President’s Report… Bruce Lethborg
Hi Guys, April and the Easter bunny has been and gone, hope you didn’t eat too much chocolate. Holden Ford Sprint Winton Since last magazine we have had our first sprint for Holden Ford series at Winton. It was great to see the debut of three new cars from our members. Greg Kastelic and Alan Davies gave their XE Falcon’s a good shakedown before heading to Bathurst and Peter Hillman ran his Skyline. There were around 45 entries and the day was perfect, clear skies and low 20s. The day ran well with plenty of runs. The only whinge I have is that one member came up to help, thanks Pete. Our events can’t run without helpers and without events there is no income which means eventually there will be no club. We still have a
several events to run this year… if you aren’t running in an event PLEASE help.
I had my first mechanical failure in three years at Winton. I happened to look at the temp gauge just as the temp skyrocketed. Back in the pits after an inspection to find out why it got hot, I could see a coolant trace between the head and block on the right bank. Thinking I had blown a head gasket, I loaded the car and headed home. The next day I filled the cooling system and pressure tested it and found coolant belching out at the back of the inlet manifold out of a split blanking plug on the heater hose outlet pipe. I have now changed both blanking plugs and the engine appears to be OK. Good Friday Appeal As we do every year, the club made a donation to the Good Friday Appeal for the Children’s Hospital. The funds come from the fines tin and are made up to $100 if it hasn’t already exceeded that amount. This year it was $100. Bathurst festival of motorsport Several of our members travelled to Bathurst to take part in the regularity trial over the Easter break. There were mixed results ranging from doing two laps in total for the whole weekend to completing each race. Wayne Paola has posted several in car videos on YouTube that are worth watching, you can also check out Wayne’s in car commentary in some of his videos. I reckon we may see Wayne as a commentator on the V8 supercar telecasts soon. (an article on this weekend is in this edition...Ed) Dyno Day This year is Dyno year. Mark Kakouri has volunteered his dyno and we are just waiting for Mark to confirm a date for later this year. Stay tuned. 40th Celebration Not much to report. Invitations will need to be sent out soon and we are working on a timetable for the day, catering etc. We have only just realised that the event is on the same day as V8s at Winton, so the likelihood of getting any V8 drivers is nil. There have been several suggestions for some Holden “legends”, so we will work at that angle. Keep it on the black stuff Cheers Bruce

Vice-President’s Report… Frank Rogan Hi Folks, As you a probably aware now, the Group 5 Motorkhana that Holden Sporting Car Club was running under Tamara’s direction was postponed on March 4 due to inclement weather. The Formula 1 GP held at Albert Park did run and is done for another year, a Holden Ford sprint round at Winton is now behind us as well. Some of our lads have now got great stories to tell of their time at Mt Panorama, (see article in this edition...Ed) and Easter has been and gone as well. By the time you read this Deniliquin will be all over including the shouting too…but a great weekend if you did manage to get up there. There’s a bunch of 2 day events in the next handful of weeks…a sprint round at the Island on the 21st and 22nd of April, but it’s not just a common event, it is the first round of the Victorian State Circuit Racing Championship. Also coming up there’s a driver training/motorkhana weekend scheduled for the 28th & 29th of April, supposedly at Werribee but with a likely venue change. Keep your eyes peeled for Supp Regs. Then there’s another sprint weekend at Phillip Island on 5th & 6th May, and then the one we are running in conjunction with FFCC is a Sandown weekend on 9th and 10th of June. This 9th/10th June event is a combination of a club subsidized driver training day on the Saturday followed by a proper sprint day on the Sunday. Yes, some of the cost of the Saturday entry is being picked up by the club just like we did two years ago when we ran the last driver training day. It’s a come and try fun day, available to our members with a L2S licence or without a licence but with a L2S licensed passenger (or higher) providing instruction to that driver. CAMS’ recent amendments regarding licensing has made this very straightforward for us as a club. On the motorkhana front, Mini club has a VMC on 13th May at Pakenham, and HAC is running a Group 5 khana on 27th May at Avalon. It’s also getting closer to our big 40th anniversary in August and we have to knuckle down and fill in the finer details very soon. This is also a free day for members of our club to play on the majestic track that is Sandown, and it’s a similar situation to the driver training day on the Saturday 9th June with regard to licensing. August 26 is the date for our special event, and despite what you may have read or heard elsewhere, this day is set aside in the calendar and is purely for our 40th. It is not a round of the Group 5 series, nor is it a round of the Victorian State Racing Series! This error seems like it has come from PIARC, they have been notified. I’ve got no pictures this month, and would have liked to take a photo of this as it’s for real…but I’ll share it with you anyway. I saw a bloke in a Hilux with something odd perched on his passenger seat on the Monash Freeway. It looked like a well groomed chocolate brown deer but because of his tinted windows I wasn’t sure. His driver’s side one was down so when I was on that side of him I wound my window down and yelled out to him that I thought it was his girlfriend. He yelled back to me that she didn’t look that good. At the time there was a truck sailing up behind the vehicle so there was no time for a picture.
See you sideways or at the meeting. Frank.

I have decided to include mail collected at the committee meeting as it otherwise goes unreported. Incoming Mail April 2012 collected
An extra Club Seal is needed so that I can facilitate people’s CH plate requests at general meetings so I will see about purchasing one with the new club logo on it if possible. I hope that the people who went to Bathurst enjoyed themselves as my own Bathurst plans take shape for October. 180 XU1s including race cars have entered for the event... it should be fun. I’ve included an old photo of yet another Holden beating a Ford. (Beechey leading Jane’s Mustang Calder 1968 I think...Ed)

Stats for March show 2,877 visits. Most visited pages after the ‘Home’ page was the ‘Calendar’
followed by ‘Club Cars’. Ian’s yellow VK was the most popular ‘Club Car’ details page, followed
by Wayne’s VK and then Vlad’s VH.
There have been a few changes to the Calendar. Winton pics will be on the website soon, on the
‘Ford V Holden’ series page and Bathurst pics will be added to the ‘Members at Play’ page when
available.
‘Club Cars’ has had a few changes, some non members have been removed and some new cars
should be added by the time you read this.
I’ve been unable to contact Mecomm so we are now paying for the website. As they are no longer
sponsoring the website, they’ll be removed as a sponsor of the club. Two payments are due, one for
website hosting (which has been paid) and another for domain name registration (due in May).

Motorsport… Peter Scott
Hello all and yes, it’s April already. First an apology. I haven’t been up to speed (pun intended I guess...Ed) on any of our events lately as I have had problems with my computer. Technology is a good thing but can be frustrating when: 1) It doesn’t work, and 2) the “professional” called upon to fix said computer is very vague about what the problem actually is, how much it will cost to fix, and when can I have the damn thing back? ...All sorted now. Some of our members made the pilgrimage over Easter to the Mecca of Motorsport in Oz. I refer of course, to Mount Panorama at Bathurst. While some had been there before, it was the first time on the mountain for others. There will be a report later in this magazine. (Page 15...Ed) There is not a lot happening on our club calendar in April, although the Autocross/Motorkhana event at Deniliquin is running as this is being written. More on that next month. So what has been happening? I have been quietly working away preparing my little rocket for its motorsport debut. I have a 1985 Suzuki Hatch that was free to good home a couple of years ago, but moving house and work commitments meant that it was stored away for a while. I got it out and took it to work last year with the plan that I could work on it after hours and weekends and isn’t a hoist just a useful thing! The car is a 543cc, 3 cylinder, 4 speed manual that came from the factory with 10” wheels, drum brakes all round and an earth shaking 22hp! It weighs just 580kg in standard form, so it can actually move under its own power to a top speed of 122km/h downhill with a tail wind, with the aero package of a brick. It was in a bit of a sad state when I got to start on it, it had rust in the driver’s door pillar which meant that the door fell off when opened, the seats were stuffed, the battery was dead as it had sat for nearly 4 years, and the fuel was how old? Still, it was all there and basically straight, and looked a whole lot better after a wash. Fast forward about 6 months. The door pillar is repaired and the door refitted. Seats have been replaced with standard items from a Suzuki Swift. Driveshaft boots have all been replaced. Good battery found and fitted. Rear springs rebushed. Fuel tank cleaned out and refilled with fresh fuel. Engine bay pressure washed and engine serviced and tuned. ...cont’d
— TORQUE the Holden Club magazine ——————————————— Apr 2012 page 14
Motorsport… Peter Scott
...cont’d Steering wheel replaced with sports wheel found at wreckers for $15. Front brakes replaced with
Suzuki Swift vented discs/calipers.
10” wheels replaced with Swift 13” wheels and rear drums restudded to suit. Present day: After all this, the beast now starts first kick, runs like a
watch, is clean and tidy and almost roadworthy. It’s the perfect start
to juniors who want to get into motorkhana as it’s light, low powered,
easy to drive, got good brakes and the whole lot has only cost around
$300.00 at this point.
As I am on holidays at the moment, the plan is to finish the last few bits and pieces over the coming week and get it ready to go. Coming soon to a track/motorkhana field near you! Have fun and keep the shiny side up
Pete.

Bathurst
(from the back of the field)
After months of preparation it was finally time to hit the road. I caught up with the gang at Cootamundra, where we continued on to Bathurst the next morning. Finally at Bathurst, some setting up, paperwork and then scrutineering. We all got through ok, but Darren nearly failed for not having socks ! (lesson - don’t go to scrutineering in thongs). The next day, the drivers briefing and then a practice session. The moment finally arrived, on the dummy grid, engines idling, ready to go. Out of pit lane and up Mountain Straight for the warm up lap then around Griffins Bend, not too bad, then the Cutting, hmm blind corner, wow very steep, next corner also blind, how the hell do you race here when you can’t even see around the next corner. The road opens up a bit across the top, so I tried too keep up with the group, some more throttle, then you come up to Skyline, accelerating up hill and all you can see is blue sky over the crest, umm, what do you do next? can’t even see where the road goes, on the brakes early to figure it out. Ok, steep downhill, esses, more blind corners and BIG concrete barriers all around you. With a steep downhill, this was dangerous. Like many have said before, I can’t believe people race here. The heart was thumping double pace and I think I forgot to breathe. Then Forrest’s Elbow, on the brakes very early, this corner just looks like trouble, all I could think of was slamming into the wall. Finally got to Conrod Straight and started to breath again but I think I was in a state of shock. I couldn’t believe what just happened, and this is the warm up lap. I was scared... do I keep going or pull out? As we crossed the finished line, it was now race speed (or any speed you like). I figured I’ll try again but take it easy and stay at the back of the pack and go at my own pace. Again over the mountain, but by now the lead cars were all over me. Scared got upgraded to ‘frightening’, not only are the corners blind in front but also behind you. One second there is no one behind, the next there’s someone on the rear bumper, how can you concentrate on the front when there’s danger also behind. This is insane, I shouldn’t be here. Somehow I survived the practice session, so back to our camp site. Most of the guys were doing hi 5’s and very happy. Mark unfortunately broke a (rear axle) drive plate and that was it for the weekend. The other newbie's in Greg K and Alan, like myself were standing around with blank expres-sions on our faces thinking ‘what the hell are we doing here’. We did similar times, embarrassing slow. We didn’t speak much for the rest of the day. The next day Saturday, we got ready for our session. We were assured that as we learn the track and our confidence grows, our times will drop quickly. On the way to the dummy grid, I put my foot on the brakes but the car wouldn’t stop. The brake booster had failed. After stopping the car and a few minutes of silence I decided not to give up but to learn to drive with minimum braking. After starting from the back of the pack, it was a cautious drive over the mountain as the car was very difficult to pull up, but working the gears hard, I made it. Back on pit straight I was greeted with a black flag. I look around, I’m the only car on pit straight... bugger must of got black flagged for being too slow, so back to the camp site. ...cont’d
— TORQUE the Holden Club magazine ——————————————— Apr 2012 page 16
When the other guys came in, again it was all smiles and Hi 5’s, most with pb’s. Alan improved by 15 seconds and Greg K by 20 seconds... a terrific effort. Although I was disappointed, I had learnt the black flag wasn’t for me so I looked forward to the next session. The next session saw most of our times improve even mine by 1 second. Although still very cautious with braking, I knew I could do better. Last day Sunday morning, off to the dummy grid and out to the track again. I was starting to relax a bit but still had trouble concentrating due to cars lapping me. One thing I did enjoy was driving up pit straight to be greeted by the crowds in the Grand Stands. The event was open to the public and about 10,000 spectators came through the gates over the weekend. After clearing pit straight and powering up mountain straight, I couldn’t see any cars in the mirrors. Still had a car in front, so race must still be going. With no one behind, lets go ! Nothing special, just focus and concentrate, smooth lines, good gear changes, and cautious braking. The smile started to grow and with a clean run over the mountain I started to shake again but this time from excitement. Finally on to Conrod Straight, foot to the floor and through the gears. Normally I’d back off over the hump but not this time. Quick glance at the speedo, 220 (felt like Warp 10), ease off for the Chase and concentrate for the last tricky part of the circuit, no problems. Into Murray’s Corner and power up pit straight. That was the greatest drive of my life... at Bathurst in a Monaro, and a pb by 5 seconds (3:21). I know it sounds odd, but I was so excited I decided not to go out again and ended the weekend on a high note. The reality of Bathurst is that it’s a dangerous track, that’s what makes it so rewarding when you get it right. There were quite a few damaged cars over the weekend and as we waited for the last session (of our group), there was a serious accident on the mountain. The driver was air lifted to hospital; fortunately he was stable the next day. Thanks to all for making this the best motorsport event I’ve ever experienced, and special thanks to Ray for helping out, Julie for taking photos, Cameron for the video (and saving dinner on the last night)… Alex

Club Membership and Points score….
Membership We are still receiving renewals and I am getting quite a few enquiries and many of them are joining. This is great, there is a mix of email and phone enquiries which shows that the website is working well for us. CH plates I am working on the constitution, i.e. what has to be deleted and what has to be added to bring the constitution up to date with the new permit system. ( refer to last month’s mag ...for what has
been proposed with respect to membership and CH plates, both of which require a change to the club’s Constitution...Ed))
cheers Bruce

This month… back to things Motorsport... identify this famous racing Holden.
Better still ...name its well known driver who was also a Bathurst winner but hint ...not in this vehicle. And for the Ultimate Points Award!...name the device front RH side of engine in this pic.
Last month’s Quiz answer…..
the photo is of ...a VN Commodore, one fitted
with a Family Two 4 cylinder engine (made in Melbourne in the Holden engine plant). This particular 4 cylinder Commodore model was marketed as the ‘Commodore Royale’. It was never sold in Australia...only exported to NZ and SE Asia.
