Fiji Police Investigating Interim PM Bainimarama Over Alleged Electoral Violations

Fiji's interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama could face up to ten years jail for allegedly breaching the nation's political party’s decree. Fiji police have begun investigations into two complaints made by the opposition United Front for Democratic Fiji.The party alleges Rear Admiral Bainimarama violated the decree by starting his election campaign before his Fiji First Party was registered for the September 17 poll. United Front for Democratic Fiji's coordinator Mick Beddoes told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat there is also a conflict of interest in the use of Fiji's coat of arms by Fiji First."There is ample evidence to show that there is ongoing breach of the decrees, now these are the decrees that they have forced on the previously registered political parties and they have all had

to make a lot of adjustments to comply with this," he said.He said it was also concerning that the name of the interim Prime Minister's party, Fiji First, has been previously registered by two individuals."If he were to have gained permission, then all they need to do is disclose how they came about doing that.""As it stands, they are using a name that has already been previously registered to somebody else." The United Front for Democratic Fiji says it as encouraging that police are investigating the interim prime minister for the alleged breaches. Fiji's interim prime minister could face up to ten years jail if found guilty of breaching the decree.The media has approached both the Fijian Government and Fiji Police for comment, but there has been no response so far.

Australian Couple Wins $30K Wedding

A LUCKY couple from Australia beat 544 other entrants from around the world to win a wedding in Fiji valued at more than$30,000.Tourism Fiji's Facebook competition to win a wedding in Fiji was viewed by more than 30,000 people online.The winning couple, Melanie Gibson and Julian Vera Uribe will now get married as part of Fiji's Tourism Expo on May 8, 2014.Sally Cooper, Tourism Fiji's events director, said she was impressed by both the volume and quality of entries in the competition.

"Literally hundreds of people have made such huge effort with entries," she said."Weddings are one of the fastest growing niche market in tourism for Fiji and this would be highlighted at the Fijian Tourism Expo, with professional wedding planners attending the event and also Fijian wedding service suppliers."The "Pin Your Perfect Wedding" competition on Facebook invited couples to create their perfect tropical wedding from the ideal dress, hair and makeup to wedding rings, decorations and venue.

Call For Stay On FreezeThe decision by the Commerce Commission to lift the freeze on domestic rents would see an explosion of rent increases and cause more hardship for people already struggling with high living costs, says the Fiji Labour Party.Party president Lavinia Padarath said the party also denounced the call by the commission for landlords to register their properties."This is just another instance of over-regulation by the authorities," Ms Padarath said."There is already too much interference, particularly with small business enterprises."Ms Padarath said the requirement for registration of property ownership would be an imposition and was unnecessary."Domestic rent freeze was introduced to stop landlords from taking undue advantage of Fiji's serious housing shortage problem.

"Should domestic rents skyrocket, as is likely to happen if the freeze is lifted, people in the lower income bracket unable to afford higher rents will be forced to move to squatter settlements."Commission chairman Dr Mahendra Reddy said the restriction on property owners to increase rent needed to be removed.Dr Reddy said under a new proposal, all property owners would have to register with the commission, which will introduce price control on rent."We want to get rid of the rent freeze. The property is an investment and we want to see investments becoming successful," he said."But this has to be done the right way. You can't be charging an amount not worthy of the house or the property."This is a very crucial issue. Housing is a very crucial issue."Dr Reddy said the system would allow for owners to increase rent but they would have to justify the increase.

Student Raped While Massaging, Court Told

Complainant said she did not shout because she was afraid of the accused being a teacher

The High Court in Suva heard that a teacher from Kadavu allegedly raped a 13-year-old student in 2012 while the complainant was massaging his back.The complainant took the stand and gave evidence under oath of the alleged incident that transpired.She said on the morning of May 26, 2012, she was at home with her family when the accused came to her home and requested her parents for her and her sister to clean his house.Her mum later on went to Vunisea to do their family shopping.The complainant and her sister took the lead to the home of the accused as he went to buy ‘samosa’.When he returned, he spread a sulu on the floor of the living room, laid over the sulu on his stomach and asked the victim to massage his back.He then told the other sister to go and look for the hymn book in the room.

The complainant told the court that this was when the alleged incident took place. It is alleged he sexually assaulted and raped the complainant.She said she was sitting with her legs crossed on the right side of the accused person wearing a Tee-shirt and skirt at the time of the alleged incident. She said she did not shout because she was afraid of the accused being a teacher.The court heard that the accused gave them food and $2 afterwards when the girls’ father came to see them.The incident was then relayed to the complainant’s mother when she returned from shopping. They then went to a teacher who then called the Police. The complainant also identified the accused in open court. When cross examined, the complainant said the accused allegedly committed the act and that was the truth. The trial continues.

Man Charged With Using False Passport In Queenstown

A Fijian man has been remanded in custody after allegedly attempting to leave New Zealand using a false passport.Queenstown police say the man, 43, tried to board a plane to Australia at Queenstown Airport last Sunday afternoon at 4pm.“Apparently when he fronted at the airport, he was wearing a hat, glasses and a scarf,” senior constable Chris Blackford says.“He’s produced a passport that has allegedly been dishonestly obtained. It’s an Australian passport. “He’s Fijian but the name on the passport is a very Anglo European name.“There was a warrant out for his arrest in relation to a charge of wounding

with intent in Auckland.”The man, who works as a welder according to court documents, was remanded in custody by a registrar at Queenstown District Court Monday. The man is charged with possessing an Australian passport obtained by false representation. He was due to be transferred to Invercargill Prison. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 28. Blackford says the man is allegedly in New Zealand illegally after having already been deported to Fiji once. Court documents show the charge of assault with intent to injure is in relation to an incident in August last year in which a man was punched in the head and ribs.

Members To Name ExecutorFNPF members need to name an executor to receive Special Death Benefit (SDB) funeral assistance by completing and filing a Memorandum of Administration (MOA) form.A statement said FNPF paid out more than $4million under the assistance scheme since it was introduced in 2010.It said the assistance allowed members to allocate a maximum of $2000 from their SDB cover for their own funeral expenses.Fund CEO Aisake Taito said they had assisted 2035 deceased members' relatives who had applied for the $2000 over the past four years."This is an assured $2000 assistance that your family members will receive to help with funeral expenses given associated rites and obligations," Mr Taito said.He said they would only pay the $2000 assistance to those listed by the member

as their executors in their completed MOA forms.He confirmed FNPF would not pay out the $2000 if the completed MOA was not filed.Under the SDB, FNPF said members qualified for a $8500 payout should they die before they fully withdrew from FNPF.If the SDB funeral assistance is paid out to the member's executor, the remaining $6500 would be deposited into the member's account before their total balance is paid out to his/her nominees."The SDB Funeral Assistance is only for the deceased member's funeral expenses and cannot be accessed for any other expenses related to the member."Mr Taito said other changes to members' benefits would be progressively announced in the next few months.

Court Acquits Man, 54, Of 2009 Rape

A high court in Suva has overturned assessors' guilty verdict for a 54-year-old man charged with the rape of a 13-year-old girl under his care in Nakasi in 2009.In making his judgement known, Justice Salesi Temo said the prosecution was not able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Pita Vuniqumu was guilty of the deeds.Court papers say the complainant accused Vuniqumu, who was a doctor by profession and had brought her up as his own, for raping her twice on August and October 2009.The complainant is the daughter of the Vuniqumu family's housegirl and had lived with them for the previous six years and was treated as part of the family.Before she reported the matter, she had been disciplined and beaten by Vuniqumu after her "interest in girls" problem was brought up in school.After a three-day trial the three assessors returned with an unanimous decision finding the accused guilty of the deeds.However, Justice Temo overturned the decision saying the evidence that had been produced in court raised doubts and the possibility that the girl may have made up the allegations because of the beating."In my view, the proximity between the "beating" and the rape allegations were too close, as to raise more questions. It created doubts and suspiciouns in the mind of the court," Justice Temo said."As I've stated before, it was the job

of the prosecution to remove these doubts, but in my respectful view, they failed to do so."Justice Temo also drew attention to the inconsistencies between the complainant's medical report, the police report and her statements before the court.The police wrote, "...The victim allege that she was abuse by the uncle since 2003 until 13.10.09 inside his house at Nakasi..."In the doctor's report, the doctor had noted the complaint as that she had been raped by her uncle for the past five years. However, in court she said she only had two encounters with Vuniqumu in 2009."She never said, she had unlawful sexual encounters with the accused for the last five years," Justice Temo said."The complainant's inconsistent versions to the police, the doctor and the court created doubts in the court's mind."Justice Temo said the inconsistent reports created reasonable doubt."I have heard the complainant's evidence. I have heard the defence's evidence."After careful comparing and analysing all the evidence, I am left with a reasonable doubt as to the accused's guilt."I am not sure whether or not he is guilty as charged. The law required the benefit of the doubt to go to him. I therefore find the accused not guilty as charged on both counts, and acquit him accordingly."

Social Ministry To Increase Welfare Allocation

The Social Welfare Ministry is looking to increase the allocation given to welfare recipients particularly those living alone.Confirming the news, the ministry's Permanent Secretary Dr Josefa Koroivueta said a proposal had been raised that the allocation is increased from $60 to $90."Currently the minimum a person can get under the Poverty Benefit Scheme is $30 cash and $30 food voucher so that is $60 financially a month. The maximum that a family can get is $150."Now, we are relooking at the $60 and considered the hardships and the times we are living in, it's not enough especially for someone living alone and does not have a relative to take care of them. So we have proposed that it be elevated."Dr Koroivueta said they are still to work out the numbers, but are hopeful to implement the change as soon as possible."The need is there. We would like to do it straight away. If we leave it for long, it'd become worse and have a

damaging impact," Dr Koroivueta said.To speed up the process of identifying these recipients, the ministry is looking at the existing system of publication and is also going to carry out a very robust exercise with the support of the village headmen and the Health Ministry to spread the word.Those recipients living alone will then register with the ministry to acquire their increased allocation.The Social Welfare Ministry also says it has enough funds under its existing 2014 allocation to cater for the increase.The other welfare schemes administered by the ministry include the Care & Protection Allowance which is given to single mothers, deserted spouses, widows, prisoners dependents and foster parents/guardians.The Social Pension Scheme is a new assistance implemented this year to cater for senior citizens who are 70 years and above who have no source of income and are not recipients of any other existing scheme including the Ex Servicemen or After Care Fund, and govt pension.

CWMH Maternity Investigation Underway

Prime Minister Rear Admiral (Retired) Voreqe Bainimarama visited the Ali family of Nasinu and has given them hope at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH).His visit follows complaints received against two midwives at the CWM Hospital.Imraan Ali, of Nasinu, claimed his wife, Farina Nisha was allegedly forced to walk from the observation room in the maternity ward to the delivery room. This resulted in her newborn baby falling to the floor and suffering injuries on March 13 Mr Ali said.

He claimed his wife had told the midwives that she was not able to walk because she felt the baby coming out. “She was in a lot of pain and did what the midwives asked her but as soon as she took a few steps, the baby came out and fell on the floor.” Mr Ali claimed the midwives took the baby and did not even bother about his wife.“I’m really hurt by the carelessness of the midwives. Anything could have happened to her. ” The Ministry of Health and CWMH head of the maternity unit, Dr James Fong have confirmed that the matter was being investigated.

Domestic Violence Tops ListFOUR out of the eight assault cases received at the Nabouwalu Police Station this year were domestic violence cases.This was revealed by Inspector Eroni Soqosoqo at the Lekutu district meeting on Tavea Island last week.Insp Soqosoqo told the district reps that even though the numbers of offences were not critical, it was still a concern since 50 per cent of the cases involved the beating of housewives by their husbands."Please, remind villagers under your leadership that the Fiji Police Force has

taken a no-drop policy for domestic violence cases," he said."This means all cases of that nature will be treated seriously and only the courts may have the final say in such matters."Gone are the days when couples could reconcile before the cases proceeded to court, enabling such matters to be settled out of court."Mr Soqosoqo said most cases of domestic violence they received were those stemming out of heated arguments between couples.

First Quadruplets For CWMMaternity staff at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva is celebrating the birth of what they believe to be the first quadruplets born in FijiThe four boys were delivered on Friday by Caesarian by a team under the supervision of Dr James Fong, head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.They were in the incubator and joined their mother for the first time for a photo shoot.Dr Fong said: “We believe it’s the first time to have quadruplets. It’s a first in Fiji according to our records here. We have spoken to those who have been here for a long time. We have had triplets before but not quadruplets,” he said.“We still have to verify it. He said he was emailing his counterparts in Lautoka and Labasa to check their records.”But he said it seemed unlikely that they had quadruplets born there. It would

only happen in an emergency situation.The quadruplets’ mother, Meli Waqavulagi, relieved and happy, said: “I cannot wait to see my babies’ smiling faces and hold their little hands, hug and kiss them.”The 35-year-old of Suvavou Village, Lami, said she had given birth to triplets and got a shock when the doctors noticed the fourth baby.She said two of them weighed 1.75kg and the other two were 1.8kg and 2kg.Mrs Waqavulagi said she was overjoyed and she could not wait to see her “four little men.”“We tried for just one and I was stunned when I learned that I was expecting triplets and was actually blessed with four.”Mrs Waqavulagi said she could not have been more surprised when the doctors told her she had four babies. Now she has eight children.“I have four children at home, one girl aged 10 and three boys aged, three, four and one year-seven months.’’

Police Charge Man, 23, Over False InformationSavusavu police have charged a man who allegedly bumped a schoolteacher but lied to police that the damage to his taxi was a result of an assault by an unknown male.Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the 23-year-old man reported that an unknown male had assaulted him and later damaged the windscreen of his

taxi.However, authorities found out later that the accused was involved in an accident whereby he had allegedly bumped a 27- year-old school teacher resulting in damages to his windscreen.He has been charged with one count of giving false information and has been

bailed to appear on May 15, 2014.Meanwhile, the file has been forwarded to the Fiji Police Force Traffic Department to investigate the accident case.“The issue of giving false information to police officers is a serious concern and members of the public must know that there are consequences before the

law,” Naisoro said.“Currently an investigation into similar cases of giving false information is being conducted in the western division whereby a man said he was allegedly assaulted by police officers which was later proved false.“He will be brought in for questioning soon.”

Fiji's National Airline Shares $1.25m With StaffThis profit share payout is testament to the team’s commitment, culminating in a solid financial result 2013 for the

Airline Group.The Fiji Airways, Fiji’s National Airline, announced that the airline’s staff and management will earn over F$1.25m in profit-share and bonuses.This was a result of the company’s financial performance in 2013 (nine-month period ended December 31st).It was the first profit share payout for the National Airline since the plan was approved in principle by the Board in the last year.Stefan Pichler, managing director/chief executive said: “It was one of my key short term objectives to get this great initiative activated for the last financial year.“We want to become the employer of choice, and an organisation which rewards its people for good performances. We all have to share good and bad times together. And when we deliver on our key business objectives, everyone should benefit.”“This profit share payout is testament

to the team’s commitment, culminating in a solid financial result 2013 for the Airline Group.”A total number of 810 non-management employees will each receive F$1,400 each.This number includes employees of Fiji Airways’ wholly owned subsidiary Pacific Sun (soon to be Fiji LINK).The total profit-share payout amount for staff is F$1.04m. Fiji Airways’ and Pacific Sun’s 67 management staff will receive a management bonus of F$4,000 each, subject to taxes and superannuation deductions as required.Those management bonuses will total $0.258 m.In addition, non-management staff for both airlines already stand to earn quarterly KPI-related bonuses of up to $1,200 per year, on achievement of key business objectives.In 2013 alone, Fiji Airways paid non-

Display VAT Inclusive PricesFiji's Consumer Council reminds traders and service providers that VAT inclusive prices (VIP) be displayed for all goods and service supplied at the retail level.This comes as the Consumer Council continues to find some businesses, particularly real estate agents displaying VAT exclusive prices (VEP) in real estate advertisements.Section 82 of the VAT Decree 1991 requires that the price of all goods and services supplied at the retail level in Fiji shall be displayed as inclusive of tax chargeable on that item.The law also makes it unlawful for any business, service provider, or professional service provider to display the VAT component of the price of goods and services supplied at retail level as a separate item.VAT exclusive prices gives consumers a false indication of the likely cost of goods and services and consumers tend

to make their decision without knowing the true cost. However, consumers are in for shock when VAT is added which increases the price of goods and services which in some cases were beyond the consumer’s ability to pay.The display of VAT inclusive prices (VIP) ensures that consumers are given the full and accurate price of a product. Consumers need to know what price they will be paying to make a sound financial decision.In the real estate sector, it is crucial that accurate prices are displayed as property prices are often in the thousands. The VAT component of property prices run in the thousands of dollars. If not included in the pricing, it can result in financial problems for consumers who make a commitment

based on the inaccurate price provided by the agents. Most consumers have to acquire loans to purchase property and need to provide the most accurate figures to their creditors.The Council is calling on real estate agents to comply with the VIP requirement when advertising properties for sale or rent in newspapers, flyers and on websites.Meanwhile, VIPs should also be provided when quotations are provided to consumers. In the past, the Council had received complaints from consumers against some lawyers, builders, and furniture makers who quoted a price for their service by excluding VAT which was not known to the consumers until payments were to be made.


Students Display ProductsStudents of the College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies (CBHTS) put on an exciting vibrant display show of products as part of their course work last week.The Bachelor of Marketing students display is part of unit MKT501 Introduction to Marketing where students were to formulate a product and use marketing strategies learned to sell it.Mr Joseph Rodan Jnr of SCA Hygiene was Chief Guest at the event and said marketing is becoming a battle based more on information that on sales power.“A lot of people may ask why you have chosen to pursue marketing as a discipline area of study-marketing is simply the ability to create demand for your services or products,” he said.According to Mr Rodan marketing is a daily routine practiced by an individual.“Explaining and justifying what you do on a daily basis is part of marketing. You are trying to create the demand for people to listen to your point in view. When you execute your justification process and get others on board with your point of view, that is a phase of marketing, the outcome is the sales side of the execution side.”The former national athlete also shared a few fundamental ideas with students on the best practices which led to success in marketing.“You need good public relations, customer service, understand marketing and people (HR component) in the behavior individually and as a group (Sociology and Psychology applications),” said Mr Rodan.Head of Department for Management,

Mr Imo Sagoa said the enthusiasm from the students was pleasing to note during the display.“One of the objectives of the display was to give the students an opportunity to showcase what they have learnt in a class room situation and make it a reality,” said Mr Sagoa.“Students turnout was encouraging and they were keen to display their products. I am also mindful of limitation and constraints faced by students in the initial planning stage and lead up to the final presentation.“One of the moderators did mention before prize giving that they had a difficult task in choosing the best three winners,” he said.Mr Sagoa thanked the media and the University PR team for the hype it created for the display that saw students flocking in to witness the event.“We will continue with the display since it an integral part of learning. This is perhaps an effective way of learning for students. Further, having judges around them to critically analyze their display and what needs to improve in terms of the product itself (value adding) and how best to enhance the standard of their display will add a further dimension in their personal and professional development.”

Govt Paid $100M Plus For Loans: Finance

The Fijian Government has paid more than $100million to service loans, both external and domestic, in the first quarter this year.This was revealed by Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary Filimoni Waqabaca.Of this, $66.4m was for domestic and $36.3m for external loans that was due for servicing in the first quarter and constitutes to around 37 per cent of the total due cumulative to June.He said bonds floated in the market have raised $101.2m which was 40 percent of the total that needs to be raised in 2014.Waqabaca is also confident Fiji is in strong position to financially meet its own targets and fund its projects and programmes for 2014.This follows recent announcements by two statutory bodies surpassing its

revenue targets for government adding that it is indicative of the state of the Fijian economy.The Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) transferred $39.9m to government comprising of $31.9m as its profit and $8m representing the re-evaluation reserves account as per RBF Act and Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority (FRCA) surpassed its first quarter target by $39m and collected a total of $431.13m in income tax, Value Added Tax, custom duties and other taxes.“It is also a reflection of the optimism that is building up and there are strong signals that the steady economic growth will continue in the short to medium term,” Waqabaca said.This has also been recognised by multilateral institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Asian Development Bank.

Fish Pond Claims ToddlerA family of Naila in Tailevu is mourning the death of their youngest family member.This was after one-year four-month-old Maopa Talemaibau Laqere drowned in a fish pond, just metres from their house on Monday afternoon.Her father, Jone Laqere, 32, said her daughter was at home with her older siblings when the incident happened.The victim was the youngest of six children of five girls and a boy.Mr Laqere said his family was still trying to come to terms with the loss of his youngest daughter.“My other five children were with her at home and I think they must have been attending to something and had forgotten about their sister,” he said.“They are still shocked and still cannot believe that Maopa is gone.”“None of them could sleep because of what happened.Their neighbor, Mareta Vosarogo, 50, was on her way to another house when

she saw the toddler floating in the fish pond.“I then ran back home to call my husband and he came and dived into the pond to get the baby but it was just too late, we tried to revive her but all our efforts didn’t work.”She said the baby’s father was then informed as he was training at a ground nearby.Mr Laqere said when he came he knew something had happened because his children ran crying to him.“When I came, my children were all crying and were asking me if I can forgive them for what has happened,” Mr Laqere said.He said he missed her daughter so dearly.Meanwhile, Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro is urging all parents to ensure their children are supervised at all times.The drowning death toll now stands at 20 compared to 19 for the same period last year.

Man Denies Killing Wife In Sydney

A man accused of stabbing his partner to death in Sydney has pleaded not guilty to murder. Ratu Joji Serutawake pleaded not guilty at the NSW Supreme Court to the murder of Adi Cavora Baleimalea Bole Tavuki, 22, at North Narrabeen on October 21, 2012. Police have previously alleged

that Serutawake, then 29, stabbed his partner while their 13-month-old baby slept in another room. Serutawake's defence team said they plan to show he acted in self defence or in self defence of another. His trial will commence on October 20 and is expected to last two weeks.

TP Sreenivasan Back After 25 Years

NZ Offers 10 Postgrad Scholarships

The New Zealand Pacific Scholarships is offering 10 scholarships for Fiji citizens to apply for study in 2015 at postgraduate level.Through its New Zealand Aid Programme, scholarships are being offered for postgraduate certificate, diploma masters, and doctorate level at selected NZ universities and technical institutions.NZ's acting Head of Mission, Mark Ramsden, says the scholarships will contribute to Fiji's growing population of well-educated and highly-skilled people and help to develop the leadership potential of a new generation."These scholarships provide opportunities for people to obtain qualifications in specific subject areas that are relevant to Fiji's development

13 Years For RapeA 20-year-old gets an 11-year non-parole prison term for raping minor

A man was sentenced to 13 years in prison by the High Court in Suva for the charge of rape.The 20-year-old raped the nine-year-old victim between January 23 and April 27, 2012 at Nausori.The court heard that the accused is now 21 years old and has a clear record and is a seminarian at a Bible school in Tailevu. He is the eldest in his family and is remorseful for his actions.When sentencing the accused Justice Paul Madigan took into consideration the young age of the victim and the inevitable psychological effect the crime will have on her.

He said that the lawyer for the accused had submitted that no minimum term be imposed given his clients youth and clear record; however the court must have regard to the nature of the offence.He added the rape of a child was seen by the courts as a heinous crime.Justice Madigan then said that he cannot accede to the submission by the defence lawyer.As a precaution he also issued a domestic violence restraining order against the accused and the order is to remain in place until further ordered by the court. The accused will serve a 11-year non-parole period out of the 13-year sentence.

Fiji's Office of the Director Public Prosecutions (ODPP) says the file of Sereima Berwick, whose body was found hanging from a tree beside her home at Nabouciwa village in 2007, will be reviewed in the normal course.And a final decision on what charges, if any, will be made by the DPP.The DPP's says its "policy is that all police files submitted to the ODPP for advice need to be reviewed for sufficiency of evidence and recommendations on

charges must be submitted to the DPP for final decision within 21 days."Assistant Commissioner Police (ACP) Rusiate Tudravu said all their findings, as set out by a magistrates court ruling late last year, have also been submitted to the DPP's office.Nausori Magistrate Charles Ratakele had ruled during an inquest on the case in December last year that the 13-year-old's death in 2007 was as a result of murder and not suicide.

and responsibilities so that we aspire to meet the standard that is expected of the industry especially for the Australian market. Faith Trip Turns Into Four-Year Nightmare

A Suva woman who went on a religious pilgrim to India has been stranded there for four years.Savita Devi, 41, of Samabula had her visa expired in 2010 and Indian authorities in Bangalore are not allowing her to return home until she gets a re-entry visa.In an interview from her flat in Puttaparti, an emotional Ms Devi said she had no money to survive."I came here on a pilgrim. It was my wish. When my visa was about to expire I gave it to a travel agent who failed to renew my visa on time," she said."I thought my visa was renewed, so I asked my brother to send me $A1000 ($F1600) to purchase my air ticket and return home."Ms Devi said she purchased the air ticket and went to Bangalore Airport where she was not allowed to board the plane."They told me that my foreign registration was not complete and my visa had expired."I was told that I cannot travel until I get a re-entry visa," she said.

Ms Devi said the Indian Immigration was not giving her the right reasons on why she could not to return to Fiji.She said she was surviving on money being sent to her from her families in Fiji and at times had no food to eat.Ms Devi said she also visited the Fiji High Commission in New Delhi for help."They wrote a letter to the Indian authorities in Bangalore asking them to grant me permission to leave. Nothing has been done."She said she would travel to New Delhi again to seek the high commission's help.Her sister, Shanti Pillay, of New Zealand, said their elderly mother was worried about her sister."I visited her last year and together we went to Delhi and met the first secretary of the Fiji High Commission to India. He had written a letter for us to take to the Immigration Department," she said."I really don't know what they (Indian Immigration) want from us, because if they are keeping her as an illegal immigrant then they should deport her." Fiji Airways Assures Staff Will Benefit From Future Success $14.5 Million Profit After Tax Reported For Transition Years’ Nine-Month Period

Our national airline has assured it will ensure its staff, shareholders and customers all benefit from their future success.This came from Fiji Airways managing director/chief executive, Stefan Pichler, as the Air Pacific Group announced its financial results for nine months period ended December 31, 2013.Air Pacific Group reported an after tax profit of $14.5 million for the nine-months period compared to $17.8 million from the preceding 12-months.The nine months performance was attributed to have been driven by an increase in passenger numbers by 2.5 per cent with additional revenue of one per cent.Hence, Fiji Airways said there was a

slight yield decrease of -1.5 per cent because of the relentless competitive environment, especially from/to the US and Australia.The group further recorded $541.2 million revenue compared to $690.6m for prior nine-months period.The Group changed its financial year to reflect the calendar year following a Board decision. The prior financial year was from April 2, 2012 and March 31, 2013.Air Pacific Group comprises Fiji Airways, subsidiary Pacific Sun, and 38.75 per cent stake in the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa.Though the group no longer gives seperate results, Mr Pichler confirmed both airlines were profitable.

Transition yearGroup chairman, Nalin Patel, said 2013 was a major transition year for Fiji years with rebranding, introduction of Airbus A330 and retiring Boeing 747 aircraft.“This transition alone accounted for more than $14 million one-time transition expenses in the financial year 2013,” he said.“We also brought in Mr Stefan Pichler to lead Fiji Airways to new levels.“For the Board, this means confidence in the further growth path for the airline’s fleet, network, people, services, sustainable profitability and increased returns to the shareholders in the years ahead.”

Plans aheadMr Pichler said their recently-approved five-year Master Plan sets the foundation for sustainable and profitable growth between now and the end of 2017.“It’s an incredibly exciting time for us as we get ready to bring new aircraft in, growing our fleet by 25 per cent,” he said.“We have announced new routes and have strengthened in particular our South Pacific network.“We’re pursuing new airline partnerships and working together more closely with our current allies and we will also work closer with our business partners in the travel trade and in cargo.

Farmers Prepare For Fresh Ginger Exports To Australia

The first consignment of fresh ginger into the Australian market from Fiji is expected to be in August.This is after the Australian Government granted access of ginger exports from Fiji in February.The first three consignments are expected to be of high quality and which meets Australian standards.In a bid to prepare ginger farmers for this export, a Ginger Refresher Course was held at the Southern Cross Hotel in Suva.

The one day workshop was funded by the Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access ProgramPermanent Secretary for Agriculture, Ropate Ligairi said: “With the opening of marketing opportunities, this will surely broaden our economic base and provide employment to more of our ordinary people.“We are trying to ship the first fresh ginger consignment to Australia but first we must look at our own standards.”

2497 More Fijians Registered For Election

In February, 2,497 Fijians registered to vote as the Fijian Elections Office continued in its efforts to give every Fijian the opportunity to register to vote in Fiji’s first election since 2006.This is a significant increase compared to 1769 Fijians who were registered in January.

The number brings to 547,554 the total number of Fijians registered to vote in the September 17 election.Also last month, the Fijian Elections Office replaced 1148 lost voter cards and changed 418 voter details.In the 2006 election, the total number of Fijians registered to vote was 479,674.

Sikhs Gather To Celebrate Annual Festival

ABOUT 200 Sikhs from Lautoka gathered to celebrate the annual Vaisakhi at the Gurudwara (Sikh temple) at Vitogo Parade on Monday.The Vaisakhi festival observed by Sikhs all over the world on April 14, celebrates the founding of the Sikh community known as the Khalsa in 1699 in the city of Anandpur Sahib in India.

Farmers dominated the celebrations at Lautoka temple.Temple secretary Prem Singh said the farmers had celebrated after harvesting their crops, which they presented at the event and also by singing and dancing.He said the Vaishaki was also observed in Tavua, Labasa and Samabula in Suva on Monday.Sports activities were also organised.

Diesel, LPG, Auto Gas And Kerosene Down

Petrol and premix up in second quarter fuel price reviewThe latest quarterly review of fuel prices will see the cost of diesel, LPG-Auto Gas and kerosene reduced, while motor spirit and pre-mix goes up.Diesel comes down by four cents a litre from the current $2.39 to $2.35 while kerosene also comes down 4 cents a litre from $2.22 to $2.18.A litre of LPG-Auto Gas will fall by more than 3 per cent from $2.36 to $2.29 and there is no reduction in the price of cylinder gas, which remains the same as last quarter.At the same time, there’s a rise in unleaded motor spirit (petrol), which goes up by 4 cents a litre from $2.59 to $2.63 and for premix fuel, which also rises by 4 cents a litre from $2.51 to $2.55.In announcing the latest review by the Commerce Commission, the Attorney

General and Minister for Industry, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, said they were based on global fluctuations over which Fiji, as a price taker, had no control.“Many people will welcome the fall in the price of diesel and Auto Gas, especially in the transport sector, and ordinary Fijian householders everywhere will also be pleased to be paying less for kerosene. Unfortunately the news this quarter is not so good for motorists and those using premix fuel”, he said.“ Our vulnerability to price fluctuations determined by the global market must make us all even more determined to conserve energy, use it wisely and look for alternative energy sources. The Government is also currently looking at different models to further reduce our vulnerability to price fluctuations”, the A-G said.

23,000 Passport Books Now In Stock

23,000 passport books are now in stock to be used for applications received by the Department of Immigration. Fiji Director of Immigration Nemani Vuniwaqa said this supply is enough to take the Country till the 3rd quarter of this year. He said currently another 35,000 books are inbound from the suppliers and this will take the Country till the end of the year.

Vuniwaqa said another reason there is an adequate supply is because the current suppliers are producing books within a 3 month time-frame instead of 6 as was in the past. He added though these books are made in a short amount of time the quality however of the passport books are not compromised. A total of 35,000 passport books were issued last year.

Korea Donates 4 New Govt Vehicles Four new government vehicles have been donated by the Korean government. Receiving the donation on behalf of the government at the handing over ceremony, Foreign Affairs Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola said that the donation is the demonstration of the deepening relations between Fiji and

the Republic Korea. Kubuabola added that Fiji continues to value the relationship with Republic of Korea and hopes that exchanges like this will only for the strengthened relations. The four vehicles are earmarked to support protocol services for visiting dignitaries whilst in the country on meetings and conferences.

Fiji Airways To Purchase New Aircrafts

Fiji Airways intends to spend part of its after tax profit of $14.5 million over the last 9 months on the purchase of a new ATR72 aircraft.Managing Director and CEO of Fiji Airways Stefan Pichler said the new aircraft is also part of the airline expanding its fleet from this year.Pichler said as the company undertakes growth; there are plans to purchase more planes.As we have more funding we get more aircraft. We just now purchased a new ATR-72, later on we fund another ATR72-600

New Police Commissioner Former South African police commissioner, George Fivaz is tipped to take up

the post of police commissioner for the Fiji Police Force.

Fivaz had returned home to discuss the appointment with his family mid last month.Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama had at that time confirmed on a talkback show on Radio Fiji One that a South African national is tipped to become the new police commissioner.Fivaz was appointed South African Police Commissioner by the late

former president Nelson Mandela in 1995.He held that position until 2000.An announcement on the new appointment is expected from the Fijian government soon.ACP Ravi Narayan has been acting police commissioner since September last year when the term of Brigadier General, Ioane Naivalurua ended.

Appeal By Woman On Life Sentence Dismissed

A Court of Appeal has dismissed an application by a woman on life sentence after she killed her German husband and kept his partly decomposed body at their residence in Korotogo, Sigatoka in 2009.Corum of Court of Appeal Judges led by Justice Sathyaa Hettigem, Justice Suresh Chandra and Justice William Calanchini affirmed the trial court decision of life sentence and a non-parole period of 12 years against Nioni Tagici.On February 9, 2009 at Korotogo, Tagici, then 31, during an argument over money with her husband, Jurgen Alfred Mierke, 63, threw a candleholder at him. The candleholder struck his head causing injuries.She then locked his body in their main house at Korotogo. When questioned

of her husband's whereabouts, she said he had gone to Germany to visit relatives.The body was later discovered by her brothers who had visited her in Sigatoka after they began to experience a foul smell emanating from the couple’s home.Upon discovery of her husband’s body, she ran inside the house and stabbed herself several times on the chest.She was convicted and sentenced on March 11, 2010.In one of her grounds of appeal filed with the courts, Tagici said she was remorseful and would be a good and responsible mother to her children.She had two children from a previous marriage. She had been living with the deceased in a de-facto relationship since 2004. They got married in 2007.

Teen's Body Found In SigatokaPolice are appealing for information that could help with an investigation into the discovery of a 19 year olds body along Queens Highway.The discovery was made at around 11.40pm at Valase, Sigatoka whereby the victim was found lying in a pool of blood approximately 1km from Tagaqe village.The 19 year old victim was last known to be drinking with two others before

leaving for the village alone. Man Forges University Certificate For NZ Job

A 29-year-old businessman of Nadi accused of forging a university certificate for a technician who had applied for a job in New Zealand is out on bail.Ritnesh Mishra appeared before a court in Nasinu where he was bailed for a sum of $500.He is alleged to have provided to a technician in Waqadra, Nadi a Trade Test Certificate Class III which was later found to be a forged document.The matter was later reported to the Valelevu Police Station after a complaint was lodged by the National Training Productivity Centre (NTPC).The director of NTPC came to know

about the incident upon receiving an email from the New Zealand Qualification Authority wanting to verify the certificate.Upon checking, it was discovered the said certificate number was false and the technician had never sat for the exam at the university.The accused was released on bail with two sureties and ordered to report to the Nadi Police Station every Saturday between 8am-5pm, and not to interfere with witnesses and not to re-offend.Meanwhile investigations continue into the alleged involvement of other parties in relation to this case.

When Media Becomes A Threat To Democracy: Controls Essential To Stop Loose Media Cannons In FijiThakur Ranjit Singh

What we learn from History is that we do not learn from History. Action taken by Fiji Media Industry Development Authority (MIDA) on Ratu Timoci Vesikula’s reported “hate-speech” and punishment meted by MIDA need to be viewed from a Historical rationale and perspective. We need to appreciate how a Western type free and partisan media in the past contributed to fall of democracy and Fiji’s political instability.Any democracy that does not grant equality, fairness and social justice to all its citizens is not worth defending – that is what I proclaimed in a seminar held in Auckland in the aftermath of Bainimarama takeover of Qarase government in December, 2006. I have held that view since, and feel honoured to be branded supporter of Bainimarama.The latest one to do that is Wadan Narsey, who named me as a cheerleader of Bainimarama. Response to that later, but he has been critical of the decision of Fiji Media Industry Development Authority (MIDA), and its Chairperson, Ashwin Raj. MIDA has slated and punished FIJI TV for breaching strict laws that have been put in place subsequent to past upheavals where media have been seen indulging in mischief-making. I know this - as a former publisher of Daily Post, I was removed by Qarase for being too nosey. I have conducted a research on Fiji media. Perhaps Wadan needs to have a read of that thesis and appreciate how a partisan media can be a threat to democracy. [Electronic version available at: http://aut.researchgateway.ac.nz/handle/10292/2554]Perhaps this illustration will help bring to reality those who think the Western concept of media freedom is some religious mantra essential for Fiji:“Nationalists plan protest marchNATIONALISTS around the country are ready to support their leaders and plans to overthrow the government.The statement promised a blood pledge in honour of Fijian ancestors to:Overthrow the Chaudhry GovernmentEstablish a 100 per cent vanua based Fijian parliament and ban any non-indigenous person from parliament.Declare Fiji a Christian stateEstablish a programme of Fijianisation in education, business and the economy.Mr Butadroka fuelled the crowd’s enthusiasm with remarks aimed at the Indian race.” (My emphasis)This journalistic miracle appeared in The Fiji Times on 22 May, 1999 - three days after Chaudhry’s Peoples Coalition Government was sworn in. It was reported by an I-Taukei journalist, Dionesia Tabureguci, and must have passed along the great legends at the Fiji Times that time, Editor, Samisoni Kakaivalu, Editor- in-Chief Russell Hunter; and Netani Rika and Margaret Wise may also have been around in

the newsroom. My research and thesis which was a partial fulfilment of the requirements for degree of Masters in Communications Studies (MCS) at Auckland University of Technology’s (AUT’s) Journalism School showed some starling results. Media, as the fourth estate, is supposed to be the last bastion of democracy. However, in case of Fiji, ironically, the most influential press, Rupert Murdock’s The Fiji Times, appear to have contributed to the fall of democracy, and we are paying the price for it now. One year rule of People’s Coalition Government was led by an Indo-Fijian Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry between May 19, 1999 and May 19, 2000 when Speight’s putsch – attempt to overthrow a democratically-elected government took place. During that period, sensational headlines in The Fiji Times, penned by I-Taukei journalist screamed aloud: Rabuka warns on race bomb, Chiefs warn on Bills, Threats on MPs, State under fire, NLTB boss warns Chaudhry, Church leader warns Chaudhry, Chief’s paper wants to oust Chaudhry, Landowners take over school, PM under fire, PM should quit, says Rewa MP, Taukei workers threaten action, Holy land, Stand up, Qarikau urges Ra, Landowners shut offices, Taukei vow to remove PM, Chief warns of war, Eviction time, Racist group in land talks, Tora warns Chaudhry, Bau chiefs warn Chaudhry, Closure threat on airport, Adi Senimili warns Chaudhry.......and so on shocking display of sensational and divisive reporting.It appears that in one year, every form of a Fijian leader warned and threatened Fiji’s Prime Minister, just because he happened to be an “Indian”. The Fiji Times and freedom of press gave ample opportunity for hatred and sensation to be amplified throughout the nation by the largest and most influential newspaper.During that time, new groups of militant and nationalist make-shift organisations sprang up overnight to oppose government’s initiative. Their little known leaders with suspect following were given undeserved exposure by the press under the guise of media freedom despite such utterances bordering on sedition and hate-speeches. These were also in clear breach of Media Code of Conduct, and out of reach of self-regulatory and hardly effective toothless tiger, Fiji Media Council.Media in general and The Fiji Times in particular provided ample opportunity for anybody who wished to take a pot-shot at the highest seat of the country- the President and the Prime Minister. A responsible media, especially in a developing country, divided on racial lines would be expected to exercise caution in allowing such dereliction of ethics and duties to allow such

show of disrespect to the leaders of a developing nation under the guise of media freedom.In a multiracial developing country where the makeup of the newsroom does not reflect the population of the country, we can have very partisan reporting. The Fiji Times, with a majority I-Taukei gatekeepers and news reporters fell in that category. I suppose FIJI TV also falls in that category now. In my research, it showed that those writing sensational and “negative” articles on Indo-Fijians and Chaudhry government were I-Taukei, who comprised over seventy-five percent or three quarters of those penning those news items that showed by lines. Media researchers have established that journalists’ race and own political views crept into newsrooms. Politics in Fiji is so often mixed with issues like culture loyalties that it could become difficult for reporters to maintain impartiality and direction, especially if they come from same racial and cultural groups as those reported on. In a country like Fiji battling with racial issues, environmental factors encourage an atmosphere of ethnocentrism and racial feelings within journalism.While research already shows dereliction of duties of print media, no research appears to have been done for TV in general and FIJI TV in particular. However its ownership and gatekeeper profile, points to something to be worried about. Therefore, it was timely for MIDA to pull it up, bring into notice, nip in the bud and even punish it for the irresponsible and sensational reporting camouflaged as news item. It is nonsensical to say that items said

in vernacular and directly translated did not carry hate-speech. More than the spoken words, the tone, the body language, hidden idioms and mannerism of mother tongue may speak a lot more than the English translated version. If MIDA or a similar regulatory body with initiative, teeth, interest in national welfare and national development existed in 1999/2000 when media became a threat to democracy in Fiji, perhaps Fiji may have seen a more stable politics. That is why media schools in Fiji have to appreciate understand and value the concept of Development Journalism, more popular and socially and economically beneficial in multi-racial Developing nations. (That, maybe later, or perhaps Media Maestro Mark Edge can add his Canadian bit) Fiji is not ready for the Western type of cut-and–paste democracy. Neither is it ready for the Western concept of First World unfettered and uncontrolled media freedom. Western Democracy and Western Media Freedom concepts have failed Fiji in the past. Australia's Sydney Gets Second Airport

Australia has approved the construction of a second international airport in Sydney at the cost of $2.4bn.The new facility will be located at Badgerys Creek, in western Sydney. Planning and design work would start immediately, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said, with construction expected to begin in 2016. Funding would come mostly from the private sector. The green light from Mr Abbott's government comes nearly 70 years after the idea was first debated. The debate on the need for a second airport in Australia's largest city dates back to 1946. Badgerys Creek was a proposed site but the idea was then shelved for fear of backlash from local voters.'Nationwide benefit' Around 20 sites were considered before the government approved the new facility about 45km west of Sydney's central business district.

Based on early estimates, the first flights in and out of the airport are not expected until the mid-2020s. Speaking outside parliament in Canberra, the prime minister said Sydney's second airport would create up to 60,000 jobs when it became fully operational. Mr Abbott has made it clear he wants a curfew-free airport. Sydney's current Kingsford Smith Airport is only 8km away from the city and it operates with a curfew between 23:00 and 06:00.Australia's national carrier, Qantas, welcomed the announcement. Chief Executive Alan Joyce said in a statement: "Sydney is the key gateway for air traffic in and out of Australia and the benefits of having two major airports will be felt nationwide.""We look forward to being part of this process as Badgerys Creek moves closer to reality."

A Cathay Pacific Flight Was Stranded On The Tarmac For 16

Hours In China A CATHAY Pacific flight from New York to Hong Kong was stranded for more than 16 hours in a Chinese city with all 256 passengers kept on board for the entire time late last month because of immigration regulations, bad weather

and limits on the crew's work hours. Flight 831 was diverted to the southern city of Zhuhai on the night of March 30 because of a hailstorm.The plane was left sitting on the tarmac for hours until Cathay Pacific sent in a new flight crew, with the first crew having reached work-hour limits.All passengers remained on board as required by Chinese immigration and customs regulations at Zhuhai, Cathay Pacific said in an emailed statement.According to the local Chinese customs district, Chinese officials worked continuously to accommodate the new 16 crew members, who took a high-speed ferry from Hong Kong and entered China through a Zhuhai port before arriving at the airport.Chinese customs officials set up a temporary workplace at the airport — which does not have a permanent

customs office — to process the crew members' paperwork before they flew the plane out of Zhuhai in the early afternoon of March 31, the customs district said.Cathay Pacific said the plane took off at 1:08pm, more than 16 hours after it landed in Zhuhai. The flight arrived in Hong Kong a little over an hour later.The flight usually takes 15-16 hours, but this flight turned out to be more than 34 hours long with the stopover.U.S. broadcaster NBC quoted an unnamed passenger who complained that the passengers could not leave the plane while in Zhuhai.A Chinese government statement did not mention that the passengers were kept on the plane, but said local officials provided them with drinking water and food.

Dead Babies Found In Pedro Ernesto Hospital In Rio De Janeiro THE bodies of 40 newborn babies and fetuses have been found abandoned in

a Brazilian hospital morgue, some forgotten for years, authorities say.

Some of the small corpses had been moldering in a morgue refrigerator for as long as five years at the city-administered Pedro Ernesto Hospital in Rio de Janeiro.Officials also found a number of body parts which prosecutors said were probably left over from emergency amputations.“It's like something from a horror film,” prosecutor Ana Cristina Huth Macedo said.“Our goal now is to give the bodies a dignified burial as soon as possible.”The hospital is renowned for delivering high-risk births, which explained why so many babies would have died, she said.The hospital's director, Rodolfo Acatuassu Nunes, told Brazilian television the bodies of the deceased

and stillborn infants had never been claimed by their parents.“It has to do with a social problem: people don't come back to get the body of their baby if it has died,” he said.Prosecutors have been unable to identify 15 of the bodies, and all the deceased infants will undergo genetic testing to determine who their parents were.The case came to light after prosecutors were asked by authorities to investigate the whereabouts of one infant who it was later determined was delivered stillborn to a crack-addicted mother.Officials determined that a year after the baby's death, it still had not been buried, leading them to the discovery of dozens more unburied infant corpses.“We have to find out if it's the hospital or the families that are at fault,” Huth Macedo told reporters.

Indian Court Recognizes Gender Self-Identification

In a ruling that human rights groups are calling historic, India's Supreme Court on Tuesday granted the country's transsexual and transgender individuals the right to self-identify their gender.The ruling means transsexual and transgender people and those who identify as belonging to the "third gender" will not be required to submit medical evidence of their sexuality to be recognized by the government as a member of that gender, said Tripti Tandon, a lawyer for one of the plaintiffs.A plea was filed before the Supreme Court by India's National Legal Services Authority in 2012 on behalf of the transsexual and "hijra," or third-gender, communities."The Supreme Court ruled that everyone has the fundamental right to have their gender identified and recognized in the law without any discrimination," Tandon said. "And it's self-identification of the gender as opposed to medically or surgically assigned one."The high court also issued a series of guidelines to India's federal government and state administrations for enforcement of its orders, she added.The ruling states that "gender identity is integral to the dignity of an individual and is at the core of 'personal autonomy' and 'self-determination.'"Hijras, the ruling said, must be

considered a third gender "over and above binary genders under our Constitution and the laws."The ruling allows females to identify as males and males to identify as females, and no sex reassignment surgery is required for recognition of one's self-defined gender.Human rights groups praised the ruling, but used the opportunity to push for changes in another law that criminalizes consensual homosexual relationships.Tuesday's ruling has the potential to alter the lives of people who have suffered oppression, Amnesty International's program director in India, Shashikumar Velath, said in a statement.But, he noted, the same Supreme Court has overturned a lower court's decision to decriminalize homosexual relationships. The law bans people from engaging in "carnal acts against the order of nature" and dates back to British colonial times.The court's ruling on transgender, transsexual and third-gender people recognizes that their plight cannot be ignored, said Graeme Reid, director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights Program at Human Rights Watch."It begins the process of re-establishing the important social role that third-gender people played in traditional Indian society," he said.

US Airways Apologises For Explicit Image Sent On Twitter

US Airways has apologised after an explicit photo was sent from its official Twitter account in response to a customer complaint.It said in a statement that it was trying to flag the image as inappropriate but instead mistakenly included it in a message.The tweet was deleted after approximately an hour but not before it had been retweeted hundreds of times.The airline said it regretted the error and was reviewing its processes.The image, which featured a naked woman and a toy plane, had originally been sent to the company's Twitter account by another user, it said.It was then attached to a tweet that was sent to a US Airways customer who had taken to the social network to express her frustration that her flight was delayed.Once the mistake had been realised US Airways deleted the offending tweet and issued an apology. "We apologise for an inappropriate image recently shared as a link in one of our responses. We've removed the

tweet and are investigating," it said on its Twitter feed.The company has more than 420,000 followers on its Twitter account and has not tweeted since.US Airways is merged with American Airlines, who were also caught up in a Twitter controversy on Monday after a 14-year old Dutch girl sent a tweet to the airline implying she was part of al-Qaeda group and planning an attack.American Airlines responded via Twitter saying that her details would be passed to the FBI for investigation.Both tweets have now been deleted and the girl's Twitter account has been suspended. Dutch police said that Twitter had disclosed to them the internet address that the tweet was written from and that they had questioned a 14-year-old girl who had now been released pending further enquiries.However, other copycat tweets now appear to be being sent to American Airlines from other teenagers' Twitter accounts, according to the Washington Post.

Man Jailed For Using Wife As Sex Slave

A Hastings man found guilty last month of using his wife as a sex slave was sentenced to nine years in prison.The man was found guilty by a jury at Napier District Court on multiple counts of rape, assault and threatening to kill for a series of attacks against his wife in 2012.Judge Tony Adeane said during sentencing that the man breached the "trust that is implicit in all marriages".He was sentenced to nine years imprisonment for the multiple counts of rape, nine months for assault and one year for threatening to kill his wife.He cannot be named in order to protect the identity of his victim, who came to New Zealand following an arranged marriage.The jury found the man guilty on eight charges and not guilty on one charge. It was hung on a further eight charges.

The man kept his wife in fear by using a 45cm-long knife, kept by their bed, to intimidate and frighten the woman into having sex, while physically abusing and threatening to kill her.When police attended a domestic violence incident at the couple's home on Boxing Day, 2012, the woman confessed she was being raped and beaten.Hastings police Detective Rob Parker said at the time the attacks showed domestic violence and severe abuse "exists in all facets of society, it doesn't matter the culture or the demographic".During the trial the court heard how divorce in an arranged marriage was something not "done lightly".Following last month's verdict police also praised the brave woman after she broke away from her arranged marriage to tell authorities about her husband's recurring sexual attacks.

Over Rs 50 Lakh Worth Gold Seized From Air Passengers

Gold weighing 1.7397 kg totally and valued at Rs 50.93 lakh was seized and three passengers, including a Singapore citizen, were arrested by customs officials at the airport in Kochi on Tuesday for allegedly attempting to smuggle the precious metal in different forms. While two of the passengers arrived from Singapore, the other from Dubai. All the three had been arrested and further investigations were on, a customs press release said. Air Intelligence officials found a gold rod weighing 529.2 grams concealed inside the cartridge of a fax printer from the baggage of Mohamed Riyas from Chennai. They also found two gold rods were

bent and made into a wheel form and cleverly concealed inside the two wheels of a trolley bag of Jamal Mohamed, a citizen of Singapore. The total weight of the two gold rods is 392.9 gm. Naushad, a native of Kasargod, was caught while attempting to smuggle gold by concealing two gold rods and a gold plate in his checked-in-baggage. The two gold rods, coated with rhodium, weighing 701 gm were kept concealed underneath the aluminum beading of a laptop bag. He also concealed a gold sheet weighing 116.6 gm inside a metallic measuring tape. The total quantity seized from him was 817.6 gm, the release said.

Mother Admits Killing Six Children After Police Find Seven Bodies In Garage

AUTHORITIES say a woman accused of killing six babies that she gave birth to over 10 years told investigators that she either strangled or suffocated the children and then put them in boxes in her garage.

According to a probable cause statement released by police, Megan Huntsman said that between 1996 and 2006, she gave birth to at least seven babies at her home and that all but one of them were born alive.Huntsman, 39, said she killed them immediately after they were born, and put their bodies in the boxes. The statement said each baby was wrapped in either a towel or a shirt, and placed in a plastic bag.Huntsman is being held on USD$6 million bail — USD$1 million for each baby she’s accused of killing. It wasn’t immediately clear if she had an attorney.Huntsman was arrested last Sunday on six counts of murder after police found the infants’ tiny bodies. A seventh baby found appears to have been stillborn, Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Buhman said.Formal charges have not yet been filed against Huntsman and no other arrests

have been made, but Buhman said the investigation remains open.Investigators were trying to determine if the seven babies had the same father or multiple fathers, Buhman said.The gruesome case has raised a series of questions about how the killings occurred despite Huntsman maintaining what neighbours said seemed like a normal existence. Police declined to comment on a motive and on what Huntsman said during an interview with investigators.Her estranged husband found the first infant’s body while cleaning out the garage after recently getting out of prison. Authorities do not believe he was aware of the killings and he isn’t a person of interest at this time.Police Captain Michael Roberts said officers responded to a call from him last Saturday about a dead infant, and then they found the six other bodies.Family and neighbours identified the

estranged husband as Darren West, who has been in prison on drug-related charges.Roberts said police believe West and Huntsman were together when the babies were born.“We don’t believe he had any knowledge of the situation,” Roberts said.Asked how West could not have known about the situation, Roberts replied, “That’s the million-dollar question. Amazing.”The babies’ bodies were sent to the Utah medical examiner’s office for tests, including one to determine the cause of death. DNA samples taken from the suspect and her husband will determine definitively whether the two are the parents, as investigators believe.Huntsman also has three daughters — one teenager and two young adults — who lived at the house.Neighbours in the middle-class neighbourhood say they were shocked

by the accusations and perplexed that the woman’s older children still living in the home didn’t know their mother was pregnant or notice anything suspicious.Late Sunday, West’s family issued a statement saying they were in a “state of shock and confusion.”“We are mourning this tragic loss of life and we are trying to stay strong and help each other through this awful event,” the statement said before asking for privacy.

'Spiritual Healer' Arrested Over Historic Sexual Assault Charges At Wentworthville In Sydney's

WestA man who claimed to offer "spiritual healing" has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman 12 years ago at Wentworthville in Sydney's west.Police say the woman, who was 27 at the time, met the man after responding to an advertisement offering "spiritual consultation" in a community newspaper in August 2002.Police allege the man who claimed to be an expert in astrology, numerology, meditation and black magic, told the woman to visit him at his business on Station Street.The first time the woman met the man, police allege she was indecently assaulted.About a week later when they met again, police allege the man indecently and sexually assaulted the woman under the guise of a spiritual healing technique.The man allegedly told the woman not to tell anyone what happened.Detectives from the Sex Crimes Squad

began investigating the allegations earlier this year and arrested a 49-year-old man in Bexley North. He has been charged with one count of sexual assault and two counts of indecent assault.Detective Inspector Michael Haddow says their investigations have revealed advertisements about the healing centre were placed in Fijian, Chinese, Macedonian, Indian and Spanish local newspapers between 2000 and 2002.He says any other alleged victims should contact them."This is a matter where we are seeking assistance with either witnesses or certainly if there are other victims who attended this centre in Wentworthville in the early 2000s," Inspector Haddow said."We certainly urge those people to come forward and clearly the police will deal with these people with the utmost respect and provide them with assistance."

A US judge says Michael Jackson's mother should pay the promoter of her son's ill-fated comeback concerts more than $US800,000 in costs associated with her failed negligent hiring lawsuit. Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos issued a tentative ruling in Los Angeles on Monday against Katherine Jackson.The five-month trial ended with a jury determining that AEG Live LLC did not

negligently hire the doctor convicted of causing Michael Jackson's death in 2009.AEG Live initially sought more than $US1.2 million to cover the cost of court reporters and exhibits. Katherine Jackson's lawyers claimed only about a quarter of that amount was justified.Both sides have agreed not to argue the tentative ruling, although once finalised it can be appealed.

Best Roast Leg Of LambIngredients 1 bulb garlic, 3 cloves peeled and crushed, the others left whole 1 small bunch fresh rosemary, half the leaves removed and coarsely chopped, half in sprigs zest of 1 lemon olive oil 2 kg quality leg of lamb sea salt freshly ground black pepper 1.5 kg potatoes, peeled and cut in half For the mint sauce4 tablespoons chopped fresh mint leaves 1 teaspoon sugar 2 pinches salt 1 tablespoon hot water 3 tablespoons wine vinegar Method This is a British classic everyone loves, especially at Easter. It's easy to make and is so tasty...Preheat the oven to 200ºC and place a roasting dish for the potatoes on the

bottom. Mix the crushed garlic, chopped rosemary, lemon zest and olive oil together. Season the lamb with salt and pepper and rub the marinade into it. Place on the hot bars of the oven above the tray. Boil the potatoes, simmer for 10 minutes and scuff the edges. Add the rosemary sprigs and whole garlic cloves, season with salt and pepper and drizzle over a good lug of olive oil. Tip the potatoes into the tray and place under the lamb to catch all the lovely juices. To make the mint sauce, mix the chopped mint, sugar, salt, hot water and wine vinegar. Cook the lamb for about an hour and 15 minutes if you want it pink, or an hour and a half if you want it more well done. Take it out of the oven and cover with tinfoil and leave for 15 minutes before serving. Carve and serve with the potatoes and mint sauce.

Lemon Chicken Salad

Ingredients:• 1 small head of green leaf lettuce • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • juice of 1 lemon • 1 tbsp. oil • 1 tbsp. freshly chopped tarragon • salt and pepper to taste • vinaigrette salad dressing to tasteDirections:Wash and dry the lettuce. Tear into small pieces and set aside.Slice chicken breasts into strips and

then cut strips into small pieces.Heat oil in a medium-sized pan, add the chicken, and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until the chicken is lightly browned.Add lemon juice, tarragon, and salt and pepper to taste. Cook for another 4 to 5 minutes until chicken is tender.Toss the lettuce with the vinaigrette dressing. Add chicken, lemon, and tarragon mixture and toss.Serve immediately.

Five Young People Dead After Violence At University House

Five first-degree murder charges have been laid against 22-year-old Matthew de Grood. All six were at a house party in the northwest community of Brentwood to celebrate the last day of university classes. Gaby Zuniga, who attended a vigil at a local art college, knew all of the victims, many of the people at the party and the man charged with murder."He's been in the group when we hang out. I've spoken to him a handful of times but he never seemed like the kind of person who would do something like this," she said."He was quiet and he was shy. but I never would have thought he would do something like this."

Zuniga says she's having a hard time accepting what happened."I'm struggling but I have my friends and my family and I've been seeing counselling," she said.Barkley Hunter, Josh’s father, said his family from Priddis, Alta., wants to tell his story, but is waiting for other family members to come to Calgary. “We are still in shock,” he said."We want people to know what a wonderful person Josh was."He said many of the 22-year-old's friends were at the family home Tuesday to offer condolences and remember their friend. The family is working to make funeral arrangements.

CTF Wants More Details From ICBC On Overcharging Of

240,000 DriversICBC has to pay back $39 million it overcharged

The Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation has some advice for ICBC after it was revealed about 240,000 customers were overcharged on optional insurance and about 350,000 were undercharged: come clean on more of the details.BC Director Jordan Bateman points out we now know ICBC has been working on this for weeks or months. He says there will be a lot of media outlets and watchdog groups working to find out who knew what, and when.“My advice to ICBC now is come as clean as possible; tell us what happened, give us all the details and the timeline. Otherwise, we’re gonna dig it out through FOI,” says Bateman.He says it’s unbelievable there’s been no word from ICBC on the error until

now, adding the insurance corporation has let its customers down by not releasing anything sooner.Bateman tells us when executives are getting salaries of a couple hundred thousand dollars a year, you expect better.“I think customers should be looking at other options. I think there should be a renewed look at whether we even need an ICBC anymore.”Bateman suggests it may be a good idea to look at what other provinces are doing with private insurance options to see if money can be saved.ICBC has to pay back the $39 million it has overcharged drivers.It also undercharged by $71 million, but cannot ask customers for that money back.

Boy, 15, Charged With Regina Mall Stabbings Of 4 Men

Victims recovering from injuries after Cornwall Centre attacksA 15-year-old boy who was arrested after four people were stabbed at Regina's Cornwall Centre mall made a brief appearance on multiple charges in youth court Wednesday.The teenager, standing in the prisoner's box in a province-issued blue jumpsuit, did not look up while his case was dealt with. He'll be back in court on April 29.Four men were stabbed with a knife inside the busy downtown Regina mall at around 6 p.m. CST Tuesday. Three were rushed to hospital, but none of their injuries are considered life-threatening.Police confronted a knife-wielding suspect and after a discussion, he threw the knife to the ground. Then officers arrested him.The media spoke to Regina police Staff Sgt. Evan Bray who said police worked late into the night reviewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses, the victims and the suspect.The 15-year-old has been charged with:Three counts of aggravated assault. One count of assault with a weapon. Two counts of breach of an undertaking.Numerous people were in the mall and some said the suspect was wearing a bandana, leading to speculation the bloody attack might have been gang related.

However, there's no indication that's the case, Bray said. "We have nothing linking him to a particular gang," he said.After making the arrest, police are not looking for further suspects, he said. Like many of those in the pews, Prime Minister Stephen Harper wore a green tie; his wife had a green blouse under her jacket. The burned remains of the 31-year-old, who was four months pregnant, were found on a beach in Delta five days after she was reported missing. He's now serving a sentence of life without parole for 15 years after being convicted of second degree murder.The lawsuit was initiated by his 10-year-old daughter's guardians.In reaching his decision, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Robert Punnett was forced to imagine a world where Manjit Panghali was not murdered — where the pregnant school teacher, instead, took maternity leave before

returning to work as an elementary school teacher, and then watched as her bright, thriving daughter Maya went on to study at university.These were some of the criteria Punnett used to calculate losses, past and present, for financial support and childcare — an amount he finally set at more than $600,000.Factored into the calculations was an assumption that had the crime not happened, Mukhtiar the father, would have continued working as a high school teacher.Maya Panghali is now being raised by her aunt, Manjit's sister.Although the court has made the award, collecting the money is another matter.The killer's family is fighting for parts of the estate.

Not ruling out a run for the mayor’s seat

Surrey City Councillor Barinder Rasode is breaking ranks with Mayor Dianne Watts and the Surrey First party.She said the relationship with her team has become increasingly hostile.“As I’ve spoken out on significant issues, I have felt isolated by my team,” she says. “For that reason, I believe to properly move forward on the issues of public safety, spending at city hall and community consultation, I need to sit as an independent.”She says the problem comes from the top down. “Absolutely. For example, no council member — even myself, as the chair of public safety and the police committee — was invited to be a part of the mayor’s task force.”“I think that once you start doing policy in closed board rooms and not at the council table with the public in full view, that is a challenge,” she adds.Rasode isn’t ruling it out a shot at the mayor’s chair in this fall’s civic election, but says she’ll only do it if Watts decides not to run again.

“When that option is available — I hope it will be soon so that the community is able to look at people’s record and what mandate they will bring forward — I think that’s a conversation for that time,” she notes.

Rcmp Has Suspect In Canada Revenue Online Theft

The RCMP has identified at least one suspect in its probe into the alleged theft of confidential information from the Canada Revenue Agency’s website.In a statement on Tuesday morning, the national police force said it asked the CRA to remain quiet for three days about the possible infraction in order to pursue its investigation.“Late Friday afternoon, given that further access to data was no longer possible and that we had identified a viable investigative path, the RCMP asked CRA to delay advising the public of the breach until Monday morning,” RCMP spokesperson, Corporal Lucy Shorey, said in the communiqué.“This deferral permitted us to advance our investigation over the weekend, identify possible offender(s) and has helped mitigate further risk.”About 900 social insurance numbers were stolen from CRA computers, the revenue department said on Monday, following a shutdown of its public online services caused by the Heartbleed Internet bug. The CRA statement was one of the first disclosures by an organization that it had lost data to someone exploiting the vulnerability.However, the government has also come under fire for its handling of the threat and the speed with which it has acted to contain the problem.“There are many questions about the response and the timing of the response,” NDP MP Charlie Angus

Businessman Fined $70,000 In Immigration Fraud Case

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced that Sardar Hussain Hasan (AKA Sardar Hussain Hasan Al Bebany) recently pleaded guilty in Nova Scotia Provincial Court to two counts of misrepresentation under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). He was ordered to pay a $70,000 fine.This case began on July 2, 2013, when CBSA officers at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport discovered that Hasan’s son was attempting to import his father’s Jordanian passport, in the name of Al Bebany. A CBSA investigation revealed that the passport belonged to Hasan, an Iraqi and Jordanian citizen with Canadian permanent resident status, who was using the passport in a different name to circumvent his Canadian residence requirements. By using a dual passport

scheme, Hasan had, over a period of almost four years, created the appearance of living in Canada when in fact he was not. He did this by using his Iraqi passport in the name of Hasan to enter Canada, and his Jordanian passport in the name of Al Bebany when travelling extensively abroad. The offences were identified when Hasan applied to renew his permanent resident card, and when he made statements to immigration officials that he had been outside of Canada for only 71 days over the previous four years, when in reality he had never permanently resided in Canada.In October 2013, CBSA investigators charged Hasan under IRPA for using two different passports to circumvent his residency requirements in order to maintain his permanent resident status.

As with your daughter, some kids do have temporary hearing loss due to the accumulation of fluid in the middle ear, but it usually goes away with treatment.It's very rare, however, for kids to develop permanent hearing loss, even when they've had several ear infections. A child with frequent or chronic ear infections is at risk for permanent hearing loss only when damage has been done to the eardrum, the bones of the ear, or the hearing nerve. Since

your daughter's hearing appears to return to normal after treatment for an ear infection, she's probably not at risk for permanent hearing loss. But if you're concerned, talk to your doctor about scheduling a hearing exam.If your daughter's ear infections continue to be a problem, the doctor might refer her to an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor), who may suggest ear tube placement to help reduce the incidence of ear infections and limit the potential problems they can cause to her hearing.

Chomping Watermelon Lowers Your BP

Researchers have claimed that watermelon could significantly reduce blood pressure in overweight individuals both at rest and while under stress.

Florida State University Associate Professor Arturo Figueroa said that the pressure on the aorta and on the heart decreased after consuming watermelon extract. Figueroa's 12-week study focused on 13 middle-aged, obese men and women who also suffered from high blood pressure. To simulate cold weather conditions, one hand of the subject was dipped into 39 degree water (or 4 degrees Celsius) while Figueroa's team took their blood pressure and other vital measurements. Meanwhile, the group was divided into two. For the first six weeks, one

group was given four grams of the amino acid L-citrulline and two grams of L-arginine per day, both from watermelon extract. The other group was given a placebo for 6 weeks. Then, they switched for the second six weeks. The results showed that consuming watermelon had a positive impact on aortic blood pressure and other vascular parameters. Notably, study participants showed improvements in blood pressure and cardiac stress while both at rest and while they were exposed to the cold water.

Go get your blood sugar checked as lower glucose levels may make couple go 'hangry' and even more likely to lash out aggressively."The study shows how one simple, often overlooked factor - hunger caused by low levels of blood glucose - may play a role in marital arguments, confrontations and possibly even some domestic violence," said Brad Bushman, a professor of communication and psychology at the Ohio State University.People can relate to this idea that when they get hungry, they get cranky. It even has a slang term: "hangry" (hungry + angry), Bushman explained.The research involved 107 married couples. The study started with the couples completing a relationship satisfaction measure, which asked each spouse how much they agreed with statements like "I feel satisfied with our relationship".

In a 21-day study, researchers found that levels of blood glucose in married people, measured each night, predicted how angry they would be with their spouse that evening.At the end of the 21 days, people who had generally lower levels of glucose were willing to blast their spouses with unpleasant noises at a higher volume and for a longer time than those who had higher glucose levels."We found that being 'hangry' can affect our behaviour in a bad way, even in our most intimate relationships," he added.Even those who reported they had good relationships with their spouses were more likely to express anger if their blood glucose levels were lower.Listen to Bushman: Before you have a difficult conversation with your spouse, make sure you are not hungry.Blood glucose levels can be brought up most quickly by eating carbohydrates or sugary foods.

SurgeryLoyola University Medical Center has successfully implanted a newly approved aortic heart valve device in a patient without doing an open-heart surgery, which comes as a major relief to heart patients.The device called the Medtronic CoreValve System, which has recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, is deployed with a

catheter which is inserted in an artery in the groin and guided up to the heart to take over the function of a diseased valve.The procedure is much less invasive than traditional open-heart surgery.Loyola physicians also implanted the device in patients participating in clinical trials, making the hospital the first Illinois hospital to implement the procedure.

Severe Sleep Apnea Could Up Risk Of Stroke, Cancer And

DeathResearchers have linked moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea to an increased risk of stroke, cancer and death.Results of the 20-year follow-up study show that people with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea were four times more likely to die (hazard ratio = 4.2), nearly four times more likely to have a stroke (HR = 3.7), three times more likely to die from cancer (HR = 3.4), and 2.5 times more likely to develop cancer. Lead author Nathaniel S. Marshall, PhD, senior lecturer in clinical trials at the University of Sydney in Australia, said sleep apnea is a common disease that has a powerful impact on public

health because it greatly increases the risk of strokes, cancers and mortality from any cause.The study involved 397 adults who are participating in the ongoing Busselton Health Study. Objective sleep data were gathered in 1990 using a portable home sleep testing device. Participants with a history of stroke or cancer were excluded from selected analyses.Prevalence rates were 4.6 percent for moderate to severe OSA and 20.6 percent for mild OSA. During the 20-year follow-up period there were 77 deaths and 31 strokes, as well as 125 cancer events that included 39 fatalities. Mild sleep apnea was not associated with increased health risks.

Rishi Kapoor is getting fed up of answering queries about his son Ranbir's relationships, marriage and career plans as reported. "Don't ask me anything about Ranbir," snaps the 61-year-old actor who has just started shooting for Umesh Shukla's All Is Well whose second schedule has been delayed by a month or so because Abhishek Bachchan was busy with Happy New Year. "He and I are two distinct individuals, so it's not right to constantly bombard me with questions about Ranbir." The duo was last seen together in Abhinav Kashyap's Besharam, with Neetu Kapoor. IIFA Sued For 7 Million DollarsSlated to take place later this month in Florida, USA, this awards event might be in jeopardy

Travel agent Akarsh Kolaprath, who runs a Florida-based enterprise, has filed a lawsuit against Wizcraft, the organisers of the 15th International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA awards) for alleged breach of trust. Kolaprath claims that about three years ago, he struck a deal with Andre Timmins and Viraf Sarkari of Wizcraft through his family company, 7M tours. As part of the deal, he was apparently asked to help them out with co-ordination of finances and taking the award ceremony to the United States this year.Kolaprath claims to have spent the last three years and around $265,000 on consulting and making travel arrangements for the organisation. In return, Wizcraft apparently promised him 3 percent of the entire profit.

Kolaprath says that he even managed hotel bookings for the event, which is going to be held from April 24 to 27. It seems that the event organisers have abruptly changed their mind and decided to do their own bookings and arrangements thereby cancelling his services. Kolaprath has now sued Wizcraft for $7 million dollars for leaving him in the lurch without giving him adequate reasons.His claims are: 1. Wizcraft/IIFA promised to pay him 3 percent of the anticipated $17.5 million in revenue that the organisation expected to earn from hosting the awards. 2. Wizcraft/IIFA further promised to pay him all revenues earned in excess of $17.5 million. 3. His company, 7M tours, reported a loss of more than $400,000 in hotel cancellation fees due to change

of dates.Talking to hitlist from Florida, Kolaprath said, `This has affected us very badly; we have been working on the whole thing. I was the one who introduced them (Wizcraft) to the sponsors. But suddenly after we had done all the arrangements, we got to know that they were dealing directly with the sponsors and wanted me out of the picture. Their intention is not right.` He has now asked for a stay on the event till this issue is cleared. ̀ They have been trying to reach some kind of settlement but I will go ahead with my case,` Kolaprath said.When contacted, Sabbas Joseph, director of Wizcraft and IIFA, sent a statement on behalf of his company. The statement read, `The claims made by Akarsh/&7M tours are false

and frivolous. It is a concocted story lacking any substance. Since the matter is sub judice, we shall respond to these claims appropriately before the court.`Controversy's child?The brand ambassador for IIFA since its inception in 2000, Amitabh Bachchan was apparently miffed with the organisers in 2011 as not only did they decide to host the event in Sri Lanka without consulting him, but they also signed on Salman Khan to host the same. Big B had tweeted then, `Not coming to Toronto IIFA... IIFA says my services are not required.`Interestingly, Sallu received flak for agreeing to attend IIFA that year. When Vice President of Tamil Film Producers' Council, A Prabhakaran, asked for a ban on the actor, Sallu allegedly replied that he didn't mind being banned.

David Fincher will not direct an upcoming biopic of Steve Jobs, after negotiations over the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo helmsman’s paycheque and creative control over the film fell flat.Fincher, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his work directing the 2009 film The Social Network, had demanded $10 million in upfront fees as well as marketing control of the Sony Pictures film, which is to be based on the best-selling Walter Isaacson biography Steve Jobs.According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fincher may re-enter negotiations with Sony, who allowed the director substantial creative control over

2014 Kia Soul Since the 2014 Kia Soul has an entirely new structure that’s not at all related to the outgoing model; and it's quite the turnaround in occupant protection compared to that lackluster performer.Safety ratings are almost entirely out for the new Kia Soul, and it's earned top five-star federal safety ratings, as well as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ nod. Kia goes so far as to say that it expects to make the new Top Safety Pick+ list, although the IIHS hasn't yet released results for the model in that category. All models include a total of six airbags, with dual front airbags, seat-mounted side bags, and full-length side curtain bags. Also worth noting that even the base Soul includes superior four-wheel disc brakes, while many other inexpensive small sedans include just drum brakes in back. Anti-lock braking, Brake Assist, and electronic stability control are all included, as is Hill-start Assist.Outward visibility is still a mixed bag—great out in front and to the side, with a rather high driving position, but somewhat difficult for lane changes due to the thick rear pillar. A rear camera system is included with the top Exclaim model, as well as with the Soul Plus, provided you get the $500 UVO eServices Package.The 2014 Kia Soul is offered in three different trim levels: base Soul, Soul Plus (+), and Soul Exclaim (!). Prices start at just $15,495 for a reasonably

well-equipped base model with a six-speed manual gearbox and the 1.6-liter engine. But if you’re willing to add a five-figure sum to that modest bottom line, you can load up a Soul to include things that are unusual in a mainstream model--like a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and cooled/ventilated front seats. Inside, there’s special glossy piano black trim, as well as a cooled glovebox, a ten-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.Options on both the Plus and Exclaim include upgraded Infinity audio, LED speaker-mounted mood lighting, navigation, and a panoramic sunroof, while you can option a top Exclaim to include HID headlamps, push-button start, automatic climate control, and full leather seating with heating and ventilation/cooling in front and heated outboard positions in back.Altogether, the 2014 Soul Exclaim adds up to less than $27k with the whole shebang—literally, as you add something called The Whole Shebang Package ($2,500) to add the leather seats, ventilated front seats, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, push-button start, HID low-beam headlamps, and Supervision gauge cluster with integral TFT color display. and the panoramic roof..Fuel economy numbers for the 2014 Kia Soul have risen slightly with the introduction of direct injection to the 2.0-liter engine, although the numbers for the base 1.6-liter model are slightly lower than before in the city.The 2014 Soul now rates at 24 mpg city and 30 highway with the 1.6-liter engine—and that holds whether you opt for the manual gearbox or automatic transmission. 2.0-liter models, with the automatic, get 23 mpg city, 31 highway. And if you opt for the Soul Eco model, you'll get the best mileage of the lineup, at 24 mpg city, 31 highway.On an early drive, we saw nearly 25 mpg over several hours and about 140 miles, with driving conditions mostly split between urban-freeway, commute conditions and rural, twisty, hilly two-laners.The Eco model includes a feature called Idle Stop and Go (ISG) plus low-rolling-resistance tires. The system could conceivably save up to six percent in particularly dense stop-and-go driving, by smartly shutting the engine off. Unfortunately, that kind of improvement doesn’t show on the window-sticker EPA rating.The Soul does include an Eco Mode button that softens throttle response somewhat and changes shift points.

Fiji's experienced fly-half Seremaia Bai assembled 32 Fijians currently playing in France to undergo IRB levels one and two coaching courses at Narbonne Rugby Club.Bai who currently plays for defending Top 14 champions Castres Olympique in France has earned 49 caps in a 14-year career with the Flying Fijians.A report on the IRB website quoted Ba as saying that the course proved to be an eye-opener.“It was a great experience, very productive and refreshing. Coaching is very different to playing and the course opened my eyes to the fact that it is not as easy as I first thought and that I have a lot to learn," he said.“My long-term goal is to coach Fiji but at the moment I am working on the basics and setting up a foundation for future coaching. I have been visiting villages and places in Fiji where I know

there is potential and untapped talent providing them with some coaching and sharing my experience as a Rugby player in a professional environment.“The feedback I got from the other players on the course is just awesome. Very positive and you can tell they are hungry for more. If courses like this are made accessible back home in the future it would be an even greater benefit and would really develop Rugby all around Fiji. Most of the players are looking forward to sharing what they have learned with their village teams and particularly the youth players.”During the three days, the players underwent practical training in key factor and functional role analysis, player profiling, planning, selection, coaching style and process, and principles of attack and defence.
