CLEAN GREEN Spring has sprung, and in celebration of Earth Day we urge you to think green when spring cleaning. Don’t rely on labels that say Natural; that doesn’t always equal non-toxic. Instead, look for Certified Biodegradable, Designed for the Environment, Green Guard, and Green Seal – they pose less harm to humans and their claims have been verified by an independent certifier.

How much energy would you exert to conquer cancer? For anyone who’s been touched by this insidious disease, the answer is, without a doubt, as much energy as it takes. On Sunday, May 5, anyone who wants to join the fight can suit up for the first The Ride to Conquer Cancer. The event is hosted by the Cancer Center Partnership between the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, The West Clinic, and Methodist Healthcare. The goal of the Ride is to appeal to anyone who wants to help regional cancer patients fight their battles with one of the nation’s leading killers and expand top-level cancer research in the region.

The 3.5 mile looped bike course begins at The West Clinic on Humphreys Boulevard. Riders will travel east to Kirby Road and circle back to The West Clinic at the start/finish area. Cyclists will have three hours to complete the loop, either riding leisurely or racing competitively. Both individuals and teams will receive awards for the most completed and fastest laps for various categories, enhancing the challenge for cyclists of any level.

“The success of our new partnership with Methodist Healthcare and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center has been amazing,” said Lee S. Schwartzberg, MD, Medical Director of The West Clinic. “This one-of-a-kind cancer collaborative is rapidly moving forward with the development of a regional comprehensive cancer center.”

All funds raised will support the Comprehensive Cancer Center – a partnership of The West Clinic, Methodist Healthcare, and University of Tennessee Health Science Center – in order to underwrite cancer research projects, initiate startup grants, and recruit and support top scientific minds whose work will lead to new cures.

The Conquer Cancer Ride promises a wonderful cycling experience for all, including cancer survivors, friends and family members of those enduring cancer treatment, the riding novice, and elite racers alike. Participants can register online at www.ridetoconquercancer.racesonline.com or by mail (instructions can be found online.) There will be a Cinco de Mayo-themed

celebration at the end of the Ride that will include Mariachi music, food provided by Swanky’s, and various children’s activities.

For more information visit www.ridetoconquercancer.racesonline.com or call Deborah Coble, Director of Corporate Communication at The West Clinic at 901.683.0055 ext. 1312.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer at sometime during their lives, and the stage at which breast cancer is detected impacts that woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 97%.

Methodist Germantown Breast Center is the first center in Memphis to offer 3-D breast tomosynthesis (DBT). This sort of 3-D mammography offers incredibly sharp images of the breast in order to help doctors more effectively pinpoint the size, shape, and location of any abnormality that may be present during breast cancer diagnostic exams.

Linda Hodgkiss M.D., Medical Director for the Methodist Germantown Breast Center and radiologist with Memphis Radiological Professional Corporation explains, “Tomosynthesis is an exciting, revolutionary technology that gives us the ability to scroll through each slice or layer of tissue to see what it really looks like. This allows for better tissue characterization, improved tumor visualization, and higher diagnostic accuracy. 3-D tomosynthesis gives us the ability to see things, particularly in dense breast tissue, that we could not see before. Additionally, it gives us the ability to better detect smaller cancers. The ability to see more clearly and identify smaller cancers directly translates into finding cancer in its earlier stages when the disease is more curable.”

Breast tomosynthesis offers a significant advantage over digital mammography in that it gives radiologists the ability to identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue. Radiologists at the Methodist Germantown Breast Center say the 3-D images captured with digital breast tomosynthesis reveal much more detail, which will help them detect cancer sooner and therefore decrease the need for biopsies.

The Methodist Germantown Breast Center staff works with the highly trained specialists at Memphis Radiological, PC, and partners with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and The West Clinic to bring cutting-edge resources together to treat patients more effectively.

It’s amazing how much disruption a tiny spot can cause in life. But with 3-D Diagnostic Mammography, doctors can see a more complete, three-dimensional picture of the breast tissue, allowing them to more accurately identify even the smallest abnormalities for a quicker diagnosis. It’s not only technology that can save your life. It is peace of mind that can help move your life forward faster. Just another way Methodist treats you better.

In Memphis, 3-D Diagnostic Mammography is only available at the Methodist Germantown Breast Center, where the staff works with the highly trained specialists at Memphis Radiological, PC, and with our partners at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center and The West Clinic to bring cutting-edge resources together to treat you better.

The Tennessee Food Policy Council: Working Towards a Healthier TennesseeTennessee faces enormous health challenges, many related to improper nutrition. A staggering 70% of its adults are classified as overweight or obese, as are 47% of its youth. Contributing to this disturbing trend is the fact that 78% of adults eat less than the recommended five fruits and vegetables a day.

With this in mind, the Tennessee Clean Water Network has expanded to create the Tennessee Food Policy Council in order to protect the rights of Tennesseans to clean water and wholesome foods. After all, a clean food system, like clean water, is essential to creating healthy and sustainable communities.

Overcoming the health challenges in Tennessee is directly linked to changing its mode of food production and distribution. Most farms within the state have traditionally produced “commodities” such as cattle, cotton, and soybeans, while fruits and vegetables remain categorized as “specialty crops.” Although these specialty crops are vital for community health, they do not always provide the same financial incentives for farmers to grow as commodities. As a result,

Tennessee’s agricultural structure is unable to meet the growing demand for local fruits and vegetables.

The Tennessee Food Policy Council plans to overcome these obstacles to good nutrition and health by serving as a resource to policy makers and the public, and aid in the advancement of laws and regulations aimed at the creation of a fair and just food system. Through a combination of state-level advocacy, education, and partnerships with local committees, the Tennessee Food Policy Council is poised to become a powerful force in shaping the way we eat.

The festival features a wide range of activities, including activities for kids – from eco-friendly arts and crafts in the Evergreen Packaging Eco Depot to exciting outdoor play in the AutoZone Adventure Zone. While you’re going green at the Down to Earth Festival, don’t forget to bring some green to spend with local vendors, artisans, and food trucks. Admission is free; parking is a $5.00 suggested donation.

The Earth Day 5K at Shelby Farms Park is the grand finale of Earth Week, presented by FedEx on Sunday, April 21st. Runners are encouraged to wear their most creative

eco-themed costumes as they run the race that runs Shelby Farms Park. Eco-friendly trophies will be awarded to winning runners in each category as well as prizes for best costumes. All runners will receive a sapling to take home or plant at the Park in a post-race community tree planting. Pre-registration is $25.00. Registration the day of the race is $30.00.

Fresh from a two month spiritual pilgrimage to India, Sadhu Serves is returning to the Mid-South to share his experiences. This Miami-based yoga teacher taught in Memphis for the first time in December 2012. He is honored and humbled to return this spring for three days of Kundalini yoga workshops, each and every one suitable for yogis of every level. Be assured that your experience level does not matter and everyone is welcome – yoga means union.

Sadhu has inspired countless people to excel in their health and spiritual well-being through the life-changing power and lifestyle of regular Kundalini Yoga practice. He received his name directly from Yogi Bhajan, master of Kundalini Yoga, while studying yoga in India. In addition to extensive travel throughout America, Europe, India, Thailand, and Tibet, he has been studying and teaching better breathing, meditation, and Kundalini Yoga since 1997. He has also had the privilege of studying with many great spiritual teachers, including Yogi Bhajan, the Dalai Lama, and Deepak Chopra.

Powerful results from Kundalini Yoga are often experienced immediately. Even as little as one to two sessions a week can profoundly heal and strengthen the body, balance the emotions, clear the mind, and bring deep spiritual insight.

This exciting weekend of yoga begins Friday evening, April 19th, at Shady Grove Presbyterian Church, located at 5530 Shady Grove Road in East Memphis. The Introduction to Kundalini Yoga: Living Your Highest Potential and How Simple It Really Is begins at 6:00 p.m. and lasts until 9:00 p.m. The cost is $35.00 per person.

You will have the chance to further your Kundalini journey with Sadhu Serves on Saturday, April 20th at Shady Grove Presbyterian beginning at 10:00 a.m. and continuing until 3:00 p.m. This workshop, Stability, Creativity & Destiny: Building the Lower Triangle to Manifest Your Greatest Potential, is intended to prove that, when consciously managed and healthy, the lower triangle is the ongoing flow of our

ability to stay on track, tap effortlessly into our creative potential, and manifest the resources and environments which support our greatest health and highest destiny. The cost is $45.00 per person.

On Sunday, April 21st, Sadhu moves to One CommUnity Center at 2924 Walnut Grove Road in Midtown Memphis for a Sadhana Workshop beginning at 5:30 a.m. and ending at 11:30 a.m. He will lead and explain the Kundalini Yoga Aquarian Morning Sadhana, which is practiced by thousands of people all over the world. The cost is $35.00 per person.

Fred T. Grogan, M.D.

by Adam Risinger, PT, OCS, Cert. MDT Regional Education Coordinator

About 25% of the people living in the Mid-South suffer from allergy symptoms during the spring and fall, including itchy eyes, stuffy noses, sneezing, sinus drainage, headaches, and coughs. This can be explained by the fact that Shelby County has been identified as one of the regions with the highest pollen counts in the entire country.

The Mid-South is highly exposed to airborne plant pollens, mold, and mold spores, aggravated by frequently damp weather, while the lack of mountainous areas or large bodies of water allows for their widespread distribution. Various airflows, the jet stream, and other climate changes all add to the problem.

Generally, the pollen count begins to increase during February of each year and continues to rise until late October or November. Trees and very large plants produce the most potent forms of pollen in the spring and the fall, while grass and small weeds produce lower counts from late May to mid-August. These lower counts can still cause discomfort, however.

The major allergy offender in the Mid-South during spring is oak pollen, generally during the month of April, although elm, cedar, cottonwood, and birch are also culprits. It’s not uncommon to see yellow-green dust coating cars and other surfaces during this time, meaning the pollen count is in the 2000-4000 range!

Treatment for pollen and mold allergies can be as simple as avoidance of some of the outside air and the use of over-the-counter antihistamines. More complex symptoms may require multiple approaches, however, such as the direct use of eye and nose care

products, several oral medications, and even immunotherapy from an allergy specialist.

Dr. Fred T. Grogan is a board-certified pediatric medicine and allergy and immunology physician with Allergy and Asthma Care. For a consultation, call 901.757.6100 or visit their website at www.allergymemphis.com.

I RECENTLY INCREASED MY TRAINING IN PREPARATION FOR A MARATHON IN APRIL AND I’M GETTING HEEL PAIN. WHAT HAS CAUSED THIS AND WHAT SHOULD I DO? Heel pain is typically caused by irritation of the plantar fascia, which is the thick ligament that runs from the heel along the arch of the foot. This can get inflamed with overtraining, changes in footwear, or poor foot biomechanics - either an extremely high arch or a very flat foot - this causes poor shock absorption and increased stress on this ligament. The technical term is plantar fasciitis.

We need to look at your running form and foot biomechanics to make sure you are in the right type of footwear. We would also trial taping of your foot and arch for symptom relief and as a way of assessing if different

shoes would help. We will also use “hands-on” techniques (massage, mobilization) to relieve stiffness and spasm. If your symptoms settle quickly we will hopefully be able to keep your training the same, if not we may need to modify the amount of activity you are doing, until symptoms improve. Stretches for the plantar fascia and calf muscles can also be part of the solution.

I AM GETTING A CATCHING PAIN ON THE OUTSIDE OF MY HIP WHEN I GET IN AND OUT OF THE CAR, AND IT IS STARTING TO ACHE WHEN I LAY ON IT. WHAT IS THIS? I AM CONCERNED I AM GETTING ARTHRITIS. If the pain is on the outside of the hip it is unlikely to be arthritis-hip arthritis normally causes pain or aching in the groin or down the front/inside of the leg.

Pain on the outside of the hip is typically hip bursitis. We see this condition in runners and triathletes, but also in people who are spending large parts of the day sitting. These activities weaken or switch the gluteal muscles off, resulting in a loss of hip control and rubbing of the bursa against the hip bone. Tightness in the hip flexors also contributes. A program of exercises that strengthens the weak gluteal muscles and stretches tight hip muscles is part

of the solution. Occasionally outside hip pain can be referred from the low back. Good physical therapy can assess that for you and determine whether it is bursitis or a low back issue.

MY SON HAS KNEE PAIN BUT HAS HAD NO INJURY. HIS PEDIATRICIAN TOLD US IT IS “GROWING PAINS AND IT WILL GO AWAY WITH AGE. HE IS 15 AND THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR 12 MONTHS. WHAT SHOULD WE DO? Knee Pain at this age is typically from stress on the ligaments and tendons at the knee as a result of a period of rapid growth. This rapid growth sees the bones outgrow the muscles and hence place a stress on different structures.

These symptoms can often be completely relieved or significantly reduced with good physical therapy intervention. Strengthening exercises will help offset some of these growing changes. Ice and strapping/bracing may help decrease some of the inflammation and allow your son to continue with activity with much less pain.

Justin Hamm was diagnosed with VATCTERL Association, also known as VATER Syndrome, at birth. VATCTERL Association is a rare disorder which affects the body’s organs and limbs, including the heart, spine, esophagus, intestines, kidneys, arms, and legs. With an estimated incidence rate of 16 cases per 100,000 live births, there is still no known cause of this cluster of complications, and doctors can only treat its symptoms with corrective surgery.

As an infant, Justin underwent 18 surgeries to repair major defects in many of his internal organs. Not only was he born with a heart the size of a grown man’s, it had a hole in it, and its main artery was located on the wrong side. Justin also had two stomachs, one kidney that wasn’t fully formed, and another that didn’t function at all. His prognosis was grim, and his family was told that his chances for survival, if he made it through the surgeries, were slim past the age of four. Making it to the age of 18 was nearly unthinkable. They were also informed that he would never play any organized sports and instructed to restrict his physical activity.

Justin had a checkup every six months until his 13th birthday, and at each appointment, doctors would tell him that he was a miracle. At 15, however, Justin went against doctors’ orders and decided to go out for the basketball team, believing that since his heart was a muscle, working out would make him healthier. Through support from his family and motivation to prove to everyone that he could, in fact, be like everyone else, Justin did thrive. He recalls that overcoming the physical and emotional stress was hard to do, especially in the beginning, but now believes that God gave him these obstacles to overcome in order to make him stronger, and lives by the Bible verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13.)”

At 18, Justin began power lifting. He now competes in both Memphis and Pickwick and currently holds eight records in Tennessee. He recently began bodybuilding, competing in two shows, placing 2nd in both and qualifying for the USA Nationals.

“Doctors used to tell me that there was no medical reason that I should be alive. Needless to say, through God, supportive family, and friends who believed in me, I’m still here today.” He goes on to mention many of the people who helped him along the way – Mr. Gray, who was there at the hospital, helped him to get his learners’ permit, and taught him that “anything is possible;” Joe Merrel, who took him in as a 17-year old and taught him that if you want something, take it; Mike Lance, who sponsored him and attended his first bodybuilding show, showed him how to be a dad, fix a truck, run a business, and better himself; Bryant Jernigan and Greg Stacks, who have given him advice and support, and motivated him to push himself; and finally, a nurse at LeBonheur whom Justin knew only as Toby, and who saved Justin’s life on two occasions.

Now 26, Justin is currently a Manager and Trainer at Edge Fitness in Southaven, Mississippi. He chose training as a career as a way of giving back. “Also, I want to prove to everyone, especially to kids, that they can do anything with the drive, the heart, and the want to.”

What woman doesn’t want naturally beautiful, glowing skin? Unfortunately, most of us fall victim to flashy, clever skin care advertisements and end up purchasing chemical- laden, synthetic beauty products, actually causing more harm than good.

So what is the big deal about chemicals in skin care, anyway? Because your skin is your largest organ, about 60% of what you apply to the surface will go directly into your blood stream, tissues, and organs. Many of the common chemicals in skin care have not been thoroughly tested for safety and some studies show that these chemicals can mimic our natural hormones, aggravate our nervous systems, and impair our organs, causing many unwanted side effects. Also, when we apply chemicals to the skin, like every other organ, it has to work harder to detoxify itself, robbing it of its ability to naturally rejuvenate. Consider “green cleaning” your skin care. Check out these chemical offenders and be sure to read the label before applying a product to your skin.

CHEMICALS TO AVOID: Dyes and Fragrances, Triclosan, Parabens, Phthalates, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS,) Polyethylene Glycol (PEG,) Talc, Benzyl Alcohol, Alcohol SD-40, Silicone, Dimethicone, and Mineral Oil.

Now that you know what to avoid, what are nature’s best skin healers? Look for the following ingredients that feed the skin healing botanicals, rather than mask it with chemicals.

BOTANICALS TO USE: Rich omega oils feed the skin rather then mask it. The same way fat can make our bottoms plump, it can also plump up the natural layer of fat under the skin, giving us a youthful appearance. Organic jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, and argan oil are excellent for the face, neck, and body.

Aloe vera gel is a super-rich moisturizer and a natural antibacterial. The best moisturizers use aloe vera as their base, not water like most chemical skin care products. You are getting your money’s worth if this or an organic oil are listed as your product’s first ingredient.

Herbs and essences like chamomile, lavender, citrus oils, tea tree oil, and other essential oils are excellent for renewing and detoxifying.

Beauty does not have to be expensive – read the labels and choose organic and natural ingredients that heal the skin, rather than cover it in chemicals. Natural beauty can be effortless, effective, and ageless when you choose nature’s timeless healing botanicals.

TAYLOR ANN DEMPSEYAGE: 13

GRADE: 7th grade

SCHOOL: Arlington Middle School

WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN? I am currently involved in National Junior Honor Society, Beta Club, Builders Club, Leadership Club, Christ Living in Christian Kids Club (CLICK,) and Arlington Middle School Cheer, which is a competitive team.

ARE YOU COMPETITIVE IN NATURE? I am competitive in just about everything I am involved in. I strive to give 100% and do my best. Even when my cheer team is not competing or when the season is over, I still go to tumbling lessons and stretch every day.

HOW DOES YOUR FAMILY SUPPORT YOU IN LEADING AN ATHLETIC LIFESTYLE? My mom drives me to cheer practice and tumbling lessons and both of my parents enjoy watching and playing sports. We like to take bike rides as a family or go hiking in the neighborhood fields with our dog.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO CHEER? When I was younger my brother’s girlfriend was a cheerleader and now she cheers for the University of Arkansas. I wanted to be a cheerleader after watching how much fun she has.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE SCHOOL, FUN, AND SPORTS? Being on a schedule has helped me stay balanced with my schoolwork, cheer, family, and friends. I know during competition time I have to come home and get my school work done first, then go to practice. I’m usually asleep by 9 p.m. every night, and since school doesn’t start for me until 9 a.m. I get enough sleep each night and wake up ready for the next day.

WHO IS SOMEONE YOU LOOK UP TO? My brother is a U.S. Marine and fitness is important to him. I look up to him because he has been physically fit for a long time.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? In my spare time I enjoy being with my friends, shopping, jumping on our trampoline, and traveling.

DO YOU HAVE ANY WORDS YOU LIVE BY OR A FAVORITE QUOTE? “Do what you love and love what you do.”

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE FOODS? A protein smoothie and bacon for breakfast, steak and baked potatoes for dinner, and I like to eat protein foods along with lots of fruits. Apples and peanut butter or strawberries with Nutella are my favorite snacks. My splurge foods are chocolate and ice cream.

ARE THERE ANY FOODS THAT YOU STAY AWAY FROM? I have never tasted a soda in my life. When I was younger, my parents told me they would stain my teeth; then when I got older and read how bad they are for you I made the choice to never drink sodas.

COMMIT TO BE FIT Taylor Dempsey’s outlook on life is inspiring to anyone who shares her commitment to an active and healthy lifestyle. Through family support and outstanding mentors, Taylor learned at an early age that having discipline and devotion in all you do will pay off in the end. Taylor began cheerleading two years ago and has been able to balance straight A’s with a healthy personal life as well as playing a role in getting her competitive team to the National Cheerleading Competition.

“Do you have any problems with your feet?”

“Well, not really.”

Long pause.

“I mean, I’ve lost a few toenails, one is turning black. And sometimes my toes go numb. But that’s about it.”

This is a conversation that we often have in Fleet Feet Sports. But did you know that most of these issues can be avoided just by finding the proper fit in a running shoe? A common misconception among runners and walkers is that tightness equals support. But in the running world, shoes that are too small or too snug can lead to many issues, including numbness in the toes, burning in the balls of the feet, or even the occasional missing toenail. Improper shoe sizing and shape are the primary cause of ingrown toenails, bunions, corns, and hammer toes. And shoes that don’t fit properly can also lead to muscular imbalance which can ultimately lead to a number of injuries.

When was the last time you had your feet measured? It may have been back at Buster Brown’s or Jackson’s Shoes as a kid. So when purchasing athletic shoes, make sure to have your feet professionally measured to ensure proper sizing and fit.

PERSONAL FITNESS BEGINS WITH A PERSONAL FIT HOW SHOULD A RUNNING SHOE FIT?Running shoes should typically be about one full size larger than your everyday shoe size. For one reason, running shoes are very true to size, unlike many fashion shoes. Also, you want roughly a thumbnail’s width of room at the end of the shoe between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. This allows the foot room to swell and expand during activity and allows the toes plenty of room to move around. And keep in mind the average foot spreads up to 1/2 an inch in length when weight is applied, and one shoe size is only 1/3 of an inch. The width of running and walking shoes is also important. A shoe that is too narrow can cause a number of problems similar to the length of the shoes. While you may not wear wide or narrow everyday shoes, you may need to consider a different width for your running shoes.

WELL, WON’T THAT GIVE ME BLISTERS?As long as the shoe fits snugly in the heel and through the arch area, your foot should be secure in the shoe and shouldn’t move around. In fact, not having enough room in the shoes is much more likely to cause blisters than having extra room. As we like to say around the store, the heel and middle of the shoe should be snug, but you should be able to pack your lunch in the toe box. Most brands come in a variety of widths and in sizes 1-18. Don’t assume that just because you’re one size in one brand, you’ll automatically be the same size in another brand. Try each shoe on for size, jog around the store a bit and get a good feel for the fit. And be sure to try on shoes later in the day or after a workout since your feet swell during the day and during activity.

PAUL EBER, M.D.Dr. Paul Eber, 51, is an Urologist with the Conrad Pearson Clinic. He will be running 13.1 miles in the Zero Prostate Cancer Half-Marathon on April 27. H+F caught up with him to ask what keeps this physician fit.

WHAT IS YOUR LONGEST RUN? The Nashville Half Marathon (13.1 miles) in 2010.

HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN RUNNING? Twenty years off and on. I’m 6’3” and 235 pounds, so I’ve had some injuries related to running, including a stress fracture in my right ankle, Achilles tendonitis, and a torn meniscus in my left knee.

WHAT IS YOUR TRAINING SCHEDULE FOR THE HALF-MARATHON? Because of my previous injuries I try to run twice during the week, usually about five miles plus a long run on Sundays after church. Right now I’m running about 20 miles per week.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR PRACTICE, WORKING OUT, AND FAMILY? I get my

runs in whenever I can. My office has direct access to the Wolf River Greenway and I’ll bring my running stuff to work with me and run after work. My wife exercises five days a week, so she is very supportive.

BESIDES RUNNING, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO? I enjoy fly-fishing, hunting, and spending time with my family. I have four children, two in college and one each in elementary school and high school.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPORT TEAMS(S)? I’m a graduate of Indiana University, both undergrad and medical school, so I’m a big Hoosier fan. My pro team is the Indianapolis Colts.

IF YOU WERE NOT A DOCTOR WHAT WOULD YOU BE? I would be a teacher. I feel very strongly about educating my patients on their conditions so they can make informed decisions on their health care.

TIP FOR HEALTH + FITNESS READERS: Stay well hydrated to avoid those kidney stones.

A Total Knock-Out: Memphis BBQ Queen Gina Neely

C O V E R P R O F I L E

by Laura Gray TeekellBefore After

GINA, YOU ARE LOOKING GOOD! HOW DOES IT FEEL TO LOSE 20 POUNDS? People hardly recognize me now! My energy is up, I’m feeling good – it has done wonders for my confidence. It really does something to your spirit; you feel so young and you want to try new things. Now I am more in-tune to trying new stuff, like a dance class. My blood pressure is down, and don’t need to take medication anymore. The best part is that I am still being myself, still running around, still having fun.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE THE “KNOCK-OUT” SPOKESPERSON FOR THE GEORGE FOREMAN GRILLS WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE? I am honored just to be recognized as the spokesperson. I am excited about helping people, especially young girls. I’m a girl’s girl. I am so proud that I was recently honored by Girls, Inc. Girl power, all the time! It’s really time to wrap our arms around our daughters and girlfriends, telling them that ‘you can do this.’ There are teams of people making the girls in magazines look good, but this is something you can do yourself. I’ve got my daughters and my girlfriends doing it [the weight loss challenge]. I tell them I don’t do things unless they work.

THE CHALLENGE COMES WITH A FREE DOWNLOADABLE WEIGHT LOSS KIT THAT CONTAINS A COMPLETE FOUR WEEK MEAL PLAN. CAN YOU BREAK IT DOWN FOR US WITH SOME TIPS ON HOW YOU APPROACHED THE CHALLENGE? It’s really a matter of being prepared so you don’t make bad choices when you are on the go, and the tips and plans in the kit are really helpful for that. On a trip to Nashville with one of my girlfriends, I packed healthy snacks from a list provided in the kit ahead of time, and made sure I carried water around with me. You can skip through the meals and pick

what suits you by swapping out one day or meal for another, etc. For most of my cooking, I use the George Foreman Grill now instead – it’s so easy and quick, and the fat just melts off.

DID Y’ALL OWN A GEORGE FOREMAN GRILL BEFORE THE CHALLENGE? We got a George Foreman Grill for our daughters when they went off to college. It really helps in the struggle to eat healthy when you start out on your own. We have always owned a George Foreman Grill, just not the outdoor one. With the outdoor one, I can grill without having Pat around to do it. Girls can grill!

YOU HAVE CONTRIBUTED SOME RECIPES TO THE KIT. DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITES The Garden Fresh Grill Panini. The George Foreman Grills now have Panini plates; you can replace the plates and switch them out. I’ll make the lettuce wrap one night – you can prepare everything on the grill and then just wrap it up in the lettuce. I’ve made the turkey sliders for my girlfriends and served them on these little square plates. It looks cute and the portions are small. If it looks appealing and fun, it doesn’t have to be over- the-top, and you don’t have to tell them it’s healthy. Now I am serving my signature cocktails in tall shot glasses – making it cute and girly while keeping the portion size down. It’s all about the presentation with the girls: if it looks great, we are going to love it.

IT’S NO SECRET THAT MEMPHIS CONTINUALLY RANKS AS ONE OF THE MOST OBESE AND UNHEALTHY CITIES IN THE NATION. DO YOU THINK MEMPHIANS WILL IDENTIFY WITH YOU AND BE INSPIRED TO ENTER THE WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE? I am focusing on talking about the challenge from a fun perspective and building awareness about having a healthy lifestyle. It’s

not just Memphis – across the South we are dealing with issues of health. But there is a stereotype that we are all obese because of the food we eat, which does offend me. Our food is a great thing for the soul and for sharing with people. But we still focus on preparation, and it can be prepared differently and eaten in moderation. I still eat my collard greens; I am just using smoked turkey wings instead of a ham hock. Now it’s about thinking outside the box.

IS THIS SOMETHING WE’LL SEE ON THE MENU AT THE NEW NEELY’S BARBECUE PARLOR IN NEW YORK CITY? Sure! There are a lot more salads, cedar plank salmon; there are healthier BBQ options, like the chicken – it’s more about the spices for flavor. Mac n’ cheese is on there, just a smaller portion.

DID YOUR EVERYDAY HABITS CHANGE, AND HAVE THEY BEEN REPLACED WITH NEWER, HEALTHIER HABITS IN TERMS OF DIET AND EXERCISE? It’s more about creating a lifestyle rather than a diet. Because of the way I feel now, I am keeping it up for my overall health. I’m evolving and growing to be a better eater. The salad plate is now my regular plate, and I have found that I am still full with that smaller portion. I still have one cheat day, Sunday, so I will have my favorite indulgence, champagne, then! Plus the exercises are easy; you can do them at home and they don’t require any equipment. It’s so great because you don’t have to make a huge investment to be able to do any of it! I love to dance, so I will do anything with dancing. I have been going to a Burlesque class, “Shimmy Your Way to Sexiness,” and I want to do the Susan G. Komen 5K. I also am thinking of taking swimming lessons … but there’s something about that swimsuit that I am still not sure of.

We think she’ll be in that swimsuit in no time!

Gina Neely is embarking on a new phase in her life. She and her husband Pat, best known for their hit show which airs on the Food Network, Down Home with the Neelys, and bestselling cookbooks, The Neelys’ Celebration Cookbook: Down-Home Meals for Every Occasion and Down Home with the Neelys: A Southern Family Cookbook, have closed their Memphis restaurants and are facing an empty nest as their daughters head off to college. But don’t think they are slowing down: Gina recently brought Southern cuisine to New York City with the opening of Neely’s Barbecue Parlor, and lost 20 pounds after taking the George Foreman Grills Weight Loss Challenge. H+F’s Laura Gray Teekell checks in with Gina about her role as the Challenge’s spokesperson offering original low-calorie recipes, tips, tricks, and support.

GREEN WAYS TO BEAUTIFY YOUR HOMEWhen it comes to improving your home, it’s easier than ever to make eco-friendly choices that save you money, are better for the environment and make your home more beautiful. Here are a few easy ways you can go green all over the house.

LIGHT IT UP As you make the switch from incandescent bulbs, it’s important to look for a bulb that will not only conserve energy and save money, but that gives you the kind of illumination you want. Look for an alternative with even light distribution, such as 3M LED Advanced Light. It lights up a room as beautifully as you would expect, and lasts for 25 years, delivering energy efficiency without compromise. It uses one quarter of the energy used by an incandescent light bulb and can save you up to $140 worth of electricity over the bulb’s lifetime. In addition, it contains no mercury and does not need special disposal. Learn more at www.3MLighting.com/LED.

DECORATE WITH RECYCLED MATERIALS Whether you’re a do-it-yourselfer or want to buy ready-made items, there are plenty of options that keep materials out of landfills. Look for furniture made from reclaimed wood, carpets made from recycled plastic, flooring made from sustainable resources such as bamboo or cork, and wallpaper made from managed timber sources. You can find glassware, dinner sets and accessories made from recycled glass, and textiles like curtains and blankets made from organic fibers.

SAVE WATER WITH STYLE Upgrading your water- using devices can help you use less water and save money. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that products with the WaterSense or EnergyStar labels will cut down on your water usage. For example, replacing faucets and aerators with WaterSense models can save you an average of 700 gallons of water per year. Replacing your showerhead could save 2,900 gallons of water per year, and a new toilet could save you 13,000 gallons of water per year. Look for the EnergyStar label on dishwashers and washing machines – they can use up to half as much water and 40 percent less energy.

CLEAN GREEN Keep your home sparkling clean with eco- friendly cleaners and detergents. Look for products with plant- based ingredients and that are free from artificial chemicals, colors and fragrances. And learn to make your own cleaners, too. Baking soda and vinegar are natural products with a lot of cleaning power.

Making some green improvements around your house is easier than you think – and the payoff is a beautiful home and a better environment.

3W E E K E N D WA R R I O R S

Anna TuttleAGE: 32

OCCUPATION: Lab Technician at the University of Memphis; Student Assistant in the Clinical Nutrition Department at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; studying to be a Registered Dietitian.

SPORT: Running

FAMILY: Married to David Tuttle; two cats, P-Nut and Superfly Jimmy Snuka, and one dog, Charles Darwin, who placed 1st in the Fast and Furriest 5K in 2011 and 2012 while running with David. His 5K personal record (PR) is 19:20 – we like to brag that he is the fastest dog in Memphis!

TEAM: Breakaway Running Race Team.

WW EVENTS: I ran a PR of 3:40:03 at the Philadelphia Marathon this past November and it was a wonderful experience. Everything was in place for a great run – the weather was perfect, the course was flat, and I had put a lot of hard work into months of training. I have paced three of my last five marathons: the St. Jude Memphis Marathon in 2012, the Chevron Houston Marathon in 2013, and the Little Rock Marathon in 2013. I ran a PR of 22:25 at the Lisa Lassandrello 5K in January of this year and placed 2nd in my age group.

FAVORITE FITNESS ACCOMPLISHMENTS: I have run 22 marathons, including a 50K. I also ran 32 miles on my 32nd birthday in October of 2012, and I am hoping to run 33 miles for my 33rd birthday and keep the tradition going. Finally, David won Male Overall and I won Female Overall for the Sole to Soul 5K in 2011. It was nice to share that experience together.

MOTIVATION: I was overweight for most of my life and even got up to 200 pounds at one point. I changed my eating habits and became more active after I graduated from college in 2003. Running has helped me stay in shape and become even more fit.

FAVORITE THING TO DO AFTER A MARATHON: David and I are very food-motivated and love to reward ourselves after a marathon. We had a NY Pizza after the New York Marathon, a Deep- Dish Pizza after the Chicago Marathon, and a Philly Cheesesteak after the Philadelphia Marathon. After the Flying Pig Marathon in 2009, David (literally) ran to a convenience store after he finished the race so I could have some chocolate milk when I finished. He got major brownie points for that!

BEST LOCAL EATS: I love a Make-Your-Own Salad at Cheffie’s, Guacamole and Margaritas from Las Delicias, the Chimichanga from Molly’s La Casita, and a Pulled Pork Sandwich on Texas Toast from The BBQ Shop. I definitely run to eat!

WW GEAR: Brooks Ghost

BUCKET LIST: I would love to qualify and run the Boston Marathon, and eventually run a 100-miler.

THE FAMOUS PERSON YOU WOULD MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH: I would love to have dinner with Jack White. I’m pretty sure David wouldn’t like that since he thinks Jack is a threat to our marriage!

ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND: I am reading The Nanny Diaries.

INDULGENCE: Chocolate, Bailey’s Irish Cream, and a good red wine. I love to bake but try to give most of the baked goods away so I won’t eat them all.

David TuttleAGE: 35

OCCUPATION: Orthopaedic Engineer at Wright Medical Technology.

SPORT: Running

FAMILY: Wife, Anna Tuttle, two cats and one dog (see Anna’s answer.)

TEAM: Breakaway Running Race Team.

VOLUNTEER: Helping Hands Volunteer at St. Jude.

WW EVENTS: The Philadelphia Marathon (November 2012,) the St. Jude Memphis Marathon (December 2012,) the Houston Marathon (January 2013,) the Mississippi River Marathon in Greenville, MS (February 2013,) and the Little Rock Marathon (March 2013.) I was a pace leader at St. Jude, Houston, and Little Rock. Philadelphia was my PR race and Mississippi River was my third fastest marathon.

FAVORITE FITNESS ACCOMPLISHMENTS: I have run 25 marathons (six as pacer,) and all marathons I’ve completed in under four hours. Also my marathon PR of 3:02:47 at the Philadelphia Marathon; being the Overall Male Winner at the Lisa Lassandrello 5K with a PR of 18:34; being the Overall Male Winner at the Sole to Soul 5K; and placing 2nd Overall in the Book It 5K. I was also the Advanced Coach for Women Run Memphis in 2012 and the Pace Team Coordinator for the St. Jude Memphis Marathon from 2012 to the present.

MOTIVATION: Running has changed my life. I enjoy the camaraderie of the group runs; I have met many good friends while running. I also enjoy the time to myself on the solo long runs. I run when I’m happy, sad, stressed, excited, or mad. Running helps me keep things in perspective. I run to eat – I love that feeling after a 20-mile run knowing that I can eat pretty much whatever I want. Food is definitely a motivation while on the road!

OBSTACLE COURSE: I never was a runner growing up. I started running to lose weight. At the time, I was 240 pounds (I’m currently down 75 pounds). I never thought I’d run longer distances. I have been fortunate to only have one injury, a broken pinky toe, from which I was required to take time off from running. I cross-trained and swam for the six weeks I was sidelined.

PRE-RACE FUEL: I eat the same breakfast as most other mornings: an English muffin with peanut butter & honey, a banana, and a latte or glass of milk.

BEST LOCAL EATS: I am a BBQ joint fan and I love the Dry Ribs from The BBQ Shop! I’m also a big fan of Bosco’s Pollo Diablo Pizza and the Combination Platter from Molly’s La Casita.

WW GEAR: Brooks Ravenna – I just started my 9th pair of Ravenna 3’s. The Ravenna 4’s just came out, so here’s hoping they didn’t change much.

3N U T R I T I O N

Each year, millions of Americans have allergic reactions to the foods they eat, caused by their immune systems’ response to a substance perceived as harmful and leading to the creation of chemicals that can affect breathing and digestion, as well as the skin, heart, and blood pressure. Most food allergies develop early in life, and although some may be outgrown, some may not. They are slightly more common in young children and in people with a family history of allergic reactions.

Food intolerance is not the same as food allergies, and occurs when the body is unable to digest a certain food component, such as lactose, a sugar found in milk. Though the symptoms of intolerance, such as abdominal cramping and diarrhea, may be unpleasant, they are usually not life-threatening.

THE EIGHT MOST COMMON TYPES OF FOOD ALLERGIESThese eight categories of foods account for 90% of all food-related allergic reactions:

MILK: Milk and milk products, such as cheese and yogurt, are a leading cause of allergies.

EGGS: Eggs, or products made with eggs, can trigger allergic reactions.

PEANUTS: Peanut allergies are very common. People who are allergic to peanuts may suffer severe reactions if they eat peanuts or foods containing peanuts.

TREE NUTS: Some people are allergic to tree nuts, which include almonds, pecans, walnuts, cashews, filberts, macadamias, and pistachios.

FISH: This could be any variety of fish, including but not limited to pollock, salmon, cod, tuna, snapper, eel, and tilapia.

SHELLFISH: A few common examples of shellfish that trigger allergic reactions are shrimp, lobster, and crab.

SOY: Soy, or foods made from soy, such as tofu, miso, tamari, and soy sauce can also cause allergic reactions.

WHEAT: Foods made from wheat, such as breads, cereals, and pastas can sometimes cause allergic reactions.

THE MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS OF FOOD ALLERGIESAnaphylaxis is defined as the onset of severe or life-threatening symptoms that may include any of the following:

•Itchyskinoreyes

•Hivesandwelts

•Runnyorstuffynose

•Itchingorswellingofthethroat

•Difficultyswallowing

•Swellingoftheface,eyelids,lips,hands, or feet

•Wheezingandhoarseness

•Difficultybreathing

•Coughing

•Abdominalcramps,nausea,vomiting, and diarrhea

•Adropinbloodpressure

•Increasedheartrate

•Lossofconsciousness

TAKING CARE AND EATING RIGHT WITH A FOOD ALLERGY OR INTOLERANCEPeople with food allergies or intolerances need to avoid the foods that make them sick, although navigating menu items and dishes which include a combination of ingredients can be difficult. In addition, allergy-triggering foods may be prepared on the same counters or with the same utensils as non-allergy causing ingredients, both in restaurants and at home. Through cross-contact, then, a food allergen can creep into what would otherwise be a safe food. If you have an allergy or intolerance, be sure to inform whoever is preparing your food and ask them to be especially careful. Always ask questions to be on the safe side.

IF YOU SUSPECT THAT YOU HAVE A FOOD ALLERGY OR INTOLERANCEContact a physician who specializes in food allergies to help you identify your triggers. Then, consult a registered dietician (RD) in order to help you understand which foods are safe to eat and how best to avoid items that may cause a reaction, in addition to making sure that your diet continues to meet your nutritional needs.

LEARN ABOUT THE INGREDIENTS IN FOODSEggs, wheat, milk, and other allergy-causing foods are often called by other names. To help you avoid allergens, the Food and Drug Administration has mandated that food companies specify on their labels if any of the eight major allergens listed above are contained in the product. If you have an allergy to one of the eight, always read the labels – your RD can be a valuable resource on how to do so accurately. In addition, manufacturers may change ingredients often and without notice, so double-check the label every time you buy a food, even a familiar one. Cosmetics and beauty products may also contain common allergens, so be sure to read the labels on those products as well.

TALK WITH YOUR DAY CARE, SCHOOL, AND WORKPLACEIf your child has a food allergy, make sure the teachers and nurse at your child’s school or daycare center are aware of it and that they know how to respond should he or she experience an allergic reaction. Similarly, inform your co-workers of any allergies you have. Some people are familiar with food allergies and know what to do if a person has a reaction; others may not and will need your help in keeping your risk for exposure low.

FOURTY DAYS TO BETTER LIVING

BBQ “PULLED” TEMPEH & CARROT SANDWICH q 1 8 oz package tempeh

q 1 Tbsp canola oil

q 3 Tbsp minced red onion

q 2 cloves garlic, minced

q 2 carrots, grated

q 1/2 cup barbecue sauce

q Extra barbecue sauce for dressin’

q Creamy Poppy Seed Coleslaw (recipe below)

q 2 whole wheat buns, toasted

Slice the tempeh into about 10 medium-sized strips. Place the tempeh into a steamer basket with a little water in the bottom. Steam for 10 minutes. If you don’t have a steamer basket, place the tempeh directly into a little water in a saucepan and heat for about 10 minutes. Set aside.

Heat the oil in a large skillet on medium-high heat. When the oil is hot, add the onion and cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until soft. Add the garlic and cook for 1 more minute. Add the shredded carrot and sauté for about 5 more minutes or until carrot is soft.

Crumble the steamed tempeh into the skillet and brown for about 5 minutes. Stir in 1/2 cup of the barbecue sauce and continue to cook for about 1 minute. Remove from heat. To assemble, divide the tempeh over the bottoms of two toasted buns. Top with extra sauce and coleslaw and the tops of the bun halves.

Yields 2 sandwiches.

Robin Beaudoin is a lifelong Memphian, weight loss motivator, and healthy eating enthusiast.

F I T P L AT E

In an effort to sway as green as possible with this recipe, in keeping with the eco-friendly issue of Memphis Health + Fitness and Earth Day on April 22, I present to you the simplest and tastiest way to use the “queen of greens,” kale, while enjoying the benefits of eating it raw. Kale is, as other cruciferous veggies such as cabbage and broccoli, largely composed of insoluble fiber (the good kind that helps move things along.) Chewing those cellulose fibers in order to burst through to the liquid gold of vitamin K and iron can feel downright Promethean if the vegetable isn’t treated with love, however.

From a health standpoint, these cruciferous leafy greens simply cannot be topped. You’ve likely seen the labels in the produce section at our Memphis Whole Foods, listing each fruit and veggie’s ANDI score, based on Dr. Fuhrman’s Nutrient Density Scoring System. This writer has yet to find anything with a higher score than kale. In fact, it earns a perfect 1000 points. Not to be ignored, cabbage, like oranges, is abundant in vitamin C, one of the most powerful antioxidants, cleansing everything from the blood to the skin. Maybe you’re a juicer, maybe you’re a protein-eater, but anyone can draw more vitamins from certain foods in their raw form.

Eat your vegetables, Memphis! Because of those tough cell walls, the cabbage and kale combination holds up to a lightly sweet citrus-tahini vinaigrette for a day or two after incorporated, lightly macerating and softening the kale and cabbage over time. Any cruciferous bitterness is masked and meets its match in a sweet (ever-so-slightly Asian) orange vinaigrette dressing. Curly kale l eans toward the tender side to begin with, and adds volume and a soft yet chewy texture, contrasting with the cabbage slaw’s crunch. Pepitas contribute the crunch factor and yet another shade of green.

Mostly Raw Kale Slaw Green Kale Saladq 1 bag cabbage-based Cole

slaw mixq 2 small bunches of curly

edged kale, washed, dried, and removed from ribs

q 1 green apple, julienned (skin on)

q 1/4 cup pepitas (pumpkin) seeds

q 1/2 cup dried currants (raisins may be substituted)

Vinaigrette:q Juice of 3 mandarin oranges (such as Cuties)q 1 tsp. lemon juiceq 1/4 cup white rice vinegarq 1/4 cup light oil such as rice bran oil, or extra light olive oilq 2 tsp. tahini (sesame paste)q 1/2 tsp. stevia-based granulated baking blend (or 2 tsp. real maple syrup)q Kosher salt and fresh-cracked pepper to taste

Toss the Greens:

Tear the washed and dried curly kale into small bite-sized pieces. In a large bowl, combine the kale, cabbages, apple, pepitas, and dried currants. Place the oil, orange juice, lemon juice, tahini, stevia, pepper, and a pinch of salt in a sealed jar, and shake vigorously for 1-2 minutes until blended. Pour the dressing over the salad judiciously (you should have leftover dressing) and toss gently to coat. Serve immediately.

Serves 6-8. Delicious with a side of savory whipped potatoes and your favorite grilled fish.

I have not been looking forward to writing this month’s article for several reasons. First, I have completely faltered on keeping up with calories via MyFitnessPal. Second, I have not been running regularly. And third, I have only lost two pounds since last month. How did this happen? I was making such good progress!

I have been a stay-at-home mom for almost five years, but this past month I went back to my old job. This is not an excuse, but it is a new thing to which I must adjust. In the past, I was running every morning after I dropped my kids off at school; now my husband takes the kids to school while I go to work.

Starting the day with a run helps everything else fall into place. I want to keep track of my calories, because I have so many calories to consume after a run. I make good food decisions because I am in the right frame of mind. I have more energy and feel great all day when I start with a run. So, why not just run early in the morning? Because it’s dark outside. Because I have to get ready for work. Because I have to get my kids ready for school. THOSE are excuses.

Yesterday morning at zero-dark-thirty, I had a great run with my friend Wally. I believe having a partner is going to be the key for me, especially now that it is still dark outside when I would be running. Either that or I am going to have to buck up and go to the YMCA on my lunch break.

I am well-behaved at work, at least where food is concerned. I take a big bag of food with me every day that includes a container of yogurt for breakfast, a banana for a morning snack, an apple for an afternoon snack, and a big veggie salad for lunch. Today, in the spirit of thinking Like a Boss, I am going to skip the yogurt and pack a gym bag for my lunch break, but for breakfast, I’m bringing my friend Aja’s favorite juice, also known as The Blood of My Enemies:

• Onebeet

• Oneapple

• Aone-inchknobofginger

• Asqueezeoflime

Put the beet, apple, and ginger into a juicer. Pour the juice over ice and add a squeeze of lime juice. Enjoy, and no excuses!

GrowMemphis, which partners with local communities in order to promote a sustainable local food system, has a vision to enhance the health of the Mid-South. The organization was founded through the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center in 2007, after garden projects in Hollywood-Springdale and South Memphis were deemed successful replications of the original Orange Mound Community Garden, itself started by a board member of the Center in 2001 as a way to bring the neighborhood’s youth and seniors together. Through the development of its community gardens and the formalization of the Food Advisory Council for Memphis and Shelby County, GrowMemphis now operates as an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization, offering help in finding and securing vacant lots, training volunteers, and advising those interested in starting their own neighborhood gardens.

In just a few short years, GrowMemphis has seen a tremendous increase in the interest to develop community gardens in Memphis, and currently partners with nearly 30 neighborhoods, schools, and churches. Each winter, GrowMemphis accepts applications for grants that cover the start-up cost of new gardens based on three criteria: need, leadership, and sustainability of the neighborhood. Unfortunately, only two to three gardens can be funded each year.

GrowMemphis recently hosted the third annual Mid-South Farm to Table Conference in February at Rhodes College, which yielded presentations and conversation between local farmers, students, businesses, and consumers, led by Keynote Speaker John T. Edge of Southern Foodways Alliance, on how we can look toward the future and rebuild the Mid-South’s broken food system.

There are several upcoming events aimed at helping GrowMemphis raise funds, including its annual Spring Plant Sale, which will take place on April 14th from 1-4 p.m. at Idlewild Presbyterian Church, and the 3rd annual Bristerfest, a grassroots celebration of Memphis music and culture happening on April 27-28 at the Levitt Shell, with a portion of the proceeds going to fund urban gardening programs and education in the community. Tickets can be purchased at www.bristerfest.com.

Those interested in supporting the mission of GrowMemphis and making an impact on food policy in Memphis are asked to contact GrowMemphis’ Executive Director Chris Peterson at [email protected], who is always in need of donations, garden volunteers, and supplies.

PASS THE PROTEIN, PLEASE. CYes indeed, avocados provide all of the 18 essential amino acids that your body needs to form a complete protein. And while a whole avocado is not going to provide as much protein as a few ounces of meat, it is easier for your system to digest, and will fill your stomach with some much-needed fiber to keep you feeling full and satisfied.

GET THE FAT FACTS RIGHT. For a long time, avocados were banned from dieters’ plates for being too high in fat and calories. But the fat found in avocados – “good for you” monounsaturated fat – is vital to your system, boasting all kinds of health benefits, from lowering cholesterol to reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes. They can even offer protection against certain cancers, such as colon and breast cancer. But it doesn’t stop there; the great avocado combines omega-3 fatty acids, essential vitamins K, C, and E, plus selenium, zinc, and phytosterols. This powerhouse combo can also help guard the body against the inflammation and joint pain associated with arthritis.

CARE FOR SOME CAROTENOIDS WITH THAT SALAD? You have heard a million times that your daily diet MUST include a wide array of fruits and vegetables. There are many reasons for that – produce is big on taste, low in calories, and super nutrient-dense. But in order to get a double health boost and take advantage of the healthy carotenoids contained in fruits and vegetables -- especially important phytochemicals such as beta carotene, lycopene, and lutein – share your plate of salad with a little bit of fat. Research shows that unless fruit and vegetables are served with some sort of fat, you’ll absorb only a fraction of the nutrients available. Sure, butter and olive oil are fine options, but give your body a double healthy whammy by enjoying a few ounces of avocado. Just by combining this green goddess correctly, you help your body absorb and utilize the antioxidants found within the avocado itself, and increase the absorption of carotenoids in the produce by 200-400%!

Try the amazing avocado blended with plain Greek yogurt, garlic, sea salt, and thinned with lime juice for a salad dressing or sauce for grilled chicken, or dice a firm avocado and mix it with small sections of grapefruit for a fresh and different swing on a spring salad. And be sure to try the following sweet recipe for a unique way to enjoy avocados. It’s a special treat when you want dessert to taste good and be good for you.

Creamy Choco-Cado Milkshake— 1 small avocado, pitted and peeled

— 1/2 cup frozen cherries (or 1/2 frozen banana)

— 1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk (or cow’s milk)

— 1/2 cup water (may need more to make it the right consistency)

— 1 Tbsp raw cacao

— 1 Tbsp honey (perhaps more if you need it sweeter)

— 3-5 ice cubes

Blend all ingredients in a blender, and serve thick like a pudding, or add extra milk and water to thin it out for the straw slurpers at the table. Enjoy!

F I T P L AT E

The Amazing Avocado Sometimes called the “dragon’s pear,” the avocado is a delicious and wholesome fruit that can add an abundance of nutrients to any diet. Super mild, creamy, and rich, avocados can be enjoyed alone or used to add texture and flavor to a salad, to thicken a creamy sauce, and even be used as the base of a milkshake. (Yes, a milkshake!) While it is true that avocados are high in calories and fat, it doesn’t mean that avocados are bad for you. Not at all …
