The company issued a pair of press releases last week (CAT 4/15) that described what they were doing and, ostensibly, why. But few know the reality of how those words will translate to day- to-day station operations. To recap, CC announced plans to “improve program quality” under a multi-point effort that would “raise the bar for radio programming across all dayparts and platforms.” The release went on to say PDs will have access to “Premium Choice,” explaining the new plan includes “the launch of new programming and makes programming and on-air talent that’s proven to be most popular with audiences, available more broadly to local program directors in all markets for all day parts.” While no one from Clear Channel is speaking on the record about what all this means for local stations, and details are very sketchy – an email even went out last Friday telling OMs to stop talking about the upcoming moves – here’s what we have put together from a number of sources. This is unofficial and an intelligent guess based on all the folks we talked with: • April 29: That’s the expected target date for full implementation details and marching orders. WCTK/Providence morning show Technical Director Amanda Leonardo filed this report on the show’s first night: “It comes as no surprise that the sold-out concert at Mohegan Sun Arena had fans on their feet the entire show,” she says. “You never know what stops Kenny is going to pull out next. Simply walking on to the stage is never an option. So, with fans’ attention focused on his twelve-man band on stage, Chesney entered from the back of the arena on a cable-suspended seat while singing ‘She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy.’” Details: The swing is suspended completely with cables and there is no track, allowing Chesney to move in any direction over the floor seats he wants. The seat is also low over the crowd. April 20, 2009 Issue 137

Chesney Swings Into Action Kenny Chesney’s Sun City Carnival Tour opened Friday in Uncasville, CT, and Country radio -- and by extension Country Aircheck -- was there. “If I want to take somebody a beer in the back of section six or whatever, I could,” Chesney said in a press release issued this afternoon. Back to Leonardo: “‘Out Last Night’ was a crowd pleaser and the audience already knew the lyrics and helped Kenny sing it,” she says. “Split screens of different views are continually displayed on the huge screens. Blue disco ball-like lighting shines on the audience during ‘I Go Back,’ and a slideshow of local monuments ran throughout ‘Back Where I Come From.’ “The chrome-trimmed stage and his classic, fan-favorite tracks give a vintage feel to the show, mixed with a Caribbean undertone. The addition of Wailers Band member Drummie Zeb was a perfect fit. The show came to its official conclusion with Kenny’s masterful cover of John Cougar Mellencamp’s ‘Jack and Diane.’ His encore was ‘Don’t Blink,’ during which he seemed to get a little choked up. There’s no doubt he poured his heart and soul into the night’s performance.”

Coscos In Good Spirits “I’m sitting at our property right now wondering how I’m going to put this all back together.” So said BPP’s Rocco Cosco Monday afternoon (4/20) from the two acres of tornado distributed wreckage that used to be his home in Murfreesboro, TN. Last Thursday, Cosco’s friends in the music and radio biz staged a benefit to help get the family on their feet. “I thought everybody had the time of their lives,” he says of the event. “It was a great morale boost for my family. “We just got into a rental house today,” he says. “The storm displaced so many families, something like four or five hundred, that it took us 10 or 11 days to get in. Of course, we only had a couple boxes of stuff.” Cosco says they are moving aggressively to clean up and rebuild. “We’re out here with Bobcats and dumpsters trying to get going. Physically I’m doing well and the boys are healing up good. The guys at BPP have been terrific about letting me take care of things, but this process takes patience. I may need to jump back into work soon just to keep sane. “The thing that I kept hearing Thursday night, over and over from all kinds of people in this business, was, ‘We’re here for you. It’s a brother down.’ That was really an emotional thing to hear. Everybody’s spirits have been lifted – that night was just what we needed.”

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life KIIM/Tucson PD Buzz Jackson discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. Garth Brooks, Orlando, 1993: I’ve seen him a couple of times since, but the first is always the one I remember as the most amazing.2. Madonna, NYC’s Radio City Music Hall and Phoenix’ Glendale Arena: I saw her on the same day, 21 years apart. Madonna defined the 80’s for me and hearing her music brings back great memories from

high school and college.3. Jeff Bates/Love Song: This song was on the radio constantly around the time my daughter was born. 4. Michael Peterson/From Here To Eternity: I proposed to my wife Dena on stage at a Peterson concert in Florida to this song.5. Tim McGraw, Everywhere: Every song on that album could have been a single. It was like a greatest hits album all in itself.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Anything by Kanye West. • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: This will sound like sacrilege, but anything by The Beatles. I think I’m just a couple of years too young. • An album you played or listened to incessantly: Jamey Johnson, That Lonesome Song. An epic album.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Clint Black, The Galaxy Song.

Buzz Jackson

Storm Passed: BPP’s Rocco Cosco with Curb’s April Rider, who took the lead in organizing a tornado benefit for the Cosco family less than a week after their house was destroyed.

Clear Channel Changes (continued from page 1)• The Network: The backbone of the CC programming plan will be a “Premium Choice” network from which PDs can choose air talent to fill dayparts no longer served by live and local talent. Despite network usage being positioned as a “choice,” PDs believe it will instead come in the form of a “cram down.” It will either be by directive or by budget requirement, i.e., you don’t have the money to do what you would like to do. • Talent: There’s no official word on who will be available to Country PDs as part of the “Premium Choice” talent package. However, the personalities currently on CC’s “Country Road” I Heart Radio station might provide a partial clue: Billy Greenwood, KSD/St. Louis; Joe Boxer, WCOL/Columbus; Broadway, WBCT/Grand Rapids; Angie Ward, WTQR/Greensboro;

and Michael J. Fox, WPOC/Baltimore and WMZQ/Washington. • Live and Local: The CC press release noted local PDs will have “total choice and flexibility in choosing the Premium Choice programming elements. They can elect large portions, single pieces or none of the offered programming.” The CC PDs I talked with are skeptical, to say the least. Most fear there will be talent cutbacks, with the affected dayparts to be filled by their choice of talent from the network. One of the biggest question marks is how many CC Country outlets outside the top 50 markets will have any live and local dayparts remaining once the dust settles. There are some programmers inside CC who believe that most small market stations will be gutted and required to

take all or most programming from the network. • Weekends: PDs fear that very few CC stations will be live and local on the weekends, with most stations mandated to carry talent from the network. The exceptions would most likely be major market stations, especially those in PPM markets. It should also be noted that CC issued two press releases last week, the first of which itemized a number of local initiatives being put forth by the company. The “minimum level of service” commitment to local community affairs covered five areas: charitable partnerships, PSA’s, local public-affairs programming, local advisory boards and 24/7 access to station management for local officials. Our Take: On the surface, “upgrading” a station’s talent level is a noble cause. Almost everything in our lives these days – from what we get on our TV’s to the majority of the stories in our “local” newspaper – are delivered from a “national” source. But is that what people really want from their favorite radio station?
