How did you get started in the insurance business?I began my career in May 1977 as an Agent in Frankfort, Kentucky with Commonwealth Life. Prior to becoming an Agent I had been working at the General Electric Corporation for about 3 years. When I got home from work one evening, my Commonwealth Agent was there to see me. I began talking about my job and I told him that I did not see much of a future at GE, and he suggested that I go to his office and talk to his District Manager, Woody Marcum. I did so and was very pleased with what I learned about this career from Woody and job sampling. Shortly thereafter, I began my career. I was promoted into management in 1980.
What tools are you using to obtain success?I found very early in my career as a young Sales Manager that recruiting was important. Now let me tell you the 3 secrets to success as a Manager: RECRUIT, RECRUIT, RECRUIT. Get Agency Coordinators involved daily, use social media, Sales Managers, Agents, Nominators, utilize job fairs—I can go on and on. The earlier as a manager you make recruiting your #1 priority, in every way possible, the faster you will set a steady pace of doing well.
What’s one of your biggest professional challenges?I guess my biggest challenge has been balancing the “personal” phone call or face to face contact with the many technological advances we enjoy today. While texting and emailing are time saving and economical, I still like talking to people when possible. However, I am grateful for the new technology.
What is one of your personal goals for this year?Some of my personal goals this year for me and my team are to qualify for the Circle of Excellence Award, Pinnacle Level Leaders Conference, appoint a Senior Producer that will compliment my district and grow the Corbin career agency by 10%.
What advice would you give a rookie Agent?I would like to share some information and give some free advise to those early into their careers with Transamerica, the rookies. While at a GAMA meeting not long ago, a speaker stated that the average age in our industry is age 57; I would think it’s about the same with us at Transamerica. This means that in the near future there will be more opportunities than “ever” before. My advice is work hard, learn our business and position yourselves for those opportunities because the best is yet to come.
