Message from the Padre

As we enter the fifth and last week of Lent, our Gospel reading gives us the story of

the death of Lazarus. Martha, who is Lazarus’ sister, expresses her sorrow and disappointment

and said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."

My dear friends, death pushes us to the limits of human reason. The question of

“when” and “why” we die will never and can never be fully understood, and the death of a love

one…is always difficult to accept. But as we are united in our sadness, we are also united by

something else…. our faith as Christians, a faith rooted in the very Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

It is through this hope that we get our comfort when someone dear to us dies. Remember, that in any situation, we are to seek and

see the Glory of God in the midst of our grief. And to see God's glory in our grief does not mean denying the reality of death, nor

does it mean rejecting the feelings that it provokes, as tears are a way of showing our sorrow because we love them and we miss

them. It does not mean in anyway a sign of our weakness. Remember when Jesus found out that his friend Lazarus had died, the

scriptures said, “Jesus wept.” Just two words …“Jesus wept” … but this is one of the most powerful passages in the Bible, be-

cause it shows the human side of Christ and that Jesus, Our Lord, is capable of experiencing sorrow and pain.

My dear friends, the point of Lazarus’ story is that “Death and Resurrection,” “Grief and God's Glory,” are part of our

life in Christ. We may not know the full meaning of death, but we have to admit that death is a part and the end of our earthly

journey.

And so on these last few days of Lent, as we pray our way towards Christ’s passion and death and resurrection... let us

also remember those who have gone before us...remembering them that they too embody the hope in the Resurrected Christ and

also the promise of eternal life.

Fifth Sunday of Lent Ezekiel 37: 12-14. Romans 8: 8-11

John 11: 1-45 or 11: 3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b - 45

What Ezekiel speaks of figuratively, Jesus does in reality!

Lazarus’ grave is opened and he rises from it, in the greatest

miracle recorded in the Gospels. Saint Paul assures us that “if

the Spirit of the One who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in

[us],” we too will have new life. As we hear these sacred words

of scripture, let us reflect on the places of death in our own lives

and how God can bring them to life again.
