Famous Last WordsBy Gary Keith, Executive & Teaching Pastor

The last words of a dying person are normally never forgotten. A person’s last words can reveal a lot about their values, priorities, and innermost thoughts.

For example, consider these famous last words:

P. T. Barnum (the famous circus guy), “How were the receipts today at Madison Square Garden?”

Humphrey Bogart (the famous actor), “I should never have switched from Scotch to Martinis.”

Joan Crawford (actress) was filled with anger when her maid began to pray out loud and she said, “Don’t you dare ask God to help me!”

Leonardo Da Vinci, when he looked over his life’s work said, “I have offended God and mankind because my work did not reach the quality it should have.”

Karl Marx (Marxism) turned to his housekeeper, who had urged him to tell her his last words so she could write them, shouted, “Go on get out! Last words are for fools who haven’t said enough.”

This April we will go through a two-week series (Palm Sunday and Easter), focusing on the last words of Jesus. While Jesus was on the cross, He cried out some pretty important and famous words for us to consider. These words of Jesus are filled with meaning and purpose and even though they were said before He died, they have huge ramifications for us as we celebrate His resurrection.

These famous last words are definitely not the words of someone who didn’t say enough when He was alive. These shouts are riveting and piercing and beautiful, yet shocking. These famous last words also reveal to us our Savior and point to some important truths we need to reconsider as we celebrate Easter.

On Palm Sunday we will learn the meaning behind His words, “Father, forgive them” (Luke 23:34) and “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).

On Easter Sunday we’ll look at “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43) and “It is finished” (John 19:30).

These “famous last words” teach us some of the rich doctrines of our faith – doctrines like forgiveness, the humanity of Christ and His substitutionary death, and the absolute certainty of eternity and the hope we have because of the resurrection.

Holy Week, which starts on April 17, is a wonderful time to read about the story of Jesus’ last week on earth. I want to encourage you to make this a special week in your personal life as you take time to prepare your hearts for celebrating the basis of our faith. I also want to encourage you to participate in the services we provide that week, starting with Palm Sunday, then the special Maundy Thursday service, and finally Easter Sunday. Be sure to look over the rest of this month’s Scroll to read about the details of these different services. He is risen! He is risen indeed!

Save the Date: Open House for Gary & Miriam KeithSunday, May 1, 2-5 p.m. in the Worship CenterJoin us for a special time of thanking Pastor Gary for his 30 years of service at LBF. Keep an eye on the weekly bulletins or e-Update for more details!

Maundy ThursdayBy Amanda Keys, Worship Assistant

We all know the routine: wake up, cook meals, run errands, go to work, sit in traffic, attend class, do homework, go to rehearsals or practices, race home, do some laundry, wash dishes, and hopefully find some time to relax, carry on a conversation, or even open up the Bible before heading to bed – just to start it all over the next morning.

This lifestyle could very easily be paralleled to the years of Jesus’ ministry – we see several times in the gospels where Jesus intentionally removed Himself from the crowds and activities to pray, reflect, and prepare. It is no wonder then that Jesus chose to take His last hours on earth retreated from the busyness of the world, in a private room with only His twelve disciples. This was where He chose to express the heart of the Father and His desire to do whatever was necessary for us to have eternal life.

Maundy Thursday has grown to reflect and represent this final meal of Jesus, just hours before He was crucified. The Maundy Thursday service, which derives its name from the Latin word ‘mandatum,’ meaning ‘commandment,’ begins this solemn remembrance of the four events of this day: Jesus washing the disciples’ feet, the institution of the Lord’s supper, Jesus’ agony in the garden, and the betrayal by Judas Iscariot. It is an opportunity to slow down, prepare our hearts, and reflect on what Jesus’ final days were like and the new commandment He left for us – to love one another.

We hope to see you Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m. in the Worship Center for an evening of remembering the sacrifice of Christ through music, silence, and acts of humility. Due to the reflective nature of this service, childcare will be provided for children five years and under.

In His Steps…To Be Continued in 2012By Jeff Taylor, Pastor of Teaching & Worship

In 1995 LBF created a presentation that has reached thousands of people. “In His Steps” – an interactive journey through the last days of Christ, from the triumphal entry into Jerusalem to the last supper; the Garden of Gethsemane; the denial, betrayal, and trial of Jesus; and to the cross – gives people a very human perspective of the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior. It has been something that hundreds of people look forward to each year. It has also been a great outreach event, as well and an opportunity for our LBF family to get involved.

Initially, this presentation was done every other year, but a few years ago we decided to try and do it every year. As we once again approach Good Friday, we have determined that it would be good to take a one year sabbatical in hopes of bringing “In His Steps” back in 2012 with fresh ideas and a new energy. Though we are sure this event will be missed, we believe that this year off will give us the opportunity to bring “In His Steps” back at a level like never before, to reach people with the truth of Jesus Christ.

Though we will not have “In His Steps” this year, we would like to utilize some of the story elements as small scene vignettes set up around the church on Easter Sunday. This will give people the opprtunity to consider Christ not only in our worship services, but as they meander around the campus. If you would like to help with the set-up of these scenes on Easter, please contact Pastor Jeff at [email protected].

Kids Rally for Jesus: The Thrilling Truth of Easter!By Dale Palmer, Director of His Kids Children’s Ministries

One hint: It’s not about chocolate bunnies, marshmallow chicks, or eggs!

Come see the Greatest Story ever told!

Who: All children, Kindergarten-6th grade

When: Palm Sunday, April 17, from 12:45-3:30 p.m.

Where: Worship Center, Life Bible Fellowship Church, 2426 N. Euclid Avenue, Upland, CA 91784

What: We will begin with a kids’ potluck lunch. Each family can bring their contributions for lunch to the kitchen in the Worship Center during the service hour attended. Please be sure to mark your name on anything you want returned to you, but we recommend disposable dishes. Think simple children’s finger foods that don’t need much prep. Drinks and chips will be provided by His Kids Children’s Ministries. Food assignments for our potluck lunch are as follows:

Those with last names beginning with A-M, please bring cut-up veggies or fruit & 12 sandwiches (clearly mark ingredients in the sandwiches – consider sandwiches other than peanut butter for those who are allergic).

Those with last names beginning with N-Z, please bring cookies or fruit & 12 sandwiches (clearly mark ingredients in the sandwiches – consider sandwiches other than peanut butter for those who are allergic).

After lunch, we will have an activity and then move on to a special video. “The Story of Jesus for Children” tells about the life of Jesus (based on the Gospel of Luke) told from a child’s point of view. Through the film, the children will be given a solid understanding of how a person develops a friendship with God. This film is affiliated with Campus Crusade for Christ, which is inter-denominational and international.

Parents are welcome to stay. If your child is in Kindergarten-1st grade, we ask that you stay with your child during the viewing of the film because we want to be sensitive to their reaction to the crucifixion scene. It is tastefully done, but the thought of this Man, our Savior, being killed might be a little overwhelming. The Good News is that He did not stay dead, which is the whole reason for our celebration!

Finally, the Easter season is a wonderful opportunity to present the Gospel of our Lord to those who do not know that Jesus paid the price for them to be free and live eternally with God. So come, bring your friends, neighbors, and co-workers! Invitations are available to print or email on our website (lbfchurch.com/hiskids) or you can grab some when you pick up your child from Sunday services.

His Kids Will Sing for Palm Sunday Services, April 17By Dale Palmer, Director of His Kids Children’s Ministries

Once again our precious children will participate at each service for Palm Sunday by singing songs to bless you and our Lord Jesus Christ! Preschool, including the Precious in His Sight Group (special needs), will practice the songs every Sunday leading up to Palm Sunday so that they will be ready.

A CD with this year’s songs is available in each preschool, 2-year-olds through Kindergarten, and Precious in His Sight rooms. The songs on the CD are played on guitar and led by Debbie Smith.

On the morning of Palm Sunday, it is important that your children be checked into their appropriate class room before the ministers take them to the Worship Center. Each service will start right on time: 8, 9:30, and 11:11 a.m. Thank you for helping to make this effort pleasant for everyone involved. The children do look forward to singing for “big” church and we hope you enjoy it too.

CIA (Christians in Action), representing the elementary grades, will come in with palm branches, singing a song from the J-Force production at all three services. They are practicing each Sunday after church for this special event and hope to bless you!

Worship Team Member SpotlightBy Jeff Taylor, Pastor of Teaching & Worship

Meet Nick Scholz. You will see him on stage regularly leading us into worship from electric guitar. Nick’s skill, personality, and heart for God make him such a blessing to have on the team. Be sure to introduce yourself and give him a high five!

Name: Nick Scholz

Role you play in the worship ministry: Guitar player.

Family info: I’ve got two younger brothers who are very supportive and loving, and two parents who have been an amazing blessing.

How long have you been on the worship team at LBF? Just over a year.

Why are you part of the worship ministry? I love to worship God and I love music. Seems only natural to put the two together and worship Him through music.

What are some of your favorites…? Food: Thai! Mexican! Veggie

burgers! Falafel! Chinese! Sandwiches! Pasta! Book: Anything Shakespeare…especially Hamlet, Macbeth, and Othello. The comedies are alright, but nothing is as satisfying as a good tragedy.

Movie: Anything Star Wars because I am a gigantic nerd. Song: Right now it’s “Here We Are Juggernaut” by Coheed and Cambria. Think Rush meets the Police meets Iron Maiden at a heavy metal show. Worship Song: I really dig Tim Hughes. Especially “Jesus Saves.” The best, though, is “Everything.” I could listen to that song all day. Band/Musician: Thrice. They are so good. Unbelievably good. Unreal-good, I would even say. Hobby: Guitar, reading, and…video games. Lots of video games.

What animal would you say your personality is best described as? A lion probably. Fierce and lazy? Sounds like me. Plus I’ve already got the mane going.

What is your earliest childhood memory? The carpet in our first house. It was a kind of zebra-brown-salt-and-pepper affair. Very distinct.

What is something that everyone should know about you? I am a vegetarian. That keeps things interesting.

What is one of your defining characteristics? Usually I am very quiet. I much prefer to listen and observe. I also take a while to think before I speak.

What is the thing in your life you would say is your greatest accomplishment? Graduating from college early, learning two foreign languages, getting a fantastic job as a teacher…I’ve had a pretty accomplished life!

When you are in front of large groups of people, a common thing for you to think is… Awesome! What am I trying to get these people to learn or understand?

What is something you still hope to accomplish in your life? See the world, man. I’ve been all over the U.S. and Europe, but I’d love to see Asia and South America. One of these days…

What is a talent you do not possess that you wish you did? I really wish I could sing. That would be so rad.

What is the best way for someone to encourage you? High fives. Those are the best.

What is a favorite quote or Bible verse that has impacted your life? I really like Ephesians 5:14, especially in the King James translation: “Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.” Remembering that I am a child of light, awoken from the dead and the sleeping to live out a life of light.

I also really like Galatians 5:24: “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.” That’s a good one to turn to when you’re feeling weak and overpowered.

“”

Usually I am very quiet. I much prefer to

listen and observe.

Summer Camps Challenge Youth to Be “All In”By Matt Sasso, Pastor of Student Ministries

This year’s theme is “All In,” which explores the lives of Saul and David, examining what it takes to be a person “after God’s own heart” regardless of the circumstances. Too often we selfishly seek approval, wisdom, and victory without first seeking the will of God. “All In” explores how David managed to be called a “man after God’s own heart” despite his human failings, and how Saul lost God’s blessings and succumbed to his pride, jealousy, and fear. Through this theme, we will learn to cultivate a passion to seek God, emulate His character, and strive to be men and women after God’s own heart.

Volunteers RequiredBy Matt Sasso, Pastor of Student Ministries

When you look at the beaming faces in Exit 83 Youth Ministry, you see far more than students. They discovered what you could soon recognize – our volunteers aren’t here to merely help. The relationships they form swiftly become their ministry and a treasured priority. In fact, leaders engage with the same students for the entire year – laughing, listening, and leading. You could become part of the reason that students love Exit 83!

Our mission is to lead students into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Our strategy is to create environments where students can...

Washing Up, Saving Up: Youth Fundraiser!By Matt Sasso, Pastor of Student Ministries

On Sunday, April 10, Exit 83 is having a carwash fundraiser here at LBF, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The goal is to help our students get to summer camp! We would love for you to consider helping us by giving a donation in return for a carwash by some of our amazing students.

For those of us who minister and lead these students on a weekly basis, we know the value that summer camp has in our relationships with them and how it can dramatically change their life. Imagine having an opportunity to do what is thought to be impossible? Leaders in youth ministry know that is the type of opportunity that summer camp gives – the opportunity to take students to a place where they can disconnect from their everyday lives and focus on Jesus. It is something that we should always value. In addition, the opportunity that this experience brings for leaders is that it helps them develop relationships in greater depth in a shorter amount of time. Whenever we return home, students are always more connected to the group and the leaders. Any youth leader knows this opportunity is priceless.

This month, I would like to ask you to consider supporting these students and making a very much-needed spiritual impact in their lives.

Reaching Out: LBF GlobalHow LBF connected with one of our missionary familiesBy Carol Hawkins, Missions Coordinator

I want you to meet a very special family that’s serving the Lord in the Holy Land. That’s right, LBF is supporting a ministry that’s in Israel. Daniel and his family are from Romania and they immigrated to northern Israel several years ago. Their story of how they got connected with LBF is one that only God could have arranged.

Back in 2001, a family in our church was contacted about hosting a Romanian family who were here in the area and needed housing. Their youngest daughter, Oana who was 6 at the time, was in need of a serious surgical procedure. A hospital in Southern California offered to perform the surgery, but this family would have to provide for their own housing. So for about three and a half months, this precious family attended LBF while their daughter received surgery and excellent follow-up treatment. Once Oana had recovered, the family moved back to their home in Romania, where Daniel was a pastor.

As a result of their time with us, LBF began giving some financial support to their ministry as a way of reaching out globally to Eastern Europe. Then several years ago their family immigrated to northern Israel where they have a wonderful ministry reaching out to other Romanian immigrants who do not know Christ. It’s excit-ing to get Daniel’s regular updates and hear how he openly shares the light of Christ in his community and sees hearts being changed as they truly hear and embrace the Gospel message. Daniel also helps in a Russian church while their pastor is away, coordinating evangelistic and youth meetings. The light of Jesus (Yeshua in Hebrew) is definitely shining through Daniel and his family.

Here’s a fun story about Daniel: He is taking a class in Jerusalem three days a week. He has to take the bus in order to take these courses, and it’s a bit of a journey for him to make. One of his classmates is a friend of mine who I met in ’93 when I was there on a short-term mission trip to Israel. It’s a great reminder of how God brings people together to encourage others.

Please pray for Daniel and his family as the Lord brings them to mind. His wife is Iuliana and his daughters are Adelina (18) and Oana (16). This whole family has immigrated from Romania, so there have been major adjustments for them to make in order to feel at home in Israel, including learning a new language. They appreciate your prayers.

Thank you for your part in this global ministry.

Prayer Request: Please be praying for some from LBF who will be going on short-term mission trips this summer. There are three college students as well as a team of men and women who are making plans now for ministry opportunities in Kenya, Asia, and the Dominican Republic. Your prayers for them as they raise support and make plans are vital.

A Christian College Education Can Be Worth It (Part II)You can download a PDF of last month’s Scroll at lbfchurch.com/resourcesBy Phil Shahbaz, Pastor of Community Life

Currently, the graduation rate for students who attend Chaffey College is 21%, 28% for Mt. SAC, 26% for Citrus College, and even worse for some of our local four-year universities. Believe it or not, the graduation rate at Cal State San Bernardino is 12%, Cal State Fullerton is 16%, and Cal Poly Pomona is 15%. Conversely, the graduation rates at some of our local private Christian schools are higher: Biola University is 51%, Azusa Pacific is 55%, and Westmont College is an amazing 73%.

The reason for the difference between these graduation rates parallel the center of my experience at Whitworth College: 1) My class sizes were small, my professors knew my name, they often came to my residence hall or invited me to their home to help me with my homework, and many of my former professors contact me to this day, just to see how I’m doing. 2) Everything I learned in the classroom was simultaneously measured against my faith in Jesus – faith and academic learning always walked hand-in-hand. 3) My counselors knew my name, spent time with me, and helped me find the major(s) that were right for me. 4) Because I lived on campus, I was involved in every facet of student life, from intramural sports to theatre, from student government to fishing trips. Living on campus put me squarely in the center of an entire community of students that was living, learning, and growing in our faith together. I had to learn how to get along with a roommate, I had to learn how to wake myself up in the morning, and I had to learn to make friends. With no family support from

home, we were eager to create friendships, study together, cook dinner together, and lean on one another in difficult times. We became more than friends, we became brothers and sisters that still support one another well into our 30s. 5) Chapel (three days a week). And 6) my grades went up because I understood that this experience cost money and had to be valued. My grades also went up because my new friendships meant so much to me, that I couldn’t bear to be kicked out due to poor grades.

If your son or daughter is currently out of high school and struggling with school, their faith, or their relationship with you, it is likely that they are missing many of the things I wrote about above. In summation, my Christian college experience gave me purpose, value, and direction, most of which were achieved outside of the classroom. I also learned to appreciate my parents in a profound way. Nothing makes you value your parents like being away from them for six months, especially mom’s cooking!

At this point, you may still be wondering how your child will afford this experience. It’s a valid question. My tuition at Whitworth College was $18,000 my first year, and increased 10-15% each additional year. Each

year, my parents were able to contribute about $4,000. I received about $4,000 in scholarship funds my first year, which increased each year as my grades and involvement in campus increased. And I received about $4,000 in work-study funds (work on campus in exchange for tuition). I left Spokane with close to $20,000 in student loans, but my undergraduate experience prepared me for graduate school so much so that I went on to receive a master’s degree on full scholarship. Upon receiving my master’s, I was able to land a professional job and pay off all of my loans in 13 months. Looking back, I was scared to take out those loans. I was foolish to not realize that a God who loves me probably thought, “$20,000? No problem.” After all, if I knew that the average college graduate earned $750,000 more over their lifetime then a non-grad, I would not have worried.

Was I smarter than your son or daughter when I was 19 years old? No way. Actually, I don’t consider myself to be smart at all. My brain actually moves very slow. The difference is that my heart got involved. If a person’s heart is involved, it’s difficult to slow them down. My Christian college experience got my heart involved and taught me how to keep it involved.

If your child is bringing up the idea of going to a Christian college, help them at least explore the possibility. If they are not, be sure to send them to Mosaic College Group in the Lower Garage at 7 p.m. on Thursday nights. I will do my best to give them the same kind of attention and affection my professors at Whitworth gave me.

“”

I had to learn how to get along with a roommate, I had to learn how to wake myself up in the morning, and I had to learn to make friends.

Identify With the Attitude of JesusBy Gary Keith, Executive & Teaching Pastor

Thursday, May 5 has once again been identified as the National Day of Prayer. The idea of an annual National Day of Prayer was introduced by the Rev. Billy Graham, who suggested it in the midst of a several-weeks crusade in the nation’s capitol. Members of the House and Senate introduced a joint resolution for an annual National Day of Prayer, “on which the people of the United States may turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals.”

In a 1983 declaration about the National Day of Prayer, Ronald Reagan said, “From General Washington’s struggle at Valley Forge to the present, this Nation has fervently sought and r eceived divine guidance as it pursued the course of history. This occasion provides our nation with an opportunity to further recognize the source of our blessings, and to seek His help for the challenges we face today and in the future.”

This year LBF is planning to provide a time of prayer on Thursday, May 5 in the Worship Center. This event will be organized by our Thursday night Intercessory Prayer Team. After meeting with two of the team members recently, I was challenged to look at this prayer time a little differently than in the past.

Traditionally we gather and pray for our politicians and other civic leaders. While that is a good thing, this year we desire to pray for them as one of the intercessory team members said, “with a love that is willing to humble self and enter into their condition.” We want to pray by connecting with them through a common point of identification. As we pray, we will consider their needs as we identify with the roles they have.

For example, as we pray for our governmental leaders, we realize that each of us is a leader in some capacity. And in that capacity we know the pressure and the responsibilities of being a leader. We know from our personal experience that leaders are attacked by others and that leaders receive their authority from God and are accountable to God. We also know that all of us have failed and require forgiveness and mercy from God to be a leader. So as we pray we will take some time to identify with these people and ask for the same things we would ask for ourselves.

My desire is that we don’t just have another event to go to, but a night of meaningful prayer that changes and empowers us, as well as makes a spiritual impact on our nation. I hope you plan to join us on Thursday, May 5 @ 7 p.m. in the Worship Center as we humble ourselves (Philippians 2:3-4) and pray for the needs of this nation.
