated Mass at the tomb of St. Francis and toured the Basilica dedicated to his memory. After a walking tour of Assisi, we had lunch, boarded our bus and headed to Rome. Our hotel was less than a block from St Peter's Square...very convenient. The next morning, we attended the Pope's Mass in St. Peter’s Square with about 50,000 of our closest friends and received the blessing of Pope Francis at his Angelus message in the Square. After lunch, we ventured out to visit three of the other Basilicas of Rome. It was good to return to our hotel for dinner at a local restaurant.

Monday, we had Mass at St Peter's and a tour of the Basilica, the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel. After lunch we toured the Scavi Exhibit under St Peter’s where the tomb of Peter was found in the last century. For the record, they went, I took a nap!!! The next day, we had Mass at the Church of St. Peter in Chains and toured Imperial Rome and the Coliseum. Tuesday's highlight for me, at least, was that we had lunch in Rome's Jewish Ghetto, then visited the tomb of St Stanislaus Kostka and were allowed to visit the room where he died. This was made possible by parishioners who had been to Rome before Easter, had “discovered” his tomb by “accident” and told us about it.

On Wednesday, we did a great deal...we began with great seats for the Papal Audience and Blessing, followed by a visit to the Church of St. Paul's Outside-the-Walls and then the Catacombs of St Domitila where we joined Cardinal Dolan and his group for Mass. Dinner was enjoyed at a favorite place of the Cardinal’s where he graciously spent a lot of time with us. Our group left the dinner “early” as we needed to pack for our return to Pleasant Valley the next morning. We arrived back to NY about an hour later than planned because we had to circle JFK...other planes, however were diverted to other airports. We got home about 7PM and most of us “slept in” on Friday. It was a memorable—and tiring-- week and it’s good to be home. Thanks for your prayers for our safety...and for sending us pictures of the snow...it cooled us off from the sunny 70+ degrees we had to endure in Rome. We offered it up....
