Serving – The overall design of the building is perfect for reaching out to serve the community. I envisioned a health fair in the gathering area, a family conference in the big room, and youth events that draw youth from all over the city taking place in the student center. Each one of these events creates new “doors” for people to be introduced to the life and ministry of First Baptist Church. FIRST THOUGHTSDavid Hull, Pastor

I put on a hard hat yesterday and took my first tour of the new building construction. It is amazing. With every step I took I grew more excited about ministry opportunities that can happen in this new part of our building. Inside this newsletter you will see a construction update that will give information about the building progress. Let me offer some of my hopes, dreams and prayers that went through my mind as I toured the building.

Knowing – I thought about all of the youth who will learn about Jesus in the new student center. The big room makes a great place for a larger youth meeting, the loft area will be great for youth hanging out in fellowship together, and then the classroom space is excellent for Sunday School classes (and other classes) of students learning together. My prayer: Lord, let the space be used for youth to come to know Jesus!

Loving – We love God through worship. That is the best way that we can offer our adoration to the Almighty. I thought about that as we looked at the new multi-purpose area, which is a retrofitting of the old gym. During the week it will be great for sports like volleyball and basketball. It will also make a great place for large dinners, conferences and concerts. But on Sunday mornings it will be transformed into a worship center for First Fellowship. Not only will the larger area allow us room to grow in attendance, but the space is nicely designed for worship. I dreamed about the room full of people offering their love for God through worship.

As we reach out in service to the community, we invite people into the fellowship of the church.

Together -- A gathering place that is between the multipurpose room and the student center will be wonderful for people talking and sharing fellowship with one another. The smaller room that replaces the current Patio Room will offer rich opportunities for smaller groups from the church and community to live life “together.” Of course, a support kitchen right there will help greatly with the fellowship opportunities.

THANK YOUThank you notes have been received from R.D. and Dathern Moon, Jackie and Rhett Burton, Ann Morea, and Fred Seeley from

the Parkinson’s Support Group of Huntsville. They have been placed on the bulletin board

across from the church office.

Renovation Update- April 2012Excellent progress has been made over the past few weeks, and the project remains within budget and on schedule for November 2012 completion.

Brick work is nearly complete on the front of the administrative area, and the “store-front” glass and entry doors are being installed. The rough plumbing, electrical and HVAC work for the admin area has been completed, and the steel has been sprayed with a fire retardant material. The roof for the admin suite is complete and the area is “in the dry.” A “white coat” will be applied once the HVAC units for the gym are placed on the admin roof. The contractors will begin paving that front parking area soon, and we will gain access to some additional

parking spaces! The initial pavement will only be a “base-coat”. The final coat of asphalt, along with permanent striping, will be completed near the end of the project. The front entry area framing is nearly complete, and the new fitness room doors have been created. The hallway leading to the gathering space has been framed, the roof over that hallway is complete, and electrical and HVAC work is underway in the area.

The second floor restrooms on the right by the ramp entry to the chapel have been framed and mechanical work for them is nearly complete. The contractors have almost completed the framing for the arches in the gathering space ceiling. Windows on the right side of the second floor hallway allow reflected light to enter. The grand staircase leading down to the gathering space will soon be installed. At the end of the hallway, to the right, the ramp leading to the second floor of the existing facility has been completed. The contractors are finishing some block-work against the existing building. The new facility is separated from the existing building by a four-hour firewall. At the end of the hallway to the left, the entrance hall to the student center mezzanine area has been framed.

Speaking of the student center - Wow! Tremendous progress has been made, and the framing is nearly complete on the ground floor. The prominent curve of the student worship space is now evident from St Clair. Metal roofing has been installed, and the roofers will soon have that space in the dry. Several classrooms of various sizes have been framed, and mechanical work in the area is progressing well. Two sets of stairs leading from the upstairs mezzanine to the worship space will soon be completed. The student center also has some interior brick-work scheduled to begin shortly. The student center will feature several “student-tested” materials like brick, stained concrete and corrugated metal.

Framing has been completed for the main restrooms, kitchen and social room, and mechanical work in those areas is underway. Framing continues in the gathering space and the large curved wall by the railroad track is taking shape. The oak trees that will be visible through the glass make a beautiful backdrop. The roofers have the gathering space in the dry now. Both the student center and gym will have double-door airlocks for sound containment and those entry spaces are being worked now. Inside the gym, the work consists mainly of mechanical items. Duct work and sprinkler pipes are being installed high in the rafters. Electrical work is also progressing well. The staircase in the back left corner of the gym is being rebuilt to allow an additional access point to the administrative area and Governor's Drive entry.

It is not uncommon to find 8-10 subcontractors all working in parallel: brick layers, block masons, heavy steel installers, framers, electricians, plumbers, sprinkler crews, HVAC installers, roofers, and more...These are exciting times as the building takes form, and the plans become reality!

Knowing, loving, serving Christ . . . together. That is our mission! I can’t wait for November to get here!
